Competition of multiband superconducting and magnetic order in ErNi2B2C observed by Andreev reflection

Point contacts (PC) Andreev reflection dV/dI spectra for the antiferromagnetic (T_N =6K) superconductor (Tc=11K) ErNi2B2C have been measured for the two main crystallographic directions. Observed retention of the Andreev reflection minima in dV/dI up to Tc directly points to unusual superconducting order parameter (OP) vanishing at Tc. Temperature dependence of OP was obtained from dV/dI using recent theory of Andreev reflection including pair-breaking effect. For the first time existence of a two superconducting OPs in ErNi2B2C is shown. A distinct decrease of both OPs as temperature is lowered below T_N is observed.

Spin Diode Based on Fe/MgO Double Tunnel Junction

We demonstrate a spin diode consisting of a semiconductor free nano-scale Fe/MgO-based double tunnel junction. The device exhibits a near perfect spin-valve effect combined with a strong diode effect. The mechanism consistent with our data is resonant tunneling through discrete states in the middle ferromagnetic layer sandwiched by tunnel barriers of different spin-dependent transparency. The observed magneto-resistance is record high, ~4000%, essentially making the structure an on/off spin-switch. This, combined with the strong diode effect, ~100, offers a new device that should be promising for such technologies as magnetic random access memory and re-programmable logic.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the antiferromagnetic superconductor HoNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting state

Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on antiferromagnetic (AF) (T_N=5.2K) HoNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and two different superconducting (SC) states (T_c=8.5K and $T_c^*=5.6K) are reported. The PC study of the electron-boson(phonon) interaction (EB(P)I) spectral function reveals pronounced phonon maxima at 16, 22 and 34meV. For the first time the high energy maxima at about 50meV and 100meV are resolved. Additionally, an admixture of a crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations with a maximum near 10meV and a `magnetic` peak near 3meV are observed. The contribution of the 10-meV peak in PC EPI constant λ_PC is evaluated as 20-30%, while contribution of the high energy modes at 50 and 100meV amounts about 10% for each maxima, so the superconductivity might be affected by CEF excitations. The SC gap in HoNi2B2C exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like dependence, but vanishes at $T_c^*=5.6K<T_c, with 2Δ/kT_c^*=3.9. The strong coupling Eliashberg analysis of the low-temperature SC phase with T_c^*=5.6K =T_N, coexisting with the commensurate AF structure, suggests a sizable value of the EPI constant λ_s=0.93. We also provide strong support for the recently proposed by us ''Fermi surface (FS) separation'' scenario for the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in magnetic borocarbides, namely, that the superconductivity in the commensurate AF phase survives at a special (nearly isotropic) FS sheet without an admixture of Ho 5d states. Above T_c^* the SC features in the PC characteristics are strongly suppressed pointing to a specific weakened SC state between T_c* and T_c.

Surface Spin-valve Effect

We report an observation of spin-valve like hysteresis within a few atomic layers at a ferromagnetic interface. We use phonon spectroscopy of nanometer sized point contacts as an in-situ probe to study the mechanism of the effect. Distinct in energy phonon peaks for contacts with dissimilar nonmagnetic outer electrodes allow to localize the observed spin switching to the top or bottom interfaces for nanometer thin ferromagnetic layers. The mechanism consistent with our data is energetically distinct atomically thin surface spin layers that can form current or field driven surface spin-valves within a single ferromagnetic film.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting state

Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements of YNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) spectral function with dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV and further weak structures (hump or kink) at higher energy at about 50 meV. No "soft" modes below 12 meV are resolved in the normal state. The PC EPI spectra are qualitatively similar for the different directions. Contrary, directional study of the SC gap results in Δ_[100]=1.5 meV for the a direction and Δ_[001]=2.3 meV along the c axis; however the critical temperature T_c in PC in all cases is near to that in the bulk sample. The value 2Δ_[001]/kT_c=3.6 is close to the BCS value of 3.52, and the temperature dependence Δ_[001](T) is BCS-like, while the for small gap Δ_[100](T) is below BCS behavior at T>T_c/2 similarly as in the two-gap superconductor MgB2. It is supposed that the directional variation Δcan be attributed to a multiband nature of the SC state in YNi2B2C.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C

Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on YNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) function with a dominant maximum around 12meV and a further weak structure (kink or shallow broad maximum) at higher energy at about 50meV. Other phonon maxima at 20, 24 and 32meV specified in the phonon DOS of YNi2B2C by neutron measurements [PRB, V.55, 9058 (1997)] are not resolved in the PC spectra pointing out to the main role of the low energy phonon modes in EPI. Directional study of the SC gap results in Δ_[100]=1.5meV for the a- direction and Δ_[001]=2.4meV along the c-axis which may point to anisotropic and/or multiband behavior. Noteworthy, the critical temperature T_c in all cases corresponds to that of bulk samples. The value 2Δ_[001]/kT_c=3.6 is close to the BCS one of 3.52, and the temperature dependence Δ(T) is BCS-like, while for the a-direction Δ(T) deviates from mean-field BCS behavior above T_c/2. The directional variation in Δcan be attributed to the multiband nature of the SC state in YNi2B2C predicted 10 years ago (PRL, V.80, 1730 (1998)).

Point-contact spectroscopy of the antiferromagnetic superconductor HoNi2B2C

The point-contact (PC) spectroscopy study of the electron-phonon(boson) interaction (EP(B)I) spectral function in HoNi2B2C reveals phonon maxima at 16 and 22meV and 34meV. For the first time the pronounced high energy maxima at about 50meV and 100meV were resolved. Additionally, an admixture of a crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitation with a maximum near 10meV and a `magnetic` peak near 3meV are observed. The contribution of the CEF peak in EP(B)I constant λ_{PC} is evaluated as 20-30%, while contribution of the high frequency modes at 50 and 100meV amounts about 10% for each maxima. PC Andreev reflection measurements below the critical temperature T_c=8.5K reveals two different superconducting (SC) states separated by T_c^*=5.6K which is close to the Neel temperature T_N=5.3K. Below T_c^* the gap Δin HoNi2B2C exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like behavior with 2Δ/kT_c^*=3.9. Above T_c^* the gap features in PC spectra are strongly suppressed pointing to a peculiar SC state between T_c^* and T_c, where incommensurate magnetic order develops.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductors RNi2B2C (R=Y, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu)

An overview of the recent efforts in point-contact (PC) spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductors RNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting (SC) state is given. The results of measurements of the PC electron- boson(phonon) interaction spectral function are presented. Phonon maxima and crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations are observed in the PC spectra of compounds with R=Dy, Ho, Er and Tm, while for R=Y a dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV is characteristic. Additionally, non-phonon and non-CEF maxima are observed near 3 meV in R=Ho and near 6 meV in R=Dy. Directional PC study of the SC gap gives evidence for the multi-band nature of superconductivity in R=Y, Lu. At low temperature the SC gap in R=Ho exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like dependence, which vanishes above T_c^*= 5.6K< T_c=8.5K, where a specifc magnetic ordering starts to play a role. For R=Tm (T_c=10.5 K) a decrease of the SC gap is observed below 5 K.

Magnetic unipolar features in con- ductivity of point contacts between normal and ferromagnetic d-metals (Co, Ni, Fe)

In nanocontacts between normal and ferromagnetic metals (N--F) abrupt changes of the order of 1% are detected in differential resistance, dV/dI(V), versus bias voltage, V, on achieving of high current densities, ~10^9 A/cm^2. These features in dV/dI(V) are observed when the electron flow is directed from the nonmagnetic metal into the ferromagnet and connected with magnetization excitations in the ferromagnet induced by the current. Applying an external magnetic field leads to a shift of the observed features to higher biasing current, confirming the magnetic nature of the effect. Such effects are observed for the non-ballistic (not spectral) regime of current flow in the nanocontacts. Thus, the current induced magneto-conductance effects in multilayered N--F structures (nanopillars) extensively studied in the recent literature have much more general character and can be stimulated by elastic electron scattering at single N--F interfaces.

Spectroscopy of phonons and spin torques in magnetic point contacts

Phonon spectroscopy is used to investigate the mechanism of current-induced spin torques in nonmagnetic/ferromagnetic (N/F) point contacts. Magnetization excitations observed in the magneto-conductance of the point contacts are pronounced for diffusive and thermal contacts, where the electrons experience significant scattering in the contact region. We find no magnetic excitations in highly ballistic contacts. Our results show that impurity scattering at the N/F interface is the origin of the new single-interface spin torque effect.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the normal state excitations in PrOs4Sb12

Point-contact (PC) investigations of the heavy-fermion (HF) superconductor PrOs4Sb12 in the temperature range between 1.5 and 4.2K and in a magnetic field up to 8T are presented. The main feature in PC spectra, the second derivative of the I-V curves, in the normal state is a peak at about 1-3mV. This low energy peak is smeared by the temperature rise and suppressed (or splitted) by a magnetic field. The origin of the peak is likely excitation of the Pr^3+ ion from the ground $Γ_1$ state to the upper $Γ_5$ state, considering the generally accepted crystalline electric field (CEF) schema in PrOs4Sb12. Absence of the visible features of other CEF transitions in the PC spectra testifies to the dominant coupling of the conducting electrons with this low-lying (about 1meV in energy) excitation. Thus, this interaction is important for ascertainment of the nature of HF and superconducting state in PrOs4Sb12.

Distribution of the superconducting gap in an YNi2B2C film studied by point contact spectroscopy

The differential resistances $R_d=dV/dI(V)$ of point contacts between a normal metal and a c axis oriented YNi2B2C film ($T_c$ = 15.2K) in the superconducting (SC) state have been investigated. $R_d(V)$ contains clear "gap" features connected with processes of Andreev reflection at the boundary between normal metal and superconductor that allow the determination of the SC gap $Δ$ and its temperature and magnetic field dependence. A distribution of $Δ$ from $Δ_min\approx$ 1.5 meV to $Δ_max\approx$ 2.4 meV is revealed; however the critical temperature $T_c$ in all cases corresponded to that of the film. The value 2$Δ_max/k_BT_c\approx$3.66 is close to the BCS value of 3.52, and the temperature dependence $Δ(T)$ is BCS-like, irrespective of the actual $Δ$ value. It is supposed that the distribution of $Δ$ can be attributed to a gap anisotropy or to a multiband nature of the SC state in YNi2B2C, rather than to the presence of nodes in the gap.

Excess current in point contacts on two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ in magnetic field

Series of $I(V)$ characteristic and bias-dependent differential resistance $dV/dI(V)$ for point-contacts on the single crystals of two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ were measured in magnetic field up to 9 T. We have obtained magnetic field dependences of the excess current on the $I(V)$ curves and analyzed them using Koshelev and Golubov (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 90}, 177002 (2003)) theoretical results for the mixed state of a dirty two-band superconductor. Introducing a simple model for the excess current in the point contact in the mixed state our data can be qualitatively described utilizing theoretical magnetic filed behavior of the $σ$ and $π$-band superconducting order parameters and the corresponding averaged electronic density of states in MgB$_2$.

Realization of an N-shaped IVC of nanoscale metallic junctions using the antiferromagnetic transition

We have observed at low temperatures (<8K) hysteretic I(V) characteristics for sub-mkm (~200nm) metallic break-junctions based on the heavy-fermion compound UPd2Al3. Degrading the quality of the contacts by in situ increasing the local residual resistivity or temperature rise reduces the hysteresis. We demonstrate that those hysteretic I(V) curves can be reproduced theoretically by assuming the constriction to be in the thermal regime. Our calculations show that such anomalous I(V) curves are due to the sharp increase of ρ(T) of UPd2Al3 near the Neel temperature T_N ~ 14K. From this point of view each metal with similar ρ(T) should produce similar hysteretic I(V) curves. As example we show calculations for the rare-earth manganite La{0.75}Sr{0.25}MnO3, a system with colossal magnetoresistance. In this way we demonstrate that nano-sized point contacts can be non-linear devices with N-shaped I(V) characteristics, i. e. with negative differential resistance, that could serve like Esaki tunnel diodes or Gunn diodes as amplifiers, generators, and switching units. Their characteristic response time is estimated to be less than 1ns for the investigated contacts.

An overview on recent efforts in point-contact (PC) spectroscopy of title superconductors is given. Distinct phonon features and crystalline-electric-field effects are observed in PC spectra of HoNi2B2C. Results of study of superconducting (SC) gap and excess current versus temperature and magnetic field reflecting specific multi-band electronic structure in MgB2 are presented. The nature of the extremely nonlinear I(V) curves in the antiferromagnetic (AF) and SC state are elucidated for UPd2Al3 break-junctions and MgCNi3 point contacts.

The antiferromagnetic transition of UPd2Al3 break-junctions: A new realization of N-shaped current-voltage characteristics

We have investigated metallic break junctions of the heavy-fermion compound UPd2Al3 at low temperatures between 0.1K and 9K and in magnetic fields up to 8T. Both the current-voltage I(V) characteristics and the dV/dI (V) spectra clearly showed the superconducting ($T_{\rm c}\simeq$ 1.8K) as well as the antiferromagnetic ($T_{\rm N}\simeq$14K) transition at low temperatures when the bias voltage is raised. The junctions with lateral size of order 200nm had huge critical current densities around $5\times 10^{10} A/m^2 at the antiferromagnetic transition and hysteretic I(V) characteristics. Degrading the quality of the contacts by in situ increasing the local residual resistivity reduced the hysteresis. We show that those hysteretic I(V) curves can be reproduced theoretically by assuming the constriction to be in the thermal regime. It turns out that these point contacts represent non-linear devices with N-shaped I(V) characteristics that have a negative differential resistance like an Esaki tunnel diode.

Advances in point-contact spectroscopy: two-band superconductor MgB2 (A review)

Analysis of the point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) data on the new dramatic high-T$_c$ superconductor MgB$_2$ reveals quite different behavior of two disconnected $σ$ and $π$ electronic bands, deriving from their anisotropy, different dimensionality, and electron-phonon interaction. PCS allows direct registration of both the superconducting gaps and electron-phonon-interaction spectral function of the two-dimensional $σ$ and three-dimensional $π$ band, establishing correlation between the gap value and intensity of the high-T$_c$ driving force -- the $E_{2g}$ boron vibration mode. PCS data on some nonsuperconducting transition-metal diborides are surveyed for comparison.

Comment on "Experimental determination of superconducting parameters for the intermetallic perovskite superconductor MgCNi$_3$"

In a recent paper (Phys. Rev. {\bf B 67}, 094502 (2003)) Mao et al. investigated the bias-dependent conductance of mechanical junctions between superconducting MgCNi$_3$ and a sharp W tip. They interpreted their results in terms of 'single-particle tunneling'. We show it is more likely that current transport through those junctions is determined by thermal effects due to the huge normal-state resistivity of MgCNi$_3$. Therefore no conclusion can be drawn about the possible unconventional pairing or strong-coupling superconductivity in MgCNi$_3$.
