Calculation of the Chiral Lagrangian Coefficients from the Underlying Theory of QCD: A Simple Approach

We calculate the coefficients in the chiral Lagrangian approximately from QCD based on a previous study of deriving the chiral Lagrangian from the first principles of QCD in which the chiral Lagrangian coefficients are defined in terms of certain Green's functions in QCD. We first show that, in the large N(c)-limit, the anomaly part contributions to the coefficients are exactly cancelled by certain terms in the normal part contributions, and the final results of the coefficients only concern the remaining normal part contributions depending on QCD interactions. We then do the calculation in a simple approach with the approximations of taking the large-N(c) limit, the leading order in dynamical perturbation theory, and the improved ladder approximation, thereby the relevant Green's functions are expressed in terms of the quark self energy. By solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the quark self energy, we obtain the approximate QCD predicted coefficients and the quark condensate which are consistent with the experimental values.

S-D Mixing and Searching for the psi(1P1) State at the Beijing Electron-Positron Coolider

The psi(1P1) state can be produced at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPC) in the process psi'-->psi(1P1)+pi(0). We calculate the rate of this process taking account of the S-D mixing effect in psi'. It is shown that the rate is about a factor of 3 smaller than the simple result without considering the S-D mixing effect. Possible detecting channels are suggested and it is shown that psi(1P1) is able to be found with the accumulation of 30 million events of psi' at BEPC.

Probing the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Mechanism at High Energy Colliders

We briefly review the recent developments of probing the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism at high energy colliders such as the CERN LEP2, the Fermilab Tevatron, the CERN LHC and the e(+)e(-) linear colliders. Both weakly interacting and strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking mechanisms are concerned.

Reexamination of the Constraint on Topcolor-Assisted Technicolor Models from R_b

Recent study on the charged top-pion correction to R_b shows that it is negative and large, so that the precision experimental value of R_b gives rise to a severe constraint on the topcolor-assisted technicolor models such that the top-pion mass should be of the order of 1 TeV. In this paper, we restudy this constraint by further taking account the extended technicolor gauge boson correction which is positive. With this positive contribution to R_b, the constraint on the topcolor-assisted technicolor models from R_b changes significantly. The top-pion mass is allowed to be in the region of a few hundred GeV depending on the models.

Associated production of Higgs bosons and heavy quarks at photon colliders

The idea of fermion mass generation through Yukawa couplings between Higgs bosons and fermions may be tested by their associated production at future linear colliders (LC). We study the production mechanism in the minimal supersymmeric standard model at photon colliders that can be realized by the laser back-scattering technique at the LC. We find that the cross sections for the production of the light Higgs-top pair, heavy Higgs-bottom pair and pseudoscalr Higgs-bottom pair can reach the level of \sim 1.0 fb or higher for phenomenologically favoured values of the parameters in the Higgs sector. Since this mechanism is not affected by the appearance of Higgs resonances as in electron collisions, it may provide a more sensitive way to determine the Yukawa couplings between Higgs bosons and heavy quarks.

Pseudo-Goldstone Boson Effects in Top-Antitop Productions at High Energy Hadron Colliders and Testing Technicolor Models

We study the top quark pair production process p+p(anti-p)-->top+antitop in various kinds of technicolor (TC) models at the Fermilab Tevatron Run II and the CERN LHC. The s-channel neutral pseudo-Goldstone bosons (PGB's) contribute dominately to the production amplitudes from its coupling to the gluons through the triangle loops of techniquarks and the top quark. Cross sections in different TC models with s-channel PGB contributions are calculated. It is shown that the PGB effects can be experimentally tested and different TC models under consideration can be distinguished at the LHC. Therefore, the p+p-->top+antitop process at the LHC provides feasible tests of the TC models.

Derivation of the Effective Chiral Lagrangian for Pseudoscalar Mesons from QCD

We formally derive the chiral Lagrangian for low lying pseudoscalar mesons from the first principles of QCD considering the contributions from the normal part of the theory without taking approximations. The derivation is based on the standard generating functional of QCD in the path integral formalism. The gluon-field integration is formally carried out by expressing the result in terms of physical Green's functions of the gluon. To integrate over the quark-field, we introduce a bilocal auxiliary field Phi(x,y) representing the mesons. We then develop a consistent way of extracting the local pseudoscalar degree of freedom U(x) in Phi(x,y) and integrating out the rest degrees of freedom such that the complete pseudoscalar degree of freedom resides in U(x). With certain techniques, we work out the explicit U(x)-dependence of the effective action up to the p^4-terms in the momentum expansion, which leads to the desired chiral Lagrangian in which all the coefficients contributed from the normal part of the theory are expressed in terms of certain Green's functions in QCD. Together with the existing QCD formulae for the anomaly contributions, the present results leads to the complete QCD definition of the coefficients in the chiral Lagrangian. The relation between the present QCD definition of the p^2-order coefficient F_0^2 and the well-known approximate result given by Pagels and Stokar is discussed.

Derivation of the Gasser-Leutwyler Lagrangian from QCD

The normal part of the Gasser-Leutwyler formulation of the chiral Lagrangian is formally derived from the first principles of QCD without taking approximations. All the coefficients are expressed in terms of certain Green's functions in QCD, which can be regarded as the general QCD definitions of the normal part of the coefficients. The approximate values of the coefficients are also presented.

Single top Quark Production in e-gamma Collisions and Testing Technicolor Models

We study the single top quark production process in various kinds of technicolor models in high energy positron photon collisions at the future electron positron linear colliders. It is shown that if there is certain charged pseudo Goldstone boson (PGB) coupling to t(anti-b), the t(anti-b)-channel PGB contribution is dominant, but the situation is quite different from that in the neutral channel, t(anti-t) production in photon photon collisions, due to the destructive nature of different amplitudes. At the DESY limear collider TESLA, the event rates in models with t(anti-b)-channel PGB contributions, such as the top-color-assisted technicolor model, etc. are experimentally measurable. This process provides a feasible test of technicolor models with t(abti-b)-channel PGB contributions.

Testing Technicolor Models via Top Quark Pair Production in High Energy Photon Collisions

Pseudo-Goldstone boson contributions to $t\bar{t}$ production rates in technicolor models with and without topcolor at the $\sqrt{s}=0.5 and 1.5$ TeV photon colliders and hadron colliders are reviewed. For reasonable ranges of the parameters, the contributions are large enough to be experimentally observable. Models with topcolor, without topcolor and the MSSM with $\tanβ\geq 1$ can be experimentally distinguished.

Ward-Takahashi Identity and Dynamical Mass Generation in Abelian Gauge Theories

We derive Ward-Takahashi identities including composite fields in Abelian gauge theories and the matching condition between the elementary field description and the composite field description. With these we develop an approach to dynamical symmetry breaking in Abelian gauge theories including the study of the dynamically generated masses of the gauge boson, the fermions and the composite Higgs field. The Cornwall-Norton, Jackiw-Johnson and Schwinger models are taken as examples of the application. The obtained gauge boson masses are in agreement with the existing results. In this appraoch, we are able to further obtain new results for the mass of the composite Higgs boson and the goldstone boson decay constant.

Testing Technicolor Models in Top Quark Pair Production at High Energy Photon Colliders

We study pseudo-Goldstone boson corrections to top quark pair production rates in technicolor models with and without topcolor at the E=0.5 teV and 1.5 TeV photon colliders. We find that, for reasonable ranges of the parameters, the corrections are large enough to be observable, and the corrections in models with topcolor are considerably larger than those in models without topcolor, and they are all significantly larger than the corresponding corrections in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with tan(beta) of the order of 1. So that the two kinds of technicolor models and the MSSM with tan(beta) of the order of 1 can be experimentally distinguished.

Nonperturbative Explanation of the Enhancement Factors in QCD Sum Rule for the rho Meson

Taking the sum rule for the rho meson as an example, we study the possibility of explaining the phenomenological enhamcement factors for certain terms in the vacuum expectation value of the operator product expansion in the QCD sum rule. We take a QCD motivated extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (ENJL) model as the low energy effective Lagrangian for QCD with which we calculate the nonperturbative contributions to the vacuum condensate expansion to obtain the enhancement factors. Our result shows that such nonperturbative contributions can cause large enough enhancement factors which can be consistent with the phenomenological values.

t anti-t Production Rates at the Tevatron and the LHC in Topcolor- Assisted Multiscale Technicolor Models

We study the contributions of the neutral pseudo Goldstone bosons (technipions and top-pions) to the t anti-t production cross sections at the Tevatron and the LHC in topcolor-assisted multiscale technicolor (TOPCMTC) models via the gluon-gluon fusion process from the loop-level couplings between the pseudo Goldstone bosons and the gluons. The MRS set A' parton distributions are used in the calculation. It is shown that the new CDF datum on the t anti-t production cross section gives constraints on the parameters in the TOPCMTC models. With reasonable values of the parameters in TOPCMTC models, the cross section at the Tevatron is larger than that predicted by the standard model, and is consistent with the new CDF data. The enhancement of the cross section and the resonance peaks at the LHC are more significant, so that it is testable in future experiments.

Supersymmetric QCD Corrections to Top Quark Pair Production in Photon-Photon Collision

Supersymmetric QCD corrections to top quark pair production by photon fusion are calculated in the minimal supersymmetric standard model taking into account of the effects of stops in the corrections to the total cross-section of t anti-t production at the future electron-positron linear collider. We find that the relative correction can be a few percent for reasonable values of the parameters.
