Universal Properties of the Higgs Resonance in (2+1)-Dimensional U(1) Critical Systems

We present spectral functions for the magnitude squared of the order parameter in the scaling limit of the two-dimensional superfluid to Mott insulator quantum phase transition at constant density, which has emergent particle-hole symmetry and Lorentz invariance. The universal functions for the superfluid, Mott insulator, and normal liquid phases reveal a low-frequency resonance which is relatively sharp and is followed by a damped oscillation (in the first two phases only) before saturating to the quantum critical plateau. The counterintuitive resonance feature in the insulating and normal phases calls for deeper understanding of collective modes in the strongly coupled (2+1)-dimensional relativistic field theory. Our results are derived from analytically continued correlation functions obtained from path-integral Monte Carlo simulations of the Bose-Hubbard model.

Two-dimensional Potts antiferromagnets with a phase transition at arbitrarily large q

We exhibit infinite families of two-dimensional lattices (some of which are triangulations or quadrangulations of the plane) on which the q-state Potts antiferromagnet has a finite-temperature phase transition at arbitrarily large values of q. This unexpected result is proven rigorously by using a Peierls argument to measure the entropic advantage of sublattice long-range order. Additional numerical data are obtained using transfer matrices, Monte Carlo simulation, and a high-precision graph-theoretic method.

Stability of Excited Dressed States with Spin-Orbit Coupling

We study the decay behaviors of ultracold atoms in metastable states with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and demonstrate that there are two SOC-induced decay mechanisms. One arises from the trapping potential and the other is due to interatomic collision. We present general schemes for calculating decay rates from these two mechanisms, and illustrate how the decay rates can be controlled by experimental parameters. We experimentally measure the decay rates over a broad parameter region, and the results agree well with theoretical calculations. This work provides an insight for both quantum simulation involving metastable dressed states and studies on few-body problems with SO coupling.

Percolation in the canonical ensemble

We study the bond percolation problem under the constraint that the total number of occupied bonds is fixed, so that the canonical ensemble applies. We show via an analytical approach that at criticality, the constraint can induce new finite-size corrections with exponent y_{can}=2y_t-d both in energy-like and magnetic quantities, where y_t=1/ν is the thermal renormalization exponent and d is the spatial dimension. Furthermore, we find that while most of universal parameters remain unchanged, some universal amplitudes, like the excess cluster number, can be modified and become non-universal. We confirm these predictions by extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional percolation problem which has y_{can}=-1/2.

The Hintermann-Merlini-Baxter-Wu and the Infinite-Coupling-Limit Ashkin-Teller Models

We show how the Hintermann-Merlini-Baxter-Wu model (which is a generalization of the well-known Baxter-Wu model to a general Eulerian triangulation) can be mapped onto a particular infinite-coupling-limit of the Ashkin-Teller model. We work out some mappings among these models, also including the standard and mixed Ashkin-Teller models. Finally, we compute the phase diagram of the infinite-coupling-limit Ashkin-Teller model on the square, triangular, hexagonal, and kagome lattices.

Shortest-Path Fractal Dimension for Percolation in Two and Three Dimensions

We carry out a high-precision Monte Carlo study of the shortest-path fractal dimension $\dm$ for percolation in two and three dimensions, using the Leath-Alexandrowicz method which grows a cluster from an active seed site. A variety of quantities are sampled as a function of the chemical distance, including the number of activated sites, a measure of the radius, and the survival probability. By finite-size scaling, we determine $\dm = 1.130 77(2)$ and $1.375 6(6)$ in two and three dimensions, respectively. The result in 2D rules out the recently conjectured value $\dm=217/192$ [Phys. Rev. E 81, 020102(R) (2010)].

Modified Bethe-Peierls boundary condition for ultracold atoms with Spin-Orbit coupling

We show that the Bethe-Peierls (BP) boundary condition should be modified for ultracold atoms with spin-orbit (SO) coupling. Moreover, we derive a general form of the modified BP boundary condition, which is applicable to a system with arbitrary kind of SO coupling. In the modified BP condition, an anisotropic term appears and the inter-atomic scattering length is normally SO-coupling dependent. For the special system in the current experiments, however, it can be proved that the scattering length is SO-coupling independent, and takes the same value as in the case without SO coupling. Our result is helpful for the study of both few-body and many-body physics in SO-coupled ultracold gases.

Novel phase transitions in XY Antiferromagnets on Plane Triangulations

Using Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling, we investigate the XY antiferromagnet on the triangular, Union Jack and bisected-hexagonal lattices, and in each case find both Ising and Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions. As is well-known, on the triangular lattice, as the temperature decreases the system develops chiral order for temperatures $T < \Tc$, and then quasi-long-range magnetic order on its sublattices when $T < \Ts$, with $\Ts < \Tc$. The behavior $\Ts<\Tc$ is predicted by theoretical arguments due to Korshunov, based on the unbinding of kink-antikink pairs. On the Union Jack and bisected-hexagonal lattices, by contrast, we find that as $T$ decreases the magnetizations on some of the sublattices become quasi-long-range ordered at a temperature $\Ts > \Tc$, before chiral order develops. In some cases, the sublattice spins then undergo a second transition, of Ising type, separating two quasi-long-range ordered phases. On the Union Jack lattice, the magnetization on the degree-4 sublattice remains disordered until $\Tc$ and then undergoes an Ising transition to a quasi-long-range ordered phase.

Collective Dipole Oscillation of a Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensate

We present an experimental study of the collective dipole oscillation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap. Dynamics of the center-of-mass dipole oscillation is studied in a broad parameter region, as a function of spin-orbit coupling parameters as well as oscillation amplitude. Anharmonic properties beyond effective-mass approximation are revealed, such as amplitude-dependent frequency and finite oscillation frequency at place with divergent effective mass. These anharmonic behaviors agree quantitatively with variational wave-function calculations. Moreover, we experimentally demonstrate a unique feature of spin-orbit coupled system predicted by a sum-rule approach, stating that spin polarization susceptibility--a static physical quantity--can be measured via dynamics of dipole oscillation. The divergence of polarization susceptibility is observed at the quantum phase transition that separates magnetic nonzero-momentum condensate from nonmagnetic zero-momentum phase. The good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results provides a bench mark for recently developed theoretical approaches.

Computational Study of a Multistep Height Model

An equilibrium random surface multistep height model proposed in [Abraham and Newman, EPL, 86, 16002 (2009)] is studied using a variant of the worm algorithm. In one limit, the model reduces to the two-dimensional Ising model in the height representation. When the Ising model constraint of single height steps is relaxed, the critical temperature and critical exponents are continuously varying functions of the parameter controlling height steps larger than one. Numerical estimates of the critical exponents can be mapped via a single parameter-- the Coulomb gas coupling-- to the exponents of the O(n) loop model on the honeycomb lattice with n <= 1.

Crossover from Isotropic to Directed Percolation

We generalize the directed percolation (DP) model by relaxing the strict directionality of DP such that propagation can occur in either direction but with anisotropic probabilities. We denote the probabilities as $p_{\downarrow}= p \cdot p_d$ and $p_{\uparrow}=p \cdot (1-p_d)$, with $p $ representing the average occupation probability and $p_d$ controlling the anisotropy. The Leath-Alexandrowicz method is used to grow a cluster from an active seed site. We call this model with two main growth directions {\em biased directed percolation} (BDP). Standard isotropic percolation (IP) and DP are the two limiting cases of the BDP model, corresponding to $p_d=1/2$ and $p_d=0,1$ respectively. In this work, besides IP and DP, we also consider the $1/2<p_d<1$ region. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are carried out on the square and the simple-cubic lattices, and the numerical data are analyzed by finite-size scaling. We locate the percolation thresholds of the BDP model for $p_d=0.6$ and 0.8, and determine various critical exponents. These exponents are found to be consistent with those for standard DP. We also determine the renormalization exponent associated with the asymmetric perturbation due to $p_d -1/2 \neq 0$ near IP, and confirm that such an asymmetric scaling field is relevant at IP.

Phase diagram of the toric code model in a parallel magnetic field

Ground-state phase diagram of the toric code model in a parallel magnetic field has three distinct phases: topological, charge-condensed, and vortex-condensed states. To study it we consider an implicit local order parameter characterizing the transition between the topological and charge-condensed phases, and sample it using continuous-time Monte Carlo simulations. The corresponding second-order transition line is obtained by finite-size scaling analysis of this order parameter. Symmetry breaking between charges and vortices along the first-order transition line is also observed, and our numerical result shows that the end point of the first-order transition line is located at $h_x^{(c)}=h_z^{(c)}=0.418(2)$.

The O(n) loop model on a three-dimensional lattice

We study a class of loop models, parameterized by a continuously varying loop fugacity n, on the hydrogen-peroxide lattice, which is a three-dimensional cubic lattice of coordination number 3. For integer n > 0, these loop models provide graphical representations for n-vector models on the same lattice, while for n = 0 they reduce to the self-avoiding walk problem. We use worm algorithms to perform Monte Carlo studies of the loop model for n = 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 and obtain the critical points and a number of critical exponents, including the thermal exponent yt, magnetic exponent yh, and loop exponent yl. For integer n, the estimated values of yt and yh are found to agree with existing estimates for the three-dimensional O(n) universality class. The efficiency of the worm algorithms is reflected by the small value of the dynamic exponent z, determined from our analysis of the integrated autocorrelation times.

Experimental demonstration of topological error correction

Topological error correction--a novel method to actively correct errors based on cluster states with topological properties--has the highest order of tolerable error rates known to date (10^{-2}). Moreover, the scheme requires only nearest-neighbour interaction, particularly suitable for most physical systems. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of topological error correction with an 8-qubit optical cluster state. In the experiment, it is shown that a correlation can be protected against a single error on any single qubit. In addition, when all qubits are simultaneously subjected to errors with equal probability, the effective error rate is significantly reduced, clearly verifying the advantage of topological error correction. The quantum gate with the error rate below the threshold is within the current experimental technology. We believe topological error correction should be a critical ingredient for the future large-scale quantum computation.

Universal critical properties of the Eulerian bond-cubic model

We investigate the Eulerian bond-cubic model on the square lattice by means of Monte Carlo simulations, using an efficient cluster algorithm and a finite-size scaling analysis. The critical points and four critical exponents of the model are determined for several values of $n$. Two of the exponents are fractal dimensions, which are obtained numerically for the first time. Our results are consistent with the Coulomb gas predictions for the critical O($n$) branch for $n < 2$ and the results obtained by previous transfer matrix calculations. For $n=2$, we find that the thermal exponent, the magnetic exponent and the fractal dimension of the largest critical Eulerian bond component are different from those of the critical O(2) loop model. These results confirm that the cubic anisotropy is marginal at $n=2$ but irrelevant for $n<2$.

Worm-type Monte Carlo simulation of the Ashkin-Teller model on the triangular lattice

We investigate the symmetric Ashkin-Teller (AT) model on the triangular lattice in the antiferromagnetic two-spin coupling region ($J<0$). In the $J \rightarrow -\infty$ limit, we map the AT model onto a fully-packed loop-dimer model on the honeycomb lattice. On the basis of this exact transformation and the low-temperature expansion, we formulate a variant of worm-type algorithms for the AT model, which significantly suppress the critical slowing-down. We analyze the Monte Carlo data by finite-size scaling, and locate a line of critical points of the Ising universality class in the region $J<0$ and $K>0$, with K the four-spin interaction. Further, we find that, in the $J \rightarrow -\infty$ limit, the critical line terminates at the decoupled point $K=0$. From the numerical results and the exact mapping, we conjecture that this `tricritical' point ($J \rightarrow -\infty, K=0$) is Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like and the logarithmic correction is absent. The dynamic critical exponent of the worm algorithm is estimated as $z=0.28(1)$ near $(J \rightarrow -\infty, K=0)$.

Finite-temperature phase transition in a class of 4-state Potts antiferromagnets

We argue that the 4-state Potts antiferromagnet has a finite-temperature phase transition on any Eulerian plane triangulation in which one sublattice consists of vertices of degree 4. We furthermore predict the universality class of this transition. We then present transfer-matrix and Monte Carlo data confirming these predictions for the cases of the union-jack and bisected hexagonal lattices.

Deterministic spin-wave interferometer based on Rydberg blockade

The spin-wave (SW) NOON state is an $N$-particle Fock state with two atomic spin-wave modes maximally entangled. Attributed to the property that the phase is sensitive to collective atomic motion, the SW NOON state can be utilized as a novel atomic interferometer and has promising application in quantum enhanced measurement. In this paper we propose an efficient protocol to deterministically produce the atomic SW NOON state by employing Rydberg blockade. Possible errors in practical manipulations are analyzed. A feasible experimental scheme is suggested. Our scheme is far more efficient than the recent experimentally demonstrated one, which only creates a heralded second-order SW NOON state.
