On the dynamics of charged particles in an incompressible flow: from kinetic-fluid to fluid-fluid models

In this paper, we are interested in the dynamics of charged particles interacting with the incompressible viscous flow. More precisely, we consider the Vlasov-Poisson or Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equation coupled with the incompressible Navier-Stokes system through the drag force. For the proposed kinetic-fluid model, we study the asymptotic regime corresponding to strong local alignment and diffusion forces. Under suitable assumptions on the initial data, we rigorously derive a coupled isothermal/pressureless Euler-Poisson system and incompressible Navier-Stokes system(in short, EPNS system). For this hydrodynamic limit, we employ the modulated kinetic energy estimate together with the relative entropy method and the bounded Lipschitz distance. We also construct a global-in-time strong solvability for the isothermal/pressureless EPNS system. In particular, this global-in-time solvability gives the estimates of hydrodynamic limit hold for all time.

A review on attractive-repulsive hydrodynamics for consensus in collective behavior

This survey summarizes and illustrates the main qualitative properties of hydrodynamics models for collective behavior. These models include a velocity consensus term together with attractive-repulsive potentials leading to non-trivial flock profiles. The connection between the underlying particle systems to the swarming hydrodynamic equations is performed through kinetic theory modelling arguments. We focus on Lagrangian schemes for the hydrodynamic systems showing the different qualitative behavior of the systems and its capability of keeping properties of the original particle models. We illustrate known results concerning large time profiles and blow-up in finite time of the hydrodynamic systems to validate the numerical scheme. We finally explore unknown situations making use of the numerical scheme showcasing a number of conjectures based on the numerical results.

Large friction limit of pressureless Euler equations with nonlocal forces

We rigorously show a large friction limit of hydrodynamic models with alignment, attractive, and repulsive effects. More precisely, we consider pressureless Euler equations with nonlocal forces and provide a quantitative estimate of large friction limit to a continuity equation with nonlocal velocity fields, which is often called an aggregation equation. Our main strategy relies on the relative entropy argument combined with the estimate of $p$-Wasserstein distance between densities.

On well-posedness and singularity formation for the Euler-Riesz system

In this paper, we investigate the initial value problem for the Euler-Riesz system, where the interaction forcing is given by $\nabla(-Δ)^{s}ρ$ for some $-1<s<0$, with $s = -1$ corresponding to the classical Euler-Poisson system. We develop a functional framework to establish local-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for the Euler-Riesz system. In this framework, the fluid density could decay fast at infinity, and the Euler-Poisson system can be covered as a special case. Moreover, we prove local well-posedness for the pressureless Euler-Riesz system when the potential is repulsive, by observing hyperbolic nature of the system. Finally, we present sufficient conditions on the finite-time blowup of classical solutions for the isentropic/isothermal Euler-Riesz system with either attractive or repulsive interaction forces. The proof, which is based on estimates of several physical quantities, establishes finite-time blowup for a large class of initial data; in particular, it is not required that the density is of compact support.

On the Cauchy problem for the pressureless Euler-Navier-Stokes system in the whole space

In this paper, we study the global Cauchy problem for a two-phase fluid model consisting of the pressureless Euler equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations where the coupling of two equations is through the drag force. We establish the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for that system when the initial data are sufficiently small and regular. Main difficulties arise in the absence of pressure in the Euler equations. In order to resolve it, we properly combine the large-time behavior of classical solutions and the bootstrapping argument to construct the global-in-time unique classical solutions.

Mean-field limits: from particle descriptions to macroscopic equations

We rigorously derive pressureless Euler-type equations with nonlocal dissipative terms in velocity and aggregation equations with nonlocal velocity fields from Newton-type particle descriptions of swarming models with alignment interactions. We crucially make use of a discrete version of a modulated kinetic energy together with the bounded Lipschitz distance for measures in order to control terms in its time derivative due to the nonlocal interactions.

Temporal decays and asymptotic behaviors for a Vlasov equation with a flocking term coupled to incompressible fluid flow

We are concerned with large-time behaviors of solutions for Vlasov--Navier--Stokes equations in two dimensions and Vlasov-Stokes system in three dimensions including the effect of velocity alignment/misalignment. We first revisit the large-time behavior estimate for our main system and refine assumptions on the dimensions and a communication weight function. In particular, this allows us to take into account the effect of the misalignment interactions between particles. We then use a sharp heat kernel estimate to obtain the exponential time decay of fluid velocity to its average in $L^\infty$-norm. For the kinetic part, by employing a certain type of Sobolev norm weighted by modulations of averaged particle velocity, we prove the exponential time decay of the particle distribution, provided that local particle distribution function is uniformly bounded. Moreover, we show that the support of particle distribution function in velocity shrinks to a point, which is the mean of averaged initial particle and fluid velocities, exponentially fast as time goes to infinity. This also provides that for any $p \in [1,\infty]$, the $p$-Wasserstein distance between the particle distribution function and the tensor product of the local particle distributions and Dirac measure at that point in velocity converges exponentially fast to zero as time goes to infinity.

Quantifying the hydrodynamic limit of Vlasov-type equations with alignment and nonlocal forces

In this paper, we quantify the asymptotic limit of collective behavior kinetic equations arising in mathematical biology modeled by Vlasov-type equations with nonlocal interaction forces and alignment. More precisely, we investigate the hydrodynamic limit of a kinetic Cucker--Smale flocking model with confinement, nonlocal interaction, and local alignment forces, linear damping and diffusion in velocity. We first discuss the hydrodynamic limit of our main equation under strong local alignment and diffusion regime, and we rigorously derive the isothermal Euler equations with nonlocal forces. We also analyze the hydrodynamic limit corresponding to strong local alignment without diffusion. In this case, the limiting system is pressureless Euler-type equations. Our analysis includes the Coulombian interaction potential for both cases and explicit estimates on the distance towards the limiting hydrodynamic equations. The relative entropy method is the crucial technology in our main results, however, for the case without diffusion, we combine a modulated macroscopic kinetic energy with the bounded Lipschitz distance to deal with the nonlocality in the interaction forces. For the sake of completeness, the existence of weak and strong solutions to the kinetic and fluid equations are also established.

Asymptotic analysis for a Vlasov-Fokker-Planck/Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain

We study an asymptotic analysis of a coupled system of kinetic and fluid equations. More precisely, we deal with the nonlinear Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation coupled with the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes system through a drag force in a bounded domain with the specular reflection boundary condition for the kinetic equation and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition for the fluid system. We establish a rigorous hydrodynamic limit corresponding to strong noise and local alignment force. The limiting system is a type of two-phase fluid model consisting of the isothermal Euler system and the compressible Navier-Stokes system. Our main strategy relies on the relative entropy argument based on the weak-strong uniqueness principle. For this, we provide a global-in-time existence of weak solutions for the coupled kinetic-fluid system. We also show the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the limiting system in a bounded domain with the kinematic boundary condition for the Euler system and Dirichlet boundary condition for the Navier-Stokes system.

One dimensional singular Cucker-Smale model: uniform-in-time mean-field limit and contractivity

We analyze the one dimensional Cucker-Smale (in short CS) model with a weak singular communication weight $ψ(x) = |x|^{-β}$ with $β\in (0,1)$. We first establish a global-in-time existence of measure-valued solutions to the kinetic CS equation. For this, we use a proper change of variable to reformulate the particle CS model as a first-order particle system and provide the uniform-in-time stability for that particle system. We then extend this stability estimate for the singular CS particle system. By using that stability estimate, we construct the measure-valued solutions to the kinetic CS equation globally in time. Moreover, as a direct application of the uniform-in-time stability estimate, we show the quantitative uniform-in-time mean-field limit from the particle system to that kinetic CS equation in $p$-Wasserstein distance with $p \in [1,\infty]$. Our result gives the uniqueness of measure-valued solution in the sense of mean-field limits, i.e., the measure-valued solutions, approximated by the empirical measures associated to the particle system, uniquely exist. Similar results for the first-order model also follow as a by-product. We also reformulate the continuity-type equation, which is derived from the first-order model, as an integro-differential equation by employing the pseudo-inverse of the accumulative particle distribution. By making use of a modified $p$-Wasserstein distance, we provide the contractivity estimate for absolutely continuous solutions of the continuum equation.

A sharp error analysis for the discontinuous Galerkin method of optimal control problems

In this paper, we are concerned with a nonlinear optimal control problem of ordinary differential equations. We consider a discretization of the problem with the discontinuous Galerkin method with arbitrary order $r \in \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$. Under suitable regularity assumptions on the cost functional and solutions of the state equations, we provide sharp estimates for the error of the approximate solutions. Numerical experiments are presented supporting the theoretical results.

Quantitative error estimates for the large friction limit of Vlasov equation with nonlocal forces

We study an asymptotic limit of Vlasov type equation with nonlocal interaction forces where the friction terms are dominant. We provide a quantitative estimate of this large friction limit from the kinetic equation to a continuity type equation with a nonlocal velocity field, the so-called aggregation equation, by employing $2$-Wasserstein distance. By introducing an intermediate system, given by the pressureless Euler equations with nonlocal forces, we can quantify the error between the spatial densities of the kinetic equation and the pressureless Euler system by means of relative entropy type arguments combined with the $2$-Wasserstein distance. This together with the quantitative error estimate between the pressureless Euler system and the aggregation equation in $2$-Wasserstein distance in [Commun. Math. Phys, 365, (2019), 329--361] establishes the quantitative bounds on the error between the kinetic equation and the aggregation equation.

Existence and hydrodynamic limit for a Paveri-Fontana type kinetic traffic model

We study a Paveri-Fontana type model, which describes the evolution of the mesoscopic distribution of vehicles through a combined effect of adjustment of the velocity with respect to nearby vehicles, and slowing down and speeding up of the vehicles arising as a result of exchange of velocity with the vehicles on the same location on the road. We first prove the global-in-time existence of weak solutions. The proof is via energy, $L^p$, and compact support estimates together with velocity averaging lemma. The combined effect of alignment nature of $Q_r$, which keeps the characteristic from spreading, and the dissipative nature of $Q_i$, which gives the uniform control on the size of the distribution function, is crucially used in the estimates. We also rigorously establish a hydrodynamic limit to the presureless Euler equation by employing the relative entropy combined with the Monge-Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance.

Exponential synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators with time delayed coupling

We discuss the asymptotic frequency synchronization for the non-identical Kuramoto oscillators with time delayed interactions. We provide explicit lower bound on the coupling strength and upper bound on time delay in terms of initial configurations ensuring exponential synchronization. This generalizes not only the frequency synchronization estimate by Choi et al. [Physica D, 241, (2012), 735-754] for the non-identical Kuramoto oscillators without time delays but also improves previous result by Schmidt et al. [Automatica, 48, (2012), 3008-3017] in the case of homogeneous time delays where the initial phase diameter is assumed to be less than $π/2$. The proof relies on a Lyapunov functional approach.

Strong solutions to the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes-BGK system

In this paper, we are concerned with the local-in-time well-posedness of a fluid-kinetic model in which the BGK model with density dependent collision frequency is coupled with the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equation through drag forces. To the best knowledge of authors, this is the first result on the existence of local-in-time smooth solution for particle-fluid model with nonlinear inter-particle operator for which the existence of time can be prolonged as the size of initial data gets smaller.

Consensus of the Hegselmann-Krause opinion formation model with time delay

In this paper, we study Hegselmann-Krause models with a time-variable time delay. Under appropriate assumptions, we show the exponential asymptotic consensus when the time delay satisfies a suitable smallness assumption. Our main strategies for this are based on Lyapunov functional approach and careful estimates on the trajectories. We then study the mean-field limit from the many-individual Hegselmann-Krause equation to the continuity-type partial differential equation as the number N of individuals goes to infinity. For the limiting equation, we prove global-in-time existence and uniqueness of measure-valued solutions. We also use the fact that constants appearing in the consensus estimates for the particle system are independent of N to extend the exponential consensus result to the continuum model. Finally, some numerical tests are illustrated.

A collisionless singular Cucker-Smale model with decentralized formation control

We address the design of decentralized feedback control laws inducing consensus and prescribed spatial patterns over a singular interacting particle system of Cucker-Smale type. The control design consists of a feedback term regulating the distance between each agent and pre-assigned subset of neighbours. Such a design represents a multidimensional extension of existing control laws for 1d platoon formation control. For the proposed controller we study consensus emergence, collision-avoidance and formation control features in terms of energy estimates for the closed-loop system. Numerical experiments in 1, 2 and 3 dimensions assess the different features of the proposed design.

Emergent behavior of Cucker-Smale model with normalized weights and distributed time delays

We study a Cucker-Smale-type flocking model with distributed time delay where individuals interact with each other through normalized communication weights. Based on a Lyapunov functional approach, we provide sufficient conditions for the velocity alignment behavior. We then show that as the number of individuals N tends to infinity, the N-particle system can be well approximated by a delayed Vlasov alignment equation. Furthermore, we also establish the global existence of measure-valued solutions for the delayed Vlasov alignment equation and its large-time asymptotic behavior.
