Polarized electroluminescence with magnetic spectral tuning in van der Waals magnet CrSBr

Polarized wavelength-tunable electroluminescence (EL) represents a critical on-demand functionality for next-generation optoelectronics. While conventional van der Waals (vdW) EL devices offer discrete wavelength switching constrained by fixed emission states, we report a novel platform enabling continuous spectral tuning combined with intrinsically polarized emission. By leveraging exciton-assisted inelastic tunneling in the anisotropic magnet CrSBr, our devices achieve uniform EL with a near unity degree of linear polarization ($\approx$ 94.3$\%$). The strong magneto-electronic coupling in CrSBr facilitates continuous magnetic-field-controlled spectral tuning through spin canting-induced band renormalization. This work establishes vdW magnets as a versatile platform for developing reconfigurable polarized light sources with simultaneous spectral and polarization control.

A composition theory for upward planar orders

An upward planar order on an acyclic directed graph $G$ is a special linear extension of the edge poset of $G$ that satisfies the nesting condition. This order was introduced to combinatorially characterize upward plane graphs and progressive plane graphs (commonly known as plane string diagrams). In this paper, motivated by the theory of graphical calculus for monoidal categories, we establish a composition theory for upward planar orders. The main result is that the composition of upward planar orders is an upward planar order. This theory provides a practical method to calculate the upward planar order of a progressive plane graph or an upward plane graph.

Reconfigurable Room Temperature Exchange Bias through Néel Order Switching in van der Waals Heterostructures

Exchange bias effect plays a crucial role in modern magnetic memory technology. Recently, van der Waals magnetic materials have emerged and shown potential in spintronic devices at atomic scale. Owing to their tunable physical properties and the flexibility in fabrication, the van der Waals heterostructures offer more possibilities for investigating potential mechanisms of the exchange bias effect. However, due to low magnetic ordering temperatures for most van der Waals magnets, to establish exchange bias in van der Waals antiferromagnet/ferromagnet heterostructures at room temperature is challenging. In this study, we fabricate (Fe$_{0.56}$Co$_{0.44}$)$_{5}$GeTe$_{2}$(FCGT)/Fe$_{3}$GaTe$_{2}$(FGaT) heterostructures with magnetic ordering temperatures of each component well above room temperature to achieve a room temperature exchange bias effect. It is found that the sign and magnitude of the exchange bias field can be efficiently controlled by manipulating the Néel order of FCGT with magnetic field. The manipulation of Néel order shows significant magnetic field dependence. A strong pre-set field induces a switch in the Néel order of FCGT, which aligns the interfacial magnetization at the FCGT/FGaT interface, leading to robust exchange bias, as revealed by both transport measurements and macro-spin model calculations. Our findings demonstrate the intrinsic manipulation and switchable of room-temperature exchange bias in all-van der Waals heterostructures and further promote the development of novel two-dimensional spintronic devices.

Spin texture and tunneling magnetoresistance in atomically thin CrSBr

The exploration of spin configurations and magnetoresistance in van der Waals magnetic semiconductors, particularly in the realm of thin-layer structures, is of paramount significance for the development of two-dimensional spintronic nanodevices. In this letter, we present detailed magneto-transport and photoluminescence studies on few-layer CrSBr flakes utilizing a vertical tunneling device configuration. Our investigations revealed complex magnetic states along the evolutionary path of few-layer CrSBr. We observed intermediate states exhibiting identical net magnetization demonstrate rectification properties, reminiscent of a diode-like behavior at positive and negative bias voltages. Notably, in devices with 5-layer CrSBr, we detected an intriguing positive magnetoresistive state when subjected to an in-plane magnetic field along the b-axis. The implementation of the Mott two-current model successfully calculated the tunneling resistance of different magnetic states, thereby elucidating the spin configurations responsible for the observed transport phenomena. These insights not only provide new perspectives on the intricate spin textures of two-dimensional CrSBr but also highlight the efficacy of tunneling measurements as a sensitive method for probing magnetic order in van der Waals materials.

Layer-dependent field-free switching of Néel vector in a van der Waals antiferromagnet

Two-dimensional antiferromagnets, combining the dual advantages of van der Waals (vdW) and antiferromagnetic materials, provide an unprecedented platform for exploring emergent spin-related phenomena. However, electrical manipulation of Néel vectors in vdW antiferromagnets - the cornerstone of antiferromagnetic spintronics - remains challenging. Here, we report layer-dependent electrical switching of the Néel vector in an A-type vdW antiferromagnet $(Fe,Co)_3$$GaTe_2$ (FCGT) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The Néel vector of FCGT with odd-number vdW layers can be 180° reversed via spin-orbit torques. Furthermore, we achieve field-free switching in an all-vdW, all-antiferromagnet heterostructure of FCGT/CrSBr in which the noncollinear interfacial spin texture breaks the mirror symmetry. Our results establish layer-controlled spin symmetries and interfacial spin engineering as universal paradigms for manipulating antiferromagnetic order, paving the way for realising reliable and efficient vdW antiferromagnetic devices.

Valley resolved dynamics of phonon bottleneck in semiconductor molybdenum ditelluride

Semiconductor molybdenum ditelluride (2H-MoTe2) possess multiple valleys in the band structure, enriching its physical properties and potentials in applications. The understanding of its multivalley nature of fundamental processes involving population and relaxation of carriers and phonons is still evolving; particularly, the possible phonon bottleneck has not yet been addressed. Here, we investigate the carrier intra- and intervalley scattering and the phonon dynamics in different valleys in photoexcited few-layer 2H-MoTe2, by using the time resolved measurements of optical absorption and electron diffraction, together with the density functional theory calculation and molecular dynamics simulation. The pathways and timescales of carrier relaxation, accompanied with the emissions of optical phonons at the Brillouin zone center and acoustic phonons at the zone border are revealed. We present a couple of approaches to estimate the population of different phonon modes based on the results of optical and electron diffraction measurements, hence quantitatively identify the occurrences of phonon bottleneck located in different valleys. Our findings make possible to construct a comprehensive picture of the complex interactions between carriers and phonons in 2H-MoTe2 with the valley degree of freedom resolved.

SUANPAN: Scalable Photonic Linear Vector Machine

Photonic linear operation is a promising approach to handle the extensive vector multiplications in artificial intelligence techniques due to the natural bosonic parallelism and high-speed information transmission of photonics. Although it is believed that maximizing the interaction of the light beams is necessary to fully utilize the parallelism and tremendous efforts have been made in past decades, the achieved dimensionality of vector-matrix multiplication is very limited due to the difficulty of scaling up a tightly interconnected or highly coupled optical system. Additionally, there is still a lack of a universal photonic computing architecture that can be readily merged with existing computing system to meet the computing power demand of AI techniques. Here, we propose a programmable and reconfigurable photonic linear vector machine to perform only the inner product of two vectors, formed by a series of independent basic computing units, while each unit is just one pair of light-emitter and photodetector. Since there is no interaction among light beams inside, extreme scalability could be achieved by simply duplicating the independent basic computing unit while there is no requirement of large-scale analog-to-digital converter and digital-to-analog converter arrays. Our architecture is inspired by the traditional Chinese Suanpan or abacus and thus is denoted as photonic SUANPAN. As a proof of principle, SUANPAN architecture is implemented with an 8*8 vertical cavity surface emission laser array and an 8*8 MoTe2 two-dimensional material photodetector array. We believe that our proposed photonic SUANPAN is capable of serving as a fundamental linear vector machine that can be readily merged with existing electronic digital computing system and is potential to enhance the computing power for future various AI applications.

Intrinsic localized excitons in MoSe$_2$/CrSBr heterostructures

We present a comprehensive investigation of optical properties in MoSe$_2$/CrSBr heterostructures, unveiling the presence of localized excitons represented by a new emission feature, X$^*$. We demonstrate through temperature- and power-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy that X$^*$ originates from excitons confined by intrinsic defects within the CrSBr layer. The valley polarization of X$^*$ and trion peaks displays opposite polarity under a magnetic field, which closely correlates with the magnetic order of CrSBr. This is attributed to spin-dependent charge transfer mechanisms across the heterointerface, supported by density functional theory calculations revealing a type-II band alignment and spin-polarized band structures. Furthermore, the strong in-plane anisotropy of CrSBr induces unique polarization-dependent responses in MoSe$_2$ emissions. Our study highlights the crucial role of defects in shaping excitonic properties. It offers valuable insights into spectral-resolved proximity effects in van der Waals heterostructures between semiconductor and magnet, contributing to advancing spintronic and valleytronic devices.

Defect-Assisted Domain Nucleation Drives Unique Exchange Bias Phenomena in $\bf{MnBi_2Te_4}$

The study of the mechanism of exchange bias phenomena and the achievement of its efficient control are of great importance, as it promotes the revelation of unique exchange interactions and the development of exotic applications. However, it is challenging due to the elusive interface between magnetic phases. In this study, we report an unprecedented exchange bias phenomenon observed in ultrathin uncompensated antiferromagnetic MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. The magnitude and direction of the exchange field can be intentionally controlled by designing a magnetic field sweep protocol without a field cooling process. The combined experimental and theoretical simulation results indicate that the spin-flip process assisted by the ubiquitous defect-induced pinning domain sites with varying inner exchange interactions might give rise to the emergence and robustness of this peculiar exchange bias. The temperature and thickness dependence of the exchange bias phenomena are systematically investigated for further study and exploitation of its unique properties. This mechanism hold promise for highly tunable exchange bias in prevalent magnetic systems by engineering the properties of domain structures, and also offers promising avenues for the design of spintronic devices combing its topology based on MnBi$_2$Te$_4$.

Solving cubic equations by completing the cube and higher degree equations by completing powers

We derive the Cardano formula of cubic equations by completing the cube, and provide radical solutions to some algebraic equations of higher degree by completing powers. The main idea of completing powers arises from Harrison's center theory of higher degree forms. A very simple criterion for such algebraic equations is presented, and the computation amounts to solving linear equations and quadratic equations.

Using a variety of methods developed in the theory of finite-dimensional quasi-Hopf algebras, we classify all finite-dimensional coradically graded pointed coquasi-Hopf algebras over abelian groups. As a consequence, we partially confirm the generation conjecture of pointed finite tensor categories due to Etingof, Gelaki, Nikshych and Ostrik.

Quasi-diagrams and gentle algebras

Any gentle algebra $A$ with one maximal path corresponds to a unique quasi-diagram $α$. We introduce the regularity for $α$, and show that $A$ has finite global dimension if and only if $α$ is regular. We characterize regular quasi-diagrams which remain regular under the dihedral group action. We prove that the set of maximal chord diagrams is the "biggest" one among the sets closed under taking Koszul dual and rotations.

A note on the Hurwitz problem and cone spherical metrics

We are motivated by cone spherical metrics on compact Riemann surfaces of positive genus to solve a special case of the Hurwitz problem. Precisely speaking, letting $d,\,g$ and $\ell$ be three positive integers and $Λ$ be the following collection of $(\ell+2)$ partitions of a positive integer $d$: \[(a_1,\cdots, a_p),\,(b_1,\cdots, b_q),\,(m_1+1,1,\cdots,1),\cdots, (m_{\ell}+1,1,\cdots,1),\] where $(m_1,\cdots, m_{\ell})$ is a partition of $p+q-2+2g$, we prove that there exists a branched cover from some compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ to the Riemann sphere ${\Bbb P}^1$ with branch data $Λ$. An analogue for the genus-zero case was found by the first two authors ({\it Algebra Colloq.} {\bf 27} (2020), no. 2, 231-246), who were stimulated by such metrics on ${\Bbb P}^1$ and conjectured the veracity of the above statement there.

Constructing the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in antiferromagnetic insulator CrOCl

Time reversal symmetry breaking in superconductors, resulting from external magnetic fields or spontaneous magnetization, often leads to unconventional superconducting properties. In this way, a conventional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, characterized by the Cooper pairs with nonzero total momentum, may be realized by the Zeeman effect caused from external magnetic fields. Here, we report the observation of superconductivity in a few-layer antiferromagnetic insulator CrOCl by utilizing superconducting proximity effect with NbSe2 flakes. The superconductivity demonstrates a considerably weak gap of about 0.12 meV and the in-plane upper critical field reveals as behavior of the FFLO state at low temperature. Our first-principles calculations indicate that the proximitized superconductivity may exist in the CrOCl layer with Cr vacancies or line-defects. Moreover, the FFLO state could be induced by the inherent larger spin splitting in the CrOCl layer. Our findings not only demonstrate the fascinating interaction between superconductivity and magnetism, but also provide a possible path to construct FFLO state by intrinsic time reversal symmetry breaking and superconducting proximity effect.

A Hierarchy-based Analysis Approach for Blended Learning: A Case Study with Chinese Students

Blended learning is generally defined as the combination of traditional face-to-face learning and online learning. This learning mode has been widely used in advanced education across the globe due to the COVID-19 pandemic's social distance restriction as well as the development of technology. Online learning plays an important role in blended learning, and as it requires more student autonomy, the quality of blended learning in advanced education has been a persistent concern. Existing literature offers several elements and frameworks regarding evaluating the quality of blended learning. However, most of them either have different favours for evaluation perspectives or simply offer general guidance for evaluation, reducing the completeness, objectivity and practicalness of related works. In order to carry out a more intuitive and comprehensive evaluation framework, this paper proposes a hierarchy-based analysis approach. Applying gradient boosting model and feature importance evaluation method, this approach mainly analyses student engagement and its three identified dimensions (behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, cognitive engagement) to eliminate some existing stubborn problems when it comes to blended learning evaluation. The results show that cognitive engagement and emotional engagement play a more important role in blended learning evaluation, implying that these two should be considered to improve for better learning as well as teaching quality.

ReCo: A Dataset for Residential Community Layout Planning

Layout planning is centrally important in the field of architecture and urban design. Among the various basic units carrying urban functions, residential community plays a vital part for supporting human life. Therefore, the layout planning of residential community has always been of concern, and has attracted particular attention since the advent of deep learning that facilitates the automated layout generation and spatial pattern recognition. However, the research circles generally suffer from the insufficiency of residential community layout benchmark or high-quality datasets, which hampers the future exploration of data-driven methods for residential community layout planning. The lack of datasets is largely due to the difficulties of large-scale real-world residential data acquisition and long-term expert screening. In order to address the issues and advance a benchmark dataset for various intelligent spatial design and analysis applications in the development of smart city, we introduce Residential Community Layout Planning (ReCo) Dataset, which is the first and largest open-source vector dataset related to real-world community to date. ReCo Dataset is presented in multiple data formats with 37,646 residential community layout plans, covering 598,728 residential buildings with height information. ReCo can be conveniently adapted for residential community layout related urban design tasks, e.g., generative layout design, morphological pattern recognition and spatial evaluation. To validate the utility of ReCo in automated residential community layout planning, two Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) based generative models are further applied to the dataset. We expect ReCo Dataset to inspire more creative and practical work in intelligent design and beyond. The ReCo Dataset is published at: https://www.kaggle.com/fdudsde/reco-dataset.
