A Prescriptive Dirichlet Power Allocation Policy with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Prescribing optimal operation based on the condition of the system and, thereby, potentially prolonging the remaining useful lifetime has a large potential for actively managing the availability, maintenance and costs of complex systems. Reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms are particularly suitable for this type of problems given their learning capabilities. A special case of a prescriptive operation is the power allocation task, which can be considered as a sequential allocation problem, where the action space is bounded by a simplex constraint. A general continuous action-space solution of such sequential allocation problems has still remained an open research question for RL algorithms. In continuous action-space, the standard Gaussian policy applied in reinforcement learning does not support simplex constraints, while the Gaussian-softmax policy introduces a bias during training. In this work, we propose the Dirichlet policy for continuous allocation tasks and analyze the bias and variance of its policy gradients. We demonstrate that the Dirichlet policy is bias-free and provides significantly faster convergence, better performance and better hyperparameters robustness over the Gaussian-softmax policy. Moreover, we demonstrate the applicability of the proposed algorithm on a prescriptive operation case, where we propose the Dirichlet power allocation policy and evaluate the performance on a case study of a set of multiple lithium-ion (Li-I) battery systems. The experimental results show the potential to prescribe optimal operation, improve the efficiency and sustainability of multi-power source systems.

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogen to ammonia in ionic liquids

Ammonia NH3 is an important raw material for nitrogen fertilizer production and is widely used in industry. It is also a carbon free renewable fuel and an excellent hydrogen storage material. Reaction conditions of traditional Haber Bosch process are very harsh although it supports most of todays NH3 production. Recently, electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction NRR has become one of the effective alternative methods to the traditional Haber Bosch process due to the advantages of mild operation conditions and almost no environmental pollutions. Ionic liquids ILs act as one of green solvents possess a lot of unique features and have shown excellent performance in electrocatalytic NRR process. In this review, we summarize fundamentals of the electrocatalytic NRR, the role of ILs in several typical electrocatalytic processes, and the possible role of ILs in the electrocatalytic NRR process. Moreover, the selection principles and issues of the application of ILs, as well as the future development direction for the electrocatalytic NRR process are concluded.

Structural Origin of Boson Peak in Glasses

Boson peak, the excess low energy excitations in the terahertz regime, is one of the most unique features of disordered systems and has been linked to many anomalous properties of glass materials. The nature and structural origin of the boson peak remain elusive and have been debated for more than a half century mainly due to the lack of real-time and real-space experimental insights of the dynamic phenomenon. In this work we employed femtosecond MeV ultrafast electron diffraction to characterize the atomic dynamics of metallic glasses in real time. The experiment reveals collective atomic oscillations, presented in elastic electron scattering and atomic pair distribution functions, within the boson peak frequency range of 1.0-1.8 THz in both reciprocal and real space. It was found that the oscillation frequency has reciprocal dependence on interatomic pair distances and the corresponding wave velocity experimentally affirms the transverse acoustic wave nature of the boson peak. The observed strong correlation between THz acoustic vibrations and coherent electron scattering provides compelling evidence that the boson peak originates from the collective transverse vibrational modes of structurally ordered atoms in the disordered system.

Automated Detection of GDPR Disclosure Requirements in Privacy Policies using Deep Active Learning

Since GDPR came into force in May 2018, companies have worked on their data practices to comply with this privacy law. In particular, since the privacy policy is the essential communication channel for users to understand and control their privacy, many companies updated their privacy policies after GDPR was enforced. However, most privacy policies are verbose, full of jargon, and vaguely describe companies' data practices and users' rights. Therefore, it is unclear if they comply with GDPR. In this paper, we create a privacy policy dataset of 1,080 websites labeled with the 18 GDPR requirements and develop a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based model which can classify the privacy policies with an accuracy of 89.2%. We apply our model to perform a measurement on the compliance in the privacy policies. Our results show that even after GDPR went into effect, 97% of websites still fail to comply with at least one requirement of GDPR.

Crystal-like Order Stabilizing Glasses: Structural Origin of Ultra-stable Metallic Glasses

Glasses are featured with a disordered amorphous structure, being opposite to crystals that are constituted by periodic lattices. In this study we report that the exceptional thermodynamic and kinetic stability of an ultra-stable binary ZrCu metallic glass, fabricated by high-temperature physical vapor deposition, originates from ubiquitous crystal-like medium range order (MRO) constituted by Voronoi polyhedron ordering with well-defined local translational symmetry beyond nearest atomic neighbors. The crystal-like MRO significantly improves the thermodynamic and kinetic stability of the glass, which is in opposition to the conventional wisdom that crystal-like order deteriorates the stability and forming ability of metallic glasses. This study unveils the structural origin of ultra-stable metallic glasses and shines a light on the intrinsic correlation of local atomic structure ordering with glass transition of metallic glasses.

The influence of $δ$ meson on the isospin splitting of in-medium $NN\to NΔ$ cross sections

The isospin splitting of the in-medium $NN\rightarrow NΔ$ cross sections in asymmetric nuclear medium are investigated in the framework of the one-boson exchange model by including $δ$ and $ρ$ mesons. Our results show that the medium correction factors $R=σ_{ NN\rightarrow NΔ}^*/σ_{NN\rightarrow NΔ}^{\text{free}}$ have $R_{pp \to nΔ^{++}} < R_{nn \to pΔ^{-}}$ and $R_{NN \to NΔ^{+}} R_{nn \to pΔ^{-}}$ and $R_{NN \to NΔ^{+}} >R_{NN \to NΔ^{0}}$.

Spectroscopic visualization of flat bands in magic-angle twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene: localization-delocalization coexisting electronic states

Recent transport studies have demonstrated the great potential of twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) as a new platform to host moiré flat bands with a higher tunability than twisted bilayer graphene (tBG). However, a direct visualization of the flat bands in tMBG and its comparison with the ones in tBG remain unexplored. Here, via fabricating on a single sample with exactly the same twist angle of ~1.13°, we present a direct comparative study between tMBG and tBG using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. We observe a sharp density of states peak near the Fermi energy in tunneling spectroscopy, confirming unambiguously the existence of flat electronic bands in tMBG. The bandwidth of this flat-band peak is found to be slightly narrower than that of the tBG, validating previous theoretical predictions. Remarkably, by measuring spatially resolved spectroscopy, combined with continuum model calculation, we show that the flat-band states in tMBG exhibit a unique layer-resolved localization-delocalization coexisting feature, which offers an unprecedented possibility to utilize their cooperation on exploring novel correlation phenomena. Our work provides important microscopic insight of flat-band states for better understanding the emergent physics in graphene moiré systems.

AnANet: Modeling Association and Alignment for Cross-modal Correlation Classification

The explosive increase of multimodal data makes a great demand in many cross-modal applications that follow the strict prior related assumption. Thus researchers study the definition of cross-modal correlation category and construct various classification systems and predictive models. However, those systems pay more attention to the fine-grained relevant types of cross-modal correlation, ignoring lots of implicit relevant data which are often divided into irrelevant types. What's worse is that none of previous predictive models manifest the essence of cross-modal correlation according to their definition at the modeling stage. In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the image-text correlation and redefine a new classification system based on implicit association and explicit alignment. To predict the type of image-text correlation, we propose the Association and Alignment Network according to our proposed definition (namely AnANet) which implicitly represents the global discrepancy and commonality between image and text and explicitly captures the cross-modal local relevance. The experimental results on our constructed new image-text correlation dataset show the effectiveness of our model.

Self-Conditioned Probabilistic Learning of Video Rescaling

Bicubic downscaling is a prevalent technique used to reduce the video storage burden or to accelerate the downstream processing speed. However, the inverse upscaling step is non-trivial, and the downscaled video may also deteriorate the performance of downstream tasks. In this paper, we propose a self-conditioned probabilistic framework for video rescaling to learn the paired downscaling and upscaling procedures simultaneously. During the training, we decrease the entropy of the information lost in the downscaling by maximizing its probability conditioned on the strong spatial-temporal prior information within the downscaled video. After optimization, the downscaled video by our framework preserves more meaningful information, which is beneficial for both the upscaling step and the downstream tasks, e.g., video action recognition task. We further extend the framework to a lossy video compression system, in which a gradient estimator for non-differential industrial lossy codecs is proposed for the end-to-end training of the whole system. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our approach on video rescaling, video compression, and efficient action recognition tasks.

SMS Goes Nuclear: Fortifying SMS-Based MFA in Online Account Ecosystem

With the rapid growth of online services, the number of online accounts proliferates. The security of a single user account no longer depends merely on its own service provider but also the accounts on other service platforms(We refer to this online account environment as Online Account Ecosystem). In this paper, we first uncover the vulnerability of Online Account Ecosystem, which stems from the defective multi-factor authentication (MFA), specifically the ones with SMS-based verification, and dependencies among accounts on different platforms. We propose Chain Reaction Attack that exploits the weakest point in Online Account Ecosystem and can ultimately compromise the most secure platform. Furthermore, we design and implement ActFort, a systematic approach to detect the vulnerability of Online Account Ecosystem by analyzing the authentication credential factors and sensitive personal information as well as evaluating the dependency relationships among online accounts. We evaluate our system on hundreds of representative online services listed in Alexa in diversified fields. Based on the analysis from ActFort, we provide several pragmatic insights into the current Online Account Ecosystem and propose several feasible countermeasures including the online account exposed information protection mechanism and the built-in authentication to fortify the security of Online Account Ecosystem.

Understanding and Mitigating Accuracy Disparity in Regression

With the widespread deployment of large-scale prediction systems in high-stakes domains, e.g., face recognition, criminal justice, etc., disparity in prediction accuracy between different demographic subgroups has called for fundamental understanding on the source of such disparity and algorithmic intervention to mitigate it. In this paper, we study the accuracy disparity problem in regression. To begin with, we first propose an error decomposition theorem, which decomposes the accuracy disparity into the distance between marginal label distributions and the distance between conditional representations, to help explain why such accuracy disparity appears in practice. Motivated by this error decomposition and the general idea of distribution alignment with statistical distances, we then propose an algorithm to reduce this disparity, and analyze its game-theoretic optima of the proposed objective functions. To corroborate our theoretical findings, we also conduct experiments on five benchmark datasets. The experimental results suggest that our proposed algorithms can effectively mitigate accuracy disparity while maintaining the predictive power of the regression models.

Haptic-enabled Mixed Reality System for Mixed-initiative Remote Robot Control

Robots assist in many areas that are considered unsafe for humans to operate. For instance, in handling pandemic diseases such as the recent Covid-19 outbreak and other outbreaks like Ebola, robots can assist in reaching areas dangerous for humans and do simple tasks such as pick up the correct medicine (among a set of bottles prescribed) and deliver to patients. In such cases, it might not be good to rely on the fully autonomous operation of robots. Since many mobile robots are fully functional with low-level tasks such as grabbing and moving, we consider the mixed-initiative control where the user can guide the robot remotely to finish such tasks. For this mixed-initiative control, the user controlling the robot needs to visualize a 3D scene as seen by the robot and guide it. Mixed reality can virtualize reality and immerse users in the 3D scene that is reconstructed from the real-world environment. This technique provides the user more freedom such as choosing viewpoints at view time. In recent years, benefiting from the high-quality data from Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) and RGBD cameras, mixed reality is widely used to build networked platforms to improve the performance of robot teleoperations and robot-human collaboration, and enhanced feedback for mixed-initiative control. In this paper, we proposed a novel haptic-enabled mixed reality system, that provides haptic interfaces to interact with the virtualized environments and give remote guidance for mobile robots towards high-level tasks. The experimental results show the effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed haptic enabled mixed reality system.

Intent Classification and Slot Filling for Privacy Policies

Understanding privacy policies is crucial for users as it empowers them to learn about the information that matters to them. Sentences written in a privacy policy document explain privacy practices, and the constituent text spans convey further specific information about that practice. We refer to predicting the privacy practice explained in a sentence as intent classification and identifying the text spans sharing specific information as slot filling. In this work, we propose PolicyIE, an English corpus consisting of 5,250 intent and 11,788 slot annotations spanning 31 privacy policies of websites and mobile applications. PolicyIE corpus is a challenging real-world benchmark with limited labeled examples reflecting the cost of collecting large-scale annotations from domain experts. We present two alternative neural approaches as baselines, (1) intent classification and slot filling as a joint sequence tagging and (2) modeling them as a sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) learning task. The experiment results show that both approaches perform comparably in intent classification, while the Seq2Seq method outperforms the sequence tagging approach in slot filling by a large margin. We perform a detailed error analysis to reveal the challenges of the proposed corpus.

What and How long: Prediction of Mobile App Engagement

User engagement is crucial to the long-term success of a mobile app. Several metrics, such as dwell time, have been used for measuring user engagement. However, how to effectively predict user engagement in the context of mobile apps is still an open research question. For example, do the mobile usage contexts (e.g.,~time of day) in which users access mobile apps impact their dwell time? Answers to such questions could help mobile operating system and publishers to optimize advertising and service placement. In this paper, we first conduct an empirical study for assessing how user characteristics, temporal features, and the short/long-term contexts contribute to gains in predicting users' app dwell time on the population level. The comprehensive analysis is conducted on large app usage logs collected through a mobile advertising company. The dataset covers more than 12K anonymous users and 1.3 million log events. Based on the analysis, we further investigate a novel mobile app engagement prediction problem -- can we predict simultaneously what app the user will use next and how long he/she will stay on that app? We propose several strategies for this joint prediction problem and demonstrate that our model can improve the performance significantly when compared with the state-of-the-art baselines. Our work can help mobile system developers in designing a better and more engagement-aware mobile app user experience.

Fast and Accurate Quantized Camera Scene Detection on Smartphones, Mobile AI 2021 Challenge: Report

Camera scene detection is among the most popular computer vision problem on smartphones. While many custom solutions were developed for this task by phone vendors, none of the designed models were available publicly up until now. To address this problem, we introduce the first Mobile AI challenge, where the target is to develop quantized deep learning-based camera scene classification solutions that can demonstrate a real-time performance on smartphones and IoT platforms. For this, the participants were provided with a large-scale CamSDD dataset consisting of more than 11K images belonging to the 30 most important scene categories. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the popular Apple Bionic A11 platform that can be found in many iOS devices. The proposed solutions are fully compatible with all major mobile AI accelerators and can demonstrate more than 100-200 FPS on the majority of recent smartphone platforms while achieving a top-3 accuracy of more than 98%. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

CryptGPU: Fast Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning on the GPU

We introduce CryptGPU, a system for privacy-preserving machine learning that implements all operations on the GPU (graphics processing unit). Just as GPUs played a pivotal role in the success of modern deep learning, they are also essential for realizing scalable privacy-preserving deep learning. In this work, we start by introducing a new interface to losslessly embed cryptographic operations over secret-shared values (in a discrete domain) into floating-point operations that can be processed by highly-optimized CUDA kernels for linear algebra. We then identify a sequence of "GPU-friendly" cryptographic protocols to enable privacy-preserving evaluation of both linear and non-linear operations on the GPU. Our microbenchmarks indicate that our private GPU-based convolution protocol is over 150x faster than the analogous CPU-based protocol; for non-linear operations like the ReLU activation function, our GPU-based protocol is around 10x faster than its CPU analog. With CryptGPU, we support private inference and private training on convolutional neural networks with over 60 million parameters as well as handle large datasets like ImageNet. Compared to the previous state-of-the-art, when considering large models and datasets, our protocols achieve a 2x to 8x improvement in private inference and a 6x to 36x improvement for private training. Our work not only showcases the viability of performing secure multiparty computation (MPC) entirely on the GPU to enable fast privacy-preserving machine learning, but also highlights the importance of designing new MPC primitives that can take full advantage of the GPU's computing capabilities.

Model-Targeted Poisoning Attacks with Provable Convergence

In a poisoning attack, an adversary with control over a small fraction of the training data attempts to select that data in a way that induces a corrupted model that misbehaves in favor of the adversary. We consider poisoning attacks against convex machine learning models and propose an efficient poisoning attack designed to induce a specified model. Unlike previous model-targeted poisoning attacks, our attack comes with provable convergence to {\it any} attainable target classifier. The distance from the induced classifier to the target classifier is inversely proportional to the square root of the number of poisoning points. We also provide a lower bound on the minimum number of poisoning points needed to achieve a given target classifier. Our method uses online convex optimization, so finds poisoning points incrementally. This provides more flexibility than previous attacks which require a priori assumption about the number of poisoning points. Our attack is the first model-targeted poisoning attack that provides provable convergence for convex models, and in our experiments, it either exceeds or matches state-of-the-art attacks in terms of attack success rate and distance to the target model.

Using Prior Knowledge to Guide BERT's Attention in Semantic Textual Matching Tasks

We study the problem of incorporating prior knowledge into a deep Transformer-based model,i.e.,Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), to enhance its performance on semantic textual matching tasks. By probing and analyzing what BERT has already known when solving this task, we obtain better understanding of what task-specific knowledge BERT needs the most and where it is most needed. The analysis further motivates us to take a different approach than most existing works. Instead of using prior knowledge to create a new training task for fine-tuning BERT, we directly inject knowledge into BERT's multi-head attention mechanism. This leads us to a simple yet effective approach that enjoys fast training stage as it saves the model from training on additional data or tasks other than the main task. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed knowledge-enhanced BERT is able to consistently improve semantic textual matching performance over the original BERT model, and the performance benefit is most salient when training data is scarce.
