A phenomenological universal expression for the condensate fraction in strongly-correlated two-dimensional Bose gases

We investigate the relation between non-local and energetic properties in two-dimensional quantum systems of zero-temperature bosons. By analyzing numerous interaction potentials across densities spanning from perturbative to the strongly correlated regime, we discover a novel high-precision quantum phenomenological universality: the condensate fraction can be expressed through kinetic energy and quantum energy, defined as total energy relative to the classical crystal state. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations accurately validate our analytical expression. Furthermore, we test the obtained relation on the fundamental example of a non-perturbative system, namely, liquid helium. The proposed relation is relevant to experiments with excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) materials, as well as ultracold atoms and other quantum systems in reduced dimensionality.

Finite-size effects in two-photon correlations of exciton Bose-Einstein condensates

Accessing two-photon statistics via Hunbary Brown and Twiss (HBT)-type measurements is essential for investigations of excitonic Bose-condensates. In this paper we make use of quantum hydrodynamics in order to study the finite-size impact on the two-photon emission intensity of a 2D condensate of excitons. We use the developed approach to calculate the two-photon decay time of exciton condensate in GaAs quantum wells and MoS$_2$ bilayers. We demonstrate that the registered signal scales on the sample size in a qualitatively different manner than the Bogoliubov theory predicts.

Stochastic model for assesing coherent properties of polariton condensates

By considering a microscopical model, we derive an evolution equation for single-mode polariton condensate taking into account the fluctuations of the order parameter. We use it to derive an analytical expression for the second order correlation function and the share of coherent occupation of the condensate in presence of pumping-leakage balance.

Spontaneous breaking of time translation symmetry in a system without periodic external driving

It is known that the spontaneous time translation symmetry breaking can occur in systems periodically driven at a certain period. We predict a spontaneous breaking of time translation symmetry in an atom-cavity system without external driving, in which a time scale is determined by the time of light bypass of the resonator. We demonstrate that there is a parameter range, in which a system state returns to its initial state only after two bypasses of the resonator. We believe that the predicted phenomenon opens a way to a new direction in the time crystal field.

Density-wave-type supersolid of two-dimensional tilted dipolar bosons

We predict a stable density-waves-type supersolid phase of a dilute gas of tilted dipolar bosons in a two-dimensional (2D) geometry. This many-body phase is manifested by the formation of the stripe pattern and elasticity coexisting together with the Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity at zero temperature. With the increasing the tilting angle the type of the gas-supersolid transition changes from the first order to the second one despite the 2D character of the system, whereas the anisotropy and many-body stabilizing interactions play crucial role. Our approach is based on the numerical analysis of the phase diagram using the simulated annealing method for a free-energy functional. The predicted supersolid effect can be realized in a variety of experimental setups ranging from excitons in heterostructures to cold atoms and polar molecules in optical potentials.

Mean field study of 2D quasiparticle condensate formation in presence of strong decay

Bose-condensation in a system of 2D quasiparticles is considered in the scope of a microscopic model. Mean-field dynamical equations are derived with the help of the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism and a simple model is proposed which allows to describe key features of condensate formation in systems with various quasiparticle decay rates. By analysing stationary solutions of this equation, we obtain the phase diagram of quasiparticle gas, finding a bistability region in the parameter space of the system. Finally, as an application of our theory, we study the phase diagram of a 2D exciton-polariton system in CdTe microcavity.

Signature of exceptional point phase transition in Hermitian systems

Exceptional point (EP) is a spectral singularity in non-Hermitian systems. The passing over the EP leads to a phase transition, which endows the system with unconventional features that find a wide range of applications. However, the need of using the dissipation and amplification limits the possible applications of systems with the EP. In this work, we demonstrate an existence of signature of exceptional point phase transition in Hermitian systems that are free from dissipation and amplification. We consider a composite Hermitian system including both two coupled oscillators and their environment consisting only of several tens of degrees of freedom. We show that the dynamics of such a Hermitian system demonstrate a transition, which occurs at the coupling strength between oscillators corresponding to the EP in the non-Hermitian system. This transition manifests itself even in the non-Markovian regime of the system dynamics in which collapses and revivals of the energy occur. Thus, we demonstrate that the phase transition occurring at the passing over the EP in the non-Hermitian system manifests itself in the Hermitian system at all time. We discuss the experimental scheme to observe the signature of EP phase transition in the non-Markovian regime.

Self-consistent description of relaxation processes in systems with ultra- and deep-strong coupling

An ultra-strong coupling regime takes place in a compound system when a coupling strength between the subsystems exceeds one tenth of the system eigenfrequency. It transforms into a deep-strong coupling regime when the coupling strength exceeds the system eigenfrequency. In these regimes, there are difficulties with description of relaxation processes without explicit considering of environment degrees of freedom. To correctly evaluate the relaxation rates, it is necessary to consider the interaction of the system with its environment taking into account the counter-rotating wave and diamagnetic terms. We develop a self-consistent theory for calculation of the relaxation rates in the systems, in which the coupling strength is of the order of the system eigenfrequency. We demonstrate that the increase in the coupling strength can lead to a significant decrease in the relaxation rates. In particular, we show that for frequency-independent density of states of the environment, the relaxation rates decrease exponentially with the increase in the coupling strength. This fact can be used to suppress losses by tuning the strength coupling and the environment states.

Non-Markovian stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate

In this paper, a non-Markovian Gross-Pitaevskii equation is proposed to describe the formation of a condensate in an exciton-polariton system under incoherent pumping. By introducing spatially delta-correlated noise terms, we observe a transition from a spatially ordered phase to a disordered one as the temperature increases. In course of this process, the population of the condensate is significantly reduced. Irregularly located separate dense spots of condensate above the transition temperature are revealed. Using the Gabor transform, it is shown that, with increasing temperature, the condensate decoheres, that is accompanied by the transition from narrowband to broadband spectral density.

Analytical framework for non-equilibrium phase transition to Bose--Einstein condensate

The theoretical description of non-equilibrium Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) is one of the main challenges in modern statistical physics and kinetics. The non-equilibrium nature of BEC makes it impossible to employ the well-established formalism of statistical mechanics. We develop a framework for the analytical description of a non-equilibrium phase transition to BEC that, in contrast to previously developed approaches, takes into account the infinite number of continuously distributed states. We consider the limit of fast thermalization and obtain an analytical expression for the full density matrix of a non-equilibrium ideal BEC which also covers the equilibrium case. For the particular cases of 2D and 3D, we investigate the non-equilibrium formation of BEC by finding the temperature dependence of the ground state occupation and second-order coherence function. We show that for a given pumping rate, the macroscopic occupation of the ground state and buildup of coherence may occur at different temperatures. Moreover, the buildup of coherence strongly depends on the pumping scheme. We also investigate the condensate linewidth and show that the Schawlow--Townes law holds for BEC in 3D and does not hold for BEC in 2D.

Anomalous Josephson effect of s-wave pairing states in chiral double layers

We consider s-wave pairing in a double layer of two chiral metals due to Coulomb interaction, and study the Josephson effect near a domain wall, where the sign of the order parameter jumps. The domain wall creates two zero energy modes, whose superposition is associated with a current that flows in different direction in the two layers. Assuming a toroidal geometry, the effective Josephson currents winds around the domain walls, whose winding number is determined by the coefficients of the superimposed zero energy modes. This result can be understood as a competition of the conventional Josephson current perpendicular and the edge current parallel to a domain wall in a double layer of two chiral metals. As a realization we suggest the surface of a ring-shaped topological insulator. The duality between electron-electron and electron-hole double layers indicates that this effect should also be observable in excitonic double layers.

Finite-temperature Hatree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory for exciton-polaritons

Microcavity exciton-polaritons, known to exhibit non-equilibrium Bose condensation at high critical temperatures, can be also brought in thermal equilibrium with the surrounding medium and form a quantum degenerate Bose-Einstein distribution. It happens when their thermalization time in the regime of positive detunings -- or, alternatively, for high-finesse microcavities -- becomes shorter than their lifetime. Here we present the self-consistent finite-temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov description for such a system of polaritons, universally addressing the excitation spectrum, momentum-dependent interactions, condensate depletion, and the background population of dark excitons that contribute to the system's chemical potential. Employing the derived expressions, we discuss the implications for the Bogoliubov sound velocity, confirmed by existing experiments, and define the critical temperatures of (quasi-)condensation and the integral particle lifetime dependencies on the detuning. Large positive detunings are shown to provide conditions for the total lifetime reaching nanosecond timescales. This allows realization of thermodynamically-equilibrium polariton systems with Bose-Einstein condensate forming at temperatures as high as tens of Kelvin.

A new type of non-Hermitian phase transition in open systems far from thermal equilibrium

We demonstrate a new type of non-Hermitian phase transition in open systems far from thermal equilibrium, which takes place in coupled systems interacting with reservoirs at different temperatures. The frequency of the maximum in the spectrum of energy flow through the system plays the role of the order parameter, and is determined by an analog of the -potential. The phase transition is exhibited in the frequency splitting of the spectrum at a critical point, the value of which is determined by the relaxation rates and the coupling strengths. Near the critical point, fluctuations of the order parameter diverge according to a power law. We show that the critical exponent depends only on the ratio of reservoir temperatures. This dependence indicates the non-equilibrium nature of the phase transition at the critical point. This new non-Hermitian phase transition can take place in systems without exceptional points.

Universal fluctuations and squeezing in generalized Dicke model near the superradiant phase transition

In a view of recent proposals for the realization of anisotropic light-matter interaction in such platforms as (i) non-stationary or inductively and capacitively coupled superconducting qubits, (ii) atoms in crossed fields and (iii) semiconductor heterostructures with spin-orbital interaction, the concept of generalized Dicke model, where coupling strengths of rotating wave and counter-rotating wave terms are unequal, has attracted great interest. For this model, we study photon fluctuations in the critical region of normal-to-superradiant phase transition when both the temperatures and numbers of two-level systems are finite. In this case, the superradiant quantum phase transition is changed to a fluctuational region in the phase diagram that reveals two types of critical behaviors. These are regimes of Dicke model (with discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry), and that of (anti-) and Tavis-Cummings $U(1)$ models. We show that squeezing parameters of photon condensate in these regimes show distinct temperature scalings. Besides, relative fluctuations of photon number take universal values. We also find a temperature scales below which one approaches zero-temperature quantum phase transition where quantum fluctuations dominate. Our effective theory is provided by a non-Goldstone functional for condensate mode and by Majorana representation of Pauli operators. We also discuss Bethe ansatz solution for integrable $U(1)$ limits.

Estimation of the condensate fraction from the static structure factor

We present an analytical method to estimate the condensate fraction $n_0/n$ in strongly correlated systems for which the zero-temperature static structure factor $S({\bf p})$ is known. The advantage of the proposed method is that it allows one to predict the long-range behavior of the one-body density matrix (i) in macroscopic and mesoscopic systems, (ii) in three- and two-dimensional geometry, (iii) at zero and low finite temperature, and (iv) in weakly and strongly correlated regimes. Our method is tested against exact values obtained with various quantum Monte Carlo methods in a number of strongly correlated systems showing an excellent agreement. The proposed technique is also useful in numerical simulations as it allows one to extrapolate the condensate fraction to the thermodynamic limit for particle numbers as small as tens to hundreds. Our method is especially valuable for extracting the condensate fraction from the experimentally measured static structure factor $S({\bf p})$, thus providing a new simple alternative technique for the estimation of $n_0/n$. We analyze available experimental data for $S({\bf p})$ of superfluid helium and find an excellent agreement with the experimental value of $n_0/n$.

Quantum phase transition of a two-dimensional quadrupolar system

Ensembles with long-range interactions between particles are promising for revealing strong quantum collective effects and many-body phenomena. Here we study the ground-state phase diagram of a two-dimensional Bose system with quadrupolar interactions using a diffusion Monte Carlo technique. We predict a quantum phase transition from a gas to a solid phase. The Lindemann ratio and the condensate fraction at the transition point are $γ=0.269(4)$ and $n_0/n=0.031(4)$, correspondingly. We observe the strong rotonization of the collective excitation branch in the vicinity of the phase transition point. Our results can be probed using state-of-the-art experimental systems of various nature, such as quasi-two-dimensional systems of quadrupolar excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) trilayers, quadrupolar molecules, and excitons or Rydberg atoms with quadrupole moments induced by strong magnetic fields.

Plasmonic modes at inclined edges of anisotropic 2D materials

Confined modes at the edge arbitrarily inclined with respect to optical axes of nonmagnetic anisotropic 2D materials are considered. By developing the exact Wiener-Hopf and approximated Fetter methods we studied edge modes dispersions, field and charge density distributions. The 2D layer is described by the Lorentz-type conductivities in one or both directions, which is realistic for natural anisotropic 2D materials and resonant hyperbolic metasurfaces. We demonstrate that, due to anisotropy, the edge mode exists only at wave vectors exceeding the nonzero threshold value if the edge is tilted with respect to the direction of the resonant conductivity. The dominating contribution to field and charge density spatial profiles is provided by evanescent 2D waves, which are confined both in space near the 2D layer and along the layer near its edge. The degree of field confinement along the layer is determined by wave vector or frequency mismatch between the edge mode and continuum of freely propagating 2D modes. Our analysis is suitable for various types of polaritons (plasmon-, phonon-, exciton-polaritons etc.) at large enough wave vectors. Thanks to superior field confinement in all directions perpendicular to the edge these modes look promising for modern plasmonics and sensorics.

Topological Pauli Phase and Fractional Quantization of Orbital Angular Momentum in the Problems of Classical and Quantum Physics

Physical problems for which the existence of non-trivial topological Pauli phase (i.e. fractional quantization of angular orbital angular momenta that is possible in 2D case) is essential are discussed within the framework of two-dimensional Helmholtz, Schroedinger and Dirac equations. As examples in classical field theory we consider a "wedge problem" -- a description of a field generated by a point charge between two conducting half-planes -- and a Fresnel diffraction from knife-edge. In few-electron circular quantum dots the choice between integer and half-integer quantization of orbital angular momenta is defined by the Pauli principle. This is in line with precise experimental data for the ground state energy of such quantum dots in a perpendicular magnetic field. In a gapless graphene, as in the case of gapped one, in the presence of overcharged impurity this problem can be solved experimentally, e.g., using the method of scanning tunnel spectroscopy.
