Quantum simulation of quantum field theories as quantum chemistry

Conformal truncation is a powerful numerical method for solving generic strongly-coupled quantum field theories based on purely field-theoretic technics without introducing lattice regularization. We discuss possible speedups for performing those computations using quantum devices, with the help of near-term and future quantum algorithms. We show that this construction is very similar to quantum simulation problems appearing in quantum chemistry (which are widely investigated in quantum information science), and the renormalization group theory provides a field theory interpretation of conformal truncation simulation. Taking two-dimensional Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) as an example, we give various explicit calculations of variational and digital quantum simulations in the level of theories, classical trials, or quantum simulators from IBM, including adiabatic state preparation, variational quantum eigensolver, imaginary time evolution, and quantum Lanczos algorithm. Our work shows that quantum computation could not only help us understand fundamental physics in the lattice approximation, but also simulate quantum field theory methods directly, which are widely used in particle and nuclear physics, sharpening the statement of the quantum Church-Turing Thesis.

Introduction to Lightcone Conformal Truncation: QFT Dynamics from CFT Data

We both review and augment the lightcone conformal truncation (LCT) method. LCT is a Hamiltonian truncation method for calculating dynamical quantities in QFT in infinite volume. This document is a self-contained, pedagogical introduction and "how-to" manual for LCT. We focus on 2D QFTs which have UV descriptions as free CFTs containing scalars, fermions, and gauge fields, providing a rich starting arena for LCT applications. Along our way, we develop several new techniques and innovations that greatly enhance the efficiency and applicability of LCT. These include the development of CFT radial quantization methods for computing Hamiltonian matrix elements and a new SUSY-inspired way of avoiding state-dependent counterterms and maintaining chiral symmetry. We walk readers through the construction of their own basic LCT code, sufficient for small truncation cutoffs. We also provide a more sophisticated and comprehensive set of Mathematica packages and demonstrations that can be used to study a variety of 2D models. We guide the reader through these packages with several examples and illustrate how to obtain QFT observables, such as spectral densities and the Zamolodchikov $C$-function. Specific models considered are finite $N_c$ QCD, scalar $ϕ^4$ theory, and Yukawa theory.

Supersymmetric SYK model and random matrix theory

In this paper, we investigate the effect of supersymmetry on the symmetry classification of random matrix theory ensembles. We mainly consider the random matrix behaviors in the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, a toy model for the two-dimensional quantum black hole with supersymmetric constraint. Some analytical arguments and numerical results are given to show that the statistics of the supersymmetric SYK model could be interpreted as random matrix theory ensembles, with a different eight-fold classification from the original SYK model and some new features. The time-dependent evolution of the spectral form factor is also investigated, where predictions from random matrix theory are governing the late time behavior of the chaotic Hamiltonian with supersymmetry.

Solving the 2D SUSY Gross-Neveu-Yukawa Model with Conformal Truncation

We use Lightcone Conformal Truncation to analyze the RG flow of the two-dimensional supersymmetric Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory, i.e. the theory of a real scalar superfield with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric cubic superpotential. The theory depends on a single dimensionless coupling $\bar{g}$, and is expected to have a critical point at a tuned value $\bar{g}_*$ where it flows in the IR to the Tricritical Ising Model (TIM); the theory spontaneously breaks the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry on one side of this phase transition, and breaks SUSY on the other side. We calculate the spectrum of energies as a function of $\bar{g}$ and see the gap close as the critical point is approached, and numerically read off the critical exponent $ν$ in TIM. Beyond the critical point, the gap remains nearly zero, in agreement with the expectation of a massless Goldstino. We also study spectral functions of local operators on both sides of the phase transition and compare to analytic predictions where possible. In particular, we use the Zamolodchikov $C$-function to map the entire phase diagram of the theory. Crucial to this analysis is the fact that our truncation is able to preserve supersymmetry sufficiently to avoid any additional fine tuning.

Online Hyper-parameter Learning for Auto-Augmentation Strategy

Data augmentation is critical to the success of modern deep learning techniques. In this paper, we propose Online Hyper-parameter Learning for Auto-Augmentation (OHL-Auto-Aug), an economical solution that learns the augmentation policy distribution along with network training. Unlike previous methods on auto-augmentation that search augmentation strategies in an offline manner, our method formulates the augmentation policy as a parameterized probability distribution, thus allowing its parameters to be optimized jointly with network parameters. Our proposed OHL-Auto-Aug eliminates the need of re-training and dramatically reduces the cost of the overall search process, while establishes significantly accuracy improvements over baseline models. On both CIFAR-10 and ImageNet, our method achieves remarkable on search accuracy, 60x faster on CIFAR-10 and 24x faster on ImageNet, while maintaining competitive accuracies.

AM-LFS: AutoML for Loss Function Search

Designing an effective loss function plays an important role in visual analysis. Most existing loss function designs rely on hand-crafted heuristics that require domain experts to explore the large design space, which is usually sub-optimal and time-consuming. In this paper, we propose AutoML for Loss Function Search (AM-LFS) which leverages REINFORCE to search loss functions during the training process. The key contribution of this work is the design of search space which can guarantee the generalization and transferability on different vision tasks by including a bunch of existing prevailing loss functions in a unified formulation. We also propose an efficient optimization framework which can dynamically optimize the parameters of loss function's distribution during training. Extensive experimental results on four benchmark datasets show that, without any tricks, our method outperforms existing hand-crafted loss functions in various computer vision tasks.

Multi-Prototype Networks for Unconstrained Set-based Face Recognition

In this paper, we study the challenging unconstrained set-based face recognition problem where each subject face is instantiated by a set of media (images and videos) instead of a single image. Naively aggregating information from all the media within a set would suffer from the large intra-set variance caused by heterogeneous factors (e.g., varying media modalities, poses and illuminations) and fail to learn discriminative face representations. A novel Multi-Prototype Network (MPNet) model is thus proposed to learn multiple prototype face representations adaptively from the media sets. Each learned prototype is representative for the subject face under certain condition in terms of pose, illumination and media modality. Instead of handcrafting the set partition for prototype learning, MPNet introduces a Dense SubGraph (DSG) learning sub-net that implicitly untangles inconsistent media and learns a number of representative prototypes. Qualitative and quantitative experiments clearly demonstrate superiority of the proposed model over state-of-the-arts.

The Most Irrational Rational Theories

We propose a two-parameter family of modular invariant partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) holographically dual to pure three-dimensional gravity in anti de Sitter space. Our two parameters control the central charge, and the representation of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. At large central charge, the partition function has a gap to the first nontrivial primary state of $\frac{c}{24}$. As the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ representation dimension gets large, the partition function exhibits some of the qualitative features of an irrational CFT. This, for instance, is captured in the behavior of the spectral form factor. As part of these analyses, we find similar behavior in the minimal model spectral form factor as $c$ approaches $1$.

Constraints on Flavored 2d CFT Partition Functions

We study the implications of modular invariance on 2d CFT partition functions with abelian or non-abelian currents when chemical potentials for the charges are turned on, i.e. when the partition functions are "flavored". We begin with a new proof of the transformation law for the modular transformation of such partition functions. Then we proceed to apply modular bootstrap techniques to constrain the spectrum of charged states in the theory. We improve previous upper bounds on the state with the greatest "mass-to-charge" ratio in such theories, as well as upper bounds on the weight of the lightest charged state and the charge of the weakest charged state in the theory. We apply the extremal functional method to theories that saturate such bounds, and in several cases we find the resulting prediction for the occupation numbers are precisely integers. Because such theories sometimes do not saturate a bound on the full space of states but do saturate a bound in the neutral sector of states, we find that adding flavor allows the extremal functional method to solve for some partition functions that would not be accessible to it otherwise.

Top-forms of Leading Singularities in Nonplanar Multi-loop Amplitudes

Bipartite on-shell diagrams are the latest tool in constructing scattering amplitudes. In this paper we prove that a Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW)-decomposable on-shell diagram process a rational top-form if and only if the algebraic ideal comprised of the geometrical constraints is shifted linearly during successive BCFW integrations. With a proper geometric interpretation of the constraints in the Grassmannian manifold, the rational top-form integration contours can thus be obtained, and understood, in a straightforward way. All rational top-form integrands of arbitrary higher loops leading singularities can therefore be derived recursively, as long as the corresponding on-shell diagram is BCFW-decomposable.

Top-forms of Leading Singularities in Nonplanar Multi-loop Amplitudes

The on-shell diagram is a very important tool in studying scattering amplitudes. In this paper we discuss the on-shell diagrams without external BCFW-bridges. We introduce an extra step of adding an auxiliary external momentum line. Then we can decompose the on-shell diagrams by removing external BCFW-bridges to a planar diagram whose top-form is well-known to all now. The top-form of the on-shell diagram with the auxiliary line can be obtained by adding the BCFW-bridges in an inverse order as discussed in our former paper \cite{Chen:2014ara}. To get the top-form of the original diagram, the soft limit of the auxiliary line is needed. We obtain the evolution rule for the Grassmannian integral and the geometry constraint under the soft limit. This completes the top-form description of leading singularities in nonplanar scattering amplitudes of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills (SYM), which is valid for arbitrary higher-loops and beyond the Maximally-Helicity-Violation (MHV) amplitudes.

Fast and Accurate Neural Word Segmentation for Chinese

Neural models with minimal feature engineering have achieved competitive performance against traditional methods for the task of Chinese word segmentation. However, both training and working procedures of the current neural models are computationally inefficient. This paper presents a greedy neural word segmenter with balanced word and character embedding inputs to alleviate the existing drawbacks. Our segmenter is truly end-to-end, capable of performing segmentation much faster and even more accurate than state-of-the-art neural models on Chinese benchmark datasets.
