Quantum Phase Transitions Between a Class of Symmetry Protected Topological States

The subject of this paper is the phase transition between symmetry protected topological states (SPTs). We consider spatial dimension $d$ and symmetry group $G$ so that the cohomology group, $H^{d+1}(G,U(1))$, contains at least one $Z_{2n}$ or $Z$ factor. We show that the phase transition between the trivial SPT and the root states that generate the $ Z_{2n} $ or $Z$ groups can be induced on the boundary of a d+1 dimensional $G\times Z_2^T$-symmetric SPT by a $Z_2^T$ symmetry breaking field. Moreover we show these boundary phase transitions can be "transplanted" to d dimensions and realized in lattice models as a function of a tuning parameter. The price one pays is for the critical value of the tuning parameter there is an extra non-local (duality-like) symmetry. In the case where the phase transition is continuous, our theory predicts the presence of unusual (sometimes fractionalized) excitations corresponding to delocalized boundary excitations of the non-trivial SPT on one side of the transition. This theory also predicts other phase transition scenarios including first order transition and transition via an intermediate symmetry breaking phase.

Topological spinon semimetals and gapless boundary states in three dimensions

Recently there has been much effort in understanding topological phases of matter with gapless bulk excitations, which are characterized by topological invariants and protected intrinsic boundary states. Here we show that topological semimetals of Majorana fermions arise in exactly solvable Kitaev spin models on a series of three dimensional lattices. The ground states of these models are quantum spin liquids with gapless nodal spectra of bulk Majorana fermion excitations. It is shown that these phases are topologically stable as long as certain discrete symmetries are protected. The corresponding topological indices and the gapless boundary states are explicitly computed to support these results. In contrast to previous studies of non-interacting systems, the phases discussed in this work are novel examples of gapless topological phases in interacting spin systems.

Topological Crystalline Metal in Orthorhombic Perovskite Iridates

Since topological insulators were theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in semiconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, more and more attention has been drawn to topological materials which host exotic surface states. These surface excitations are stable against perturbations since they are protected by global or spatial/lattice symmetries. Succeeded in achieving various topological insulators, a tempting challenge now is to search for metallic materials with novel topological properties. Here we predict that orthorhombic perovskite iridates realize a new class of metals dubbed topological crystalline metals, which support zero-energy surface states protected by certain lattice symmetry. These surface states can be probed by photoemission and tunnelling experiments. Furthermore, we show that by applying magnetic fields, the topological crystalline metal can be driven into other topological metallic phases, with different topological properties and surface states.

Measuring space-group symmetry fractionalization in Z$_2$ spin liquids

The interplay of symmetry and topological order leads to a variety of distinct phases of matter, the Symmetry Enriched Topological (SET) phases. Here we discuss physical observables that distinguish different SETs in the context of Z$_2$ quantum spin liquids with SU(2) spin rotation invariance. We focus on the cylinder geometry, and show that ground state quantum numbers for different topological sectors are robust invariants which can be used to identify the SET phase. More generally these invariants are related to 1D symmetry protected topological phases when viewing the cylinder geometry as a 1D spin chain. In particular we show that the Kagome spin liquid SET can be determined by measurements on one ground state, by wrapping the Kagome in a few different ways on the cylinder. In addition to guiding numerical studies, this approach provides a transparent way to connect bosonic and fermionic mean field theories of spin liquids. When fusing quasiparticles, it correctly predicts nontrivial phase factors for combining their space group quantum numbers.

Spin quantum Hall effects in a spin-1 topological paramagnet

AKLT state (or Haldane phase) in a spin-1 chain represents a large class of gapped topological paramagnets, which hosts symmetry-protected gapless excitations on the boundary. In this work we show how to realize this type of featureless spin-1 states on a generic two-dimensional lattice. These states have a gapped spectrum in the bulk but supports gapless edge states protected by spin rotational symmetry along a certain direction, and are featured by spin quantum Hall effect. Using fermion representation of integer-spins we show a concrete example of such spin-1 topological paramagnets on kagome lattice, and suggest a microscopic spin-1 Hamiltonian which may realize it.

Quantum phase transitions between bosonic symmetry protected topological phases in two dimensions: emergent $QED_3$ and anyon superfluid

Inspired by Chern-Simons effective theory description of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in two dimensions, we present a projective construction for many-body wavefunctions of SPT phases. Using this projective construction we can systematically write down trial wavefunctions of SPT phases on a lattice. An explicit example of SPT phase with $U(1)$ symmetry is constructed for two types of bosons with filling $ν_{b_1}=ν_{b_2}=\frac12$ per site on square lattice. We study continuous phase transitions between different $U(1)$-SPT phases based on projective construction. The effective theory around the critical point is emergent $QED_3$ with fermion number $N_f=2$. Such a continuous phase transition however needs fine tuning, and in general there are intermediate phases between different $U(1)$-SPT phases. We show that such an intermediate phase has the same response as an anyon superconductor, and hence dub it "anyon superfluid". A schematic phase diagram of interacting bosons with $U(1)$ symmetry is depicted.

Gapped symmetric edges of symmetry protected topological phases

Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped quantum phases which host symmetry-protected gapless edge excitations. On the other hand, the edge states can be gapped by spontaneously breaking symmetry. We show that topological defects on the symmetry-broken edge cannot proliferate due to their fractional statistics. A gapped symmetric boundary, however, can be achieved between an SPT phase and certain fractionalized phases by condensing the bound state of a topological defect and an anyon. We demonstrate this by two examples in two dimensions: an exactly solvable model for the boundary between topological Ising paramagnet and double semion model, and a fermionic example about the quantum spin Hall edge. Such a hybrid structure containing both SPT phase and fractionalized phase generally support ground state degeneracy on torus.

Theory and classification of interacting 'integer' topological phases in two dimensions: A Chern-Simons approach

We study topological phases of interacting systems in two spatial dimensions in the absence of topological order (i.e. with a unique ground state on closed manifolds and no fractional excitations). These are the closest interacting analogs of integer Quantum Hall states, topological insulators and superconductors. We adapt the well-known Chern-Simons {K}-matrix description of Quantum Hall states to classify such `integer' topological phases. Our main result is a general formalism that incorporates symmetries into the {K}-matrix description. Remarkably, this simple analysis yields the same list of topological phases as a recent group cohomology classification, and in addition provides field theories and explicit edge theories for all these phases. The bosonic topological phases, which only appear in the presence of interactions and which remain well defined in the presence of disorder include (i) bosonic insulators with a Hall conductance quantized to even integers (ii) a bosonic analog of quantum spin Hall insulators and (iii) a bosonic analog of a chiral topological superconductor, whose K matrix is the Cartan matrix of Lie group E$_8$. We also discuss interacting fermion systems where symmetries are realized in a projective fashion, where we find the present formalism can handle a wider range of symmetries than a recent group super-cohomology classification. Lastly we construct microscopic models of these phases from coupled one-dimensional systems.

Symmetry-induced anyon "breeding" in fractional quantum Hall states

An exotic feature of the fractional quantum Hall effect is the emergence of anyons, which are quasiparticle excitations with fractional statistics. In the presence of a symmetry, such as $U(1)$ charge conservation, it is well known that anyons can carry fractional symmetry quantum numbers. In this work we reveal a different class of symmetry realizations: i.e. anyons can "breed" in multiples under symmetry operation. We focus on the global Ising ($Z_2$) symmetry and show examples of these unconventional symmetry realizations in Laughlin-type fractional quantum Hall states. One remarkable consequence of such an Ising symmetry is the emergence of anyons on the Ising symmetry domain walls. We also provide a mathematical framework which generalizes this phenomenon to any Abelian topological orders.

Inversion symmetry protected topological insulators and superconductors

Three dimensional topological insulator represents a class of novel quantum phases hosting robust gapless boundary excitations, which is protected by global symmetries such as time reversal, charge conservation and spin rotational symmetry. In this work we systematically study another class of topological phases of weakly interacting electrons protected by spatial inversion symmetry, which generally don't support stable gapless boundary states. We classify these inversion-symmetric topological insulators and superconductors in the framework of K-theory, and construct their lattice models. We also discuss quantized response functions of these inversion-protected topological phases, which serve as their experimental signatures.

Can deeply underdoped superconducting cuprates be topological superconductors?

The nodal $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting gap is a hallmark of the cuprate high T$_c$ superconductors. Surprisingly recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of deeply underdoped cuprates revealed a nodeless energy gap which is adhered to the Fermi surface. Importantly this phenomenon is observed for compounds across several different cuprate families. In this letter we propose an exciting possibility, namely the fully gapped state is a topological superconductor.

Symmetry protected topological phases from decorated domain walls

Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases with unusual edge excitations can emerge in strongly interacting bosonic systems and are classified in terms of the cohomology of their symmetry groups. Here we provide a physical picture that leads to an intuitive understanding and wavefunctions for several SPT phases in d=1,2,3 dimensions. We consider symmetries which include a Z_2 subgroup, that allows us to define domain walls. While the usual disordered phase is obtained by proliferating domain walls, we show that SPT phases are realized when these proliferated domain walls are `decorated', i.e. are themselves SPT phases in one lower dimension. For example a d=2 SPT phase with Z_2 and time reversal symmetry is realized when the domain walls that proliferate are themselves in a d=1 Haldane/AKLT state. Similarly, d=3 SPT phases with Z_2 * Z_2 symmetry emerges when domain walls in a d=2 SPT with Z_2 symmetry are proliferated. The resulting ground states are shown to be equivalent to that obtained from group cohomology and field theoretical techniques. The result of gauging the Z_2 symmetry in these phases is also discussed. An extension of this construction where time reversal plays the role of Z_2 symmetry allows for a discussion of several d=3 SPT phases. This construction also leads to a new perspective on some well known d=1 SPT phases, from which exactly soluble parent Hamiltonians may be derived.

Critical theories of phase transition between symmetry protected topological states and their relation to the gapless boundary theories

Symmetry protected topological states (SPTs) have the same symmetry and the phase transition between them are beyond Landau's symmetry breaking formalism. In this paper we study (1) the critical theory of phase transition between trivial and non-trivial SPTs, and (2) the relation between such critical theory and the gapless boundary theory of SPTs. Based on examples of SO(3) and SU(2) SPTs, we propose that under appropriate boundary condition the critical theory contains the delocalized version of the boundary excitations. In addition, we prove that the boundary theory is the critical theory spatially confined between two SPTs. We expect these conclusions to hold in general and, in particular, for discrete symmetry groups as well.

Majorana fermions in spin-singlet nodal superconductors with coexisting non-collinear magnetic order

Realizations of Majorana fermions in solid state materials have attracted great interests recently in connection to topological order and quantum information processing. We propose a novel way to create Majorana fermions in superconductors. We show that an incipient non-collinear magnetic order turns a spin-singlet superconductor with nodes into a topological superconductor with a stable Majorana bound state in the vortex core; at a topologically-stable magnetic point defect; and on the edge. We argue that such an exotic non-Abelian phase can be realized in extended t-J models on the triangular and square lattices. It is promising to search for Majorana fermions in correlated electron materials where nodal superconductivity and magnetism are two common caricatures.

Superconductivity of doped Weyl semimetals: finite-momentum pairing and electronic analogues of the 3He-A phase

We study superconducting states of doped inversion-symmetric Weyl semimetals. Specifically, we consider a lattice model realizing a Weyl semimetal with an inversion symmetry and study the superconducting instability in the presence of a short-ranged attractive interaction. With a phonon-mediated attractive interaction, we find two competing states: a fully gapped finite-momentum (FFLO) pairing state and a nodal even-parity pairing state. We show that, in a BCS-type approximation, the finite-momentum pairing state is energetically favored over the usual even-parity paired state and is robust against weak disorder. Though energetically unfavorable, the even-parity pairing state provides an electronic analogue of the 3He-A phase in that the nodes of the even-parity state carry non-trivial winding numbers and therefore support a surface flat band. We briefly discuss other possible superconducting states that may be realized in Weyl semimetals.

Gapless edge states of BF field theory and translation-symmetric Z2 spin liquids

We study possible gapless edge states of translation-symmetric Z2 spin liquids. The gapless edge states emerge from dangling Majorana fermions at the boundary. We construct a series of mean-field Hamiltonians of Z2 spin liquids on the square lattice; these models can be obtained by generalization of Wen's exactly solvable plaquette model. We also study the details of the edge theory of these Z2 spin liquids and find their effective BF theory descriptions. The effective BF theories are shown to describe the crystal momenta of the ground states and their degeneracies and to predict the edge theories of these Z2 spin liquids. As a byproduct, we obtained a way to classify the BF theories reflecting the lattice symmetries. We discuss in closing three-dimensional Z2 spin liquids with gapless surface states on the cubic lattice.

Symmetry protected fractional Chern insulators and fractional topological insulators

In this paper we construct fully symmetric wavefunctions for the spin-polarized fractional Chern insulators (FCI) and time-reversal-invariant fractional topological insulators (FTI) in two dimensions using the parton approach. We show that the lattice symmetry gives rise to many different FCI and FTI phases even with the same filling fraction $ν$ (and the same quantized Hall conductance $σ_{xy}$ in FCI case). They have different symmetry-protected topological orders, which are characterized by different projective symmetry groups. We mainly focus on FCI phases which are realized in a partially filled band with Chern number one. The low-energy gauge groups of a generic $σ_{xy}=1/m\cdot e^2/h$ FCI wavefunctions can be either $SU(m)$ or the discrete group $Z_m$, and in the latter case the associated low-energy physics are described by Chern-Simons-Higgs theories. We use our construction to compute the ground state degeneracy. Examples of FCI/FTI wavefunctions on honeycomb lattice and checkerboard lattice are explicitly given. Possible non-Abelian FCI phases which may be realized in a partially filled band with Chern number two are discussed. Generic FTI wavefunctions in the absence of spin conservation are also presented whose low-energy gauge groups can be either $SU(m)\times SU(m)$ or $Z_m\times Z_m$. The constructed wavefunctions also set up the framework for future variational Monte Carlo simulations.

Z2 spin liquid in S=1/2 Heisenberg model on Kagome lattice: A projective symmetry group study of Schwinger-fermion mean-field states

With strong geometric frustration and quantum fluctuations, S=1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the Kagome lattice has long been considered as an ideal platform to realize spin liquid (SL), a novel phase with no symmetry breaking and fractionalized excitations. A recent numerical study of Heisenberg S=1/2 Kagome lattice model (HKLM) show that in contrast to earlier studies, the ground state is a singlet-gapped SL with signatures of Z2 topological order. Motivated by this numerical discovery, we use projective symmetry group to classify all 20 possible Schwinger-fermion mean-field states of Z2 SLs on Kagome lattice. Among them we found only one gapped Z2 SL (which we call Z2[0,π]βstate) in the neighborhood of U(1)-Dirac SL state, whose energy is found to be the lowest among many other candidate SLs including the uniform resonating-valentce-bond states. We thus propose this Z2[0,π]βstate to be the numerically discovered SL ground state of HKLM.
