Superconducting proximity effect in clean ferromagnetic layers

We investigate superconducting proximity effect in clean ferromagnetic layers with rough boundaries. The subgap density of states is formed by Andreev bound states at energies which depend on trajectory length and the ferromagnetic exchange field. At energies above the gap, the spectrum is governed by resonant scattering states. The resulting density of states, measurable by tunneling spectroscopy, exhibits a rich structure, which allows to connect the theoretical parameters from experiments.

Full counting statistics of a general quantum mechanical variable

We present here a quantum mechanical framework for defining the statistics of measurements of time integrals of A(t), A(t) being a quantum mechanical variable. This is a generalization of the so-called full counting statistics proposed earlier for DC electric currents. We develop an influence functional formalism that allows us to study the quantum system along with the measuring device thus fully accounting for the action of the detector on the system to be measured. We define the full counting statistics of an arbitrary variable by means of an evolution operator that relates initial and final density matrices of the measuring device. In this way we are able to resolve inconsistencies that occur in earlier definitions. We suggest two schemes whereby the so defined full statistics can be observed experimentally.

Manipulation of photon statistics of highly degenerate chaotic radiation

Highly degenerate chaotic radiation has a Gaussian density matrix and a large occupation number of modes $f $. If it is passed through a weakly transmitting barrier, its counting statistics is close to Poissonian. We show that a second identical barrier, in series with the first, drastically modifies the statistics. The variance of the photocount is increased above the mean by a factor $f$ times a numerical coefficient. The photocount distribution reaches a limiting form with a Gaussian body and highly asymmetric tails. These are general consequences of the combination of weak transmission and multiple scattering.

Spin-transport in multi-terminal normal metal - ferromagnet systems with non-collinear magnetizations

A theory of spin-transport in hybrid normal metal - ferromagnetic electronic circuits is developed, taking into account non-collinear spin-accumulation. Spin-transport through resistive elements is described by 4 conductance parameters. Microscopic expression for these conductances are derived in terms of scattering matrices and explicitly calculated for simple models. The circuit theory is applied to 2-terminal and 3-terminal devices attached to ferromagnetic reservoirs.

Andreev States in long shallow SNS constrictions

We study Andreev bound states in a long shallow normal constriction, which is open to a superconductor at both ends. The interesting features of such setup include the absence of electron-hole symmetry and the interference of electron waves along the constriction. We compare results of a numerical approach based on the Bogoliubov equations with those of a refined semiclassical description. Three types of Andreev bound states occur in the constriction: {\it i}) one where both electron and hole wave part of the bound state propagate through the constriction, {\it ii}) one where neither electron nor hole wave part propagate, and {\it iii}) one where only the electron wave propagates. We show that in a wide energy region the spacing between the Andreev states is strongly modulated by the interference of electron waves passing the constriction.

Inelastic co-tunneling through an excited state of a quantum dot

We consider the transport spectroscopy of a quantum dot with an even number of electrons at finite bias voltage within the Coulomb blockade diamond. We calculate the tunneling current due to the elastic and inelastic co-tunneling processes associated with the spin-singlet ground state and the spin-triplet first excited state. We find a step in the differential conductance at a bias voltage equal to the excitation energy with a peak at the step edge. This may explain the recently observed sharp features in finite bias spectroscopy of semi-conductor quantum dots and carbon nanotubes. Two limiting cases are considered: (i) for a low excitation energy, the excited state can decay only by inelastic co-tunneling due to Coulomb blockade (ii) for a higher excitation energy the excited state can decay by sequential tunneling. We consider two spin-degenerate orbitals that are active in the transport. The nonequilibrium state of the dot is described using master equations taking spin degrees of freedom into account. The transition rates are calculated up to second order in perturbation theory. To calculate the current we derive a closed set of master equations for the spin-averaged occupations of the transport states.

Coherent and incoherent pumping of electrons in double quantum dots

We propose a new mode of operation of an electron pump consisting of two weakly coupled quantum dots connected to reservoirs. An electron can be transferred within the device at zero bias voltage when it is subjected to electromagnetic radiation, thereby exciting the double dot. The excited state can decay by transferring charge from one lead and to the other lead in one direction. Depending on the energies of the intermediate states in the pumping cycle, which are controlled by the gate voltages, this transport is either incoherent via well-known sequential tunneling processes, or coherent via a inelastic co-tunneling process. The latter novel mode of operation is possible only when interdot Coulomb charging is important. The D.C. transport through the system can be controlled by the frequency of the applied radiation. We concentrate on the resonant case, when the frequency matches the energy difference for exciting an electron from one dot into the other. The resonant peaks in the pumping current should be experimentally observable. We have developed a density matrix approach which describes the dynamics of the system on timescales much larger than the period of the applied irradiation. In contrast to previous works we additionally consider the case of slow modulation of the irradiation amplitude. Harmonic modulation produces additional sidepeaks in the photoresponse, and pulsed modulation can be used to resolve the Rabi frequency in the time-averaged current.

Oscillations of Andreev states in clean ferromagnetic films

We investigate the influence of the exchange field on the Andreev bound states in a ferromagnetic (F) film backed on one side by a superconductor (S). Our model accounts for diffusive reflection at the outer surface and possible backscattering at the FS-interface. Phase shifting of the Andreev level by the exchange field results in an oscillatory behaviour of the density of states of F as a function of the layer thickness. We show that our results agree quantitatively with recent experiments.

Conductance modulation by spin precession in non-collinear ferromagnet-normal metal-ferromagnet systems

We study diffusive transport through ferromagnet - normal metal - ferromagnet (F-N-F) systems, with arbitrary but fixed magnetization directions of the ferromagnetic reservoirs and orientations of a magnetic field applied to the normal metal. For non-collinear configurations, the complex mixing conductance describes the transport of spins non-collinear to the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic reservoirs. When the imaginary part of the mixing conductance is different from zero, the total conductance of the system in the presence of a magnetic field can be asymmetric with respect to time reversal. The total conductance changes non-monotonically with the magnetic field strength for different magnetic configurations. This modulation of the conductance is due to the precession of the spin accumulation in the normal metal. The difference between the conductance of the parallel and antiparallel configurations can be either positive or negative as a function of the applied magnetic field. This effect should be best observable on Al single crystals attached to ferromagnetic electrodes by means of tunnel junctions or metallic contacts.

Spin-accumulation and Andreev-reflection in a mesoscopic ferromagnetic wire

The electron transport though ferromagnetic metal-superconducting hybrid devices is considered in the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism in the quasiclassical approximation. Attention if focused on the limit in which the exchange splitting in the ferromagnet is much larger than the superconducting energy gap. Transport properties are then governed by an interplay between spin-accumulation close to the interface and Andreev reflection at the interface. We find that the resistance can either be enhanced or lowered in comparison to the normal case and can have a non-monotonic temperature and voltage dependence. In the non-linear voltage regime electron heating effects may govern the transport properties, leading to qualitative different behaviour than in the absence of heating effects. Recent experimental results on the effect of the superconductor on the conductance of the ferromagnet can be understood by our results for the energy-dependent interface resistance together with effects of spin- accumulation without invoking long range pairing correlations in the ferromagnet.

Universality of the Kondo Effect in a Quantum Dot out of Equilibrium

We study the Kondo effect in a quantum dot driven out of equilibrium by an external ac field. The Kondo effect can be probed by measuring the dc current induced by an auxiliary dc bias $V_{dc}$ applied across the dot. In the absence of ac perturbation, the corresponding differential conductance $G(V_{dc})$ is known to exhibit a sharp peak at $V_{dc}=0$, which is the manifestation of the Kondo effect. In the equilibrium, there exists only one energy scale, the Kondo temperature $T_K$, which controls all the low-energy physics of the system; $G$ is some universal function of $eV_{dc}/T_K$. We demonstrate that the dot out of equilibrium is also characterized by a universal behavior: conductance $G$ depends on the ac field only through two dimensionless parameters, which are the frequency $ω$ and the amplitude of the ac perturbation, both divided by $T_K$. We find analytically the large- and small-frequency asymptotes of the universal dependence of $G$ on these parameters. The obtained results allow us to predict the behavior of the conductance in the crossover regime $\hbarω\sim T_K$.

Finite-element theory of transport in ferromagnet-normal metal systems

We formulate a theory of spin dependent transport of an electronic circuit involving ferromagnetic elements with non-collinear magnetizations which is based on the conservation of spin and charge current. The theory considerably simplifies the calculation of the transport properties of complicated ferromagnet-normal metal systems. We illustrate the theory by considering a novel three terminal device.

Resonant Tunneling through Linear Arrays of Quantum Dots

We theoretically investigate resonant tunneling through a linear array of quantum dots with subsequent tunnel coupling. We consider two limiting cases: (i) strong Coulomb blockade, where only one extra electron can be present in the array (ii) limit of almost non-interacting electrons. We develop a density matrix description that incorporates the coupling of the dots to reservoirs. We analyze in detail the dependence of the stationary current on the electron energies, tunnel matrix elements and rates, and on the number of dots. We describe interaction and localization effects on the resonant current. We analyze the applicability of the approximation of independent conduction channels. We find that this approximation is not valid when at least one of the tunnel rates to the leads is comparable to the energy splitting of the states in the array. In this case the interference of conduction processes through different channels suppresses the current.

Suppression of Kondo effect in a quantum dot by external irradiation

We demonstrate that the external irradiation brings decoherence in the spin states of the quantum dot. This effect cuts off the Kondo anomaly in conductance even at zero temperature. We evaluate the dependence of the DC conductance in the Kondo regime on the power of irradiation, this dependence being determined by the decoherence.

Non-equilibrium spin accumulation in ferromagnetic single-electron transistors

We study transport in ferromagnetic single-electron transistors. The non- equilibrium spin accumulation on the island caused by a finite current through the system is described by a generalized theory of the Coulomb blockade. It enhances the tunnel magnetoresistance and has a drastic effect on the time- dependent transport properties. A transient decay of the spin accumulation may reverse the electric current on time scales of the order of the spin-flip relaxation time. This can be used as an experimental signature of the non- equilibrium spin accumulation.

Spin-accumulation in small ferromagnetic double barrier junctions

The non-equilibrium spin accumulation in ferromagnetic double barrier junctions is shown to govern the transport in small structures. Transport properties of such systems are described by a generalization of the theory of the Coulomb blockade. The spin accumulation enhances the magnetoresistance. The transient non-linear transport properties are predicted to provide a unique experimental evidence of the spin-accumulation in the form of a reversed current on time scales of the order of the spin-flip relaxation time.

Density of States and Energy Gap in Andreev Billiards

We present numerical results for the local density of states in semiclassical Andreev billiards. We show that the energy gap near the Fermi energy develops in a chaotic billiard. Using the same method no gap is found in similar square and circular billiards.

Reentrant behavior in the superconducting phase-dependent resistance of a disordered 2-dimensional electron gas

We have investigated the bias-voltage dependence of the phase-dependent differential resistance of a disordered T-shaped 2-dimensional electron gas coupled to two superconducting terminals. The resistance oscillations first increase upon lowering the energy. For bias voltages below the Thouless energy, the resistance oscillations are suppressed and disappear almost completely at zero bias voltage. We find a qualitative agreement with the calculated reentrant behavior of the resistance and discuss quantitative deviations.
