A hydrodynamic model for synchronization phenomena

We present a new hydrodynamic model for synchronization phenomena which is a type of pressureless Euler system with nonlocal interaction forces. This system can be formally derived from the Kuramoto model with inertia, which is a classical model of interacting phase oscillators widely used to investigate synchronization phenomena, through a kinetic description under the mono-kinetic closure assumption. For the proposed system, we first establish local-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions. For the case of identical natural frequencies, we provide synchronization estimates under suitable assumptions on the initial configurations. We also analyze critical thresholds leading to finite-time blow-up or global-in-time existence of classical solutions. In particular, our proposed model exhibits the finite-time blow-up phenomenon, which is not observed in the classical Kuramoto models, even with a smooth distribution function for natural frequencies. Finally, we numerically investigate synchronization, finite-time blow-up, phase transitions, and hysteresis phenomena.

Asymptotic analysis for Vlasov-Fokker-Planck/compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a density-dependent viscosity

We study a hydrodynamic limit of a system of coupled kinetic and fluid equations under a strong local alignment force and a strong Brownian motion. More precisely, we consider the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck type equation and compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a density-dependent viscosity. Based on a relative entropy argument, by assuming the existence of weak solutions to that kinetic-fluid system, we rigorously derive a two-phase fluid model consisting of isothermal Euler equations and compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a density-dependent viscosity.

Structure preserving schemes for the continuum Kuramoto model: phase transitions

The construction of numerical schemes for the Kuramoto model is challenging due to the structural properties of the system which are essential in order to capture the correct physical behavior, like the description of stationary states and phase transitions. Additional difficulties are represented by the high dimensionality of the problem in presence of multiple frequencies. In this paper, we develop numerical methods which are capable to preserve these structural properties of the Kuramoto equation in the presence of diffusion and to solve efficiently the multiple frequencies case. The novel schemes are then used to numerically investigate the phase transitions in the case of identical and non identical oscillators.

Convergence to Equilibrium in Wasserstein distance for damped Euler equations with interaction forces

We develop tools to construct Lyapunov functionals on the space of probability measures in order to investigate the convergence to global equilibrium of a damped Euler system under the influence of external and interaction potential forces with respect to the 2-Wasserstein distance. We also discuss the overdamped limit to a nonlocal equation used in the modelling of granular media with respect to the 2-Wasserstein distance, and provide rigorous proofs for particular examples in one spatial dimension.

Asymptotic stability of the phase-homogeneous solution to the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi equation with inertia

We present the global-in-time existence of strong solutions and its large-time behavior for the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi equation with inertia. The equation describes the evolution of the probability density function for a large ensemble of Kuramoto oscillators under the effects of inertia and stochastic noises. We consider a perturbative framework around the equilibrium, which is a Maxwellian type, and use the classical energy method together with our careful analysis on the macro-micro decomposition. We establish the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions when the initial data are sufficiently regular, not necessarily close to the equilibrium, and the noise strength is also large enough. For the large-time behavior, we show the exponential decay of solutions towards the equilibrium under the same assumptions as those for the global regularity of solutions.

An analytical framework for a consensus-based global optimization method

In this paper we provide an analytical framework for investigating the efficiency of a consensus-based model for tackling global optimization problems. This work justifies the optimization algorithm in the mean-field sense showing the convergence to the global minimizer for a large class of functions. Theoretical results on consensus estimates are then illustrated by numerical simulations where variants of the method including nonlinear diffusion are introduced.

Propagation of chaos for the VPFP equation with a polynomial cut-off

We consider a $N$-particle system interacting through the Newtonian potential with a polynomial cut-off in the presence of noise in velocity. We rigorously prove the propagation of chaos for this interacting stochastic particle system. Taking the cut-off like $N^{-δ}$ with $δ< 1/d$ in the force, we provide a quantitative error estimate between the empirical measure associated to that $N$-particle system and the solutions of the $d$-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system. We also study the propagation of chaos for the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation with less singular interaction forces than the Newtonian one.

Pressureless Euler alignment system with control

We study a non-local hydrodynamic system with control. First we characterize the control dynamics as a sub-optimal approximation to the optimal control problem constrained to the evolution of the pressureless Euler alignment system. We then discuss the critical thresholds that leading to global regularity or finite-time blow-up of strong solutions in one and two dimensions. Finally we propose a finite volume scheme for numerical solutions of the controlled system. Several numerical simulations are shown to validate the theoretical and computational results of the paper.

Global existence of weak solutions for Navier-Stokes-BGK system

In this paper, we study the global well-posedness of a coupled system of kinetic and fluid equations. More precisely, we establish the global existence of weak solutions for Navier-Stokes-BGK system consisting of the BGK model of Boltzmann equation and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled through a drag forcing term. This is achieved by combining weak compactness of the particle interaction operator based on Dunford-Pettis theorem, strong compactness of macroscopic fields of the kinetic part relied on velocity averaging lemma and a high order moment estimate, and strong compactness of the fluid part by Aubin-Lions lemma.

The global Cauchy problem for compressible Euler equations with a nonlocal dissipation

This paper studies the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions and its large-time behavior for the compressible isothermal Euler equations with a nonlocal dissipation. The system is rigorously derived from the kinetic Cucker-Smale flocking equation with strong local alignment forces and diffusions through the hydrodynamic limit based on the relative entropy argument. In a perturbation framework, we establish the global existence of a unique strong solution for the system under suitable smallness and regularity assumptions on the initial data. We also provide the large-time behavior of solutions showing the fluid density and the velocity converge to its averages exponentially fast as time goes to infinity.

Emergent behavior of Cucker-Smale flocking particles with time delays

We analyze Cucker-Smale flocking particles with delayed coupling, where different constant delays are considered between particles. By constructing a system of dissipative differential inequalities together with a continuity argument, we provide a sufficient condition for the flocking behavior when the maximum value of time delays is sufficiently small.

Cucker-Smale flocking particles with multiplicative noises: stochastic mean-field limit and phase transition

In this paper, we consider the Cucker-Smale flocking particles which are subject to the same velocity-dependent noise, which exhibits a phase change phenomenon occurs bringing the system from a "non flocking" to a "flocking" state as the strength of noises decreases. We rigorously show the stochastic mean-field limit from the many-particle Cucker-Smale system with multiplicative noises to the Vlasov-type stochastic partial differential equation as the number of particles goes to infinity. More precisely, we provide a quantitative error estimate between solutions to the stochastic particle system and measure-valued solutions to the expected limiting stochastic partial differential equation by using the Wasserstein distance. For the limiting equation, we construct global-in-time measure-valued solutions and study the stability and large-time behavior showing the convergence of velocities to their mean exponentially fast almost surely.

Emergent dynamics of the Kuramoto ensemble under the effect of inertia

We study the emergent collective behaviors for an ensemble of identical Kuramoto oscillators under the effect of inertia. In the absence of inertial effects, it is well known that the generic initial Kuramoto ensemble relaxes to the phase-locked states asymptotically (emergence of complete synchronization) in a large coupling regime. Similarly, even for the presence of inertial effects, similar collective behaviors are observed numerically for generic initial configurations in a large coupling strength regime. However, this phenomenon has not been verified analytically in full generality yet, although there are several partial results in some restricted set of initial configurations. In this paper, we present several improved complete synchronization estimates for the Kuramoto ensemble with inertia in two frameworks for a finite system. Our improved frameworks describe the emergence of phase-locked states and its structure. Additionally, we show that as the number of oscillators tends to infinity, the Kuramoto ensemble with infinite size can be approximated by the corresponding kinetic mean-field model uniformly in time. Moreover, we also establish the global existence of measure-valued solutions for the Kuramoto equation and its large-time asymptotics.

Hydrodynamic Cucker-Smale model with normalized communication weights and time delay

We study a hydrodynamic Cucker-Smale-type model with time delay in communication and information processing, in which agents interact with each other through normalized communication weights. The model consists of a pressureless Euler system with time delayed non-local alignment forces. We resort to its Lagrangian formulation and prove the existence of its global in time classical solutions. Moreover, we derive a sufficient condition for the asymptotic flocking behavior of the solutions. Finally, we show the presence of a critical phenomenon for the Eulerian system posed in the spatially one-dimensional setting.

Propagation of chaos for aggregation equations with no-flux boundary conditions and sharp sensing zones

We consider a $N$-particle interacting particle system with the vision geometrical constraints and reflected noises, proposed as a model for collective behavior of individuals. We rigorously derive a continuity-type of mean-field equation with discontinuous kernels and the normal reflecting boundary conditions from that stochastic particle system as the number of particles $N$ goes to infinity. More precisely, we provide a quantitative estimate of the convergence in law of the empirical measure associated to the particle system to a probability measure which possesses a density which is a weak solution to the continuity equation. This extends previous results on an interacting particle system with bounded and Lipschitz continuous drift terms and normal reflecting boundary conditions by Sznitman[J. Funct. Anal., 56, (1984), 311--336] to that one with discontinuous kernels.

Collective behavior models with vision geometrical constraints: truncated noises and propagation of chaos

We consider large systems of stochastic interacting particles through discontinuous kernels which has vision geometrical constrains. We rigorously derive a Vlasov-Fokker-Planck type of kinetic mean-field equation from the corresponding stochastic integral inclusion system. More specifically, we construct a global-in-time weak solution to the stochastic integral inclusion system and derive the kinetic equation with the discontinuous kernels and the inhomogeneous noise strength by employing the 1-Wasserstein distance.

On the region of attraction of phase-locked states for swing equations on connected graphs with inhomogeneous dampings

We consider the synchronization problem of swing equations, a second-order Kuramoto-type model, on connected networks with inhomogeneous dampings. This was largely motivated by its relevance to the dynamics of power grids. We focus on the estimate of the region of attraction of synchronous states which is a central problem in the transient stability of power grids. In the recent literature, Dörfler, Chertkov, and Bullo [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 110 (2013), pp. 2005-2010] found a condition for the synchronization in smart grids. They pointed out that the region of attraction is an important unsolved problem. In [SIAM J. Control Optim., 52 (2014), pp. 2482-2511], only a special case was considered where the oscillators have homogeneous dampings and the underlying graph has a diameter less than or equal to 2. There the analysis heavily relies on these assumptions; however, they are too strict compared to the real power networks. In this paper, we continue the study and derive an estimate on the region of attraction of phase-locked states for lossless power grids on connected graphs with inhomogeneous dampings. Our main strategy is based on the gradient-like formulation and energy estimate. We refine the assumptions by constructing a new energy functional which enables us to consider such general settings.

Sharp conditions to avoid collisions in singular Cucker-Smale interactions

We consider the Cucker-Smale flocking model with a singular communication weight $ψ(s) = s^{-α}$ with $α> 0$. We provide a critical value of the exponent $α$ in the communication weight leading to global regularity of solutions or finite-time collision between particles. For $α\geq 1$, we show that there is no collision between particles in finite time if they are placed in different positions initially. For $α\geq 2$ we investigate a version of the Cucker-Smale model with expanded singularity i.e. with weight $ψ_δ(s) = (s-δ)^{-α}$, $δ\geq 0$. For such model we provide a uniform with respect to the number of particles estimate that controls the $δ$-distance between particles. In case of $δ= 0$ it reduces to the estimate of non-collisioness.
