Negative linear compressibility and unusual dynamic behaviors of NaB3

First-principles calculations reveal that sodium boride (NaB3) undergoes a phase transition from a tetragonal P4/mbm phase to an orthorhombic Pbam phase at about 16 GPa, accompanied by counterintuitive lattice expansion along the crystallographic a-axis. This unusual compression behavior is identified as negative linear compressibility (NLC), which is dominantly attributed to the symmetry-breaking of boron framework. Meanwhile, the P4/mbm and Pbam phases form superionic conductors after undergoing a peculiar swap state at high temperature. Specifically, under warm conditions the Na cation pairs exhibit a rare local exchange (or rotation) behavior, which may be originated from the asymmetric energy barriers of different diffusion paths. The study of NaB3 compound sheds new light on a material with the combination of NLC and ion transportation at extreme conditions.

Deep Learning for Latent Events Forecasting in Twitter Aided Caching Networks

A novel Twitter context aided content caching (TAC) framework is proposed for enhancing the caching efficiency by taking advantage of the legibility and massive volume of Twitter data. For the purpose of promoting the caching efficiency, three machine learning models are proposed to predict latent events and events popularity, utilizing collect Twitter data with geo-tags and geographic information of the adjacent base stations (BSs). Firstly, we propose a latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) model for latent events forecasting taking advantage of the superiority of the LDA model in natural language processing (NLP). Then, we conceive long short-term memory (LSTM) with skip-gram embedding approach and LSTM with continuous skip-gram-Geo-aware embedding approach for the events popularity forecasting. Lastly, we associate the predicted latent events and the popularity of the events with the caching strategy. Extensive practical experiments demonstrate that: (1) The proposed TAC framework outperforms the conventional caching framework and is capable of being employed in practical applications thanks to the associating ability with public interests. (2) The proposed LDA approach conserves superiority for natural language processing (NLP) in Twitter data. (3) The perplexity of the proposed skip-gram-based LSTM is lower compared with the conventional LDA approach. (4) Evaluation of the model demonstrates that the hit rates of tweets of the model vary from 50% to 65% and the hit rate of the caching contents is up to approximately 75\% with smaller caching space compared to conventional algorithms.

Machine Learning for User Partitioning and Phase Shifters Design in RIS-Aided NOMA Networks

A novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) downlink transmission framework is proposed. We formulate a long-term stochastic optimization problem that involves a joint optimization of NOMA user partitioning and RIS phase shifting, aiming at maximizing the sum data rate of the mobile users (MUs) in NOMA downlink networks. To solve the challenging joint optimization problem, we invoke a modified object migration automation (MOMA) algorithm to partition the users into equal-size clusters. To optimize the RIS phase-shifting matrix, we propose a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm to collaboratively control multiple reflecting elements (REs) of the RIS. Different from conventional training-then-testing processing, we consider a long-term self-adjusting learning model where the intelligent agent is capable of learning the optimal action for every given state through exploration and exploitation. Extensive numerical results demonstrate that: 1) The proposed RIS-aided NOMA downlink framework achieves an enhanced sum data rate compared with the conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) framework. 2) The proposed DDPG algorithm is capable of learning a dynamic resource allocation policy in a long-term manner. 3) The performance of the proposed RIS-aided NOMA framework can be improved by increasing the granularity of the RIS phase shifts. The numerical results also show that reducing the granularity of the RIS phase shifts and increasing the number of REs are two efficient methods to improve the sum data rate of the MUs.

Crystal and Electronic Structure of GaTa$_4$Se$_8$ From First-Principle Calculations

GaTa$_4$Se$_8$ belongs to the lacunar spinel family. Its crystal structures is still a puzzle though there have been intensive studies on its novel properties, such as the Mott insulator phase and superconductivity under pressure. In this work, we investigate its phonon spectra through first-principle calculations and proposed it most probably has crystal structure phase transition, which is consistent with several experimental observations. For the prototype lacunar spinel with cubic symmetry of space group $F\bar{4}3m$, its phonon spectra have three soft modes in the whole Brillouin zone, indicating the strong dynamical instability of such crystal structure. In order to find the dynamically stable crystal structure, further calculations indicate two new structures of GaTa$_4$Se$_8$, corresponding to $R3m$ and $P\bar{4}2_{1}m$, verifying that at the ambient pressure, there does exist structure phase transition of GaTa$_4$Se$_8$ from $F\bar{4}3m$ to other structures when the temperature is lowered. We also performed electronic structure calculation for $R3m$ and $P\bar{4}2_{1}m$ structure, showing that $P\bar{4}2_{1}m$ structure GaTa$_4$Se$_8$ is band insulator, and obtained Mott insulator state for $R3m$ structure by DMFT calculation under single-band Hubbard model picture when interaction parameter U is larger than 0.40 eV vs. band width of 0.25 eV. It is reasonable to assume that while lowering the temperature, $F\bar{4}3m$ structure GaTa$_4$Se$_8$ becomes $R3m$ structure GaTa$_4$Se$_8$ first, then $P\bar{4}2_{1}m$ structure GaTa$_4$Se$_8$, because of the symmetry of $P\bar{4}2_{1}m$ is lower than $R3m$ after Jahn-Teller distortion. The structure transition may explain the magnetic susceptibility anomalous at low temperature.

Approaching Prosumer Social Optimum via Energy Sharing with Proof of Convergence

With the advent of prosumers, the traditional centralized operation may become impracticable due to computational burden, privacy concerns, and conflicting interests. In this paper, an energy sharing mechanism is proposed to accommodate prosumers' strategic decision-making on their self-production and demand in the presence of capacity constraints. Under this setting, prosumers play a generalized Nash game. We prove main properties of the game: an equilibrium exists and is partially unique; no prosumer is worse off by energy sharing and the price-of-anarchy is 1-O(1/I) where I is the number of prosumers. In particular, the PoA tends to 1 with a growing number of prosumers, meaning that the resulting total cost under the proposed energy sharing approaches social optimum. We prove that the corresponding prosumers' strategies converge to the social optimal solution as well. Finally we propose a bidding process and prove that it converges to the energy sharing equilibrium under mild conditions. Illustrative examples are provided to validate the results.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Multi-Cell NOMA Networks

This paper proposes a novel framework of resource allocation in intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided multi-cell non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks, where a sum-rate maximization problem is formulated. To address this challenging mixed-integer non-linear problem, we decompose it into an optimization problem (P1) with continuous variables and a matching problem (P2) with integer variables. For the non-convex optimization problem (P1), iterative algorithms are proposed for allocating transmit power, designing reflection matrix, and determining decoding order by invoking relaxation methods such as convex upper bound substitution, successive convex approximation and semidefinite relaxation. For the combinational problem (P2), swap matching-based algorithms are proposed to achieve a two-sided exchange-stable state among users, BSs and subchannels. Numerical results are provided for demonstrating that the sum-rate of the NOMA networks is capable of being enhanced with the aid of the IRS.

Determining Ionizing Doses in Medium Earth Orbits Using Long-Term GPS Particle Measurements

We use long-term electron and proton in-situ measurements made by the CXD particle instruments, developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory and carried on board GPS satellites, to determine total ionizing dose (TID) values and daily/yearly dose rate (DR) values in medium Earth orbits (MEOs) caused by the natural space radiation environment. Here measurement-based TID and DR values on a simplified sample geometry--a small (with a radius of 0.1 mm) Silicon detector within an Aluminum shielding sphere with a thickness of 100 mil--are compared to those calculated from empirical radiation models. Results over the solar cycle 24 show that electron TID from measurements in GPS orbit is well above the values calculated from the median/mean fluences from AE8 and AE9 models, but close to model fluences at high percentiles. Also, it is confirmed that in MEOs proton contributions to TID are minor and mainly dominated by solar energetic protons. Several factors affecting those dose calculations are discussed and evaluated. Results from this study provide us another out-of-sample test on the reliability of existing empirical space radiation models, and also help estimate the margin factors on calculated dose values in MEOs that pass through the heart of the Earth's outer radiation belt.

Preprints as accelerator of scholarly communication: An empirical analysis in Mathematics

In this study we analyse the key driving factors of preprints in enhancing scholarly communication. To this end we use four groups of metrics, one referring to scholarly communication and based on bibliometric indicators (Web of Science and Scopus citations), while the others reflect usage (usage counts in Web of Science), capture (Mendeley readers) and social media attention (Tweets). Hereby we measure two effects associated with preprint publishing: publication delay and impact. We define and use several indicators to assess the impact of journal articles with previous preprint versions in arXiv. In particular, the indicators measure several times characterizing the process of arXiv preprints publishing and the reviewing process of the journal versions, and the ageing patterns of citations to preprints. In addition, we compare the observed patterns between preprints and non-OA articles without any previous preprint versions in arXiv. We could observe that the "early-view" and "open-access" effects of preprints contribute to a measurable citation and readership advantage of preprints. Articles with preprint versions are more likely to be mentioned in social media and have shorter Altmetric attention delay. Usage and capture prove to have only moderate but stronger correlation with citations than Tweets. The different slopes of the regression lines between the different indicators reflect different order of magnitude of usage, capture and citation data.

Path Design and Resource Management for NOMA enhanced Indoor Intelligent Robots

A communication enabled indoor intelligent robots (IRs) service framework is proposed, where non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique is adopted to enable highly reliable communications. In cooperation with the ultramodern indoor channel model recently proposed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Lego modeling method is proposed, which can deterministically describe the indoor layout and channel state in order to construct the radio map. The investigated radio map is invoked as a virtual environment to train the reinforcement learning agent, which can save training time and hardware costs. Build on the proposed communication model, motions of IRs who need to reach designated mission destinations and their corresponding down-link power allocation policy are jointly optimized to maximize the mission efficiency and communication reliability of IRs. In an effort to solve this optimization problem, a novel reinforcement learning approach named deep transfer deterministic policy gradient (DT-DPG) algorithm is proposed. Our simulation results demonstrate that 1) With the aid of NOMA techniques, the communication reliability of IRs is effectively improved; 2) The radio map is qualified to be a virtual training environment, and its statistical channel state information improves training efficiency by about 30%; 3) The proposed DT-DPG algorithm is superior to the conventional deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm in terms of optimization performance, training time, and anti-local optimum ability.

Resource Allocation for Multi-Cell IRS-Aided NOMA Networks

This paper proposes a novel framework of resource allocation in multi-cell intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks, where an IRS is deployed to enhance the wireless service. The problem of joint user association, subchannel assignment, power allocation, phase shifts design, and decoding order determination is formulated for maximizing the achievable sum rate. The challenging mixed-integer non-linear problem is decomposed into an optimization subproblem (P1) with continuous variables and a matching subproblem (P2) with integer variables. In an effort to tackle the non-convex optimization problem (P1), iterative algorithms are proposed for allocating transmission power, designing reflection matrix, and determining decoding order by invoking relaxation methods such as convex upper bound substitution, successive convex approximation, and semidefinite relaxation. In terms of the combinational problem (P2), swap matching-based algorithms are developed for achieving a two-sided exchange-stable state among users, BSs and subchannels. Numerical results demonstrate that: 1) the sum rate of multi-cell NOMA networks is capable of being increased by 35% with the aid of the IRS; 2) the proposed algorithms for multi-cell IRS-aided NOMA networks can enjoy 22% higher energy efficiency than conventional NOMA counterparts; 3) the trade-off between spectrum efficiency and coverage area can be tuned by judiciously selecting the location of the IRS.

A Novel Variable Stiffness Soft Robotic Gripper

We propose a novel tri-fingered soft robotic gripper with decoupled stiffness and shape control capability for performing adaptive grasping with minimum system complexity. The proposed soft fingers adaptively conform to object shapes facilitating the handling of objects of different types, shapes, and sizes. Each soft gripper finger has an inextensible articulable backbone and is actuated by pneumatic muscles. We derive a kinematic model of the gripper and use an empirical approach to map input pressures to stiffness and bending deformation of fingers. We use these mappings to achieve decoupled stiffness and shape control. We conduct tests to quantify the ability to hold objects as the gripper changes orientation, the ability to maintain the grasping status as the gripper moves, and the amount of force required to release the object from the gripped fingers, respectively. The results validate the proposed gripper's performance and show how stiffness control can improve the grasping quality.

Modeling and Validation of Soft Robotic Snake Locomotion

Snakes are a remarkable evolutionary success story. Many snake-inspired robots have been proposed over the years. Soft robotic snakes (SRS) with their continuous and smooth bending capability better mimic their biological counterparts' unique characteristics. Prior SRSs are limited to planar operation with a limited number of planar gaits. We propose a novel SRS with spatial bending and investigate snake locomotion gaits beyond the capabilities of the state-of-the-art systems. We derive a complete floating-base kinematic model of the robot and use the model to derive jointspace trajectories for serpentine and inward/outward rolling locomotion gaits. The locomotion gaits for the proposed SRS are experimentally validated under varying frequency and amplitude of gait cycles. The results qualitatively and quantitatively validate the SRS ability to leverage spatial bending to achieve locomotion gaits not possible with current SRS.

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning in NOMA-aided UAV Networks for Cellular Offloading

A novel framework is proposed for cellular offloading with the aid of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), while the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique is employed at each UAV to further improve the spectrum efficiency of the wireless network. The optimization problem of joint three-dimensional (3D) trajectory design and power allocation is formulated for maximizing the throughput. Since ground mobile users are considered as roaming continuously, the UAVs need to be re-deployed timely based on the movement of users. In an effort to solve this pertinent dynamic problem, a K-means based clustering algorithm is first adopted for periodically partitioning users. Afterward, a mutual deep Q-network (MDQN) algorithm is proposed to jointly determine the optimal 3D trajectory and power allocation of UAVs. In contrast to the conventional DQN algorithm, the MDQN algorithm enables the experience of multi-agent to be input into a shared neural network to shorten the training time with the assistance of state abstraction. Numerical results demonstrate that: 1) the proposed MDQN algorithm is capable of converging under minor constraints and has a faster convergence rate than the conventional DQN algorithm in the multi-agent case; 2) The achievable sum rate of the NOMA enhanced UAV network is 23% superior to the case of orthogonal multiple access (OMA); 3) By designing the optimal 3D trajectory of UAVs with the aid of the MDON algorithm, the sum rate of the network enjoys 142% and 56% gains than that of invoking the circular trajectory and the 2D trajectory, respectively.

Machine Learning Empowered Trajectory and Passive Beamforming Design in UAV-RIS Wireless Networks

A novel framework is proposed for integrating reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled wireless networks, where an RIS is deployed for enhancing the service quality of the UAV. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique is invoked to further improve the spectrum efficiency of the network, while mobile users (MUs) are considered as roaming continuously. The energy consumption minimizing problem is formulated by jointly designing the movement of the UAV, phase shifts of the RIS, power allocation policy from the UAV to MUs, as well as determining the dynamic decoding order. A decaying deep Q-network (D-DQN) based algorithm is proposed for tackling this pertinent problem. In the proposed D-DQN based algorithm, the central controller is selected as an agent for periodically observing the state of UAV-enabled wireless network and for carrying out actions to adapt to the dynamic environment. In contrast to the conventional DQN algorithm, the decaying learning rate is leveraged in the proposed D-DQN based algorithm for attaining a tradeoff between accelerating training speed and converging to the local optimal. Numerical results demonstrate that: 1) In contrast to the conventional Q-learning algorithm, which cannot converge when being adopted for solving the formulated problem, the proposed D-DQN based algorithm is capable of converging with minor constraints; 2) The energy dissipation of the UAV can be significantly reduced by integrating RISs in UAV-enabled wireless networks; 3) By designing the dynamic decoding order and power allocation policy, the RIS-NOMA case consumes 11.7% less energy than the RIS-OMA case.

An Ultra Lightweight CNN for Low Resource Circuit Component Recognition

In this paper, we present an ultra lightweight system that can effectively recognize different circuit components in an image with very limited training data. Along with the system, we also release the data set we created for the task. A two-stage approach is employed by our system. Selective search was applied to find the location of each circuit component. Based on its result, we crop the original image into smaller pieces. The pieces are then fed to the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for classification to identify each circuit component. It is of engineering significance and works well in circuit component recognition in a low resource setting. The accuracy of our system reaches 93.4\%, outperforming the support vector machine (SVM) baseline (75.00%) and the existing state-of-the-art RetinaNet solutions (92.80%).
