Small inertia limit for coupled kinetic swarming models

We investigate various versions of multi-dimensional systems involving many species, modeling aggregation phenomena through nonlocal interaction terms. We establish a rigorous connection between kinetic and macroscopic descriptions by considering the small-inertia limit at the kinetic level. The results are proven either under smoothness assumptions on all interaction kernels or under singular assumptions for \emph{self-interaction} potentials. Utilizing different techniques in the two cases, we demonstrate the existence of a solution to the kinetic system, provide uniform estimates with respect to the inertia parameter, and show convergence towards the corresponding macroscopic system as the inertia approaches zero.

The global Cauchy problem for the Euler-Riesz equations

We completely resolve the global Cauchy problem for the multi-dimensional Euler-Riesz equations, where the interaction forcing is given by $\nabla (-Δ)^{-σ/2}ρ$ for some $σ\in (0,2)$. We construct the global-in-time unique solution to the Euler-Riesz system in a $H^s$ Sobolev space under a smallness assumption on the initial density and a dispersive spectral condition on the initial velocity. Moreover, we investigate the algebraic time decay of convergences for the constructed solutions. Our results cover the both attractive and repulsive cases as well as the whole regime $σ\in (0,2)$.

Damped Euler system with attractive Riesz interaction forces

We consider the barotropic Euler equations with pairwise attractive Riesz interactions and linear velocity damping in the periodic domain. We establish the global-in-time well-posedness theory for the system near an equilibrium state. We also analyze the large-time behavior of solutions showing the exponential rate of convergence toward the equilibrium state as time goes to infinity.

A revisit to the pressureless Euler--Navier--Stokes system in the whole space and its optimal temporal decay

In this paper, we present a refined framework for the global-in-time well-posedness theory for the pressureless Euler--Navier--Stokes system and the optimal temporal decay rates of certain norms of solutions. Here the coupling of two systems, pressureless Euler system and incompressible Navier--Stoke system, is through the drag force. We construct the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of regular solutions for the pressureless Euler--Navier--Stokes system without using a priori large time behavior estimates. Moreover, we seek for the optimal Sobolev regularity for the solutions. Concerning the temporal decay for solutions, we show that the fluid velocities exhibit the same decay rate as that of the heat equations. In particular, our result provides that the temporal decay rate of difference between two velocities, which is faster than the fluid velocities themselves, are at least the same as the second-order derivatives of fluid velocities.

Global existence of weak solutions to a BGK model relaxing to the barotropic Euler equations

We establish the global-in-time existence of weak solutions to a variant of the BGK model proposed by Bouchut [J. Stat. Phys., 95, (1999), 113--170] which leads to the barotropic Euler equations in the hydrodynamic limit. Our existence theory makes the quantified estimates of hydrodynamic limit from the BGK-type equations to the multi-dimensional barotropic Euler system discussed by Berthelin and Vasseur [SIAM J. Math. Anal., 36, (2005), 1807--1835] completely rigorous.

From BGK-alignment model to the pressured Euler-alignment system with singular communication weights

This paper is devoted to a rigorous derivation of the isentropic Euler-alignment system with singular communication weights $ϕ_α(x) = |x|^{-α}$ for some $α> 0$. We consider a kinetic BGK-alignment model consisting of a kinetic BGK-type equation with a singular Cucker-Smale alignment force. By taking into account a small relaxation parameter, which corresponds to the asymptotic regime of a strong effect from BGK operator, we quantitatively derive the isentropic Euler-alignment system with pressure $p(ρ) = ρ^γ$, $γ= 1 + \frac2d$ from that kinetic equation.

Local well-posedness for the compressible Navier-Stokes-BGK model in Sobolev spaces with exponential weight

Sprays are complex flows constituted of dispersed particles in an underlying gas. In this paper, we are interested in the equations for moderately thick sprays consisting of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and Boltzmann BGK equation. Here the coupling of two equations is through a friction (or drag) force which depends on the density of compressible fluid and the relative velocity between particles and fluid. For the Navier-Stokes-BGK system, we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions in Sobolev spaces with exponential weight.

Global-in-time existence of weak solutions for Vlasov-Manev-Fokker-Planck system

We consider the Vlasov-Manev-Fokker-Planck (VMFP) system in three dimensions, which differs from the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck in that it has the gravitational potential of the form $-1/r - 1/r^2$ instead of the Newtonian one. For the VMFP system, we establish the global-in-time existence of weak solutions. The proof extends to several related kinetic systems.

Well-posedness and singularity formation for Vlasov--Riesz system

We investigate the Cauchy problem for the Vlasov--Riesz system, which is a Vlasov equation featuring an interaction potential generalizing previously studied cases, including the Coulomb $Φ= (-Δ)^{-1}ρ$, Manev $(-Δ)^{-1} + (-Δ)^{-\frac12}$, and pure Manev $(-Δ)^{-\frac12}$ potentials. For the first time, we extend the local theory of classical solutions to potentials more singular than that for the Manev. Then, we obtain finite-time singularity formation for solutions with various attractive interaction potentials, extending the well-known blow-up result of Horst for attractive Vlasov--Poisson for $d\ge4$. Our local well-posedness and singularity formation results extend to cases when linear diffusion and damping in velocity are present.

Modulated energy estimates for singular kernels and their applications to asymptotic analyses for kinetic equations

In this paper, we provide modulated interaction energy estimates for the kernel $K(x) = |x|^{-α}$ with $α\in (0,d)$, and its applications to quantified asymptotic analyses for kinetic equations. The proof relies on a dimension extension argument for an elliptic operator and its commutator estimates. For the applications, we first discuss the quantified small inertia limit of kinetic equation with singular nonlocal interactions. The aggregation equations with singular interaction kernels are rigorously derived. We also study the rigorous quantified hydrodynamic limit of the kinetic equation to derive the isothermal Euler or pressureless Euler system with the nonlocal singular interactions forces.

One dimensional consensus based algorithm for non-convex optimization

We analyze the consensus based optimization method proposed by Pinnau et al.(2017) in one dimension. We rigorously provide a quantitative error estimate between the consensus point and global minimizer of a given objective function. Our analysis covers general objective functions; we do not require any structural assumption on the objective function.

On regular solutions and singularity formation for Vlasov/Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities and vacuum

We analyze the Vlasov equation coupled with the compressible Navier--Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities and vacuum. These two equations are coupled through the drag force which depends on the fluid density and the relative velocity between particle and fluid. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of local-in-time regular solutions with arbitrarily large initial data and a vacuum. We then present sufficient conditions on the initial data leading to the finite-time blowup of regular solutions. In particular, our study makes the result on the finite-time singularity formation for Vlasov/Navier-Stokes equations discussed by Choi [J. Math. Pures Appl., 108, (2017), 991-1021] completely rigorous.

Quantified overdamped limit for kinetic Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations with singular interaction forces

We establish a quantitfied overdamped limit for kinetic Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations with nonlocal interaction forces. We provide explicit bounds on the error between solutions of that kinetic equation and the limiting equation, which is known under the names of aggregation-diffusion equation or McKean-Vlasov equation. Introducing an intermediate system via a coarse-graining map, we quantitatively estimate the error between the spatial densities of the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation and the intermediate system in the Wasserstein distance of order 2. We then derive an evolution-variational-like inequality for Wasserstein gradient flows which allows us to quantify the error between the intermediate system and the corresponding limiting equation. Our strategy only requires weak integrability of the interaction potentials, thus in particular it includes the quantified overdamped limit of the kinetic Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system to the aggregation-diffusion equation with either repulsive electrostatic or attractive gravitational interactions.

Controlled pattern formation of stochastic Cucker-Smale systems with network structures

We present a new stochastic particle system on networks which describes the flocking behavior and pattern formation. More precisely, we consider Cucker-Smale particles with decentralized formation control and multiplicative noises on symmetric and connected networks. Under suitable assumptions on the initial configurations and the network structure, we establish time-asymptotic stochastic flocking behavior and pattern formation of solutions for the proposed stochastic particle system. Our approach is based on the Lyapunov functional energy estimates, and it does not require any spectral information of the graph associated with the network structure.

The pressureless damped Euler-Riesz equations

In this paper, we analyze the pressureless damped Euler-Riesz equations posed in either $\mathbb{R}^d$ or $\mathbb{T}^d$. We construct the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for the system around a constant background state. We also establish large-time behaviors of classical solutions showing the solutions towards the equilibrium as time goes to infinity. For the whole space case, we first show the algebraic decay rate of solutions under additional assumptions on the initial data compared to the existence theory. We then refine the argument to have the exponential decay rate of convergence even in the whole space. In the case of the periodic domain, without any further regularity assumptions on the initial data, we provide the exponential convergence of solutions.

Large friction-high force fields limit for the nonlinear Vlasov--Poisson--Fokker--Planck system

We provide a quantitative asymptotic analysis for the nonlinear Vlasov--Poisson--Fokker--Planck system with a large linear friction force and high force-fields. The limiting system is a diffusive model with nonlocal velocity fields often referred to as aggregation-diffusion equations. We show that a weak solution to the Vlasov--Poisson--Fokker--Planck system strongly converges to a strong solution to the diffusive model. Our proof relies on the modulated macroscopic kinetic energy estimate based on the weak-strong uniqueness principle together with a careful analysis of the Poisson equation.

Relaxation to fractional porous medium equation from Euler--Riesz system

We perform asymptotic analysis for the Euler--Riesz system posed in either $\mathbb{T}^d$ or $\mathbb{R}^d$ in the high-force regime and establish a quantified relaxation limit result from the Euler--Riesz system to the fractional porous medium equation. We provide a unified approach for asymptotic analysis regardless of the presence of pressure, based on the modulated energy estimates, the Wasserstein distance of order $2$, and the bounded Lipschitz distance.
