Search for a generic heavy Higgs at the LHC

A generic heavy Higgs has both dim-4 and effective dim-6 interactions with the Standard Model (SM) particles. The former has been the focus of LHC searches in all major Higgs production channels, just as the SM one, but with negative results so far. If the heavy Higgs is connected with Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics at a few TeV scale, its dim-6 operators will play a very important role - they significantly enhance the Higgs momentum, and reduce the SM background in a special phase space corner to a level such that a heavy Higgs emerges, which is not possible with dim-4 operators only. We focus on the associated VH production channel, where the effect of dim-6 operators is the largest and the SM background is the lowest. Main search regions for this type of signal are identified, and substructure variables of boosted jets are employed to enhance the signal from backgrounds. The parameter space of these operators are scanned over, and expected exclusion regions with 300 fb$^{-1}$ and 3 ab$^{-1}$ LHC data are shown, if no BSM is present. The strategy given in this paper will shed light on a heavy Higgs which may be otherwise hiding in the present and future LHC data.

Further Investigation on Model-Independent Probe of Heavy Neutral Higgs Bosons at the LHC Run 2

In our previous paper, we provided general effective Higgs interactions for the lightest Higgs boson $h$ (SM-like) and a heavier neutral Higgs boson $H$ based on the effective Lagrangian formulation up to the dim-6 interactions, and then proposed two sensitive processes for probing $H$. We showed in several examples that the resonance peak of $H$ and its dim-6 effective coupling constants (ECC) can be detected at the LHC Run 2 with reasonable integrated luminosity. In this paper, we further perform a more thorough study of the most sensitive process, $pp\to VH^\ast\to VVV$, on the information about the relations between the $1σ,\,3σ,\,5σ$ statistical significance and the corresponding ranges of the Higgs ECC for an integrated luminosity of 100 fb$^{-1}$. These results have two useful applications in the LHC Run 2: (A) realizing the experimental determination of the ECC in the dim-6 interactions if $H$ is found and, (B) obtaining the theoretical exclusion bounds if $H$ is not found. Some alternative processes sensitive for certain ranges of the ECC are also analyzed.

Probing gauge-phobic heavy Higgs bosons at high energy hadron colliders

We study the probe of the gauge-phobic (or nearly gauge-phobic) heavy Higgs bosons (GPHB) at high energy hadron colliders including the 14 TeV LHC and the 50 TeV Super Proton-Proton Collider (SppC). We take the process $pp\to t\bar t t\bar t$, and study it at the hadron level including simulating the jet formation and top quark tagging (with jet substructure). We show that, for a GPHB with $M^{}_H<800$ GeV, $M^{}_H$ can be determined by adjusting the value of $M^{}_H$ in the theoretical $p^{}_T(b_1)$ distribution to fit the observed $p^{}_T(b_1)$ distribution, and the resonance peak can be seen at the SppC for $M^{}_H$=800 GeV and 1 TeV.

Model-independent Probe of anomalous heavy neutral Higgs bosons at the LHC

We first formulate, in the framework of effective Lagrangian, the general form of the effective interactions of the lightest Higgs boson h and a heavier neutral Higgs boson H in a multi-Higgs system taking account of Higgs mixing effect. We regard h as the discovered Higgs boson which has been shown to be consistent with the standard model (SM) Higgs boson. The obtained effective interactions contain extra parameters reflecting the Higgs mixing effect. Next, We study the constraints on the anomalous coupling constants of H from both the requirement of the unitarity of the S matrix and the exclusion bounds on the SM Higgs boson obtained from the experimental data at the 7--8 TeV LHC. From this we obtain the available range of the anomalous coupling constants of H, with which H is not excluded by the yet known theoretical and experimental constraints. We then study the signatures of H at the 14 TeV LHC. In this paper, we suggest taking weak-boson scattering and pp to VH* to VVV as sensitive processes for probing H model independently at the 14 TeV LHC. We take several examples with the anomalous HVV coupling constants in the available ranges to do the numerical study. a full tree-level calculation at the hadron level is given with signals and backgrounds carefully calculated. We impose a series of proper kinematic cuts to effectively suppress the backgrounds. It is shown that, in both the VV scattering and the pp to VH* to VVV processes, H boson can be discovered from the invariant mass distributions of the final state particles with reasonable integrated luminosity. Especially, in the pp to VH* to VVV process, the invariant mass distribution of the final state jets can show a clear resonance peak of H. Finally, we propose several physical observables from which the values of the anomalous coupling constants f_W and f_{WW} can be measured experimentally.

Probing anomalous heavy neutral Higgs bosons at the LHC II: LHC signatures

In this manuscript, we study the LHC signatures of a non-standard heavy neutral Higgs boson H at the 14 TeV LHC model-independently by taking the anomalous HVV coupling constants in the possible range obtained in our previous paper, Ref.[1]. We suggest WW scattering and VH associated production as two sensitive processes for detecting H, and the latter is more sensitive than the former. The study is at the hadron level with signals and backgrounds carefully calculated. Certain kinematic cuts are proposed to suppress the backgrounds effectively. We take several values of the heavy Higgs masses in the few hundred GeV range as examples. We show that, in VH associated production, the invariant mass distribution M(J_1,J_2) of the final state jets can show a clear peak at M(J_1,J_2)=M_H with reasonable integrated luminosity. Finally, we propose several detectable observables from which the values of the anomalous coupling constants f_W and f_WW can be measured experimentally.

Vector Bosons Signals of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

We study the physics potential of the 8 TeV LHC to discover signals of extended gauge models or extra dimensional models whose low energy behavior is well represented by an SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) electroweak gauge structure. We find that with a combined integrated luminosity of 40 fb^(-1), the first new Kaluza-Klein mode of the W gauge boson can be discovered up to a mass of about 400 GeV, when produced in association with a Z boson.

Discovering New Gauge Bosons of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking at LHC-8

We study the physics potential of the 8TeV LHC (LHC-8) to discover, during its 2012 run, a large class of extended gauge models or extra dimensional models whose low energy behavior is well represented by an SU(2)^2 x U(1) gauge structure. We analyze this class of models and find that with a combined integrated luminosity of 40-60/fb at the LHC-8, the first new Kaluza-Klein mode of the W gauge boson can be discovered up to a mass of about 370-400 GeV, when produced in association with a Z boson.

Testing Anomalous Color-Electric Dipole Moment of the c-Quark from psi'->J/psi+pi(+)+pi(-) at Beijing Spectrometer

If the c-quark has an anomalous color-electric dipole moment (CEDM), it may serve as a new source of CP violation. The strength of such a CP violation depends on the size of the CEDM, d'_c. We propose two effective ways of testing it from the large sample of psi'->J/psi+pi(+)+pi(-) at the Beijing Spectrometer, and the obtained result, |d'_c|<3X10^{-14} e cm (95% C.L.), gives the first experimentally determined upper bound on the CEDM of the c quark.

Anomalous gauge couplings of the Higgs boson at the LHC II: Study of additional backgrounds in semileptonic mode of WW scatterings

Searching for the Higgs boson is of first priority in LHC experiments. Once a Higgs candidate is found, we then need to know whether it is the standard model (SM) Higgs boson or a Higgs boson in new physics beyond the SM. So far we do not know what model of new physics will actually reflect the property of the nature. A model-independent way of measuring the anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson will provide a no-lose study, i.e., if we find nonvanishing anomalous couplings (deviation from the SM couplings), we can conclude that it is a new physics effect. In a previous paper \cite{QKLZ09}, we gave a hadron level study of a model-independent test of the anomalous gauge couplings of the Higgs boson at the 14 TeV LHC via the semileptonic mode of weak-boson scatterings $pp\to W^+W^\pm j^f_1 j^f_2\to l^+ν^{}_lj^{}_1j^{}_2j^f_1j^f_2$, and the conclusion is that, with certain kinematical cuts imposed, the measurement can start for an integrated luminosity of 50 fb$^{-1}$. For higher integrated luminosity, say 100 fb$^{-1}$, the two main anomalous coupling constants $f^{}_{WW}/Λ^2$ and $f^{}_W/Λ^2$ can be determined separately which may provide a clue for figuring out the underlying theory of new physics.

Anomalous gauge couplings of the Higgs boson at the CERN LHC: Semileptonic mode in WW scatterings

We make a full tree level study of the signatures of anomalous gauge couplings of the Higgs boson at the CERN LHC via the semileptonic decay mode in WW scatterings. Both signals and backgrounds are studied at the hadron level for the Higgs mass in the range 115 GeV to 200 GeV. We carefully impose suitable kinematical cuts for suppressing the backgrounds. To the same sensitivity as in the pure leptonic mode, our result shows that the semileptonic mode can reduce the required integrated luminosity by a factor of 3. If the anomalous couplings in nature are actually larger than the sensitivity bounds shown in the text, the experiment can start the test for an integrated luminosity of 50 inverse fb.

LHC Signatures of New Gauge Bosons in the Minimal Higgsless Model

We study the LHC signatures of new gauge bosons in the gauge-invariant minimal Higgsless model. It predicts an extra pair of W_1 and Z_1 bosons which can be as light as ~400GeV and play a key role in the delay of unitarity violation. We analyze the W_1 signals in pp --> W_0Z_0Z_0 --> jj4\ell and pp --> jj W_0Z_0 --> jj3\ellνprocesses at the LHC, including the complete electroweak and QCD backgrounds. We reveal the complementarity between these two channels for discovering the W_1 boson, and demonstrate the LHC discovery potential over the full range of allowed W_1 mass.

Anomalous gauge couplings of the Higgs boson at high energy photon colliders

We study the sensitivity of testing the anomalous gauge couplings $g_{HVV}$'s of the Higgs boson in the formulation of linearly realized gauge symmetry via the processes $γγ\to ZZ$ and $γγ\to WWWW$ at polarized and unpolarized photon colliders based on $e^+e^-$ linear colliders of c.m.~energies 500 GeV, 1 TeV, and 3 TeV. Signals beyond the standard model (SM) and SM backgrounds are carefully studied. We propose certain kinematic cuts to suppress the standard model backgrounds. For an integrated luminosity of 1 ab$^{-1}$, we show that (a) $γγ\to ZZ$ can provide a test of $g_{Hγγ}$ to the $3σ$ sensitivity of $O(10^{-3}-10^{-2})$ TeV$^{-1}$ at a 500 GeV ILC, and $O(10^{-3})$ TeV$^{-1}$ at a 1 TeV ILC and a 3 TeV CLIC, and (b) $γγ\to WWWW$ at a 3 TeV CLIC can test all the anomalous couplings $g_{HVV}$'s to the $3σ$ sensitivity of $O(10^{-3}-10^{-2})$ TeV$^{-1}$.

Distinguishing technicolor models via tt-bar productions at polarized photon colliders

We study top quark pair productions at a polarized photon collider from an e(+)e(-) linear collider (LC) in various improved technicolor model, namely, the one-family walking technicolor model, the top-color-assisted technicolor model, and the top-color-assisted multiscale technicolor model. Recent constraint on the top-pion mass from the precision data of R(b) is considered. It is shown that, considering only the statistical errors, a polarized photon collider from a 500 GeV LC with an integrated luminosity of 500 inverse fb is sufficient for distinguishing the three improved technicolor models experimentally.

Testing anomalous gauge couplings of the Higgs boson via weak-boson scatterings at the LHC

We propose a sensitive way to test the anomalous HVV couplings (V=W(+/-),Z(0)) of the Higgs boson (H), which can arise from either the dimension-3 effective operator in a nonlinearly realized Higgs sector or the dimension-6 effective operators in a linearly realized Higgs sector, via studying the VV scattering processes at the CERN LHC. The gold-plated pure leptonic decay modes of the final state weak bosons in the processes pp->VVjj are studied. For comparison, we also analyze the constraints from the precision electroweak data, the expected precision of the measurements of the Higgs boson production rate, decay width and branching ratios at the Tevatron run-2 and the CERN LHC, and the requirement of unitarity of the S-matrix. We show that, with an integrated luminosity of 300 inverse fb and sufficient kinematical cuts for suppressing the backgrounds, studying the process pp->w(+)+W(+)+j+j->l(+)+nu+l(+)+nu+j+j can probe the anomalous HWW couplings at a few tens of percent level for the nonlinearly realized Higgs sector, and at the level of 0.01-0.08 inverse TeV for the linearly realized effective Lagrangian.

Anomalous Gauge Interactions of the Higgs Boson: Precision Constraints and Weak Boson Scatterings

Interaction of Higgs scalar (H) with weak gauge bosons (V=W,Z) is the {\it key} to understand electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) mechanism. New physics effects in the HVV interactions, as predicted by models of compositeness, supersymmetry and extra dimensions, can be formulated as anomalous couplings via a generic effective Lagrangian. We first show that the existing electroweak precision data already impose nontrivial indirect constraints on the anomalous HVV couplings. Then, we systematically study VV --> VV scatterings in the TeV region, via Gold-plated pure leptonic decay modes of the weak bosons. We demonstrate that, even for a light Higgs boson in the mass range 115GeV < m_H < 300GeV, this process can directly probe the anomalous HVV interactions at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 300fb^{-1}, which further supports the ``No-Lose'' theorem for the LHC to uncover the EWSB mechanism. Comparisons with the constraints from measuring the cross section of VH associate production and the Higgs boson decay width are also given.

On QCD Predictions for the Chiral Lagrangian Coefficients

Based on a previous study of deriving the chiral Lagrangian (CL) from QCD, we illustrate the main feature of QCD predictions for the CL coefficients (CLC) in certain approximations. We first show that, in the large-N(c) limit, the anomaly part contributions to the CLC are exactly cancelled by certain terms in the normal part contributions (NPC), so that the final results only concern the remaining NPC depending on QCD interactions. We then do the calculation in a simple approach with further approximations. The obtained CLC and quark condensate are consistent with the experiments.
