Consistent and Relevant: Rethink the Query Embedding in General Sound Separation

The query-based audio separation usually employs specific queries to extract target sources from a mixture of audio signals. Currently, most query-based separation models need additional networks to obtain query embedding. In this way, separation model is optimized to be adapted to the distribution of query embedding. However, query embedding may exhibit mismatches with separation models due to inconsistent structures and independent information. In this paper, we present CaRE-SEP, a consistent and relevant embedding network for general sound separation to encourage a comprehensive reconsideration of query usage in audio separation. CaRE-SEP alleviates the potential mismatch between queries and separation in two aspects, including sharing network structure and sharing feature information. First, a Swin-Unet model with a shared encoder is conducted to unify query encoding and sound separation into one model, eliminating the network architecture difference and generating consistent distribution of query and separation features. Second, by initializing CaRE-SEP with a pretrained classification network and allowing gradient backpropagation, the query embedding is optimized to be relevant to the separation feature, further alleviating the feature mismatch problem. Experimental results indicate the proposed CaRE-SEP model substantially improves the performance of separation tasks. Moreover, visualizations validate the potential mismatch and how CaRE-SEP solves it.

Unified learning-based lossy and lossless JPEG recompression

JPEG is still the most widely used image compression algorithm. Most image compression algorithms only consider uncompressed original image, while ignoring a large number of already existing JPEG images. Recently, JPEG recompression approaches have been proposed to further reduce the size of JPEG files. However, those methods only consider JPEG lossless recompression, which is just a special case of the rate-distortion theorem. In this paper, we propose a unified lossly and lossless JPEG recompression framework, which consists of learned quantization table and Markovian hierarchical variational autoencoders. Experiments show that our method can achieve arbitrarily low distortion when the bitrate is close to the upper bound, namely the bitrate of the lossless compression model. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first learned method that bridges the gap between lossy and lossless recompression of JPEG images.

Audio Prompt Tuning for Universal Sound Separation

Universal sound separation (USS) is a task to separate arbitrary sounds from an audio mixture. Existing USS systems are capable of separating arbitrary sources, given a few examples of the target sources as queries. However, separating arbitrary sounds with a single system is challenging, and the robustness is not always guaranteed. In this work, we propose audio prompt tuning (APT), a simple yet effective approach to enhance existing USS systems. Specifically, APT improves the separation performance of specific sources through training a small number of prompt parameters with limited audio samples, while maintaining the generalization of the USS model by keeping its parameters frozen. We evaluate the proposed method on MUSDB18 and ESC-50 datasets. Compared with the baseline model, APT can improve the signal-to-distortion ratio performance by 0.67 dB and 2.06 dB using the full training set of two datasets. Moreover, APT with only 5 audio samples even outperforms the baseline systems utilizing full training data on the ESC-50 dataset, indicating the great potential of few-shot APT.

DASA: Difficulty-Aware Semantic Augmentation for Speaker Verification

Data augmentation is vital to the generalization ability and robustness of deep neural networks (DNNs) models. Existing augmentation methods for speaker verification manipulate the raw signal, which are time-consuming and the augmented samples lack diversity. In this paper, we present a novel difficulty-aware semantic augmentation (DASA) approach for speaker verification, which can generate diversified training samples in speaker embedding space with negligible extra computing cost. Firstly, we augment training samples by perturbing speaker embeddings along semantic directions, which are obtained from speaker-wise covariance matrices. Secondly, accurate covariance matrices are estimated from robust speaker embeddings during training, so we introduce difficultyaware additive margin softmax (DAAM-Softmax) to obtain optimal speaker embeddings. Finally, we assume the number of augmented samples goes to infinity and derive a closed-form upper bound of the expected loss with DASA, which achieves compatibility and efficiency. Extensive experiments demonstrate the proposed approach can achieve a remarkable performance improvement. The best result achieves a 14.6% relative reduction in EER metric on CN-Celeb evaluation set.

HyperLISTA-ABT: An Ultra-light Unfolded Network for Accurate Multi-component Differential Tomographic SAR Inversion

Deep neural networks based on unrolled iterative algorithms have achieved remarkable success in sparse reconstruction applications, such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomographic inversion (TomoSAR). However, the currently available deep learning-based TomoSAR algorithms are limited to three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction. The extension of deep learning-based algorithms to four-dimensional (4D) imaging, i.e., differential TomoSAR (D-TomoSAR) applications, is impeded mainly due to the high-dimensional weight matrices required by the network designed for D-TomoSAR inversion, which typically contain millions of freely trainable parameters. Learning such huge number of weights requires an enormous number of training samples, resulting in a large memory burden and excessive time consumption. To tackle this issue, we propose an efficient and accurate algorithm called HyperLISTA-ABT. The weights in HyperLISTA-ABT are determined in an analytical way according to a minimum coherence criterion, trimming the model down to an ultra-light one with only three hyperparameters. Additionally, HyperLISTA-ABT improves the global thresholding by utilizing an adaptive blockwise thresholding scheme, which applies block-coordinate techniques and conducts thresholding in local blocks, so that weak expressions and local features can be retained in the shrinkage step layer by layer. Simulations were performed and demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach, showing that HyperLISTA-ABT achieves superior computational efficiency and with no significant performance degradation compared to state-of-the-art methods. Real data experiments showed that a high-quality 4D point cloud could be reconstructed over a large area by the proposed HyperLISTA-ABT with affordable computational resources and in a fast time.

Bandwidth-efficient Inference for Neural Image Compression

With neural networks growing deeper and feature maps growing larger, limited communication bandwidth with external memory (or DRAM) and power constraints become a bottleneck in implementing network inference on mobile and edge devices. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end differentiable bandwidth efficient neural inference method with the activation compressed by neural data compression method. Specifically, we propose a transform-quantization-entropy coding pipeline for activation compression with symmetric exponential Golomb coding and a data-dependent Gaussian entropy model for arithmetic coding. Optimized with existing model quantization methods, low-level task of image compression can achieve up to 19x bandwidth reduction with 6.21x energy saving.

Efficient Learned Lossless JPEG Recompression

JPEG is one of the most popular image compression methods. It is beneficial to compress those existing JPEG files without introducing additional distortion. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based method to further compress JPEG images losslessly. Specifically, we propose a Multi-Level Parallel Conditional Modeling (ML-PCM) architecture, which enables parallel decoding in different granularities. First, luma and chroma are processed independently to allow parallel coding. Second, we propose pipeline parallel context model (PPCM) and compressed checkerboard context model (CCCM) for the effective conditional modeling and efficient decoding within luma and chroma components. Our method has much lower latency while achieves better compression ratio compared with previous SOTA. After proper software optimization, we can obtain a good throughput of 57 FPS for 1080P images on NVIDIA T4 GPU. Furthermore, combined with quantization, our approach can also act as a lossy JPEG codec which has obvious advantage over SOTA lossy compression methods in high bit rate (bpp$>0.9$).

Conditional Perceptual Quality Preserving Image Compression

We propose conditional perceptual quality, an extension of the perceptual quality defined in \citet{blau2018perception}, by conditioning it on user defined information. Specifically, we extend the original perceptual quality $d(p_{X},p_{\hat{X}})$ to the conditional perceptual quality $d(p_{X|Y},p_{\hat{X}|Y})$, where $X$ is the original image, $\hat{X}$ is the reconstructed, $Y$ is side information defined by user and $d(.,.)$ is divergence. We show that conditional perceptual quality has similar theoretical properties as rate-distortion-perception trade-off \citep{blau2019rethinking}. Based on these theoretical results, we propose an optimal framework for conditional perceptual quality preserving compression. Experimental results show that our codec successfully maintains high perceptual quality and semantic quality at all bitrate. Besides, by providing a lowerbound of common randomness required, we settle the previous arguments on whether randomness should be incorporated into generator for (conditional) perceptual quality compression. The source code is provided in supplementary material.

MyoFold: rapid Myocardial tissue and movement quantification via a highly Folded sequence

Purpose: To develop and evaluate a cardiovascular magnetic resonance sequence (MyoFold) for rapid myocardial tissue and movement characterization. Method: MyoFold sequentially performs joint T1/T2 mapping and cine for one left-ventricle slice within a breathing-holding of 12 heartbeats. MyoFold uses balanced Steady-State-Free-Precession (bSSFP) with 2-fold acceleration for data readout and adopts an electrocardiogram (ECG) to synchronize the cardiac cycle. MyoFold first acquires six single-shot inversion-recovery images at the diastole of the first six heartbeats. For joint T1/T2 mapping, T2 preparation (T2-prep) adds different T2 weightings to the last three images. On the remaining six heartbeats, segmented bSSFP is continuously performed for each cardiac phase for cine. We build a neural network and trained it using the numerical simulation of MyoFold for T1 and T2 calculations. MyoFold was validated through phantom and in-vivo experiments and compared to MOLLI, SASHA, T2-prep bSSFP, and convention cine. Results: MyoFold phantom T1 had a 10% overestimation while MyoFold T2 had high accuracy. MyoFold in-vivo T1 had comparable accuracy to that of SASHA and precision to that of MOLLI. MyoFold had good agreement with T2-prep bSSFP in myocardium T2 measurement. There was no difference in the myocardium thickness measurement between the MyoFold cine and convention cine. Conclusion: MyoFold can simultaneously quantify myocardial tissue and movement, with accuracy and precision comparable to dedicated sequences, saving three-fold scan time.

Basis Pursuit Denoising via Recurrent Neural Network Applied to Super-resolving SAR Tomography

Finding sparse solutions of underdetermined linear systems commonly requires the solving of L1 regularized least squares minimization problem, which is also known as the basis pursuit denoising (BPDN). They are computationally expensive since they cannot be solved analytically. An emerging technique known as deep unrolling provided a good combination of the descriptive ability of neural networks, explainable, and computational efficiency for BPDN. Many unrolled neural networks for BPDN, e.g. learned iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm and its variants, employ shrinkage functions to prune elements with small magnitude. Through experiments on synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR), we discover the shrinkage step leads to unavoidable information loss in the dynamics of networks and degrades the performance of the model. We propose a recurrent neural network (RNN) with novel sparse minimal gated units (SMGUs) to solve the information loss issue. The proposed RNN architecture with SMGUs benefits from incorporating historical information into optimization, and thus effectively preserves full information in the final output. Taking TomoSAR inversion as an example, extensive simulations demonstrated that the proposed RNN outperforms the state-of-the-art deep learning-based algorithm in terms of super-resolution power as well as generalization ability. It achieved a 10% to 20% higher double scatterers detection rate and is less sensitive to phase and amplitude ratio differences between scatterers. Test on real TerraSAR-X spotlight images also shows a high-quality 3-D reconstruction of the test site.

Bit Allocation using Optimization

In this paper, we consider the problem of bit allocation in Neural Video Compression (NVC). First, we reveal a fundamental relationship between bit allocation in NVC and Semi-Amortized Variational Inference (SAVI). Specifically, we show that SAVI with GoP (Group-of-Picture)-level likelihood is equivalent to pixel-level bit allocation with precise rate \& quality dependency model. Based on this equivalence, we establish a new paradigm of bit allocation using SAVI. Different from previous bit allocation methods, our approach requires no empirical model and is thus optimal. Moreover, as the original SAVI using gradient ascent only applies to single-level latent, we extend the SAVI to multi-level such as NVC by recursively applying back-propagating through gradient ascent. Finally, we propose a tractable approximation for practical implementation. Our method can be applied to scenarios where performance outweights encoding speed, and serves as an empirical bound on the R-D performance of bit allocation. Experimental results show that current state-of-the-art bit allocation algorithms still have a room of $\approx 0.5$ dB PSNR to improve compared with ours. High Quality Large-Scale 3-D Urban Mapping with Multi-Master TomoSAR

Multi-baseline interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques are effective approaches for retrieving the 3-D information of urban areas. In order to obtain a plausible reconstruction, it is necessary to use large-stack interferograms. Hence, these methods are commonly not appropriate for large-scale 3-D urban mapping using TanDEM-X data where only a few acquisitions are available in average for each city. This work proposes a new SAR tomographic processing framework to work with those extremely small stacks, which integrates the non-local filtering into SAR tomography inversion. The applicability of the algorithm is demonstrated using a TanDEM-X multi-baseline stack with 5 bistatic interferograms over the whole city of Munich, Germany. Systematic comparison of our result with airborne LiDAR data shows that the relative height accuracy of two third buildings is within two meters, which outperforms the TanDEM-X raw DEM. The promising performance of the proposed algorithm paved the first step towards high quality large-scale 3-D urban mapping.

Cooperation Learning Enhanced Colonic Polyp Segmentation Based on Transformer-CNN Fusion

Traditional segmentation methods for colonic polyps are mainly designed based on low-level features. They could not accurately extract the location of small colonic polyps. Although the existing deep learning methods can improve the segmentation accuracy, their effects are still unsatisfied. To meet the above challenges, we propose a hybrid network called Fusion-Transformer-HardNetMSEG (i.e., Fu-TransHNet) in this study. Fu-TransHNet uses deep learning of different mechanisms to fuse each other and is enhanced with multi-view collaborative learning techniques. Firstly, the Fu-TransHNet utilizes the Transformer branch and the CNN branch to realize the global feature learning and local feature learning, respectively. Secondly, a fusion module is designed to integrate the features from two branches. The fusion module consists of two parts: 1) the Global-Local Feature Fusion (GLFF) part and 2) the Dense Fusion of Multi-scale features (DFM) part. The former is built to compensate the feature information mission from two branches at the same scale; the latter is constructed to enhance the feature representation. Thirdly, the above two branches and fusion modules utilize multi-view cooperative learning techniques to obtain their respective weights that denote their importance and then make a final decision comprehensively. Experimental results showed that the Fu-TransHNet network was superior to the existing methods on five widely used benchmark datasets. In particular, on the ETIS-LaribPolypDB dataset containing many small-target colonic polyps, the mDice obtained by Fu-TransHNet were 12.4% and 6.2% higher than the state-of-the-art methods HardNet-MSEG and TransFuse-s, respectively.

Tunable thermal conductivity of ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers via molecular bond modulation

The dipoles in ferroelectric copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) can be driven by electric field, introducing phonon transport modulations through polarizing molecular chains. The thermal conductivity in single 75/25 P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers is found to increase with electric field related phonon renormalization, resulted from change in vibrational assignment excited by polarization process. This is evidenced by a direct change of bond energy and bond length in 75/25 P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers from Raman characterization under polarization electric field. The experimental results provide further intuitive evidences that the size of ferroelectric polymers could directly affect the ferroelectricity from the size-dependent thermal transport measurement.

So2Sat POP -- A Curated Benchmark Data Set for Population Estimation from Space on a Continental Scale

Obtaining a dynamic population distribution is key to many decision-making processes such as urban planning, disaster management and most importantly helping the government to better allocate socio-technical supply. For the aspiration of these objectives, good population data is essential. The traditional method of collecting population data through the census is expensive and tedious. In recent years, statistical and machine learning methods have been developed to estimate population distribution. Most of the methods use data sets that are either developed on a small scale or not publicly available yet. Thus, the development and evaluation of new methods become challenging. We fill this gap by providing a comprehensive data set for population estimation in 98 European cities. The data set comprises a digital elevation model, local climate zone, land use proportions, nighttime lights in combination with multi-spectral Sentinel-2 imagery, and data from the Open Street Map initiative. We anticipate that it would be a valuable addition to the research community for the development of sophisticated approaches in the field of population estimation.

Fate of the first-order chiral phase transition in QCD: Implications for dark QCD studied via a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

The first-order nature of the chiral phase transition in QCD-like theories can play crucial roles to address a dark side of the Universe, where the created out-of equilibrium is essential to serve as cosmological and astrophysical probes such as gravitational wave productions, which have extensively been explored. This interdisciplinary physics is built based on a widely-accepted conjecture that the thermal chiral phase transition in QCD-like theories with massless (light) three flavors is of first order. We find that such a first order feature may not hold, when ordinary or dark quarks are externally coupled to a weak enough background field of photon or dark photon (which we collectively call a ``magnetic" field). We assume that a weak ``magnetic" background field could be originated from some ``magnetogenesis" in the early Universe. We work on a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model which can describe the chiral phase transition in a wide class of QCD-like theories. We show that in the case with massless (light) three flavors, the first-order feature goes away when $2 f_π^2 \lesssim eB ( \ll (4 πf_π)^2)$, where $eB$ is the ``magnetic" field strength and $f_π$ the pion decay constant at the vacuum. This disappearance is the generic consequence of the presence of the ``magnetically" induced scale anomaly and the ``magnetic" catalysis for the chiral symmetry breaking, and would impact or constrain modeling dark QCD coupled to an external ``magnetic" field.

Geo-Information Harvesting from Social Media Data

As unconventional sources of geo-information, massive imagery and text messages from open platforms and social media form a temporally quasi-seamless, spatially multi-perspective stream, but with unknown and diverse quality. Due to its complementarity to remote sensing data, geo-information from these sources offers promising perspectives, but harvesting is not trivial due to its data characteristics. In this article, we address key aspects in the field, including data availability, analysis-ready data preparation and data management, geo-information extraction from social media text messages and images, and the fusion of social media and remote sensing data. We then showcase some exemplary geographic applications. In addition, we present the first extensive discussion of ethical considerations of social media data in the context of geo-information harvesting and geographic applications. With this effort, we wish to stimulate curiosity and lay the groundwork for researchers who intend to explore social media data for geo-applications. We encourage the community to join forces by sharing their code and data.

Generative Modelling of the Ageing Heart with Cross-Sectional Imaging and Clinical Data

Cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death globally, is an age-related disease. Understanding the morphological and functional changes of the heart during ageing is a key scientific question, the answer to which will help us define important risk factors of cardiovascular disease and monitor disease progression. In this work, we propose a novel conditional generative model to describe the changes of 3D anatomy of the heart during ageing. The proposed model is flexible and allows integration of multiple clinical factors (e.g. age, gender) into the generating process. We train the model on a large-scale cross-sectional dataset of cardiac anatomies and evaluate on both cross-sectional and longitudinal datasets. The model demonstrates excellent performance in predicting the longitudinal evolution of the ageing heart and modelling its data distribution. The codes are available at https://github.com/MengyunQ/AgeHeart.
