Physical Layer Security Enhancement Exploiting Intelligent Reflecting Surface

In this letter, the use of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to enhance the physical layer security of downlink wireless communication is investigated. Assuming a single-antenna legitimate user and a multi-antenna eavesdropper, we propose an effective algorithm to jointly optimize the active and passive beamforming. In the proposed algorithm, the optimal transmit beamforming vector at the BS under fixed IRS phase shifts is derived, and a low-complexity algorithm based on fractional programming (FP) and manifold optimization (MO) is proposed to obtain near optimal IRS phase shifts. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can almost achieve the performance upper bound with a fast convergence rate.

From Design Draft to Real Attire: Unaligned Fashion Image Translation

Fashion manipulation has attracted growing interest due to its great application value, which inspires many researches towards fashion images. However, little attention has been paid to fashion design draft. In this paper, we study a new unaligned translation problem between design drafts and real fashion items, whose main challenge lies in the huge misalignment between the two modalities. We first collect paired design drafts and real fashion item images without pixel-wise alignment. To solve the misalignment problem, our main idea is to train a sampling network to adaptively adjust the input to an intermediate state with structure alignment to the output. Moreover, built upon the sampling network, we present design draft to real fashion item translation network (D2RNet), where two separate translation streams that focus on texture and shape, respectively, are combined tactfully to get both benefits. D2RNet is able to generate realistic garments with both texture and shape consistency to their design drafts. We show that this idea can be effectively applied to the reverse translation problem and present R2DNet accordingly. Extensive experiments on unaligned fashion design translation demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art methods. Wireless Communications with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface: Path Loss Modeling and Experimental Measurement

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) comprised of tunable unit cells have recently drawn significant attention due to their superior capability in manipulating electromagnetic waves. In particular, RIS-assisted wireless communications have the great potential to achieve significant performance improvement and coverage enhancement in a cost-effective and energy-efficient manner, by properly programming the reflection coefficients of the unit cells of RISs. In this paper, free-space path loss models for RIS-assisted wireless communications are developed for different scenarios by studying the physics and electromagnetic nature of RISs. The proposed models, which are first validated through extensive simulation results, reveal the relationships between the free-space path loss of RIS-assisted wireless communications and the distances from the transmitter/receiver to the RIS, the size of the RIS, the near-field/far-field effects of the RIS, and the radiation patterns of antennas and unit cells. In addition, three fabricated RISs (metasurfaces) are utilized to further corroborate the theoretical findings through experimental measurements conducted in a microwave anechoic chamber. The measurement results match well with the modeling results, thus validating the proposed free-space path loss models for RIS, which may pave the way for further theoretical studies and practical applications in this field.

Testing the weak equivalence principle with the binary neutron star merger GW170817: the gravitational contribution of the host galaxy

The successful detection of the binary neutron star (BNS) merger GW170817 and its electromagnetic (EM) counterparts has provided an opportunity to explore the joint effect of the host galaxy and the Milky Way (MW) on the weak equivalence principle (WEP) test. In this paper, using the Navarro$-$Frenk$-$White (NFW) profile and the Herquist profile, we present an analytic model to calculate the galactic potential, in which the possible locations of the source by the observed angle offset and the second supernova (SN2) kick are accounted for. We show that the upper limit of $Δγ$ is $10^{-9}$ for the comparison between GW170817 and a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A), and it is $10^{-4}$ for the comparison between GW170817 and a bright optical transient (SSS17a, now with the IAU identification of AT 2017gfo). These limits are more stringent by one to two orders of magnitude than those determined solely by the measured MW potential in the literature. We demonstrate that the WEP test is strengthened by contribution from the host galaxy to the Shapiro time delay. Meanwhile, we also find that large natal kicks produce a maximum deviation of about $20\%$ to the results with a typical kick velocity 400$\sim$ 500 km s$^{-1}$. Finally, we analyze the impact from the halo mass of NGC 4993 with a typical 0.2 dex uncertainty, and find that the upper limit of $Δγ$, with a maximum mass $10^{12.4}h^{-1} M_{\odot}$, is nearly two times more stringent than that of the minimum mass $10^{12.0}h^{-1} M_{\odot}$.

Deep Learning Based FDD Non-Stationary Massive MIMO Downlink Channel Reconstruction

This paper proposes a model-driven deep learning-based downlink channel reconstruction scheme for frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. The spatial non-stationarity, which is the key feature of the future extremely large aperture massive MIMO system, is considered. Instead of the channel matrix, the channel model parameters are learned by neural networks to save the overhead and improve the accuracy of channel reconstruction. By viewing the channel as an image, we introduce You Only Look Once (YOLO), a powerful neural network for object detection, to enable a rapid estimation process of the model parameters, including the detection of angles and delays of the paths and the identification of visibility regions of the scatterers. The deep learning-based scheme avoids the complicated iterative process introduced by the algorithm-based parameter extraction methods. A low-complexity algorithm-based refiner further refines the YOLO estimates toward high accuracy. Given the efficiency of model-driven deep learning and the combination of neural network and algorithm, the proposed scheme can rapidly and accurately reconstruct the non-stationary downlink channel. Moreover, the proposed scheme is also applicable to widely concerned stationary systems and achieves comparable reconstruction accuracy as an algorithm-based method with greatly reduced time consumption.

Real-Space Imaging of the Ordered Small Molecule Orientations in Porous Frameworks by Electron Microscopy

The real-space imaging of small molecules is always challenging under the electron microscopes, but highly demanded for investigating various nanoscale interactions, such as hydrogen bond and van der Waals (vdW) force. Especially, identifying the host-guest interactions in porous materials directly at the molecular level will bring a deeper insight into the behaviors of guest molecules during the sorption, catalysis, gas separation and energy storage. In this work, we directly resolved the ordered configurations of p-xylenes (PXs) adsorbed in ZSM-5 frameworks by the scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with the integrated differential phase contrast (iDPC) technique to identify the host-guest vdW interactions. Based on these observations, we revealed that the PXs in one straight channel modified the channel geometry with a coherent orientation. And the adjacent straight channels were deformed up to 8.8% along the different directions corresponding to three dominant PX configurations, resulting a negligible overall expansion of ZSM-5 lattices. Then, we could also image the disorder and desorption of PXs in ZSM-5 channels during the in situ heating. This work not only helped us to study the host-guest vdW interactions and the sorption behaviors of PXs in ZSM-5, but also provided an efficient tool for further imaging and studying other single-molecule behaviors under STEMs.

Loop quantum cosmological dynamics of scalar-tensor theory in the Jordan frame

The effective dynamics of scalar-tensor theory (STT) in the Jordan frame is studied in the context of loop quantum cosmology with holonomy corrections. After deriving the effective Hamiltonian from the connection dynamics formulation, we obtain the holonomy-corrected evolution equations of STT on spatially flat Friedmann-Robterson-Walker background, which exhibit some interesting features unique to the Jordan frame of STT. In particular, the linear term of the cosine function appearing in the equations could lead to dynamics much different from the classical theory in the low-energy limit. In the latter part of this paper, we choose a particular model in STT -- the Brans-Dicke theory to specifically illustrate these features. It is found that in Brans-Dicke theory the effective evolution equations can be classified into four different cases. Exact solutions of the Friedmann equation in terms of the internal time are obtained in these cases. Moreover, the solutions in terms of the proper time describing the late time evolution of the Universe are also obtained under certain approximation; in two cases the solutions coincide with the existing solutions in classical Brans-Dicke theory while in the other two cases the solutions do not.

Channel Estimation for Extremely Large-Scale Massive MIMO Systems

Extremely large-scale massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has shown considerable potential in future mobile communications. However, the use of extremely large aperture arrays has led to near-field and spatial non-stationary channel conditions, which result in changes to transceiver design and channel state information that should be acquired. This letter focuses on the channel estimation problem and describes the non-stationary channel through mapping between subarrays and scatterers. We propose subarray-wise and scatterer-wise channel estimation methods to estimate the near-field non-stationary channel from the view of subarray and scatterer, respectively. Numerical results demonstrate that subarray-wise method can derive accurate channel estimation results with low complexity, whereas the scatterer-wise method can accurately position the scatterers and identify almost all the mappings between subarrays and scatterers.

Multivariate Modeling of Natural Gas Spot Trading Hubs Incorporating Futures Market Realized Volatility

Financial markets for Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) are an important and rapidly-growing segment of commodities markets. Like other commodities markets, there is an inherent spatial structure to LNG markets, with different price dynamics for different points of delivery hubs. Certain hubs support highly liquid markets, allowing efficient and robust price discovery, while others are highly illiquid, limiting the effectiveness of standard risk management techniques. We propose a joint modeling strategy, which uses high-frequency information from thickly-traded hubs to improve volatility estimation and risk management at thinly traded hubs. The resulting model has superior in- and out-of-sample predictive performance, particularly for several commonly used risk management metrics, demonstrating that joint modeling is indeed possible and useful. To improve estimation, a Bayesian estimation strategy is employed and data-driven weakly informative priors are suggested. Our model is robust to sparse data and can be effectively used in any market with similar irregular patterns of data availability.

Complementarity between micro-micro and micro-macro entanglement in a Bose-Einstein condensate with two Rydberg impurities

We theoretically study complementarity between micro-micro and micro-macro entanglement in a Bose-Einstein condensate with two Rydberg impurities. We investigate quantum dynamics of micro-micro and micro-macro entanglement in the micro-macro system. It is found that strong micro-macro entanglement between Rydberg impurities and the BEC can be generated by the use of initial micro-micro entanglement between two Rydberg impurities, which acts as the seed entanglement to create micro-macro entanglement. We demonstrate a curious complementarity relation between micro-micro and micro-macro entanglement, and find that the complementarity property can be sustained to some extend even though in the presence of the BEC decoherence.

FDD Massive MIMO Based on Efficient Downlink Channel Reconstruction

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems deploying a large number of antennas at the base station considerably increase the spectrum efficiency by serving multiple users simultaneously without causing severe interference. However, the advantage relies on the availability of the downlink channel state information (CSI) of multiple users, which is still a challenge in frequency-division-duplex transmission systems. This paper aims to solve this problem by developing a full transceiver framework that includes downlink channel training (or estimation), CSI feedback, and channel reconstruction schemes. Our framework provides accurate reconstruction results for multiple users with small amounts of training and feedback overhead. Specifically, we first develop an enhanced Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit (eNOMP) algorithm to extract the frequency-independent parameters (i.e., downtilts, azimuths, and delays) from the uplink. Then, by leveraging the information from these frequency-independent parameters, we develop an efficient downlink training scheme to estimate the downlink channel gains for multiple users. This training scheme offers an acceptable estimation error rate of the gains with a limited pilot amount. Numerical results verify the precision of the eNOMP algorithm and demonstrate that the sum-rate performance of the system using the reconstructed downlink channel can approach that of the system using perfect CSI.

Large Intelligent Surface-Assisted Wireless Communication Exploiting Statistical CSI

Large intelligent surface (LIS)-assisted wireless communications have drawn attention worldwide. With the use of low-cost LIS on building walls, signals can be reflected by the LIS and sent out along desired directions by controlling its phases, thereby providing supplementary links for wireless communication systems. In this study, we evaluate the performance of an LIS-assisted large-scale antenna system by formulating a tight approximation of the ergodic capacity and investigate the effect of the phase shifts on the ergodic capacity in different propagation scenarios. In particular, we propose an optimal phase shift design based on the ergodic capacity approximation and statistical channel state information. Furthermore, we derive the requirement on the quantization bits of the LIS to promise an acceptable capacity degradation. Numerical results show that using the proposed phase shift design can achieve the maximum ergodic capacity, and a 2-bit quantizer is sufficient to ensure capacity degradation of no more than 1 bit/s/Hz.

Well-defined Fano effect in the Andreev reflection process of a parallel double-quantum-dot structure

We investigate the Andreev reflection in the parallel double-quantum-dot structure, by considering one metallic lead and one $s$-wave superconductor to couple to the quantum dots simultaneously. It is found that the Fano lineshhape has opportunities to appear in the linear conductance spectrum of the Andreev reflection, which can be reversed by tuning the dot level or local magnetic flux. However, the property of the Fano effect is very complicated, in comparison with the normal electron tunnelling case. This is manifested as the special Fano form of the linear-conductance expression and the interference manner among the Feynman paths. We believe that this work can be helpful for understanding the Fano interference in the Andreev reflection process.

Sapiens Chain: A Blockchain-based Cybersecurity Framework

Recently, cybersecurity becomes more and more important due to the rapid development of Internet. However, existing methods are in reality highly sensitive to attacks and are far more vulnerable than expected, as they are lack of trustable measures. In this paper, to address the aforementioned problems, we propose a blockchain-based cybersecurity framework, termed as Sapiens Chain, which can protect the privacy of the anonymous users and ensure that the transactions are immutable by providing decentralized and trustable services. Integrating semantic analysis, symbolic execution, and routing learning methods into intelligent auditing, this framework can achieve good accuracy for detecting hidden vulnerabilities. In addition, a revenue incentive mechanism, which aims to donate participants, is built. The practical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Cosmological perturbations with inverse-volume corrections in loop quantum cosmology

Although the cosmological perturbations with inverse-volume corrections from loop quantum cosmology have been studied using the anomaly-free algebra approach in much of the literature, there still remains an important issue that some counterterms in the perturbed constraints cannot be uniquely fixed on the spatially flat Friedmann-Robterson-Walker background, which causes ambiguities in the perturbation equations. In this paper, we show that this problem can be overcome by extending the anomaly-free algebra to the spatially closed Friedmann-Robterson-Walker background. We find that a consistent deformed algebra can be obtained in the spatially closed case, and each counter term can be uniquely fixed in terms of the inverse-volume correction functions; then, by taking the large $r_o$ limit, we recover the anomaly-free Hamiltonian on the spatially flat background. Using this Hamiltonian we obtain the gauge invariant cosmological perturbations for scalar, vector and tensor modes in the spatially flat case. Moreover, we also derive the quantum-corrected Mukhanov equations, from which the scalar and tensor spectral indices with inverse-volume corrections are given. Some key cosmological perturbation equations obtained in this paper are different from those in previous literature.

Efficient Downlink Channel Reconstruction for FDD Multi-Antenna Systems

In this paper, we propose an efficient downlink channel reconstruction scheme for a frequency-division-duplex multi-antenna system by utilizing uplink channel state information combined with limited feedback. Based on the spatial reciprocity in a wireless channel, the downlink channel is reconstructed by using frequency-independent parameters. We first estimate the gains, delays, and angles during uplink sounding. The gains are then refined through downlink training and sent back to the base station (BS). With limited overhead, the refinement can substantially improve the accuracy of the downlink channel reconstruction. The BS can then reconstruct the downlink channel with the uplink-estimated delays and angles and the downlink-refined gains. We also introduce and extend the Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit (NOMP) algorithm to detect the delays and gains in a multi-antenna multi-subcarrier condition. The results of our analysis show that the extended NOMP algorithm achieves high estimation accuracy. Simulations and over-the-air tests are performed to assess the performance of the efficient downlink channel reconstruction scheme. The results show that the reconstructed channel is close to the practical channel and that the accuracy is enhanced when the number of BS antennas increases, thereby highlighting that the promising application of the proposed scheme in large-scale antenna array systems.

A time-efficient frame size adjustment based approach for RFID anti-collision

Fast and efficient identify a large number of RFID tags in the region of interest is a critical issue in various RFID applications. In this paper, a novel sub-frame-based algorithm with a time-efficient frame size adjustment strategy to reduce the time complexity for EPCglobal C1 Gen2 UHF RFID standard is proposed. By observing the slot statistics in a sub-frame, the tag quantity is estimated by the reader, which afterwards efficiently calculates an optimal frame size to fit the unread tags. Only when the expected time efficiency in the oncoming frame is higher than that in the previous frame, the reader starts the new identification round with the updated frame. Moreover, the estimation of the proposed algorithm is implemented by the look-up tables, which allows dramatically reduction in the computational complexity. Simulation results show noticeable throughput, time efficiency, and identification speed improvements of the proposed solution over the existing approaches.

DFT-Based Hybrid Beamforming Multiuser Systems: Rate Analysis and Beam Selection

This paper considers the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based hybrid beamforming multiuser system and studies the use of analog beam selection schemes. We first analyze the uplink ergodic achievable rates of the zero-forcing (ZF) receiver and the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) receiver under Ricean fading conditions. We then examine the downlink ergodic achievable rates for the ZF and maximum-ratio transmitting (MRT) precoders. The long-term and short-term normalization methods are introduced, which utilize long-term and instantaneous channel state information (CSI) to implement the downlink power normalization, respectively. Also, approximations and asymptotic expressions of both the uplink and downlink rates are obtained, which facilitate the analog beam selection solutions to maximize the achievable rates. An exhaustive search provides the optimal results but to reduce the time-consumption, we resort to the derived rate limits and propose the second selection scheme based on the projected power of the line-of-sight (LoS) paths. We then combine the advantages of the two schemes and propose a two-step scheme that achieves near optimal performances with much less time-consumption than exhaustive search. Numerical results confirm the analytical results of the ergodic achievable rate and reveal the effectiveness of the proposed two-step method.
