EdgeFaaS: A Function-based Framework for Edge Computing

Edge computing brings unique challenges as the resources on the edge are highly diverse in capabilities and capacities, and highly distributed across many users and the physical world. Existing distributed computing frameworks cannot adequately handle this level of heterogeneity and distribution. This paper proposes EdgeFaaS, a novel function-based edge computing framework to enable edge applications to effectively utilize heterogeneous resources distributed across the Internet of Things (IoT), edge, and cloud for computing. It proposes function virtualization and storage virtualization to abstract distributed and heterogeneous physical resources and provides consistent virtual interfaces for deploying and executing functions and storing and accessing data. EdgeFaaS provides comprehensive support to diverse edge computing workflows, and at the same time allows users to flexibly adjust the configurations and explore various important tradeoffs. To demonstrate its usability, the paper also presents the implementation and evaluation of three representative workflows on EdgeFaaS for video analytics, federated learning, and audio classification, on a real testbed of 100+ geographically distributed IoT devices, edge servers, and cloud services. EdgeFaaS allows users to flexibly explore the deployment configurations of these workflows over distributed and heterogeneous resources. For example, users can easily vary the function placement of the video processing pipeline across IoT, edge, and cloud resources and study the tradeoff between computation and communication costs; users can also flexibly adjust the cluster count and size in the hierarchical federated learning system and explore the tradeoff between training accuracy and speed.

Evaluation of U-235 and U-238 Fission Product Yields Using Bayesian Neural Networks: Comparison of Baseline and Physics-Informed Models

U-235 and U-238 are fundamental materials in thermal and fast neutron breeding studies. Accurate evaluation of their fission product yields is of critical importance for advanced reactor design and nuclear waste management. In this work, a baseline Bayesian neural network model (BNN0) with two hidden layers of 20 neurons each was constructed. An improved model, BNN3, was developed by incorporating additional physics-informed features, namely the odd-even effect, beta-decay energy, and isospin, into the network inputs. Comparative analyses of the general distributions of the fission yields and isotopic chain structures demonstrate that BNN3 exhibits significantly improved reconstruction accuracy and consistency with the target cumulative fission-yield distributions. For 16 representative fission products, the energy-dependent yield predictions of BNN3 show better agreement with both experimental data and evaluated libraries, accompanied by noticeably narrower confidence intervals. These results indicate that the incorporation of relevant physical information improves the model's sensitivity to underlying fission mechanisms and enhances its capability to reproduce the systematic characteristics of cumulative fission-yield distributions. Together, these strategies contribute to more accurate and robust nuclear data modeling, providing a methodological foundation for the evaluation and development of next-generation nuclear data libraries.

Exploring the relationship between human-centric AI and firm idiosyncratic risks

Despite the extensive discussions of human-centric AI (HCAI) in Industry 5.0, its effects on firms' idiosyncratic risks (IR) remains underexplored. This is an imperative issue for firms navigate financial risks during the current technological revolution, as IR reflects investor reactions to corporate heterogeneous AI strategies and implementations by isolating firm-level stock volatility from systematic factors. Integrating situated AI theory with social-technical systems theory, we conceptualise HCAI as a situated AI strategy that reduces AI-related ethical risks and fosters AI-Human synergies in firms' business operations, ultimately reducing IR by aligning with stakeholders' diverse expectations. Moreover, socio-technical factors, namely digitalisation, operational efficiency, executive shareholding, and CEOs with IT background, may moderate the HCAI-IR relationship. Using a multi-source panel dataset of Chinese listed firms from 2015 to 2023, we find that HCAI is associated with lower firm IR. Furthermore, digitalisation and executive shareholding strengthen this risk-reducing effect, whereas operational efficiency and CEOs with IT background surprisingly attenuate it. Our findings offer theoretical contributions and practical insights for both ethical AI governance and firm financial risk management in the AI era.

Topological Tunneling Magnetoresistance Driven by Type-II Weyl-Like States in the Room-Temperature Half-Metal Mn2PC Monolayer

We predict the tetragonal Mn2PC monolayer to be a room-temperature ferromagnetic half-metal with a Curie temperature of 554 K. The spin-up channel hosts type-II Weyl-like crossings at the Fermi level with highly anisotropic band dispersion, whereas the spin-down channel is a wide-gap semiconductor. Topological edge states obtained from tight-binding calculations confirm the non-trivial bulk topology. Spin-orbit coupling opens a small gap of 11.2 meV at the Weyl-like crossings, generating pronounced Berry curvature and a sizable anomalous Hall conductivity near the Fermi level. Based on these properties, we propose topological tunneling magnetoresistance in a Mn2PC-based magnetic tunnel junction: the parallel configuration conducts through fully spin-polarized Weyl-like carriers, while the antiparallel configuration is suppressed by the half-metallic gap, yielding a giant magnetoresistance ratio. The concurrent anomalous Hall effect in the conducting state provides an experimentally accessible signature of the topological carriers. These results identify the Mn2PC monolayer as a promising platform for room-temperature topological spintronic devices.

Variations in the Milky Way's Stellar Mass Function at [Fe/H] < -1

We present the first determination of the Galactic stellar mass function (MF) for low-mass stars (0.2-0.5 M_sun) at metallicities [Fe/H] < -1. A sample of ~53,000 stars was selected as metal-poor on the basis of both their halo-like orbits and their spectroscopic [Fe/H] from Gaia DR3 BP/RP (XP) spectra. These metallicity estimates for low-mass stars were enabled by calibrating Gaia XP spectra with stellar parameters from SDSS-V. For -1.5 < [Fe/H] < -1, we find that the MF below 0.5 M_sun exhibits a "bottom-heavy" power-law slope of alpha ~ -1.6. We tentatively find that at even lower metallicities, the MF becomes very bottom-light, with a near-flat power-law slope of alpha ~ 0 that implies a severe deficit of low-mass stars. This metallicity-dependent variation is insensitive to the adopted stellar evolution model. These results show that the Galactic low-mass MF is not universal, with variations in the metal-poor regime. A further calibration of XP metallicities in the regime of M < 0.5 M_sun and [Fe/H] < -1.5 will be essential to verify these tentative low-metallicity trends.

Stellar initial mass function in the 100-pc solar neighbourhood

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is among the most fundamental distributions in astrophysics, defined as the mass spectrum of stars produced in a single star-formation event. Even in the solar neighbourhood, where measurements can be conducted via star counting, disentangling the IMF from observational effects remains challenging. In this work we introduce a new parametrisation of the stellar IMF in the 100-pc solar neighbourhood, leveraging the high-precision astrometric and photometric data from \textsl{Gaia} DR3: we model the colour-magnitude diagram of the field star population while accounting for observational uncertainties, Malmquist bias, Lutz-Kelker bias, variations in the mass-luminosity relation arising from metallicity differences, and the effects of unresolved binaries. In particular, we synthesise the binary population with a process imitating the dynamical evolution observed in star clusters to enforce that all components are drawn from the same IMF, while simultaneously recovering the observed present-day mass-ratio distribution. We determine an averaged stellar IMF over $0.25<m<1.0~M_{\odot}$ that aligns with canonical IMFs but achieves significantly tighter constraints: $\alpha_1=0.75^{+0.06}_{-0.04}$, $\alpha_2=2.07^{+0.04}_{-0.03}$, and a break point at $m_{\mathrm{break}}=0.40^{+0.01}_{-0.01}$ $\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$. Our inference also yields an averaged binary fraction over $0.25<m<1.0~M_{\odot}$ of approximately 26\%, and constrains the \textsl{Gaia} DR3 angular resolution to $1.11^{+0.11}_{-0.08}$ arcsec. We also provide the $\xi$-parameter for our IMF, which is $0.5070_{-0.0096}^{+0.0068}$, to facilitate direct comparison with other IMF determinations.

Distance estimation of the high-velocity cloud Anti-Center Shell

High-velocity clouds (HVCs) are interstellar gas clouds whose velocities are incompatible with Galactic rotation. Since the first discovery of HVCs in 1963, their origins have been debated for decades but are still not settled down, because of the lack of vital parameters of HVCs, e.g., the distance. In this work, we determined the distance to the high-velocity cloud, namely the Anti-Center Shell (ACS). We trace the ACS with extinction derived from K-giant stars with known distances and with the diffuse interstellar band (DIB) feature at 5780 $\text{{\AA}}$ fitted on spectra of O- and B-type stars with distance. As a result, we provide a lower limit distance of ACS as $\sim$8 kpc, which extends the lower limit outward by approximately 4 kpc compared to previous work. A byproduct of the DIB method is that we detected a bar-shaped structure with a unusually high positive line-of-sight velocity. Its shape extends along the (l,b)=(155,-5)$^{\circ}$ sight-line and shows a slightly increasing trend in equivalent width and velocity as the distance increases.

Improved ion bunch quality of conical target irradiated by ultra-intense and ultra-short laser

We conduct particle-in-cell simulations to estimate the effects of circularly and linearly polarized SEL 100 PW lasers on flat Th targets with thicknesses of 50 nm, 100 nm and 250 nm, as well as easy to manufacture conical Th targets with angularity either on the left or right. As the thickness of the three types of targets increases and under the same polarized laser, the average energy, maximum energy and energy conversion efficiency of Th ions decrease as it is well-known, and except for the circularly polarized laser hit on the conical target with angularity on the left, the Th ion beam emittance also decreases, while its beam intensity increases conversely. The linearly polarized laser, compared to the circularly polarized laser with the same laser intensity, exhibits higher beam intensity, beam emittance and energy conversion efficiency for the same type and thickness of Th target. The conical Th target with angularity on the left and intermediate thickness, compared to the flat target and conical target with angularity on the right of the same thickness, possesses both higher ion average energy up to 7 GeV and virtually the same beam intensity up to 0.8 MA under the linearly polarized laser. The results lead us to an easier way of controlling laser-accelerated high-quality heavy ion beam by switching to an optimal laser-target configuration scheme, which may enable the synthesis of superheavy nuclei in a high-temperature and high-density extreme plasma environment in astronuclear physics.

Bayesian evaluation of residual production cross sections in proton induced spallation reactions

The Bayesian neural network (BNN) method is used to construct a predictive model for fragment prediction of proton induced spallation reactions with the guidance of a simplified EPAX formula. Compared to the experimental data, it is found that the BNN + sEPAX model can reasonably extrapolate with less information compared with BNN method. The BNN + sEPAX method provides a new approach to predict the energy-dependent residual cross sections produced in proton-induced spallation reactions from tens of MeV/u up to several GeV/u.

A Bayesian-Neural-Network Prediction for Fragment Production in Proton Induced Spallation Reaction

Fragments productions in spallation reactions are key infrastructure data for various applications. Based on the empirical parameterizations {\sc spacs}, a Bayesian-neural-network (BNN) approach is established to predict the fragment cross sections in the proton induced spallation reactions. A systematic investigation have been performed for the measured proton induced spallation reactions of systems ranging from the intermediate to the heavy nuclei and the incident energy ranging from 168 MeV/u to 1500 MeV/u. By learning the residuals between the experimental measurements and the {\sc spacs} predictions, the BNN predicted results are in good agreement with the measured results. The established method is suggested to benefit the related researches in the nuclear astrophysics, nuclear radioactive beam source, accelerator driven systems, and proton therapy, etc.

Effect of resonance for $CP$ asymmetry of the decay process $\bar{B}_{s}\rightarrow Pπ^+π^-$ in perturbative QCD

In the framework of Perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach we study the direct $CP$ asymmetry for the decay channel $\bar{B}_{s}\rightarrow Pπ^+π^-$ around the resonance range via the $ρ-ω$ mixing mechanism (where P refer to pseudoscalar meson). We find that the $CP$ asymmetry can be enhanced by $ρ-ω$ mixing when the masses of the $π^+π^-$ pairs are at the area of $ρ-ω$ resonance, and the maximum $CP$ asymmetry can reach 59{\%} for the relevant decay channels.

ARABIS: an Asynchronous Acoustic Indoor Positioning System for Mobile Devices

Acoustic ranging based indoor positioning solutions have the advantage of higher ranging accuracy and better compatibility with commercial-off-the-self consumer devices. However, similar to other time-domain based approaches using Time-of-Arrival and Time-Difference-of-Arrival, they suffer from performance degradation in presence of multi-path propagation and low received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in indoor environments. In this paper, we improve upon our previous work on asynchronous acoustic indoor positioning and develop ARABIS, a robust and low-cost acoustic positioning system (IPS) for mobile devices. We develop a low-cost acoustic board custom-designed to support large operational ranges and extensibility. To mitigate the effects of low SNR and multi-path propagation, we devise a robust algorithm that iteratively removes possible outliers by taking advantage of redundant TDoA estimates. Experiments have been carried in two testbeds of sizes 10.67m*7.76m and 15m*15m, one in an academic building and one in a convention center. The proposed system achieves average and 95% quantile localization errors of 7.4cm and 16.0cm in the first testbed with 8 anchor nodes and average and 95% quantile localization errors of 20.4cm and 40.0cm in the second testbed with 4 anchor nodes only.

$CP$ violation induced by the double resonance for pure annihilation decay process in Perturbative QCD

In Perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach we study the direct $CP$ violation in the pure annihilation decay process of $\bar{B}^0_{s}\rightarrowπ^+π^-π^+π^-$ induced by the $ρ$ and $ω$ double resonance effect. Generally, the $CP$ violation is small in the pure annihilation type decay process. However, we find that the $CP$ violation can be enhanced by double $ρ-ω$ interference when the invariant masses of the $π^+π^-$ pairs are in the vicinity of the $ω$ resonance. For the decay process of $\bar{B}^0_{s}\rightarrowπ^+π^-π^+π^-$, the maximum $CP$ violation can reach 28.64{\%}.

$CP$ violation for $B^+_{c}\rightarrow D_{(s)}^+π^+π^-$ in Perturbative QCD

In the perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach we study the direct $CP$ violation in $B^+_{c}\rightarrow D_{(s)}^+ρ^0(ω) \rightarrow D_{(s)}^+π^+π^-$ via the $ρ-ω$ mixing mechanism. We find that the $CP$ violation can be enhanced by $ρ-ω$ mixing when the invariant masses of the $π^+π^-$ pairs are in the vicinity of the $ω$ resonance. For the decay process $B^+_{c}\rightarrow D^+ρ^0(ω) \rightarrow D^+π^+π^-$, the maximum $CP$ violation can reach 7.5 {\%}.
