Ultra-sensitive solid-state organic molecular microwave quantum receiver

High-accuracy microwave sensing is widely demanded in various fields, ranging from cosmology to microwave quantum technology. Quantum receivers based on inorganic solid-state spin systems are promising candidates for such purpose because of the stability and compatibility, but their best sensitivity is currently limited to a few pT/$\sqrt{\rm{Hz}}$. Here, by utilising an enhanced readout scheme with the state-of-the-art solid-state maser technology, we develop a robust microwave quantum receiver functioned by organic molecular spins at ambient conditions. Owing to the maser amplification, the sensitivity of the receiver achieves 6.14 $\pm$ 0.17 fT/$\sqrt{\rm{Hz}}$ which exceeds three orders of magnitude than that of the inorganic solid-state quantum receivers. The heterodyne detection without additional local oscillators improves bandwidth of the receiver and allows frequency detection. The scheme can be extended to other solid-state spin systems without complicated control pulses and thus enables practical applications such as electron spin resonance spectroscopy, dark matter searches, and astronomical observations.

Interactive Trimming against Evasive Online Data Manipulation Attacks: A Game-Theoretic Approach

With the exponential growth of data and its crucial impact on our lives and decision-making, the integrity of data has become a significant concern. Malicious data poisoning attacks, where false values are injected into the data, can disrupt machine learning processes and lead to severe consequences. To mitigate these attacks, distance-based defenses, such as trimming, have been proposed, but they can be easily evaded by white-box attackers. The evasiveness and effectiveness of poisoning attack strategies are two sides of the same coin, making game theory a promising approach. However, existing game-theoretical models often overlook the complexities of online data poisoning attacks, where strategies must adapt to the dynamic process of data collection. In this paper, we present an interactive game-theoretical model to defend online data manipulation attacks using the trimming strategy. Our model accommodates a complete strategy space, making it applicable to strong evasive and colluding adversaries. Leveraging the principle of least action and the Euler-Lagrange equation from theoretical physics, we derive an analytical model for the game-theoretic process. To demonstrate its practical usage, we present a case study in a privacy-preserving data collection system under local differential privacy where a non-deterministic utility function is adopted. Two strategies are devised from this analytical model, namely, Tit-for-tat and Elastic. We conduct extensive experiments on real-world datasets, which showcase the effectiveness and accuracy of these two strategies.

From Text to Self: Users' Perceptions of Potential of AI on Interpersonal Communication and Self

In the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-mediated communication (AIMC), tools powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming integral to interpersonal communication. Employing a mixed-methods approach, we conducted a one-week diary and interview study to explore users' perceptions of these tools' ability to: 1) support interpersonal communication in the short-term, and 2) lead to potential long-term effects. Our findings indicate that participants view AIMC support favorably, citing benefits such as increased communication confidence, and finding precise language to express their thoughts, navigating linguistic and cultural barriers. However, the study also uncovers current limitations of AIMC tools, including verbosity, unnatural responses, and excessive emotional intensity. These shortcomings are further exacerbated by user concerns about inauthenticity and potential overreliance on the technology. Furthermore, we identified four key communication spaces delineated by communication stakes (high or low) and relationship dynamics (formal or informal) that differentially predict users' attitudes toward AIMC tools. Specifically, participants found the tool is more suitable for communicating in formal relationships than informal ones and more beneficial in high-stakes than low-stakes communication.

MindShift: Leveraging Large Language Models for Mental-States-Based Problematic Smartphone Use Intervention

Problematic smartphone use negatively affects physical and mental health. Despite the wide range of prior research, existing persuasive techniques are not flexible enough to provide dynamic persuasion content based on users' physical contexts and mental states. We first conducted a Wizard-of-Oz study (N=12) and an interview study (N=10) to summarize the mental states behind problematic smartphone use: boredom, stress, and inertia. This informs our design of four persuasion strategies: understanding, comforting, evoking, and scaffolding habits. We leveraged large language models (LLMs) to enable the automatic and dynamic generation of effective persuasion content. We developed MindShift, a novel LLM-powered problematic smartphone use intervention technique. MindShift takes users' in-the-moment app usage behaviors, physical contexts, mental states, goals \& habits as input, and generates personalized and dynamic persuasive content with appropriate persuasion strategies. We conducted a 5-week field experiment (N=25) to compare MindShift with its simplified version (remove mental states) and baseline techniques (fixed reminder). The results show that MindShift improves intervention acceptance rates by 4.7-22.5% and reduces smartphone usage duration by 7.4-9.8%. Moreover, users have a significant drop in smartphone addiction scale scores and a rise in self-efficacy scale scores. Our study sheds light on the potential of leveraging LLMs for context-aware persuasion in other behavior change domains.

Differential Aggregation against General Colluding Attackers

Local Differential Privacy (LDP) is now widely adopted in large-scale systems to collect and analyze sensitive data while preserving users' privacy. However, almost all LDP protocols rely on a semi-trust model where users are curious-but-honest, which rarely holds in real-world scenarios. Recent works show poor estimation accuracy of many LDP protocols under malicious threat models. Although a few works have proposed some countermeasures to address these attacks, they all require prior knowledge of either the attacking pattern or the poison value distribution, which is impractical as they can be easily evaded by the attackers. In this paper, we adopt a general opportunistic-and-colluding threat model and propose a multi-group Differential Aggregation Protocol (DAP) to improve the accuracy of mean estimation under LDP. Different from all existing works that detect poison values on individual basis, DAP mitigates the overall impact of poison values on the estimated mean. It relies on a new probing mechanism EMF (i.e., Expectation-Maximization Filter) to estimate features of the attackers. In addition to EMF, DAP also consists of two EMF post-processing procedures (EMF* and CEMF*), and a group-wise mean aggregation scheme to optimize the final estimated mean to achieve the smallest variance. Extensive experimental results on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the superior performance of DAP over state-of-the-art solutions.

Experimental investigation of quantum correlations in a two-qutrit spin system

We report an experimental investigation of quantum correlations in a two-qutrit spin system in a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond at room temperatures. Quantum entanglement between two qutrits was observed at room temperature and the existence of non-classical correlations beyond entanglement in the qutrit case has been revealed. Our work demonstrates the potential of the NV centers as the multi-qutrit system to execute quantum information tasks and provides a powerful experimental platform for studying fundamental physics of high-dimensional quantum systems in future.

Meta-Key: A Secure Data-Sharing Protocol under Blockchain-Based Decentralised Storage Architecture

In this letter we propose Meta-key, a data-sharing mechanism that enables users share their encrypted data under a blockchain-based decentralized storage architecture. All the data-encryption keys are encrypted by the owner's public key and put onto the blockchain for safe and secure storage and easy key-management. Encrypted data are stored in dedicated storage nodes and proxy re-encryption mechanism is used to ensure secure data-sharing in the untrusted environment. Security analysis of our model shows that the proxy re-encryption adopted in our system is naturally free from collusion-attack due to the specific architecture of Meta-key.

Matrix Bloom Filter: An Efficient Probabilistic Data Structure for 2-tuple Batch Lookup

With the growing scale of big data, probabilistic structures receive increasing popularity for efficient approximate storage and query processing. For example, Bloom filters (BF) can achieve satisfactory performance for approximate membership existence query at the expense of false positives. However, a standard Bloom filter can only handle univariate data and single membership existence query, which is insufficient for OLAP and machine learning applications. In this paper, we focus on a common multivariate data type, namely, 2-tuples, or equivalently, key-value pairs. We design the matrix Bloom filter as a high-dimensional extension of the standard Bloom filter. This new probabilistic data structure can not only insert and lookup a single 2-tuple efficiently, but also support these operations efficiently in batches --- a key requirement for OLAP and machine learning tasks. To further balance the insertion and query efficiency for different workload patterns, we propose two variants, namely, the maximum adaptive matrix BF and minimum storage matrix BF. Through both theoretical and empirical studies, we show the performance of matrix Bloom filter is superior on datasets with common statistical distributions; and even without them, it just degrades to a standard Bloom filter.

Introduction of Improved Repairing Locality into Secret Sharing Schemes with Perfect Security

Repairing locality is an appreciated feature for distributed storage, in which a damaged or lost data share can be repaired by accessing a subset of other shares much smaller than is required for decoding the complete data. However for Secret Sharing (SS) schemes, it has been proven theoretically that local repairing can not be achieved with perfect security for the majority of threshold SS schemes, where all the shares are equally regarded in both secret recovering and share repairing. In this paper we make an attempt on decoupling the two processes to make secure local repairing possible. Dedicated repairing redundancies only for the repairing process are generated, which are random numbers to the original secret. Through this manner a threshold SS scheme with improved repairing locality is achieved on the condition that security of repairing redundancies is ensured, or else our scheme degenerates into a perfect access structure that is equivalent to the best existing schemes can do. To maximize security of the repairing redundancies, a random placement mechanism is also proposed.

Experimental protection of the coherence of a molecular qubit exceeding a millisecond

There are several important solid-state systems, such as defects in solids, superconducting circuits and molecular qubits, for attractive candidates of quantum computations. Molecular qubits, which benefit from the power of chemistry for the tailored and inexpensive synthesis of new systems, face the challenge from decoherence effect. The decoherence effect is due to the molecular qubits' inevitable interactions to their environment. Strategies to overcome decoherence effect have been developed, such as designing a nuclear spin free environment and working at atomic clock transitions. These chemical approaches, however, have some fundamental limitations. For example, chemical approach restricts the ligand selection and design to ligands with zero nuclear magnetic dipole moment, such as carbon, oxygen, and sulfur. Herein, a physical approach, named Dynamical decoupling (DD), is utilized to combat decoherence, while the limitations of the chemical approaches can be avoided. The phase memory time $T_2$ for a transition metal complex has been prolonged to exceed one millisecond ($1.4~$ms) by employing DD. The single qubit figure of merit $Q_M $ reaches $ 1.4\times 10^5$, which is $40$ times better than that previously reported value for such system. Our results show that molecular qubits, with milliseconds $T_2$, are promising candidates for quantum information processing.
