Does VLN Pretraining Work with Nonsensical or Irrelevant Instructions?

Data augmentation via back-translation is common when pretraining Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) models, even though the generated instructions are noisy. But: does that noise matter? We find that nonsensical or irrelevant language instructions during pretraining can have little effect on downstream performance for both HAMT and VLN-BERT on R2R, and is still better than only using clean, human data. To underscore these results, we concoct an efficient augmentation method, Unigram + Object, which generates nonsensical instructions that nonetheless improve downstream performance. Our findings suggest that what matters for VLN R2R pretraining is the quantity of visual trajectories, not the quality of instructions.

PKE-RRT: Efficient Multi-Goal Path Finding Algorithm Driven by Multi-Task Learning Model

Multi-goal path finding (MGPF) aims to find a closed and collision-free path to visit a sequence of goals orderly. As a physical travelling salesman problem, an undirected complete graph with accurate weights is crucial for determining the visiting order. Lack of prior knowledge of local paths between vertices poses challenges in meeting the optimality and efficiency requirements of algorithms. In this study, a multi-task learning model designated Prior Knowledge Extraction (PKE), is designed to estimate the local path length between pairwise vertices as the weights of the graph. Simultaneously, a promising region and a guideline are predicted as heuristics for the path-finding process. Utilizing the outputs of the PKE model, a variant of Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) is proposed known as PKE-RRT. It effectively tackles the MGPF problem by a local planner incorporating a prioritized visiting order, which is obtained from the complete graph. Furthermore, the predicted region and guideline facilitate efficient exploration of the tree structure, enabling the algorithm to rapidly provide a sub-optimal solution. Extensive numerical experiments demonstrate the outstanding performance of the PKE-RRT for the MGPF problem with a different number of goals, in terms of calculation time, path cost, sample number, and success rate.

End-to-end Rain Streak Removal with RAW Images

In this work we address the problem of rain streak removal with RAW images. The general approach is firstly processing RAW data into RGB images and removing rain streak with RGB images. Actually the original information of rain in RAW images is affected by image signal processing (ISP) pipelines including none-linear algorithms, unexpected noise, artifacts and so on. It gains more benefit to directly remove rain in RAW data before being processed into RGB format. To solve this problem, we propose a joint solution for rain removal and RAW processing to obtain clean color images from rainy RAW image. To be specific, we generate rainy RAW data by converting color rain streak into RAW space and design simple but efficient RAW processing algorithms to synthesize both rainy and clean color images. The rainy color images are used as reference to help color corrections. Different backbones show that our method conduct a better result compared with several other state-of-the-art deraining methods focused on color image. In addition, the proposed network generalizes well to other cameras beyond our selected RAW dataset. Finally, we give the result tested on images processed by different ISP pipelines to show the generalization performance of our model is better compared with methods on color images.

Persistence of Monoclinic Crystal Structure in Three-Dimensional Second-Order Topological Insulator Candidate 1T'-MoTe2 Thin Flake without Structural Phase transition

A van der Waals material, MoTe2 with a monoclinic 1T' crystal structure is a candidate for three-dimensional (3D) second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) hosting gapless hinge states and insulating surface states. However, due to the temperature-induced structural phase transition, the monoclinic 1T' structure of MoTe2 would be transformed into the orthorhombic Td structure as the temperature is lowered, which hinders the experimental verification and the electronic applications of the predicted SOTI state at low temperatures. Here, we present systematic Raman spectroscopy studies of the exfoliated MoTe2 thin flakes with variable thicknesses at different temperatures. As a spectroscopic signature of the orthorhombic Td structure of MoTe2, the out-of-plane vibration mode D at ~ 125 cm-1 is always visible below a certain temperature in the multilayer flakes thicker than ~ 27.7 nm, but vanishes in the temperature range from 80 K to 320 K when the flake thickness becomes lower than ~ 19.5 nm. The absence of the out-of-plane vibration mode D in the Raman spectra here demonstrates not only the disappearance of the monoclinic-to-orthorhombic phase transition but also the persistence of the monoclinic 1T' structure in the MoTe2 thin flakes thinner than ~ 19.5 nm at low temperatures down to 80 K, which may be caused by the high enough density of the holes introduced during the gold-enhanced exfoliation process and exposure to air. The MoTe2 thin flakes with the low-temperature monoclinic 1T' structure provide a material platform for realizing SOTI states in van der Waals materials at low temperatures, which paves the way for developing a new generation of electronic devices based on SOTIs.

Neural-Network-Driven Method for Optimal Path Planning via High-Accuracy Region Prediction

Sampling-based path planning algorithms suffer from heavy reliance on uniform sampling, which accounts for unreliable and time-consuming performance, especially in complex environments. Recently, neural-network-driven methods predict regions as sampling domains to realize a non-uniform sampling and reduce calculation time. However, the accuracy of region prediction hinders further improvement. We propose a sampling-based algorithm, abbreviated to Region Prediction Neural Network RRT* (RPNN-RRT*), to rapidly obtain the optimal path based on a high-accuracy region prediction. First, we implement a region prediction neural network (RPNN), to predict accurate regions for the RPNN-RRT*. A full-layer channel-wise attention module is employed to enhance the feature fusion in the concatenation between the encoder and decoder. Moreover, a three-level hierarchy loss is designed to learn the pixel-wise, map-wise, and patch-wise features. A dataset, named Complex Environment Motion Planning, is established to test the performance in complex environments. Ablation studies and test results show that a high accuracy of 89.13% is achieved by the RPNN for region prediction, compared with other region prediction models. In addition, the RPNN-RRT* performs in different complex scenarios, demonstrating significant and reliable superiority in terms of the calculation time, sampling efficiency, and success rate for optimal path planning.

S&Reg: End-to-End Learning-Based Model for Multi-Goal Path Planning Problem

In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end approach for solving the multi-goal path planning problem in obstacle environments. Our proposed model, called S&Reg, integrates multi-task learning networks with a TSP solver and a path planner to quickly compute a closed and feasible path visiting all goals. Specifically, the model first predicts promising regions that potentially contain the optimal paths connecting two goals as a segmentation task. Simultaneously, estimations for pairwise distances between goals are conducted as a regression task by the neural networks, while the results construct a symmetric weight matrix for the TSP solver. Leveraging the TSP result, the path planner efficiently explores feasible paths guided by promising regions. We extensively evaluate the S&Reg model through simulations and compare it with the other sampling-based algorithms. The results demonstrate that our proposed model achieves superior performance in respect of computation time and solution cost, making it an effective solution for multi-goal path planning in obstacle environments. The proposed approach has the potential to be extended to other sampling-based algorithms for multi-goal path planning.

Twist-angle and thickness-ratio tuning of plasmon polaritons in twisted bilayer van der Waals films

Stacking bilayer structures is an efficient way to tune the topology of polaritons in in-plane anisotropic films, e.g., by leveraging the twist angle (TA). However, the effect of another geometric parameter, film thickness ratio (TR), on manipulating the plasmon topology in bilayers is elusive. Here, we fabricate bilayer structures of WTe2 films, which naturally host in-plane hyperbolic plasmons in the terahertz range. Plasmon topology is successfully modified by changing the TR and TA synergistically, manifested by the extinction spectra of unpatterned films and the polarization dependence of the plasmon intensity measured in skew ribbon arrays. Such TR- and TA-tunable topological transitions can be well explained based on the effective sheet optical conductivity by adding up those of the two films. Our study demonstrates TR as another degree of freedom for the manipulation of plasmonic topology in nanophotonics, exhibiting promising applications in bio-sensing, heat transfer and the enhancement of spontaneous emission.

TextSLAM: Visual SLAM with Semantic Planar Text Features

We propose a novel visual SLAM method that integrates text objects tightly by treating them as semantic features via fully exploring their geometric and semantic prior. The text object is modeled as a texture-rich planar patch whose semantic meaning is extracted and updated on the fly for better data association. With the full exploration of locally planar characteristics and semantic meaning of text objects, the SLAM system becomes more accurate and robust even under challenging conditions such as image blurring, large viewpoint changes, and significant illumination variations (day and night). We tested our method in various scenes with the ground truth data. The results show that integrating texture features leads to a more superior SLAM system that can match images across day and night. The reconstructed semantic 3D text map could be useful for navigation and scene understanding in robotic and mixed reality applications. Our project page: https://github.com/SJTU-ViSYS/TextSLAM .

An Empirical Study on Real Bug Fixes from Solidity Smart Contract Projects

Smart contracts are pieces of code that reside inside the blockchains and can be triggered to execute any transaction when specifically predefined conditions are satisfied. Being commonly used for commercial transactions in blockchain makes the security of smart contracts particularly important. Over the last few years, we have seen a great deal of academic and practical interest in detecting and fixing the bugs in smart contracts written by Solidity. But little is known about the real bug fixes in Solidity smart contract projects. To understand the bug fixes and enrich the knowledge of bug fixes in real-world projects, we conduct an empirical study on historical bug fixes from 46 real-world Solidity smart contract projects in this paper. We provide a multi-faceted discussion and mainly explore the following four questions: File Type and Amount, Fix Complexity, Bug distribution, and Fix Patches. We distill four findings during the process to explore these four questions. Finally, based on these findings, we provide actionable implications to improve the current approaches to fixing bugs in Solidity smart contracts from three aspects: Automatic repair techniques, Analysis tools, and Solidity developers.

Dynamical interplay between superconductivity and charge-density-wave: a nonlinear terahertz study of coherently-driven 2H-NbSe2 and La2-xSrxCuO4

2H-NbSe2 is an archetypal system in which superconductivity and charge-density-wave (CDW) coexist and compete macroscopically with each other. In particular, this interplay also manifests in their dynamical fluctuations. As a result, the superconducting amplitude fluctuations (i.e. Higgs mode) is pushed below the quasiparticle continuum, allowing it to become a coherent excitation observable by Raman scattering. In the present study, we coherently drive the collective oscillations of the two orders and visualize their interplay in the driven states in the time domain. We find that both collective modes contribute to terahertz third harmonic generation (THG) and the THG signals interfere below Tc, leading to an anti-resonance of the integrated THG signal. The dynamical Ginzburg-Landau model suggests that around the anti-resonance a periodic energy transfer between the driven Higgs oscillations and the driven CDW oscillations is possible. In addition to 2H-NbSe2, we also studied an underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 (x ~ 0.12) driven beyond the perturbative regime of THG. A similar interference between two sources of THG is observed below Tc. While there might be additional sources of THG in these experiments, our results illustrate the roles of coupled modes in the terahertz THG process and the tantalizing possibility of coherent control via such couplings.

Exploring Representation-Level Augmentation for Code Search

Code search, which aims at retrieving the most relevant code fragment for a given natural language query, is a common activity in software development practice. Recently, contrastive learning is widely used in code search research, where many data augmentation approaches for source code (e.g., semantic-preserving program transformation) are proposed to learn better representations. However, these augmentations are at the raw-data level, which requires additional code analysis in the preprocessing stage and additional training costs in the training stage. In this paper, we explore augmentation methods that augment data (both code and query) at representation level which does not require additional data processing and training, and based on this we propose a general format of representation-level augmentation that unifies existing methods. Then, we propose three new augmentation methods (linear extrapolation, binary interpolation, and Gaussian scaling) based on the general format. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze the advantages of the proposed augmentation methods over traditional contrastive learning methods on code search. We experimentally evaluate the proposed representation-level augmentation methods with state-of-the-art code search models on a large-scale public dataset consisting of six programming languages. The experimental results show that our approach can consistently boost the performance of the studied code search models. Our source code is available at https://github.com/Alex-HaochenLi/RACS.

One-step exfoliation method for plasmonic activation of large-area 2D crystals

Advanced exfoliation techniques are crucial for exploring the intrinsic properties and applications of 2D materials. Though the recently discovered Au-enhanced exfoliation technique provides an effective strategy for preparation of large-scale 2D crystals, the high cost of gold hinders this method from being widely adopted in industrial applications. In addition, direct Au contact could significantly quench photoluminescence (PL) emission in 2D semiconductors. It is therefore crucial to find alternative metals that can replace gold to achieve efficient exfoliation of 2D materials. Here, we present a one-step Ag-assisted method that can efficiently exfoliate many large-area 2D monolayers, where the yield ratio is comparable to Au-enhanced exfoliation method. Differing from Au film, however, the surface roughness of as-prepared Ag films on SiO2/Si substrate is much higher, which facilitates the generation of surface plasmons resulting from the nanostructures formed on the rough Ag surface. More interestingly, the strong coupling between 2D semiconductor crystals (e.g. MoS2, MoSe2) and Ag film leads to a unique PL enhancement that has not been observed in other mechanical exfoliation techniques, which can be mainly attributed to enhanced light-matter interaction as a result of extended propagation of surface plasmonic polariton (SPP). Our work provides a lower-cost and universal Ag-assisted exfoliation method, while at the same offering enhanced SPP-matter interactions.

Composite Expectile Regression with Gene-environment Interaction

If error distribution has heteroscedasticity, it voliates the assumption of linear regression. Expectile regression is a powerful tool for estimating the conditional expectiles of a response variable in this setting. Since multiple levels of expectile regression modelhas been well studied, we propose composite expectile regression by combining different levels of expectile regression to improve the efficacy. In this paper, we study the sparse composite expectile regression under high dimensional setting. It is realized by implementing a coordinate descent algorithm. We also prove its selection and estimation consistency. Simulations are conducted to demonstrate its performance, which is comparable to or better than the alternatives. We apply the proposed method to analyze Lung adenocarcinoma(LUAD) real data set, investigating the G-E interaction.

Exfoliation of 2D van der Waals crystals in ultrahigh vacuum for interface engineering

Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their heterostructures have been intensively studied in recent years due to their potential applications in electronic, optoelectronic, and spintronic devices. Nonetheless, the realization of 2D heterostructures with atomically flat and clean interfaces remains challenging, especially for air-sensitive materials, which hinders the in-depth investigation of interface-induced phenomena and the fabrication of high-quality devices. Here, we circumvented this challenge by exfoliating 2D materials in an ultrahigh vacuum. Remarkably, ultraflat and clean substrate surfaces can assist the exfoliation of 2D materials, regardless of the substrate and 2D material, thus providing a universal method for the preparation of heterostructures with ideal interfaces. In addition, we studied the properties of two prototypical systems that cannot be achieved previously, including the electronic structure of monolayer phospherene and optical responses of transition metal dichalcogenides on different metal substrates. Our work paves the way to engineer rich interface-induced phenomena, such as proximity effects and moiré superlattices.

Towards Exploring the Code Reuse from Stack Overflow during Software Development

As one of the most well-known programmer Q&A websites, Stack Overflow (i.e., SO) is serving tens of thousands of developers every day. Previous work has shown that many developers reuse the code snippets on SO when they find an answer (from SO) that functionally matches the programming problem they encounter in their development activities. To study how programmers reuse code on SO during project development, we conduct a comprehensive empirical study. First, to capture the development activities of programmers, we collect 342,148 modified code snippets in commits from 793 open-source Java projects, and these modified code can reflect the programming problems encountered during development. We also collect the code snippets from 1,355,617 posts on SO. Then, we employ CCFinder to detect the code clone between the modified code from commits and the code from SO, and further analyze the code reuse when programmer solves a programming problem during development. We count the code reuse ratios of the modified code snippets in the commits of each project in different years, the results show that the average code reuse ratio is 6.32%, and the maximum is 8.38%. The code reuse ratio in project commits has increased year by year, and the proportion of code reuse in the newly established project is higher than that of old projects. We also find that some projects reuse the code snippets from many years ago. Additionally, we find that experienced developers seem to be more likely to reuse the knowledge on SO. Moreover, we find that the code reuse ratio in bug-related commits (6.67%) is slightly higher than that of in non-bug-related commits (6.59%). Furthermore, we also find that the code reuse ratio (14.44%) in Java class files that have undergone multiple modifications is more than double the overall code reuse ratio (6.32%).

Ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic coexisting ground states and exchange bias effects in $\bf{MnBi_4Te_7}$ and $\bf{MnBi_6Te_{10}}$

Natural superlattice structures $\rm{(MnBi_2Te_4)(Bi_2Te_3)}$$_n$ ($n$ = 1, 2,...), in which magnetic $\rm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ layers are separated by nonmagnetic $\rm{Bi_2Te_3}$ layers, hold band topology, magnetism and reduced interlayer coupling, providing a promising platform for the realization of exotic topological quantum states. However, their magnetism in the two-dimensional limit, which is crucial for further exploration of quantum phenomena, remains elusive. Here, complex ferromagnetic (FM)-antiferromagnetic (AFM) coexisting ground states that persist up to the 2-septuple layers (SLs) limit are observed and comprehensively investigated in $\rm{MnBi_4Te_7}$ ($n$ = 1) and $\rm{MnBi_6Te_{10}}$ ($n$ = 2). The ubiquitous Mn-Bi site mixing modifies or even changes the sign of the subtle inter-SL magnetic interactions, yielding a spatially inhomogeneous interlayer coupling. Further, a tunable exchange bias effect is observed in $\rm{(MnBi_2Te_4)(Bi_2Te_3)}$$_n$ ($n$ = 1, 2), arising from the coupling between the FM and AFM components in the ground state. Our work highlights a new approach toward the fine-tuning of magnetism and paves the way for further study of quantum phenomena in $\rm{(MnBi_2Te_4)(Bi_2Te_3)}$$_n$ ($n$ = 1, 2,...) as well as their magnetic applications.

Atomic-Scale Visualization of Chiral Charge Density Wave States and Their Reversible Transition

Chirality is essential for various amazing phenomena in life and matter. However, chirality and its switching in electronic superlattices, such as charge density wave(CDW) arrays, remain elusive. In this study, we characterize the chirality transition with atom-resolution imaging in a single-layer NbSe2 CDW pattern by technique of scanning tunneling microscopy. The atomic lattice of the CDW array is found continuous and intact although its chirality is switched. Several intermediate states are tracked by time-resolved imaging, revealing the fast and dynamic chirality transition. Importantly, the switching is reversibly realized with an external electric-field. Our findings unveil the delicate transition process of chiral CDW array in a 2D crystal down to the atomic scale and may be applicable for future nanoscale devices.

Strong light-matter interactions between gap plasmons and two-dimensional excitons at ambient condition in a deterministic way

Strong exciton-plasmon interaction between the layered two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors and gap plasmons shows a great potential to implement cavity quantum-electrodynamics in ambient condition. However, achieving a robust plasmon-exciton coupling with nanocavity is still very challenging, because the layer area is usually small with conventional approaches. Here, we report on a robust strong exciton-plasmon coupling between the gap mode of bowtie and the excitons in MoS$_2$ layers with gold-assisted mechanical exfoliation and the nondestructive wet transfer techniques for large-area layer. Benefiting from the ultrasmall mode volume and strong in-plane field, the estimated effective exciton number contributing to the coupling is largely reduced. With a corrected exciton transition dipole moment, the exciton numbers are extracted with 40 for the case of monolayer and 48 for 8 layers. Our work paves a way to realize the strong coupling with 2D materials with few excitons at room temperature.
