Transfer Matrix of Scatterers Connected in Parallel

Transport phenomena in parallel coupled scatterers are studied by transfer matrix formulism. We derive a simple recurrence relation for transfer matrix of one-dimensional two-terminal systems consisting of $N$ arbitrary scattering unit cells connected in parallel. For identical scattering sub-units we find that the effects of parallel connection on transport properties of the coupled system can be described by a similarity transformation on the single scatterer, with the similar matrix determined by the scattering matrix of the junction. While for distinct single scatterers, the similar matrices depend on both scattering properties of individual elements and structure of connection topologies.

Symmetry-Breaking Transition and Spectral Singularity in Coupled $\mathcal{PT}$-Symmetric Quantum Potentials

We study the scattering properties of $N$ identical one-dimensional localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potentials, connected in series as well as in parallel. We derive a general transfer matrix formalism for parallel coupled quantum scatterers, and apply that theory to demonstrate that the spectral singularities and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric transitions of single scattering cells may be observed in coupled systems, at the same or distinct values of the critical parameters, depending on the connection modes under which the scattering objects are coupled. We analyse the influences of the connection configuration on the related transport properties such as spectral singularities and anisotropic transmission resonances.

Periodic Orbit Families in the Gravitational Field of Irregular-shaped Bodies

The discovery of binary and triple asteroids in addition to the execution of space missions to minor celestial bodies in the past several years have focused increasing attention on periodic orbits around irregular-shaped celestial bodies. In the present work, we adopt a polyhedron shape model for providing an accurate representation of irregular-shaped bodies, and employ the model to calculate their corresponding gravitational and effective potentials. We also investigate the characteristics of periodic orbit families and the continuation of periodic orbits. We prove a fact, which provides a conserved quantity that permits restricting the number of periodic orbits in a fixed energy curved surface about an irregular-shaped body. The collisions of Floquet multipliers are maintained during the continuation of periodic orbits around the comet 1P/Halley. Multiple bifurcations in the periodic orbit families about irregular-shaped bodies are also discussed. Three bifurcations in the periodic orbit family have been found around the asteroid 216 Kleopatra, which include two real saddle bifurcations and one period-doubling bifurcation.

Model-Driven Design of Clinical Guidance Systems

Clinical guidance systems have been widely adopted to help medical staffs to avoid preventable medical errors such as delay in diagnosis, treatment or untended deviations from best practice guidelines. However, because patient condition changes rapidly and medical staffs are usually overloaded in acute care setting, how to ensure the correctness of the system reaction to those rapid changes and managing interaction with physicians remains challenging. In this paper, we propose a domain-specific model-driven design approach to address these challenges for designing clinical guidance systems. Firstly, we translate the relevant medical knowledge described in generic literature and different best practice guidelines into a set of executable and indirectly verifiable finite state machine models. We introduce an organ-centric paradigm to construct clinical models, and also develop a physician model to track physician-system interactions and deviations. Secondly, for verification of the compositional system model, we translate the model into timed automata, based on which, we formalize a set of clinical and system safety requirements as computation tree logic(CTL) formulas and use the UPPAAL model checking tool to formally verify those requirements. In this way, the correctness of the model can be mathematically proved. Finally, we can automatically generate the executable code from the verified model using the corresponding code generation tools for finite state machine. For evaluation, we apply the approach to the design of clinical guidance systems for cardiac arrest. The generated code can be deployed and interact with existing guidance systems.

Dynamical Configurations of Celestial Systems Comprised of Multiple Irregular Bodies

This manuscript considers the main features of the nonlinear dynamics of multiple irregular celestial body systems. The gravitational potential, static electric potential, and magnetic potential are considered. Based on the three established potentials, we show that three conservative values exist for this system, including a Jacobi integral. The equilibrium conditions for the system are derived and their stability analyzed. The equilibrium conditions of a celestial system comprised of n irregular bodies are reduced to 12n minus 9 equations. The dynamical results are applied to simulate the motion of multiple-asteroid systems. The simulation is useful for the study of the stability of multiple irregular celestial body systems and for the design of spacecraft orbits to triple asteroid systems discovered in the solar system. The dynamical configurations of the five triple-asteroid systems 45 Eugenia, 87 Sylvia, 93 Minerva, 216 Kleopatra, and 136617 1994CC, and the six-body system 134340 Pluto are calculated and analyzed.

A Pathophysiological Model-Driven Communication for Dynamic Distributed Medical Best Practice Guidance Systems

There is a great divide between rural and urban areas, particularly in medical emergency care. Although medical best practice guidelines exist in hospital handbooks, they are often lengthy and difficult to apply clinically. The challenges are exaggerated for doctors in rural areas and emergency medical technicians (EMT) during patient transport. In this paper, we propose the concept of distributed executable medical best practice guidance systems to assist adherence to best practice from the time that a patient first presents at a rural hospital, through diagnosis and ambulance transfer to arrival and treatment at a regional tertiary hospital center. We codify complex medical knowledge in the form of simplified distributed executable disease automata, from the thin automata at rural hospitals to the rich automata in the regional center hospitals. However, a main challenge is how to efficiently and safely synchronize distributed best practice models as the communication among medical facilities, devices, and professionals generates a large number of messages. This complex problem of patient diagnosis and transport from rural to center facility is also fraught with many uncertainties and changes resulting in a high degree of dynamism. To address this situation, we propose a pathophysiological model-driven message exchange communication architecture that ensures the real-time and dynamic requirements of synchronization among distributed emergency best-practice models are met in a reliable and safe manner. Taking the signs, symptoms, and progress of stroke patients transported across a geographically distributed healthcare network as the motivating use case, we implement our communication system and apply it to our developed best practice automata using laboratory simulations. Our proof-of-concept experiments shows there is potential for the use of our system in a wide variety of domains.

Surface Motion Relative to the Irregular Celestial Bodies

We study the motion and equilibria of the grains on the surface of the irregular celestial body (hereafter called irregular bodies). Motions for the grains on the smooth and unsmooth surfaces are discussed, respectively. The linearized equations of motion relative to a surface equilibrium point and its characteristic equations are presented. Considering the stick-slip effect, the damping forces and the spring forces for the grain are calculated, then the linearized equations of motion and the characteristic equations relative to the surface equilibrium points are derived. The number of non-degenerate surface equilibria is an even number. We compute the motion of a grain released above three different regions relative to the irregular asteroid 6489 Golevka, including the flat surface, the concave region, and the convex region. Following the grain release and initial bounce, three kinds of motions exist, the orbital motion, the impact motion and the surface motion. We find that the maximum height of the next hop may be bigger than the maximum height of the current hopping. We also used Monte Carlo simulations to calculate 100 grains hopping motions, the results shows that the stable surface equilibria are on the concave region and flat surface of the asteroid.

Invariant Clusters for Hybrid Systems

In this paper, we propose an approach to automatically compute invariant clusters for semialgebraic hybrid systems. An invariant cluster for an ordinary differential equation (ODE) is a multivariate polynomial invariant g(u,x)=0, parametric in u, which can yield an infinite number of concrete invariants by assigning different values to u so that every trajectory of the system can be overapproximated precisely by a union of concrete invariants. For semialgebraic systems, which involve ODEs with multivariate polynomial vector flow, invariant clusters can be obtained by first computing the remainder of the Lie derivative of a template multivariate polynomial w.r.t. its Groebner basis and then solving the system of polynomial equations obtained from the coefficients of the remainder. Based on invariant clusters and sum-of-squares (SOS) programming, we present a new method for the safety verification of hybrid systems. Experiments on nonlinear benchmark systems from biology and control theory show that our approach is effective and efficient.

Licensed-Assisted Access to Unlicensed Spectrum in LTE Release 13

Exploiting the unlicensed spectrum is considered by 3GPP as one promising solution to meet the ever-increasing traffic growth. As a result, one major enhancement for LTE in Release 13 has been to enable its operation in the unlicensed spectrum via Licensed-Assisted Access (LAA). In this article, we provide an overview of the Release 13 LAA technology including motivation, use cases, LTE enhancements for enabling the unlicensed band operation, and the coexistence evaluation results contributed by 3GPP participants.

Multiple Bifurcations in the Periodic Orbit around Eros

We investigate the multiple bifurcations in periodic orbit families in the potential field of a highly irregular-shaped celestial body. Topological cases of periodic orbits and four kinds of basic bifurcations in periodic orbit families are studied. Multiple bifurcations in periodic orbit families consist of four kinds of basic bifurcations. We found both binary period-doubling bifurcations and binary tangent bifurcations in periodic orbit families around asteroid 433 Eros. The periodic orbit family with binary period-doubling bifurcations is nearly circular, with almost zero inclination, and is reversed relative to the body of the asteroid 433 Eros. This implies that there are two stable regions separated by one unstable region for the motion around this asteroid. In addition, we found triple bifurcations which consist of two real saddle bifurcations and one period-doubling bifurcation. A periodic orbit family generated from an equilibrium point of asteroid 433 Eros has five bifurcations, which are one real saddle bifurcation, two tangent bifurcations, and two period-doubling bifurcations.

Capillary Action in a Crack on the Surface of Asteroids with an Application to 433 Eros

Some asteroids contain water ice, and a space mission landing on an asteroid may take liquid to the surface of the asteroid. Gas pressure is very weak on the surface of asteroids. Here we consider the capillary action in a crack on the surface of irregular asteroids. The crack is modelled as a capillary which has a fixed radius. An asteroid s irregular gravitational potential influences the height of the liquid in the capillary. The height of the liquid in the capillary on the surface of such asteroids is derived from the asteroid s irregular gravitational potential. Capillary mechanisms are expected to produce an inhomogeneaous distribution of emergent liquid on the surface. This result is applied to asteroid 433 Eros, which has an irregular, elongated, and concave shape. Two cases are considered 1) we calculate the height of the liquid in the capillary when the direction of the capillary is perpendicular to the local surface of the asteroid; 2) we calculate the height of the liquid in the capillary when the direction of the capillary is parallel to the vector from the center of mass to the surface position. The projected height in the capillary on the local surface of the asteroid seems to depend on the assumed direction of the capillary.

Periodic Motion near the Surface of Asteroids

We are interested in the periodic motion and bifurcations near the surface of an asteroid. The gravity field of an irregular asteroid and the equation of motion of a particle near the surface of an asteroid are studied. The periodic motions around the major body of triple asteroid 216 Kleopatra and the OSIRIS REx mission target asteroid 101955 Bennu are discussed. We find that motion near the surface of an irregular asteroid is quite different from the motion near the surface of a homoplastically spheroidal celestial body. The periodic motions around the asteroid 101955 Bennu and 216 Kleopatra indicate that the geometrical shapes of the orbits are probably very sophisticated. There exist both stable periodic motions and unstable periodic motions near the surface of the same irregular asteroid. This periodic motion which is unstable can be resonant or non resonant. The period doubling bifurcation and pseudo period doubling bifurcation of periodic orbits coexist in the same gravity field of the primary of the triple asteroid 216 Kleopatra. It is found that both of the period doubling bifurcations of periodic orbits and pseudo period-doubling bifurcation of periodic orbits have four different paths. The pseudo period doubling bifurcation found in the potential field of primary of triple asteroid 216 Kleopatra shows that there exist stable periodic orbits near the primary s equatorial plane, which gives an explanation for the motion stability of the triple asteroid 216 Kleopatra s two moonlets, Alexhelios and Cleoselene.

SINk: A Middleware for Synchronization of Heterogeneous Software Interfaces

Software is everywhere. The increasing requirement of supporting a wide variety of domains has rapidly increased the complexity of software systems, making them hard to maintain and the training process harder for end-users, which in turn ultimately demanded the development of user-friendly application software with simple interfaces that makes them easy, especially for non-professional personnel, to employ, and interact with. However, due to the lack of source code access for third-party software and the lack of non-graphical interfaces such as web-services or RMI (Remote Method Invocation) access to application functionality, synchronization between heterogeneous closed-box software interfaces and a user-friendly version of those interfaces has become a major challenge. In this paper, we design SINk, a middleware that enables synchronization of multiple heterogeneous software applications, using only graphical interface, without the need for source code access or access to the entire platform's control. SINk helps with synchronization of closed-box industry software, where in fact the only possible way of communication is through software interfaces. It leverages efficient client sever architecture, socket based protocol, adaptation to resolution changes, and parameter mapping mechanisms to transfer control events to ensure the real-time requirements of synchronization among multiple interfaces are met. Our proof-of-concept evaluation shows there is in fact potential usage of our middleware in a wide variety of domains.

Order and Chaos near Equilibrium Points in the Potential of Rotating Highly Irregular-shaped Celestial Bodies

The order and chaos of the motion near equilibrium points in the potential of a rotating highly irregular-shaped celestial body are investigated from point of view of the dynamical system theory. The positions of the non-degenerate equilibrium points vary continuously when the parameter changes. The topological structures in the vicinity of equilibrium points are classified into several different cases. Bifurcations at equilibrium points and the topological transfers between different cases for equilibrium points are also discussed. The conclusions can be applied to all kinds of rotating celestial bodies, simple-shaped or highly irregular-shaped, including asteroids, comets, planets and satellites of planets to help one to understand the dynamical behaviors around them. Applications to asteroids 216 Kleopatra, 2063 Bacchus, and 25143 Itokawa are significant and interesting: eigenvalues affiliated to the equilibrium points for the asteroid 216 Kleopatra move and always belong to the same topological cases; while eigenvalues affiliated to two different equilibrium points for the asteroid 2063 Bacchus and 25143 Itokawa move through the resonant cases of equilibrium points, and the collision of eigenvalues in the complex plane occurs. Poincaré sections in the potential of the asteroid 216 Kleopatra show the chaos behaviors of the orbits in large scale.

Collision and Annihilation of Relative Equilibrium Points Around Asteroids with a Changing Parameter

In this work, we investigate the bifurcations of relative equilibria in the gravitational potential of asteroids. A theorem concerning a conserved quantity, which is about the eigenvalues and number of relative equilibria, is presented and proved. The conserved quantity can restrict the number of non-degenerate equilibria in the gravitational potential of an asteroid. It is concluded that the number of non-degenerate equilibria in the gravitational field of an asteroid varies in pairs and is an odd number. In addition, the conserved quantity can also restrict the kinds of bifurcations of relative equilibria in the gravitational potential of an asteroid when the parameter varies. Furthermore, studies have shown that there exist transcritical bifurcations, quasi-transcritical bifurcations, saddle-node bifurcations, saddle-saddle bifurcations, binary saddle-node bifurcations, supercritical pitchfork bifurcations, and subcritical pitchfork bifurcations for the relative equilibria in the gravitational potential of asteroids. It is found that for the asteroid 216 Kleopatra, when the rotation period varies as a parameter, the number of relative equilibria changes from 7 to 5 to 3 to 1, and the bifurcations for the relative equilibria are saddle-node bifurcations and saddle-saddle bifurcations.

A Robust Approach for Identifying Gene-Environment Interactions for Prognosis

For many complex diseases, prognosis is of essential importance. It has been shown that, beyond the main effects of genetic (G) and environmental (E) risk factors, the gene-environment (G$\times$E) interactions also play a critical role. In practice, the prognosis outcome data can be contaminated, and most of the existing methods are not robust to data contamination. In the literature, it has been shown that even a single contaminated observation can lead to severely biased model estimation. In this study, we describe prognosis using an accelerated failure time (AFT) model. An exponential squared loss is proposed to accommodate possible data contamination. A penalization approach is adopted for regularized estimation and marker selection. The proposed method is realized using an effective coordinate descent (CD) and minorization maximization (MM) algorithm. Simulation shows that without contamination, the proposed method has performance comparable to or better than the unrobust alternative. With contamination, it outperforms the unrobust alternative and, under certain scenarios, can be superior to the robust method based on quantile regression. The proposed method is applied to the analysis of TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) lung cancer data. It identifies interactions different from those using the alternatives. The identified marker have important implications and satisfactory stability.

Analysis of the Potential Field and Equilibrium Points of Irregular-shaped Minor Celestial Bodies

The equilibrium points of the gravitational potential field of minor celestial bodies, including asteroids, comets, and irregular satellites of planets, are studied. In order to understand better the orbital dynamics of massless particles moving near celestial minor bodies and their internal structure, both internal and external equilibrium points of the potential field of the body are analyzed. In this paper, the location and stability of the equilibrium points of 23 minor celestial bodies are presented. In addition, the contour plots of the gravitational effective potential of these minor bodies are used to point out the differences between them. Furthermore, stability and topological classifications of equilibrium points are discussed, which clearly illustrate the topological structure near the equilibrium points and help to have an insight into the orbital dynamics around the irregular-shaped minor celestial bodies. The results obtained here show that there is at least one equilibrium point in the potential field of a minor celestial body, and the number of equilibrium points could be one, five, seven, and nine, which are all odd integers. It is found that for some irregular-shaped celestial bodies, there are more than four equilibrium points outside the bodies while for some others there are no external equilibrium points. If a celestial body has one equilibrium point inside the body, this one is more likely linearly stable.

Equilibrium Points and Periodic Orbits in the Vicinity of Asteroids with an Application to 216 Kleopatra

In this study, equilibrium points and periodic orbits in the potential field of asteroids are investigated. We present the linearized equations of motion relative to the equilibrium points and characteristic equations. We find that the distribution of characteristic multipliers of periodic orbits around the equilibrium point and the distribution of eigenvalues of the equilibrium point correspond to each other. The distribution of eigenvalues of the equilibrium point confirms the topology and the stability of periodic orbits around the equilibrium point.
