Deformation and Stability of Surface States in Dirac semimetals

The unusual surface states of topological semimetals have attracted a lot of attention. Recently, we showed [PNAS 113, 8648 (2016)] that for a Dirac semimetal (DSM) arising from band-inversion, such as Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$, the expected double Fermi arcs on the surface are not topologically protected. Quite generally, the arcs deform into states similar to those on the surface of a strong topological insulator. Here we address two questions related to deformation and stability of surface states in DSMs. First, we discuss why certain perturbations, no matter how large, are unable to destroy the double Fermi arcs. We show that this is related to certain extra (particle-hole) symmetry, which is non-generic in materials. Second, we discuss situations in which the surface states are completely destroyed without breaking any symmetry or impacting the bulk Dirac nodes. We are not aware of any experimental or density functional theory (DFT) candidates for a material which is a bulk DSM without any surface states, but our results clearly show that this is possible.

Deciphering the nonlocal entanglement entropy of fracton topological orders

The ground states of topological orders condense extended objects and support topological excitations. This nontrivial property leads to nonzero topological entanglement entropy $S_{topo}$ for conventional topological orders. Fracton topological order is an exotic class of models which is beyond the description of TQFT. With some assumptions about the condensates and the topological excitations, we derive a lower bound of the nonlocal entanglement entropy $S_{nonlocal}$ (a generalization of $S_{topo}$). The lower bound applies to Abelian stabilizer models including conventional topological orders as well as type \Rom{1} and type \Rom{2} fracton models, and it could be used to distinguish them. For fracton models, the lower bound shows that $S_{nonlocal}$ could obtain geometry-dependent values, and $S_{nonlocal}$ is extensive for certain choices of subsystems, including some choices which always give zero for TQFT. The stability of the lower bound under local perturbations is discussed.

High-Temperature Majorana Corner States

Majorana bound states often occur at the end of 1D topological superconductor or at the $π$ Josephson junction mediated by a helical edge state. Validated by a new bulk invariant and an intuitive edge argument, we show the emergence of one Majorana Kramers pair at each corner of a square-shaped 2D topological insulator proximitized by an $s_\pm$-wave (e.g., Fe-based) superconductor. We obtain a phase diagram that emphasizes the roles of bulk parameters and edge orientations. We propose several experimental realizations in lattice-matched candidate materials. Our scheme offers a high-temperature platform for exploring higher-order non-Abelian quasiparticles.

Classification and properties of quantum spin liquids on the hyperhoneycomb lattice

The family of "Kitaev materials" provides an ideal platform to study quantum spin liquids and their neighboring magnetic orders. Motivated by the possibility of a quantum spin liquid ground state in pressurized hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, we systematically classify and study symmetric quantum spin liquids on the hyperhoneycomb lattice, using the Abrikosov-fermion representation. Among the 176 symmetric $U(1)$ spin liquids (and 160 $Z_2$ spin liquids), we identify 8 "root" $U(1)$ spin liquids in proximity to the ground state of the solvable Kitave model on hyperhonecyomb lattices. These 8 states are promising candidates for possible $U(1)$ spin liquid ground states in pressurized $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. We further discuss physical properties of these 8 $U(1)$ spin liquid candidates, and show that they all support nodal-line-shaped spinon Fermi surfaces.

Unification of bosonic and fermionic theories of spin liquids on the kagome lattice

Recent numerical studies have provided strong evidence for a gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid in the kagome lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg model. A special feature of spin liquids is that symmetries can be fractionalized, and different patterns of symmetry fractionalization imply distinct phases. The symmetry fractionalization pattern for the kagome spin liquid remains to be determined. A popular approach to studying spin liquids is to decompose the physical spin into partons obeying either bose (Schwinger bosons) or fermi (Abrikosov fermions) statstics, which are then treated within the mean-field theory. A longstanding question has been whether these two approaches are truly distinct, or describe the same phase in complementary ways. Here we show that all 8 $Z_2$ spin liquid phases in Schwinger-boson mean-field (SBMF) construction can also be described in terms of Abrikosov fermions, unifying pairs of theories that seem rather distinct. The key idea is that for $Z_2$ spin liquid states that admit a SBMF description on kagome lattice, the symmetry fractionalization of visions is uniquely fixed. Two promising candidate states for kagome Heisenberg model, Sachdev's $Q_{1}=Q_{2}$ SBMF state and Lu-Ran-Lee's $Z_2[0,π]β$ Abrikosov fermion state, are found to describe the same symmetric spin liquid phase. We expect these results to aid in a complete specification of the numerically observed spin liquid phase. We also discuss a set of $Z_2$ spin liquid phases in fermionic parton approach, where spin rotation and lattice symmetries protect gapless edge states, that do not admit a SBMF description.

Symmetry protected gapless $Z_2$ spin liquids

Despite rapid progress in understanding gapped topological states, much less is known about gapless topological phases of matter, especially in strongly correlated electrons. In this work we discuss a large class of robust gapless quantum spin liquids in frustrated magnets made of half-integer spins, which are described by gapless fermionic spinons coupled to dynamical $Z_2$ gauge fields. Requiring $U(1)$ spin conservation, time reversal and certain space group symmetries, we show that certain spinon symmetry fractionalization class necessarily leads to a gapless spectrum. These gapless excitations are stable against any perturbations, as long as the required symmetries are preserved. Applying these gapless criteria to spin one-half systems on square, triangular and kagome lattices, we show that all gapped symmetric $Z_2$ spin liquids in Abrikosov-fermion representation can also be realized in Schwinger-boson representation. This leads to 64 gapped $Z_2$ spin liquids on square lattice, and 8 gapped states on both kagome and triangular lattices.

The Spinon Fermi Surface U(1) Spin Liquid in a Spin-Orbit-Coupled Triangular Lattice Mott Insulator YbMgGaO4

Motivated by the recent progress on the spin-orbit-coupled triangular lattice spin liquid candidate YbMgGaO4, we carry out a systematic projective symmetry group analysis and mean-field study of candidate U(1) spin liquid ground states. Due to the spin-orbital entanglement of the Yb moments, the space group symmetry operation transforms both the position and the orientation of the local moments, and hence brings different features for the projective realization of the lattice symmetries from the cases with spin-only moments. Among the eight U(1) spin liquids that we find with the fermionic parton construction, only one spin liquid state, that was proposed and analyzed in Yao Shen, et al, Nature 540, 559-562 (2016) and labeled as U1A00 in the present work, stands out and gives a large spinon Fermi surface and provides a consistent explanation for the spectroscopic results in YbMgGaO4. Further connection of this spinon Fermi surface U(1) spin liquid with YbMgGaO4 and the future directions are discussed. Finally, our results may apply to other spin-orbit-coupled triangular lattice spin liquid candidates, and more broadly, our general approach can be well extended to spin-orbit-coupled spin liquid candidate materials.

Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorems for symmetry protected topological phases

The Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorem and its descendants represent a class of powerful no-go theorems that rule out any short-range-entangled (SRE) symmetric ground state irrespective of the specific Hamiltonian, based only on certain microscopic inputs such as symmetries and particle filling numbers. In this work, we introduce and prove a new class of LSM-type theorems, where any symmetry-allowed SRE ground state must be a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase with robust gapless edge states. The key ingredient is to replace the lattice translation symmetry in usual LSM theorems by magnetic translation symmetry. These theorems provide new insights into numerical models and experimental realizations of SPT phases in interacting bosons and fermions.

Symmetry-enforced quantum spin Hall insulators in $π$-flux models

We prove a Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem for the quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) in two-dimensional $π$-flux models. In the presence of time reversal, $U(1)$ charge conservation and magnetic translation (with $π$-flux per unit cell) symmetries, if a generic interacting Hamiltonian has a unique gapped symmetric ground state at half filling (i.e. an odd number of electrons per unit cell), it can only be a QSH insulator. In other words, a trivial Mott insulator is forbidden by symmetries at half filling. We further show that such a symmetry-enforced QSHE can be realized in cold atoms, by shaking an optical lattice and applying a time-dependent Zeeman field.

Interplay of non-symmorphic symmetry and spin-orbit coupling in hyperkagome spin liquids: Applications to Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$

Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ provides a material platform to study three-dimensional quantum spin liquids in the geometrically frustrated hyperkagome lattice of Ir$^{4+}$ ions. In this work, we consider quantum spin liquids on hyperkagome lattice for generic spin models, focusing on the effects of anisotropic spin interactions. In particular, we classify possible $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $U(1)$ spin liquid states, following the projective symmetry group analysis in the slave-fermion representation. There are only three distinct $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids, together with 2 different $U(1)$ spin liquids. The non-symmorphic space group symmetry of hyperkagome lattice plays a vital role in simplifying the classification, forbidding "$π$-flux" or "staggered-flux" phases in contrast to symmorphic space groups. We further prove that both $U(1)$ states and one $Z_2$ state among all 3 are symmetry-protected gapless spin liquids, robust against any symmetry-preserving perturbations. Motivated by the "spin-freezing" behavior recently observed in Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ at low temperatures, we further investigate the nearest-neighbor spin model with dominant Heisenberg interaction subject to all possible anisotropic perturbations from spin-orbit couplings. We found a $U(1)$ spin liquid ground state with spinon fermi surfaces is energetically favored over $Z_2$ states. Among all spin-orbit coupling terms, we show that only Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction can induce spin anisotropy in the ground state when perturbing from the isotropic Heisenberg limit. Our work paves the way for a systematic study of quantum spin liquids in various materials with a hyperkagome crystal structure.

Classification and surface anomaly of glide symmetry protected topological phases in three dimensions

We study glide protected topological (GSPT) phases of interacting bosons and fermions in three spatial dimensions certain on-site symmetries. They are crystalline SPT phases, which are distinguished from a trivial product state only in the presence of non-symmorphic glide symmetry. We classify these GSPT phases with various on-site symmetries such as $U(1)$ and time reversal, and show that they can all be understood by stacking and coupling two-dimensional short-range-entangled phases in a glide-invariant way. Using such a coupled layer construction we study the anomalous surface topological orders of these GSPT phases, which gap out the two-dimensional surface states without breaking any symmetries. This framework is demonstrated in many examples, including the non-symmorphic topological insulator with "hourglass fermion" surface states.

Topological Bootstrap: Fractionalization From Kondo Coupling

We propose a route toward realizing fractionalized topological phases of matter (i.e. with intrinsic topological order) by literally building on un-fractionalized phases. Our approach employs a Kondo lattice model in which a gapped electronic system of non-interacting fermions is coupled to non-interacting local moments via the exchange interaction. Using general entanglement-based arguments and explicit lattice models, we show that in this way gapped spin liquids can be induced in the spin system. We demonstrate the power of this topological bootstrap concept with two examples: (1) a chiral spin liquid induced by a Chern insulator and (2) a Z2 spin liquid induced by a superconductor. In particular, in the latter example, the toric code is realized as an exactly solvable example of topological bootstrap. Our approach can be generalized to all lattices, higher dimensions, and non-abelian topological orders.

Are the double Fermi arcs of Dirac semimetals topologically protected?

Motivated by recent experiments probing anomalous surface states of Dirac semimetals (DSMs) Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$, we raise the question posed in the title. We find that, in marked contrast to Weyl semimetals, the gapless surface states of DSMs are not topologically protected in general, except on time-reversal-invariant planes of surface Brillouin zone. We first demonstrate this in a minimal $4$-band model with a pair of Dirac nodes at ${\bf k}=(0,0,\pm Q)$, where gapless states on the side surfaces are protected only near $k_z=0$. We then validate our conclusions about the absence of a topological invariant protecting double Fermi arcs in DSMs using a K-theory analysis for space groups of Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$. Generically, the arcs deform into a Fermi pocket, similar to {the surface states of a topological insulator (TI), and this can merge into the} projection of bulk Dirac Fermi surfaces as the chemical potential is varied. We make sharp predictions for the doping-dependence of the surface states of a DSM that can be tested by ARPES and quantum oscillation experiments.

Classification and Properties of Symmetry Enriched Topological Phases: A Chern-Simons approach with applications to Z2 spin liquids

We study 2+1 dimensional phases with topological order, such as fractional quantum Hall states and gapped spin liquids, in the presence of global symmetries. Phases that share the same topological order can then differ depending on the action of symmetry, leading to symmetry enriched topological (SET) phases. Here we present a K-matrix Chern-Simons approach to identify all distinct phases with Abelian topological order, in the presence of unitary or anti-unitary global symmetries . A key step is the identification of an edge sewing condition that is used to check if two putative phases are indeed distinct. We illustrate this method for the case of $Z_2$ topological order ($Z_2$ spin liquids), in the presence of an internal Z$_2$ global symmetry. We find 6 distinct phases. The well known quantum number fractionalization patterns account for half of these states. Phases also differ due to the addition of a symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase. Also, we allow for the unconventional possibility that anyons are exchanged by the symmetry. This leads to 2 additional phases with symmetry protected Majorana edge modes. Other routes to realizing protected edge states in SET phases are identified. Symmetry enriched Laughlin states and double semion theories are also discussed. Two surprising lessons that emerge are: (i) gauging the global symmetry of distinct SET phases always lead to different topological orders with the same total quantum dimension, (ii) gauge theories with distinct Dijkgraaf-Witten topological terms may have the same topological order.

Symmetric $Z_2$ spin liquids and their neighboring phases on triangular lattice

Motivated by recent numerical discovery of a gapped spin liquid phase in spin-$1/2$ triangular-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model, we classify symmetric $Z_2$ spin liquids on triangular lattice in the Abrikosov-fermion representation. We find 20 phases with distinct spinon symmetry quantum numbers, 8 of which have their counterparts in the Schwinger-boson representation. Among them we identify 2 promising candidates (#1 and #20), which can realize a gapped $Z_2$ spin liquid with up to next nearest neighbor mean-field amplitudes. We analyze their neighboring magnetic orders and valence bond solid patterns, and find one state (#20) that is connected to 120-degree Neel order by a continuous quantum phase transition. We also identify gapped nematic $Z_2$ spin liquids in the neighborhood of the symmetric states and find 3 promising candidates (#1, #6 and #20).

Space group constraints on weak indices in topological insulators

Lattice translation symmetry gives rise to a large class of "weak" topological insulators (TIs), characterized by translation-protected gapless surface states and dislocation bound states. In this work we show that space group symmetries lead to constraints on the weak topological indices that define these phases. In particular we show that screw rotation symmetry enforces the Hall conductivity along the screw axis to be quantized in multiples of the screw rank, which generally applies to interacting systems. We further show that certain 3D weak indices associated with quantum spin Hall effects (class AII) are forbidden by the Bravais-lattice and by glide or even-fold screw symmetries. These results put a strong constraints on candidates of weak TIs in the experimental and numerical search for topological materials, based on the crystal structure alone.

Bulk invariants and topological response in insulators and superconductors with nonsymmorphic symmetries

In this work we consider whether nonsymmorphic symmetries such as a glide plane can protect the existence of topological crystalline insulators and superconductors in three dimensions. In analogy to time-reversal symmetric insulators, we show that the presence of a glide gives rise to a quantized magnetoelectric polarizability, which we compute explicitly through the Chern-Simons 3-form of the bulk wave functions for a glide symmetric model. Our approach provides a measurable property for this insulator and naturally explains the connection with mirror symmetry protected insulators and the recently proposed $Z_2$ index for this phase. More generally, we prove that the magnetoelectric polarizability becomes quantized with any orientation-reversing space group symmetry. We also construct analogous examples of glide protected topological crystalline superconductors in classes D and C and discuss how bulk invariants are related to quantized surface thermal-Hall and spin-Hall responses.

Space group symmetry fractionalization in a chiral kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet

The anyonic excitations of a spin-liquid can feature fractional quantum numbers under space-group symmetries. Detecting these fractional quantum numbers, which are analogs of the fractional charge of Laughlin quasiparticles, may prove easier than the direct observation of anyonic braiding and statistics. Motivated by the recent numerical discovery of spin-liquid phases in the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet, we theoretically predict the pattern of space group symmetry fractionalization in the kagome lattice chiral spin liquid. We provide a method to detect these fractional quantum numbers in finite-size numerics which is simple to implement in DMRG. Applying these developments to the chiral spin liquid phase of a kagome Heisenberg model, we find perfect agreement between our theoretical prediction and numerical observations.
