Enhancement of ferroelectric performance in PVDF:Fe3O4 nanocomposite based organic multiferroic tunnel junctions

We report on the fabrication of organic multiferroic tunnel junction (OMFTJ) based on an organic barrier of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF):Fe3O4 nanocomposite. By adding Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the PVDF barrier, we found that the ferroelectric properties of the OMFTJ are considerably improved compared to that with pure PVDF barrier. It can lead to a tunneling electroresistance (TER) of about 450% at 10K and 100% at room temperature (RT), which is much higher than that of the pure PVDF based device (70% at 10K and 7% at RT). OMFTJs based on the PVDF:Fe3O4 nanocomposite could open new functionalities in smart multiferroic devices via the interplay of the magnetism of nanoparticle with the ferroelectricity of the organic barrier.

Temperature dependence of transport mechanisms in organic multiferroic tunnel junctions

Organic multiferroic tunnel junctions (OMFTJs) with multi-resistance states have been proposed and drawn intensive interests due to their potential applications, for examples of memristor and spintronics based synapse devices. The ferroelectric control of spin-polarization at ferromagnet (FM)/ferroelectric organic (FE-Org) interface by electrically switching the ferroelectric polarization of the FE-Org has been recently realized. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the transport properties in OMFTJs, especially the interplay between the ferroelectric domain structure in the organic barrier and the spin-polarized electron tunneling through the barrier. Here, we report on a systematic study of the temperature dependent transport behavior in La0.6Sr0.4MnO3/PVDF/Co OMFTJs. It is found that the thermal fluctuation of the ferroelectric domains plays an important role on the transport properties. When T>120K, the opposite temperature dependence of resistance for in up and down ferroelectric polarization states results in a rapid diminishing of tunneling electroresistance (TER). These results contribute to the understanding of the transport properties for designing high performance OMFTJs for memristor and spintronics applications.

Interfacial Spin-Orbit Coupling: New Platform for Superconducting Spintronics

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a key interaction in spintronics, allowing an electrical control of spin or magnetization and, vice versa, a magnetic control of electrical current. However, recent advances have revealed much broader implications of SOC that is also central to the design of topological states, including topological insulators, skyrmions, and Majorana fermions, or to overcome the exclusion of two-dimensional ferro-magnetism expected from the Mermin-Wagner theorem. SOC and the resulting emergent interfacial spin-orbit fields are simply realized in junctions through structural inversion asymmetry, while the anisotropy in magnetoresistance (MR) allows for their experimental detection. Surprisingly, we demonstrate that an all-epitaxial ferromagnet/MgO/metal junction with only a negligible MR anisotropy undergoes a remarkable transformation below the superconducting transition temperature of the metal. The superconducting junction has a three orders of magnitude higher MR anisotropy and supports the formation of spin-triplet superconductivity, crucial for superconducting spintronics, and topologically-protected quantum computing. Our findings call for revisiting the role of SOC in other systems which, even when it seems negligible in the normal state, could have a profound influence on the superconducting response.

Universal transfer and stacking technique of van der Waals heterostructures for spintronics

The key to achieving high-quality van der Waals heterostructure devices made from various two-dimensional (2D) materials lies in the control over clean and flexible interfaces. However, existing transfer methods based on different mediators possess insufficiencies including the presence of residues, the unavailability of flexible interface engineering, and the selectivity towards materials and substrates since their adhesions differ considerably with the various preparation conditions, from chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth to mechanical exfoliation. In this paper, we introduce a more universal method using a prefabricated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film to transfer and stack 2D materials, whether they are prepared by CVD or exfoliation. This peel-off and drop-off technique promises an ideal interface of the materials without introducing contamination. In addition, the method exhibits a micron-scale spatial transfer accuracy and meets special experimental conditions such as the preparation of twisted graphene and the 2D/metal heterostructure construction. We illustrate the superiority of this method with a WSe2 vertical spin valve device, whose performance verifies the applicability and advantages of such a method for spintronics. Our PVA-assisted transfer process will promote the development of high-performance 2D-material-based devices.

A Sensing Contribution-based Two-layer Game for Channel Selection and Spectrum Access in Cognitive Radio Ad-hoc Networks

In cognitive radio (CR) networks, the secondary users (SUs) sense the spectrum licensed to the primary users (PUs) to identify and possibly transmit over temporarily unoccupied channels. Cooperative sensing was proposed to improve the sensing accuracy, but in heterogeneous scenarios SUs do not contribute equally to the cooperative sensing result because they experience different received PU signal quality at their sensors. In this paper, a two-layer coalitional game is developed for distributed sensing and access in multichannel CR ad hoc networks where the SUs' transmission opportunities are commensurate with their sensing contributions, thus fostering cooperation and eliminating free-riders. Numerical results show that the proposed two-layer game is computationally efficient and outperforms previously investigated collaborative sensing and spectrum access approaches for heterogeneous multichannel CR networks in terms of energy efficiency, throughput, SU fairness, and complexity. Moreover, it is demonstrated that this game is robust to changes in the network topology and the number of SUs in low-mobility scenarios. Finally, we propose a new physical-layer approach to distributing the network-level miss-detection (MD) constraints fairly among the interfering SUs for guaranteed PU protection and demonstrate the performance advantages of the AND-rule combining of spectrum sensing results for heterogeneous SUs.

Perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB multilayers with tunable interlayer exchange for synthetic ferrimagnets

A study of the multilayer system MgO/CoFeB(1.1nm)/Ta($t$)/CoFeB(0.8nm)/MgO is presented, where the two CoFeB layers are separated by a Ta interlayer of varying thickness $t$. The magnetization properties deduced from complementary techniques such as superconducting quantum interference magnetometry, ferromagnetic resonance frequency measurements and Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy can be tuned by changing the Ta thickness between $t$=0.25 nm, 0.5 nm and 0.75 nm. For $t$=0.5 nm, a ferromagnetic coupling is observed, whereas for t=0.75 nm, the antiferromagnetic coupling needed to construct a synthetic ferrimagnet is realized. In the later case, the shape of magnetic domain walls between two ferrimagnetic alignments or between a ferro- and a ferrimagnetic alignment is very different. This behavior can be interpreted as a result of the change in dipolar as well as interlayer exchange energy and domain wall pinning, which is an important conclusion for the realization of data storage devices based on synthetic ferri- and antiferromagnets.

Notes on Low-rank Matrix Factorization

Low-rank matrix factorization (MF) is an important technique in data science. The key idea of MF is that there exists latent structures in the data, by uncovering which we could obtain a compressed representation of the data. By factorizing an original matrix to low-rank matrices, MF provides a unified method for dimension reduction, clustering, and matrix completion. In this article we review several important variants of MF, including: Basic MF, Non-negative MF, Orthogonal non-negative MF. As can be told from their names, non-negative MF and orthogonal non-negative MF are variants of basic MF with non-negativity and/or orthogonality constraints. Such constraints are useful in specific senarios. In the first part of this article, we introduce, for each of these models, the application scenarios, the distinctive properties, and the optimizing method. By properly adapting MF, we can go beyond the problem of clustering and matrix completion. In the second part of this article, we will extend MF to sparse matrix compeletion, enhance matrix compeletion using various regularization methods, and make use of MF for (semi-)supervised learning by introducing latent space reinforcement and transformation. We will see that MF is not only a useful model but also as a flexible framework that is applicable for various prediction problems.

Adaptation to the Primary User CSI in Cognitive Radio Sensing and Access

In Cognitive Radio (CR) networks, multiple secondary network users (SUs) attempt to communicate over wide potential spectrum without causing significant interference to the Primary Users (PUs). A spectrum sensing algorithm is a critical component of any sensing strategy. Performance of conventional spectrum detection methods is severely limited when the average SNR of the fading channel between the PU transmitter and the SU sensor is low. Cooperative sensing and advanced detection techniques only partially remedy this problem. A key limitation of conventional approaches is that the sensing threshold is determined from the miss detection rate averaged over the fading distribution. In this paper, the threshold is adapted to the instantaneous PU-to-SU Channel State Information (CSI) under the prescribed collision probability constraint, and a novel sensing strategy design is proposed for overlay CR network where the instantaneous false alarm probability is incorporated into the belief update and the reward computation. It is demonstrated that the proposed sensing approach improves SU confidence, randomizes sensing decisions, and significantly improves SU network throughput while satisfying the collision probability constraint to the PUs in the low average PU-to-SU SNR region. Moreover, the proposed adaptive sensing strategy is robust to mismatched and correlated fading CSI and improves significantly on conventional cooperative sensing techniques. Finally, joint adaptation to PU channel gain and SU link CSI is explored to further improve CR throughput and reduce SU collisions.

Channel-Adaptive Sensing Strategy for Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc Networks

In Cognitive Radio (CR) ad hoc networks, secondary users (SU) attempt to utilize valuable spectral resources without causing significant interference to licensed primary users (PU). While there is a large body of research on spectrum opportunity detection, exploitation, and adaptive transmission in CR, most existing approaches focus only on avoiding PU activity when making sensing decisions. Since the myopic sensing strategy results in congestion and poor throughput, several collision-avoidance sensing approaches were investigated in the literature. However, they provide limited improvement. A channel-aware myopic sensing strategy that adapts the reward to the fading channel state information (CSI) of the SU link is proposed. This CSI varies over the CR spectrum and from one SU pair to another due to multipath and shadow fading, thus randomizing sensing decisions and increasing the network throughput. The proposed joint CSI adaptation at the medium access control (MAC) and physical layers provides large throughput gain over randomized sensing strategies and/or conventional adaptive transmission methods. The performance of the proposed CSI-aided sensing strategy is validated for practical network scenarios and demonstrated to be robust to CSI mismatch, sensing errors, and spatial channel correlation.

CSI-aided MAC with Multiuser Diversity for Cognitive Radio Networks

Cognitive Radio (CR) aims to increase the spectrum utilization by allowing secondary users (SU) to access unused licensed spectrum bands. To maximize the throughput given limited sensing capability, SUs need to strike a balance between sensing the channels that are not heavily used by primary users (PU) and avoiding collisions with other SUs. To randomize sensing decisions without resorting to multiuser sensing policies, it is proposed to exploit the spatially-variant fading channel conditions on different links by adapting the reward to the channel state information (CSI). Moreover, the proposed channel-adaptive policy favors links with high achievable transmission rate and thus further improves the network throughput.

Spin-Polarized Transient Electron Trapping in Phosphorus-doped Silicon

Experimental evidence of electron spin precession during travel through the phosphorus-doped Si channel of an all-electrical device simultaneously indicates two distinct processes: (i) short timescales (~50ps) due to purely conduction-band transport from injector to detector, and (ii) long timescales (~1ns) originating from delays associated with capture/re-emission in shallow impurity traps. The origin of this phenomenon, examined via temperature, voltage, and electron density dependence measurements, is established by means of comparison to a numerical model and is shown to reveal the participation of metastable excited states in the phosphorus impurity spectrum. This work therefore demonstrates the potential to make the study of macroscopic spin transport relevant to the quantum regime of individual spin interactions with impurities as envisioned for quantum information applications.

Reverse Schottky-Asymmetry Spin Current Detectors

By reversing the Schottky barrier-height asymmetry in hot-electron semiconductor-metal-semiconductor ballistic spin filtering spin detectors, we have achieved: 1. Demonstration of >50% spin polarization in silicon, resulting from elimination of the ferromagnet/silicon interface on the transport channel detector contact, and 2. Evidence of spin transport at temperatures as high as 260K, enabled by an increase of detector Schottky barrier height.
