Deviation of trajectories in nonrelativistic and relativistic cases and Shirokov effect

We compare the deviations of circular orbits in the nonrelativistic and relativistic cases. General solutions of the deviation equations are obtained. We find the potentials for the nonrelativistic case and the metric components in general relativity for which trajectories close to circular ones are closed curves. Explicit expressions for the pericenter shift of an orbit close to a circular one in a static spherically symmetric spacetime are obtained. Estimates of the cosmological constant effect on the orbit pericenter shift are given. Finally, we find the spherically symmetric metric in which the Shirokov effect is absent.

On phase transitions during collisions near the horizon of black holes

During particle collisions in the vicinity of the horizon of black holes, it is possible to achieve energies and temperatures corresponding to phase transitions in particle physics. It is shown that the sizes of the regions of the new phase are of the order of the Compton length for the corresponding mass scale. The lifetime is also on the order of the Compton time. It is shown that the inverse influence of the energy density in the electro-weak phase transition in collisions on the space-time metric can be neglected.

Can the energy of a particle be negative in the absence of external fields?

We study the question of conditions for the existence of negative-energy states of particles in the absence of external fields in inertial and noninertial frames of reference. We show that in the nonrelativistic case in noninertial reference frames, there always exist domains where the energy of particles is negative. We also show that in the relativistic case, the existence of negative-energy states of point particles does not lead to violations of the energy dominance condition. We consider conditions for the appearance of negative and zero energies of particles in the Milne universe and Rindler space-time.

Particles of negative and zero energy in black holes and cosmological models

Particles with negative energies are considered for three different cases: inside of horizon of Schwarzschild black hole, Milne's coordinates in flat Minkowski space-time (Milne's universe using nonsynchronous coordinates) and in cosmological Gödel model of the rotating universe. It is shown that differently from the Gödel model with nondiagonal term where it occurs that negative energies are impossible they are present in all other cases considered in the paper. Particles with zero energy are also possible in first two cases.

Particle decay, Oberth effect and a relativistic rocket in the Schwarzschild background

We relate the known Oberth effect and the nonrelativistic analogue of the Penrose process. When a particle decays to two fragments, we derive the conditions on the angles under which debris can come out for such a process to occur. We also consider the decay and the Oberth effect in the relativistic case, when a particle moves in the background of the Schwarzschild black hole. This models the process when a rocket ejects fuel. Different scenarios are analyzed depending on what data are fixed. The efficiency of the process is found, in particular, near the horizon and for a photon rocket (when the ejected particle is massless). We prove directly that the most efficient process occurs when fuel is ejected along the rocket trajectory. When this occurs on the horizon, the efficiency reaches 100% for a photon rocket. We compare in two ways how a rocket can reverse its direction of motion to a black hole near the event horizon by restoring the initial energy-to-mass ratio: (i) by a single ejection or (ii) in the two-step process when it stops and moves back afterwards. For a nonphotonic rocket, in case (ii) a larger mass can be taken out from the vicinity of a horizon. For a photonic one, there is no difference between (i) and (ii) in this respect. We also consider briefly the scenario when a rocket hangs over a black hole due to continuous ejection of fuel. Then, the fuel mass decays exponentially with the proper time.

On phase transitions near black holes

It has been shown that temperatures near the horizon of rotating black holes can be about the phase transition temperature in the Standard Model with the Higgs boson. The distance from the horizon and gravitational and electromagnetic radiation emitted in collisions between particles have been numerically estimated.

Some effects of different coordinate systems in cosmology

The analysis of the dynamics of radial movement in different reference frames used in cosmology is made. Use of different frames leads to the difference in inertial forces resulting in different observable effects. The important effect is the appearance in the system different from the synchronous one of the acceleration proportional to the distance analogous to the action of the cosmological constant. Numerical estimate of the difference of this effective cosmological constant and the invariant constant in Einstein equations is made.

On the limiting energy of the collision of elementary particles close to horizon of the rotating black hole

Arguments are given for the conclusion that the energy of collision of two ultrarelativistic elementary particles due to gravitational radiation cannot exceed the Planck value. Comparison of the gravitational and electromagnetic radiation for charged particles close to the horizon of Kerr black hole is made. If for trans-Planckian energy the black hole can arise it is shown that the energy growth used in scattering for interaction of particles is still limited.

Gravitational radiation as the bremsstrahlung of superheavy particles in the early Universe

The number of superheavy particles with the mass of the Grand Unification scale with trans-Planckian energy created at the epoch of superheavy particle creation from vacuum by the gravitation of the expanding Universe is calculated. In later collisions of these particles gravitational radiation is radiated playing the role of bremsstrahlung for gravity. The effective background radiation of the Universe is evaluated.

Fifty years of the calculation of the density of particles created in the early Friedmann Universe

The problem of particle creation in cosmology concerning whether the results for the number of particles are infinite or finite is discussed for scalar and spinor particles in Friedmann expanding Universe. It is shown that the results are always finite if one puts in case of scalar particles creation a special term into the Lagrangian. Numerical estimates of the effect of particle creation are made. The role of creation of superheavy particles in cosmology is discussed.

Particle properties outside of the static limit in cosmology

It is shown that in the rest frame of the observer in expanding Universe states of particles with negative energy exist. The properties of such states are studied. The comparison with the case of negative energies of particles in black holes and rotating coordinates out of the static limit is made.

Particles with negative energies in nonrelativistic and relativistic cases

States of particles with negative energies are considered for the nonrelativistic and relativistic cases. In nonrelativistic case it is shown that the decays close to the attracting center can lead to the situation similar to the Penrose effect for rotating black hole when the energy of one of the fragments is larger than the energy of the initial body. This is known as the Oberth effect in the theory of the rocket movement. The realizations of the Penrose effect in the non-relativistic case in collisions near the attracting body and in the evaporation of stars from star clusters are indicated. In relativistic case similar to the well known Penrose process in the ergosphere of the rotating black hole it is shown that the same situation as in ergosphere of the black hole occurs in rotating coordinate system in Minkowski space-time out of the static limit due to existence of negative energies. In relativistic cases differently from the nonrelativistic ones the mass of the fragment can be larger than the mass of the decaying body. Negative energies for particles are possible in relativistic case in cosmology of the expanding space when the coordinate system is used with nondiagonal term in metrical tensor of the space-time. Friedmann metrics for three cases: open, close and quasieuclidian, are analyzed. The De Sitter space-time is shortly discussed.

Kinematic censorship as a constraint on allowed scenarios of high energy particle collisions

In recent years, it was found that the energy $E_{c.m.}$ in the centre of mass frame of two colliding particles can be unbounded near black holes. If collision occurs exactly on the horizon, $E_{c.m.}$ is formally infinite. However, in any physically reasonable situation this is impossible. We collect different scenarios of such a kind and show why in every act of collision $E_{c.m.}$ is indeed finite (although it can be as large as one likes). The factors preventing infinite energy are diverse: the necessity of infinite proper time, infinite tidal forces, potential barrier, etc. This prompts us to formulate a general principle according to which the limits in which $E_{c.m.}$ becomes infinite are never achieved. We call this the kinematic censorship (KC). Although by itself the validity of KC is quite natural, its application allows one to forbid scenarios of collisions predicting infinite $E_{c.m.}$ without going into details. The KC is valid even in the test particle approximation, so explanation of why $E_{c.m.}$ cannot be infinite, does not require references (common in literature) to the non-linear regime, backreaction, etc. The KC remains valid not only for free moving particles but also if particles experience the action of a finite force. For an individual particle, we consider a light-like continuous limit of a time-like trajectory in which the effective mass turns into zero. We show that it cannot be accelerated to an infinite energy during a finite proper time under the action of such a force. As an example, we consider dynamics of a scalar particle interacting with a background scalar field.

Static limit and Penrose effect in rotating reference frames

We show that effects similar to those for a rotating black hole arise for an observer using a uniformly rotating reference frame in a flat space-time: a surface appears such that no body can be stationary beyond this surface, while the particle energy can be either zero or negative. Beyond this surface, which is similar to the static limit for a rotating black hole, an effect similar to the Penrose effect is possible. We consider the example where one of the fragments of a particle that has decayed into two particles beyond the static limit flies into the rotating reference frame inside the static limit and has an energy greater than the original particle energy. We obtain constraints on the relative velocity of the decay products during the Penrose process in the rotating reference frame. We consider the problem of defining energy in a noninertial reference frame. For a uniformly rotating reference frame, we consider the states of particles with minimum energy and show the relation of this quantity to the radiation frequency shift of the rotating body due to the transverse Doppler effect.

Regular frames and particle's rotation near a black hole

We consider a particle moving towards a rotating black hole. We are interested in the number of its revolution $n$ around a black hole. In our previous work (Pavlov and Zaslavskii in Gen Relativ Gravit 50: 14, 2018. arXiv:1707.02860) we considered this issue in the Boyer-Lindquist type of coordinates with a subsequent procedure of subtraction. Now, we reconsider this issue using from the very beginning the frames regular on the horizon. For a nonextremal black hole, regularity of a coordinate frame leads to the finiteness of a number of revolutions around a black hole without a subtraction procedure. Meanwhile, for extremal black holes comparison of $n$ calculated in the regular frame with some subtraction procedures used by us earlier shows that the results can be different.

Back reaction of the gravitational radiation on the metric of spacetime

The problem of back reaction of the gravitational radiation of the two merging black holes on the metric of the spacetime is investigated. It is shown for some models that large energy density of the gravitational waves close to the merger can lead to the disappearance of the visible accretion disc of the merged pair of black holes.

Number of revolutions of a particle around a black hole: Is it infinite or finite?

We consider a particle falling into a rotating black hole. Such a particle makes an infinite number of revolutions $n$ from the viewpoint of a remote observer who uses the Boyer-Lindquist type of coordinates. We examine the behavior of $n$ when it is measured with respect to a local reference frame that also rotates due to dragging effect of spacetime. The crucial point consists here in the observation that for a nonextremal black hole, the leading contributions to $n$ from a particle itself and the reference frame have the same form being in fact universal, so that divergences mutually cancel. As a result, the relative number of revolutions turns out to be finite. For the extremal black hole this is not so, $n$ can be infinite. Different choices of the local reference frame are considered, the results turn out to be the same qualitatively. For illustration, we discuss two explicit examples - rotation in the flat spacetime and in the Kerr metric.

Comparison of particle properties in Kerr metric and in rotating coordinates

Properties of particles in Kerr metric are compared with properties of particles in rotating coordinates in Minkowski space-time. It is shown that particles with negative and zero energies existing in the ergosphere of the rotating black hole also exist in the region out of the static limit in rotating coordinates in Minkowski space-time. Some similarities like the Penrose process and differences in both cases are analyzed.
