Quench dynamics of topological quantum phase transition in Wen-plaquette model

We study the quench dynamics of the topological quantum phase transition in the two-dimensional transverse Wen-plaquette model, which has a phase transition from a Z2 topologically ordered to a spin-polarized state. By mapping the Wen-plaquette model onto a one-dimensional quantum Ising model, we calculate the expectation value of the plaquette operator Fi during a slowly quenching process from a topologically ordered state. A logarithmic scaling law of quench dynamics near the quantum phase transition is found, which is analogous to the well-known static critical behavior of the specific heat in the one-dimensional quantum Ising model.

Worm Monte Carlo study of the honeycomb-lattice loop model

We present a Markov-chain Monte Carlo algorithm of "worm"type that correctly simulates the O(n) loop model on any (finite and connected) bipartite cubic graph, for any real n>0, and any edge weight, including the fully-packed limit of infinite edge weight. Furthermore, we prove rigorously that the algorithm is ergodic and has the correct stationary distribution. We emphasize that by using known exact mappings when n=2, this algorithm can be used to simulate a number of zero-temperature Potts antiferromagnets for which the Wang-Swendsen-Kotecky cluster algorithm is non-ergodic, including the 3-state model on the kagome-lattice and the 4-state model on the triangular-lattice. We then use this worm algorithm to perform a systematic study of the honeycomb-lattice loop model as a function of n<2, on the critical line and in the densely-packed and fully-packed phases. By comparing our numerical results with Coulomb gas theory, we identify the exact scaling exponents governing some fundamental geometric and dynamic observables. In particular, we show that for all n<2, the scaling of a certain return time in the worm dynamics is governed by the magnetic dimension of the loop model, thus providing a concrete dynamical interpretation of this exponent. The case n>2 is also considered, and we confirm the existence of a phase transition in the 3-state Potts universality class that was recently observed via numerical transfer matrix calculations.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like percolation transitions in the two-dimensional XY model

We study a percolation problem on a substrate formed by two-dimensional XY spin configurations, using Monte Carlo methods. For a given spin configuration we construct percolation clusters by randomly choosing a direction $x$ in the spin vector space, and then placing a percolation bond between nearest-neighbor sites $i$ and $j$ with probability $p_{ij} = \max (0,1-e^{-2K s^x_i s^x_j})$, where $K > 0$ governs the percolation process. A line of percolation thresholds $K_{\rm c} (J)$ is found in the low-temperature range $J \geq J_{\rm c}$, where $J > 0$ is the XY coupling strength. Analysis of the correlation function $g_p (r)$, defined as the probability that two sites separated by a distance $r$ belong to the same percolation cluster, yields algebraic decay for $K \geq K_{\rm c}(J)$, and the associated critical exponent depends on $J$ and $K$. Along the threshold line $K_{\rm c}(J)$, the scaling dimension for $g_p$ is, within numerical uncertainties, equal to $1/8$. On this basis, we conjecture that the percolation transition along the $K_{\rm c} (J)$ line is of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type.

Interference of overlap-free entangled photons with a Mach-Zehnder-like interferometer

Using spontaneous parametric down conversion and a 50:50 beam splitter, we generate coaxial polarization-entangled photon pairs, of which the two photons are far separated from each other. The photons are then sent one by one through one port of a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We observe interference fringes with a periodicity half of the single-photon wavelength, independent of the distance between the photons. This feature can find applications in quantum-enhanced measurement.

Quantum interface between frequency-uncorrelated down-converted entanglement and atomic-ensemble quantum memory

Photonic entanglement source and quantum memory are two basic building blocks of linear-optical quantum computation and long-distance quantum communication. In the past decades, intensive researches have been carried out, and remarkable progress, particularly based on the spontaneous parametric down-converted (SPDC) entanglement source and atomic ensembles, has been achieved. Currently, an important task towards scalable quantum information processing (QIP) is to efficiently write and read entanglement generated from a SPDC source into and out of an atomic quantum memory. Here we report the first experimental realization of a quantum interface by building a 5 MHz frequency-uncorrelated SPDC source and reversibly mapping the generated entangled photons into and out of a remote optically thick cold atomic memory using electromagnetically induced transparency. The frequency correlation between the entangled photons is almost fully eliminated with a suitable pump pulse. The storage of a triggered single photon with arbitrary polarization is shown to reach an average fidelity of 92% for 200 ns storage time. Moreover, polarization-entangled photon pairs are prepared, and one of photons is stored in the atomic memory while the other keeps flying. The CHSH Bell's inequality is measured and violation is clearly observed for storage time up to 1 microsecond. This demonstrates the entanglement is stored and survives during the storage. Our work establishes a crucial element to implement scalable all-optical QIP, and thus presents a substantial progress in quantum information science.

Light pulse in $Λ$-type cold atomic gases

We investigate the behavior of the light pulse in $Lambda$-type cold atomic gases with two counterpropagating control lights with equal strength by directly simulating the dynamic equations and exploring the dispersion relation. Our analysis shows that, depending on the length $L_0$ of the stored wave packet and the decay rate $γ$ of ground-spin coherence, the recreated light can behave differently. For long $L_0$ and/or large $γ$, a stationary light pulse is produced, while two propagating light pulses appear for short $L_0$ and/or small $γ$. In the $γ\to 0$ limit, the light always splits into two propagating pulses for sufficiently long time. This scenario agrees with a recent experiment [Y.-W.Lin, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 213601(2009)] where two propagating light pulses are generated in laser-cooled cold atomic ensembles.

Some geometric critical exponents for percolation and the random-cluster model

We introduce several infinite families of new critical exponents for the random-cluster model and present scaling arguments relating them to the k-arm exponents. We then present Monte Carlo simulations confirming these predictions. These new exponents provide a convenient way to determine k-arm exponents from Monte Carlo simulations. An understanding of these exponents also leads to a radically improved implementation of the Sweeny Monte Carlo algorithm. In addition, our Monte Carlo data allow us to conjecture an exact expression for the shortest-path fractal dimension d_min in two dimensions: d_min = (g+2)(g+18)/(32g) where g is the Coulomb-gas coupling, related to the cluster fugacity q via q = 2 + 2 cos(gπ/2) with 2 \le g \le 4.

Phase transitions in self-dual generalizations of the Baxter-Wu model

We study two types of generalized Baxter-Wu models, by means of transfer-matrix and Monte Carlo techniques. The first generalization allows for different couplings in the up- and down triangles, and the second generalization is to a $q$-state spin model with three-spin interactions. Both generalizations lead to self-dual models, so that the probable locations of the phase transitions follow. Our numerical analysis confirms that phase transitions occur at the self-dual points. For both generalizations of the Baxter-Wu model, the phase transitions appear to be discontinuous.

Single-cluster dynamics for the random-cluster model

We formulate a single-cluster Monte Carlo algorithm for the simulation of the random-cluster model. This algorithm is a generalization of the Wolff single-cluster method for the $q$-state Potts model to non-integer values $q>1$. Its results for static quantities are in a satisfactory agreement with those of the existing Swendsen-Wang-Chayes-Machta (SWCM) algorithm, which involves a full cluster decomposition of random-cluster configurations. We explore the critical dynamics of this algorithm for several two-dimensional Potts and random-cluster models. For integer $q$, the single-cluster algorithm can be reduced to the Wolff algorithm, for which case we find that the autocorrelation functions decay almost purely exponentially, with dynamic exponents $z_{\rm exp} =0.07 (1), 0.521 (7)$, and $1.007 (9)$ for $q=2, 3$, and 4 respectively. For non-integer $q$, the dynamical behavior of the single-cluster algorithm appears to be very dissimilar to that of the SWCM algorithm. For large critical systems, the autocorrelation function displays a range of power-law behavior as a function of time. The dynamic exponents are relatively large. We provide an explanation for this peculiar dynamic behavior.

Crossing bonds in the random-cluster model

We derive the scaling dimension associated with crossing bonds in the random-cluster representation of the two-dimensional Potts model, by means of a mapping on the Coulomb gas. The scaling field associated with crossing bonds appears to be irrelevant, on the critical as well as on the tricritical branch. The latter result stands in a remarkable contrast with the existing result for the tricritical O(n) model that crossing bonds are relevant. In order to obtain independent confirmation of the Coulomb gas result for the crossing-bond exponent, we perform a finite-size-scaling analysis based on numerical transfer-matrix calculations.

A worm algorithm for the fully-packed loop model

We present a Markov-chain Monte Carlo algorithm of worm type that correctly simulates the fully-packed loop model on the honeycomb lattice, and we prove that it is ergodic and has uniform stationary distribution. The fully-packed loop model on the honeycomb lattice is equivalent to the zero-temperature triangular-lattice antiferromagnetic Ising model, which is fully frustrated and notoriously difficult to simulate. We test this worm algorithm numerically and estimate the dynamic exponent z = 0.515(8). We also measure several static quantities of interest, including loop-length and face-size moments. It appears numerically that the face-size moments are governed by the magnetic dimension for percolation.

Percolation and critical O($n$) loop configurations

We study a percolation problem based on critical loop configurations of the O($n$) loop model on the honeycomb lattice. We define dual clusters as groups of sites on the dual triangular lattice that are not separated by a loop, and investigate the the bond-percolation properties of these dual clusters. The universal properties at the percolation threshold are argued to match those of Kasteleyn-Fortuin random clusters in the critical Potts model. This relation is checked numerically by means of cluster simulations of several O($n$) models in the range $1\leq n \leq 2$. The simulation results include the percolation threshold for several values of $n$, as well as the universal exponents associated with bond dilution and the size distribution of the diluted clusters at the percolation threshold. Our numerical results for the exponents are in agreement with existing Coulomb gas results for the random-cluster model, which confirms the relation between both models. We discuss the renormalization flow of the bond-dilution parameter $p$ as a function of $n$, and provide an expression that accurately describes a line of unstable fixed points as a function of $n$, corresponding with the percolation threshold. Furthermore, the renormalization scenario indicates the existence, in $p$ versus $n$ diagram, another line of fixed points at $p=1$, which is stable with respect to $p$.

Percolation transitions in two dimensions

We investigate bond- and site-percolation models on several two-dimensional lattices numerically, by means of transfer-matrix calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. The lattices include the square, triangular, honeycomb kagome and diced lattices with nearest-neighbor bonds, and the square lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor bonds. Results are presented for the bond-percolation thresholds of the kagome and diced lattices, and the site-percolation thresholds of the square, honeycomb and diced lattices. We also include the bond- and site-percolation thresholds for the square lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor bonds. We find that corrections to scaling behave according to the second temperature dimension $X_{t2}=4$ predicted by the Coulomb gas theory and the theory of conformal invariance. In several cases there is evidence for an additional term with the same exponent, but modified by a logarithmic factor. Only for the site-percolation problem on the triangular lattice such a logarithmic term appears to be small or absent. The amplitude of the power-law correction associated with $X_{t2}=4$ is found to be dependent on the orientation of the lattice with respect to the cylindrical geometry of the finite systems.

A modified Potts model for the interaction of surface-attached polymer complexes

We present a simple yet generic model for the behavior of a system of many surface-attached flexible polymers with rigid side chains. Beyond its potential application in describing the dynamics of the extracellular matrix of mammalian cells, the model itself shows an interesting phase transition behavior since the underlying models (a two-dimensional Potts model and a XY-model) undergo different phase transitions.

A Monte Carlo study of the triangular lattice gas with the first- and the second-neighbor exclusions

We formulate a Swendsen-Wang-like version of the geometric cluster algorithm. As an application,we study the hard-core lattice gas on the triangular lattice with the first- and the second-neighbor exclusions. The data are analyzed by finite-size scaling, but the possible existence of logarithmic corrections is not considered due to the limited data. We determine the critical chemical potential as $μ_c=1.75682 (2)$ and the critical particle density as $ρ_c=0.180(4)$. The thermal and magnetic exponents $y_t=1.51(1) \approx 3/2$ and $y_h=1.8748 (8) \approx 15/8$, estimated from Binder ratio $Q$ and susceptibility $χ$, strongly support the general belief that the model is in the 4-state Potts universality class. On the other hand, the analyses of energy-like quantities yield the thermal exponent $y_t$ ranging from $1.440(5)$ to $1.470(5)$. These values differ significantly from the expected value 3/2, and thus imply the existence of logarithmic corrections.

Quantum Gravity Boundary Terms from Spectral Action of Noncommutative Space

We study the boundary terms of the spectral action of the noncommutative space, defined by the spectral triple dictated by the physical spectrum of the standard model, unifying gravity with all other fundamental interactions. We prove that the spectral action predicts uniquely the gravitational boundary term required for consistency of quantum gravity with the correct sign and coefficient. This is a remarkable result given the lack of freedom in the spectral action to tune this term.

Dynamic critical behavior of the Chayes-Machta-Swendsen-Wang algorithm

We study the dynamic critical behavior of the Chayes-Machta dynamics for the Fortuin-Kasteleyn random-cluster model, which generalizes the Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the q-state Potts model to noninteger q, in two and three spatial dimensions, by Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the Li-Sokal bound z \ge α/νis close to but probably not sharp in d=2, and is far from sharp in d=3, for all q. The conjecture z \ge β/νis false (for some values of q) in both d=2 and d=3.

Cluster simulations of loop models on two-dimensional lattices

We develop cluster algorithms for a broad class of loop models on two-dimensional lattices, including several standard O(n) loop models at n \ge 1. We show that our algorithm has little or no critical slowing-down when 1 \le n \le 2. We use this algorithm to investigate the honeycomb-lattice O(n) loop model, for which we determine several new critical exponents, and a square-lattice O(n) loop model, for which we obtain new information on the phase diagram.
