Ultrafast electron vortex produced by a grating made of light

The generation of vortex matter waves carrying quantized orbital angular momentum is challenging and relies heavily on the material nanofabrication methods due to their extremely small de-Broglie wavelengths. Here, we introduce an all-optical method for generating an electron vortex by diffraction through a grating made of light. We realize the orbital angular momentum transfer between free electrons and photons by stimulated Compton scattering. The transferred angular momentum quantum number can be freely tuned. The method can be generalized to a broad range of charged particles, neutral atoms, and molecules of diverse masses. Our results open up novel opportunities for applications in free electron lasers and ultrafast electron microscopy by utilizing the orbital angular momentum degree of freedom of free electrons.

Dynamical phase evolution of Coulomb-focused electrons in strong-field ionization probed by a standing light wave

We investigate the dynamical phase evolution of Coulomb-focused electrons in strong-field ionization. We diffract the electrons with an ultrashort standing light wave to track their time-dependent phase. Our findings show that low-energy electrons exhibit a unique chromosome-shaped diffraction pattern, distinct from higher-energy electrons. Our numerical model quantitatively reproduces the experimental results, confirming this pattern maps the electron's time-dependent phase evolution as it escapes from a Coulomb potential. Our pulsed diffraction grating technique offers a new way to sense an electron's quantum phase without interfering its release mechanism.

Complexity Aversion

This paper proposes a model of decision-making under uncertainty in which an agent is constrained in her cognitive ability to consider complex acts. We identify the complexity of an act according to the corresponding partition of state space. The agent ranks acts according to the expected utility net of complexity cost. A key feature of this model is that the agent is able to update her complexity cost function after the arrival of new information. The main result characterizes axiomatically an updating rule for complexity cost function, the Minimal Complexity Aversion representation. According to this rule, the agent measures the complexity cost of an act conditional on the new information by using the cost of another act that gives exactly the same partition of the event but with the lowest ex-ante cost.

Unleashing the Power of Self-Supervised Image Denoising: A Comprehensive Review

The advent of deep learning has brought a revolutionary transformation to image denoising techniques. However, the persistent challenge of acquiring noise-clean pairs for supervised methods in real-world scenarios remains formidable, necessitating the exploration of more practical self-supervised image denoising. This paper focuses on self-supervised image denoising methods that offer effective solutions to address this challenge. Our comprehensive review thoroughly analyzes the latest advancements in self-supervised image denoising approaches, categorizing them into three distinct classes: General methods, Blind Spot Network (BSN)-based methods, and Transformer-based methods. For each class, we provide a concise theoretical analysis along with their practical applications. To assess the effectiveness of these methods, we present both quantitative and qualitative experimental results on various datasets, utilizing classical algorithms as benchmarks. Additionally, we critically discuss the current limitations of these methods and propose promising directions for future research. By offering a detailed overview of recent developments in self-supervised image denoising, this review serves as an invaluable resource for researchers and practitioners in the field, facilitating a deeper understanding of this emerging domain and inspiring further advancements.

Ferromagnetism of $^3$He Films in the Low Field Limit

We provide evidence for a finite temperature ferromagnetic transition in 2-dimensions as $H \to 0$ in thin films of $^3$He on graphite, a model system for the study of two-dimensional magnetism. We perform pulsed and CW NMR experiments at fields of 0.03 - 0.48 mT on $^3$He at areal densities of 20.5 - 24.2 atoms/nm$^2$. At these densities, the second layer of $^3$He has a strongly ferromagnetic tendency. With decreasing temperature, we find a rapid onset of magnetization that becomes independent of the applied field at temperatures in the vicinity of 1 mK. Both the dipolar field and the NMR linewidth grow rapidly as well, which is consistent with a large (order unity) polarization of the $^3$He spins.
