Theory for Time-Resolved Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Time-resolved measurements of materials provide a wealth of information on quasiparticle dynamics, and have been the focus of optical studies for decades. In this paper, we develop a theory for explicitly evaluating time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (tr-RIXS). We apply the theory to a non-interacting electronic system and reveal the particle-hole spectrum and its evolution during the pump pulse. With a high-frequency pump, the frequency and amplitude dependence analysis of the spectra agrees well with the steady-state assumptions and Floquet excitations. When the pump frequency is low, the spectrum extracts real-time dynamics of the particle-hole continuum in momentum space. These results verify the correctness of our theory and demonstrate the breadth of physical problems that tr-RIXS could shed light on.

Underwater Transmission of High-dimensional Twisted Photons over 55 Meters

As an emerging channel resource for modern optics, big data, internet traffic and quantum technologies, twisted photons carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have been extended their applicable boundary in different media, such as optical fiber and atmosphere. Due to the extreme condition of loss and pressure, underwater transmission of twisted photons has not been well investigated yet. Especially, single-photon tests were all limited at a level of a few meters, and it is in practice unclear what will happen for longer transmission distances. Here we experimentally demonstrate the transmission of single-photon twisted light over an underwater channel up to 55 meters, which reach a distance allowing potential real applications. For different order OAM states and their superposition, a good preservation of modal structure and topological charge are observed. Our results for the first time reveal the real transmission performance of twisted photons in a long-distance regime, representing a step further towards OAM-based underwater quantum communication.

Photonic Newton's Cradle for Remote Energy Transport

Energy transport is of central importance in understanding a wide variety of transitions of physical states in nature. Recently, the coherence and noise have been identified for their existence and key roles in energy transport processes, for instance, in a photosynthesis complex, DNA, and odor sensing etc, of which one may have to reveal the inner mechanics in the quantum regime. Here we present an analog of Newton's cradle by manipulating a boundary-controlled chain on a photonic chip. Long-range interactions can be mediated by a long chain composed of 21 strongly coupled sites, where single-photon excitations are transferred between two remote sites via simultaneous control of inter-site weak and strong couplings. We observe a high retrieval efficiency in both uniform and defect-doped chain structures. Our results may offer a flexible approach to Hamiltonian engineering beyond geometric limitation, enabling the design and construction of quantum simulators on demand.

V-Fuzz: Vulnerability-Oriented Evolutionary Fuzzing

Fuzzing is a technique of finding bugs by executing a software recurrently with a large number of abnormal inputs. Most of the existing fuzzers consider all parts of a software equally, and pay too much attention on how to improve the code coverage. It is inefficient as the vulnerable code only takes a tiny fraction of the entire code. In this paper, we design and implement a vulnerability-oriented evolutionary fuzzing prototype named V-Fuzz, which aims to find bugs efficiently and quickly in a limited time. V-Fuzz consists of two main components: a neural network-based vulnerability prediction model and a vulnerability-oriented evolutionary fuzzer. Given a binary program to V-Fuzz, the vulnerability prediction model will give a prior estimation on which parts of the software are more likely to be vulnerable. Then, the fuzzer leverages an evolutionary algorithm to generate inputs which tend to arrive at the vulnerable locations, guided by the vulnerability prediction result. Experimental results demonstrate that V-Fuzz can find bugs more efficiently than state-of-the-art fuzzers. Moreover, V-Fuzz has discovered 10 CVEs, and 3 of them are newly discovered. We reported the new CVEs, and they have been confirmed and fixed.

Mapping Twisted Light into and out of a Photonic Chip

Twisted light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) provides an additional degree of freedom for modern optics and an emerging resource for both classical and quantum information technologies. Its inherently infinite dimensions can potentially be exploited by using mode multiplexing to enhance data capacity for sustaining the unprecedented growth in big data and internet traffic, and can be encoded to build large-scale quantum computing machines in high-dimensional Hilbert space. While the emission of twisted light from the surface of integrated devices to free space has been widely investigated, the transmission and processing inside a photonic chip remain to be addressed. Here, we present the first laser-direct-written waveguide being capable of supporting OAM modes and experimentally demonstrate a faithful mapping of twisted light into and out of a photonic chip. The states OAM$_{0}$, OAM$_{-1}$, OAM$_{+1}$ and their superpositions can transmit through the photonic chip with a total efficiency up to 60% with minimal crosstalk. In addition, we present the transmission of quantum twisted light states of single photons and measure the output states with single-photon imaging. Our results may add OAM as a new degree of freedom to be transmitted and manipulated in a photonic chip for high-capacity communication and high-dimensional quantum information processing.

Transmission of Photonic Polarization States through 55-meter Water: Towards Air-to-sea Quantum Communication

Quantum communication has been rapidly developed due to its unconditional security and successfully implemented through optical fibers and free-space air in experiment. To build a complete quantum communication network involving satellites in space and submersibles in ocean, underwater quantum channel has been investigated in both theory and experiment. However, the question of whether the polarization encoded qubit can survive through a long-distance and high-loss underwater channel, which is considered as the restricted area for satellite-borne radio waves, still remains. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the transmission of blue-green photonic polarization states through 55-meter-long water. We prepare six universal quantum states at single photon level and observe their faithful transmission in a large marine test platform. We obtain the complete information of the channel by quantum process tomography. The distance demonstrated in this work reaches a region allowing potential real applications, representing a step further towards air-to-sea quantum communication.

Spanning trees with at most 4 leaves in $K_{1,5}-$free graphs

In 2009, Kyaw proved that every $n$-vertex connected $K_{1,4}$-free graph $G$ with $σ_4(G)\geq n-1$ contains a spanning tree with at most $3$ leaves. In this paper, we prove an analogue of Kyaw's result for connected $K_{1,5}$-free graphs. We show that every $n$-vertex connected $K_{1,5}$-free graph $G$ with $σ_5(G)\geq n-1$ contains a spanning tree with at most $4$ leaves. Moreover, the degree sum condition `$σ_5(G)\geq n-1$' is best possible.

Integrated Server for Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution Network

Quantum key distribution (QKD), harnessing quantum physics and optoelectronics, may promise unconditionally secure information exchange in theory. Recently, theoretical and experimental advances in measurement-device-independent (MDI-) QKD have successfully closed the physical backdoor in detection terminals. However, the issues of scalability, stability, cost and loss prevent QKD systems from widespread application in practice. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a solution to build a star-topology quantum access network with an integrated server. By using femtosecond laser direct writing technique, we construct integrated circuits for all the elements of Bell state analyzer together and are able to integrate several such analyzers on single photonic chip. The measured high-visibility Bell state analysis suggests integrated server a promising platform for the practical application of MDI-QKD network.

Resilient Distributed Estimation: Sensor Attacks

This paper studies multi-agent distributed estimation under sensor attacks. Individual agents make sensor measurements of an unknown parameter belonging to a compact set, and, at every time step, a fraction of the agents' sensor measurements may fall under attack and take arbitrary values. We present the Saturated Innovation Update ($\mathcal{SIU}$) algorithm for distributed estimation resilient to sensor attacks. Under the iterative $\mathcal{SIU}$ algorithm, if less than one half of the agent sensors fall under attack, then, all of the agents' estimates converge at a polynomial rate (with respect to the number of iterations) to the true parameter. The resilience of $\mathcal{SIU}$ to sensor attacks does not depend on the topology of the inter-agent communication network, as long as it remains connected. We demonstrate the performance of $\mathcal{SIU}$ with numerical examples.

The Internet of Things: Secure Distributed Inference

The growth in the number of devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) poses major challenges in security. The integrity and trustworthiness of data and data analytics are increasingly important concerns in IoT applications. These are compounded by the highly distributed nature of IoT devices, making it infeasible to prevent attacks and intrusions on all data sources. Adversaries may hijack devices and compromise their data. As a result, reactive countermeasures, such as intrusion detection and resilient analytics, become vital components of security. This paper overviews algorithms for secure distributed inference in IoT.

SkyLens: Visual Analysis of Skyline on Multi-dimensional Data

Skyline queries have wide-ranging applications in fields that involve multi-criteria decision making, including tourism, retail industry, and human resources. By automatically removing incompetent candidates, skyline queries allow users to focus on a subset of superior data items (i.e., the skyline), thus reducing the decision-making overhead. However, users are still required to interpret and compare these superior items manually before making a successful choice. This task is challenging because of two issues. First, people usually have fuzzy, unstable, and inconsistent preferences when presented with multiple candidates. Second, skyline queries do not reveal the reasons for the superiority of certain skyline points in a multi-dimensional space. To address these issues, we propose SkyLens, a visual analytic system aiming at revealing the superiority of skyline points from different perspectives and at different scales to aid users in their decision making. Two scenarios demonstrate the usefulness of SkyLens on two datasets with a dozen of attributes. A qualitative study is also conducted to show that users can efficiently accomplish skyline understanding and comparison tasks with SkyLens.

Resilient Distributed Estimation Through Adversary Detection

This paper studies resilient multi-agent distributed estimation of an unknown vector parameter when a subset of the agents is adversarial. We present and analyze a Flag Raising Distributed Estimator ($\mathcal{FRDE}$) that allows the agents under attack to perform accurate parameter estimation and detect the adversarial agents. The $\mathcal{FRDE}$ algorithm is a consensus+innovations estimator in which agents combine estimates of neighboring agents (consensus) with local sensing information (innovations). We establish that, under $\mathcal{FRDE}$, either the uncompromised agents' estimates are almost surely consistent or the uncompromised agents detect compromised agents if and only if the network of uncompromised agents is connected and globally observable. Numerical examples illustrate the performance of $\mathcal{FRDE}$.

Reconfigurable optomechanical circulator and directional amplifier

Non-reciprocal devices, which allow the non-reciprocal signal routing, serve as the fundamental elements in photonic and microwave circuits and are crucial in both classical and quantum information processing. The radiation-pressure-induced coupling between light and mechanical motion in traveling wave resonators has been exploited to break the Lorentz reciprocity, realizing non-reciprocal devices without magnetic materials. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a reconfigurable nonreciprocal device with alternative functions of either a circulator or a directional amplifier via the optomechanically induced coherent photon-phonon conversion or gain. The demonstrated device exhibits considerable flexibility and offers exciting opportunities for combining reconfigurability, non-reciprocity and active properties in single photonic structures, which can also be generalized to microwave as well as acoustic circuits.

Simplify proposal for realizing multiqubit tunable phase gate in circuit QED

We propose a scheme to realize a multiqubit tunable phase gate in a circuit QED setup where two resonators, each coupling with a qudit, are interconnected to a common qudit (d=4). In this proposal, only two levels of each qudit serve as the logical states and the other two levels are used for the gate realization. The proposal is efficient and simple because only a classical microwave pulse is needed, no matter how many qudits are involved, which significantly reduces experimental difficulty. In a nonresonant case, the tunable phase gate can be achieved readily, while under the resonant condition, a π-phase gate can be realized after a full cycle of Rabi oscillation where the gate speed is rather fast due to the resonant interaction. We have shown that the resulting effective dynamics allows for the creation of a high-fidelity phase gate. The influence of various decoherence processes such as the decay of the resonator mode and the relaxation of the qudits is investigated. Moreover, the proposed scheme can be easily generalized to realize N-qubit phase gate.

Commissioning of te China-ADS injector-I testing facility

The 10 MeV accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) Injector-I test stand at Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) is a testing facility dedicated to demonstrate one of the two injector design schemes [Injector Scheme-I, which works at 325 MHz], for the ADS project in China. The Injector adopted a four vane copper structure RFQ with output energy of 3.2 MeV and a superconducting (SC) section accommodating fourteen \b{eta}g=0.12 single spoke cavities, fourteen SC solenoids and fourteen cold BPMs. The ion source was installed since April of 2014, periods of commissioning are regularly scheduled between installation phases of the rest of the injector. Continuous wave (CW) beam was shooting through the injector and 10 MeV CW proton beam with average beam current around 2 mA was obtained recently. This contribution describe the results achieved so far and the difficulties encountered in CW commissioning.

Optimal Attack Strategies Subject to Detection Constraints Against Cyber-Physical Systems

This paper studies an attacker against a cyber-physical system (CPS) whose goal is to move the state of a CPS to a target state while ensuring that his or her probability of being detected does not exceed a given bound. The attacker's probability of being detected is related to the nonnegative bias induced by his or her attack on the CPS' detection statistic. We formulate a linear quadratic cost function that captures the attacker's control goal and establish constraints on the induced bias that reflect the attacker's detection-avoidance objectives. When the attacker is constrained to be detected at the false-alarm rate of the detector, we show that the optimal attack strategy reduces to a linear feedback of the attacker's state estimate. In the case that the attacker's bias is upper bounded by a positive constant, we provide two algorithms -- an optimal algorithm and a sub-optimal, less computationally intensive algorithm -- to find suitable attack sequences. Finally, we illustrate our attack strategies in numerical examples based on a remotely-controlled helicopter under attack.

Belitskii's canonical forms of linear dynamical systems

In the note, all indecomposable canonical forms of linear systems with dimension less than or equal to $4$ are determined based on Belitskii's algorithm. As an application, an effective way to calculate dimensions of equivalence classes of linear systems is given by using Belitskii's canonical forms.

Twisted solutions to a simplified Ericksen-Leslie equation

In this article we construct global solutions to a simplified Ericksen-Leslie system on $\mathbb{R}^3$. The constructed solutions are twisted and periodic along the $x_3$-axis with period $d = 2π\big/ μ$. Here $μ> 0$ is the twist rate. $d$ is the distance between two planes which are parallel to the $x_1x_2$-plane. Liquid crystal material is placed in the region enclosed by these two planes. Given a well-prepared initial data, our solutions exist classically for all $t \in [0, \infty)$. However these solutions become singular at all points on the $x_3$-axis and escape into third dimension exponentially while $t \rightarrow \infty$. An optimal blow up rate is also obtained.
