Implication of $\sin 2β$ from global fit and $B\to J/ψK_S$

The measurement of $\sin 2 β$ is discussed within and beyond the standard model. In the presence of new physics, the angle $β$ extracted from the global fit(denoted by $β^{SM}_{fit}$) and the one extracted from $B\to J/ψK_S$ (denoted by $β_{J/ψ}$) are in general all different from the 'true' angle $β$ which is the weak phase of CKM matrix element $V^*_{td}$. Possible new physics effects on the ratio $R_β=\sin2β_{J/ψ}/\sin 2β^{SM}_{fit}$ is studied and parameterized in a most general form. It is shown that the ratio $R_β$ may provide a useful tool in probing new physics. The experimental value of $R_β$ is obtained through an update of the global fit of the unitarity triangle with the latest data and found to be less than unity at 1$σ$ level. The new physics effects on $R_β$ from the models with minimum flavor violation (MFV) and the standard model with two-Higgs-doublet (S2HDM) are studied in detail. It is found that the MFV models seem to give a relative large value $R_β\geq 1$. With the current data, this may indicate that this kind of new physics may be disfavored and alternative new physics with additional phases appears more relevant. As an illustration for models with additional phase beyond CKM phase, the S2HDM effects on $R_β$ are studied and found to be easily coincide with the data due to the flavor changing neutral Higgs interaction.

A New Prediction for Direct CP Violation ε'/εand ΔI = 1/2 Rule

The low energy dynamics of QCD is investigated with special attention paid to the matching between QCD and chiral perturbation theory(ChPT), and also to some useful algebraic chiral operator relations which survive even when we include chiral loop corrections. It then allows us to evaluate the hadronic matrix elements below the energy scale $Λ_χ \simeq 1$ GeV. Based on the new analyzes, we present a consistent prediction for both direct CP-violating parameter $ε'/ε$ and $ΔI =1/2$ rule in the kaon decays. In the leading $1/N_c$ approximation, the isospin amplitudes $A_0$ and $A_2$ are found to agree well with the data, and the direct CP-violating parameter $ε'/ε$ is predicted to be large, which also confirms our early conclusion. Its numerical value is $ε'/ε= 23.6^{+12.4}_{-7.8}\times 10^{-4}(Imλ_t/1.2\times 10^{-4})$ which is no longer sensitive to the strange quark mass due to the matching conditions. Taking into account a simultaneous consistent analysis on the isospin amplitudes $A_0$ and $A_2$, the ratio $ε'/ε$ is in favor of the values $ε'/ε= (20\pm 9)\times 10^{-4}$.

Flavor Symmetry and Neutrino Oscillations

We show how the nearly bi-maximal mixing scenario comes out naturally from gauged $SO(3)_{F}$ flavor symmetry via spontaneous symmetry breaking. An interesting relation between the neutrino mass-squared differences and the mixing angle, i.e., $Δm_{μe}^2 / Δm_{τμ}^2 \simeq 2|U_{e 3}|^2 $ is obtained. The smallness of the ratio (or $|U_{e 3}|$) can also naturally be understood from an approximate permutation symmetry. Once the mixing element $|U_{e 3}|$ is determined, such a relation will tell us which solution will be favored within this model. The model can also lead to interesting phenomena on lepton-flavor violations.

Constraints on the Mass and Mixing of the 4th Generation Quark From Direct CP Violation$ε^{\prime}/ε$ and Rare K Decays

We investigate the $ε^{\prime} /ε$ for $K\to ππ$ in a sequential fourth generation model. By giving the basic formulae for $ε^{\prime}/ε$ in this model, we analyze the numerical results which are dependent of $m_{t^{\prime}}$ and imaginary part of the fourth CKM factor, ${Im}V^{*}_{t^{'}s}V_{t^{'}d}$ (or $V^{*}_{t^{'}s}V_{t^{'}d}$ and the fourth generation CKM matrix phase $θ$). We find that, unlike the SM, when taking the central values of all parameters for $ε^{\prime}/ε$, the values of $ε^{\prime}/ ε$ can easily fit to the current experimental data for all values of hadronic matrix elements estimated from various approaches. Also, we show that the experimental values of $ε^{\prime}/ε$ and rare K decays can provide a strong constraint on both mass and mixing of the fourth generation quark. When taking the values of hadronic matrix elements from the lattice or 1/N expansion calculations, a large region of the up-type quark mass $m_{t^{\prime}}$ is excluded.

Spontaneous Breaking of Flavor Symmetry and Naturalness of Nearly Degenerate Neutrino Masses and Bi-maximal Mixing

The gauge model with $SO(3)_{F}$ flavor symmetry and three Higgs triplets is studied. We show how the intriguing nearly degenerate neutrino mass and bi-maximal mixing scenario comes out naturally after spontaneous breaking of the symmetry. The hierarchy between the neutrino mass-squared differences, which is needed for reconciling both solar and atmospheric neutrino data, is naturally resulted from an approximate permutation symmetry. The model can also lead to interesting phenomena on lepton-flavor violations via the $SO(3)_{F}$ gauge interactions.

Weak Phase $γ$ and Strong Phase $δ$ from CP Averaged $B\to ππ$ and $πK$ Decays

Assuming SU(3) symmetry for the strong phases in the four decay modes $B\rarrow π^-π^+, π^0 π^+, π^- K^+, π^- \bar{K}^0$ and ignoring the relative small electroweak penguin effects in those decays, the weak phase $γ$ and the strong phase $δ$ can be determined in a model independent way by the CP-averaged branching ratios of the four decay modes. It appears that the current experimental data for $B\to ππ$ and $πK$ decays prefer a negative value of $\cosγ\cosδ$. By combining with the other constraints from $V_{ub}$, $B^{0}_{d,s}-\bar{B}^{0}_{d,s}$ mixings and indirect CP-violating parameter $ε_K$ within the standard model, two favorable solutions for the phases $γ$ and $δ$ are found to lie in the region: $35^{\circ}\altγ\alt 62^{\circ}$ and $106^{\circ}\alt δ\alt 180^{\circ}$ or $86^{\circ}\altγ\alt 151^{\circ}$ and $0^{\circ}\altδ\alt 75^{\circ} $ within 1$σ$ standard deviation. It is noted that if allowing the standard deviation of the data to be more than 1$σ$, the two solutions could approach to one solution with a much larger region for the phases $γ$ and $δ$. Direct CP asymme try $a_{ε''}^{(π^- K^+)}$ in $B\rarrow π^-K^+$ decay can be as large as the present experimental upper bound. Direct CP asymmetry $a_{ε''}^{(π^+π^-)}$ in $B\rarrow π^-π^+$ decay can reach up to about 40% at 1$σ$ level.

The $B\to X_sl^+l^-$ and $B\to X_s γ$ decays with the fourth generation

If the fourth generation fermions exist, the new quarks could influence the branching ratios of the decays of $B\to X_s γ$ and $B\to X_sl^+l^-$. We obtain two solutions of the fourth generation CKM factor $V^{*}_{t^{'}s}V_{t^{'}b}$ from the decay of $B\to X_s γ$. We use these two solutions to calculate the new contributions of the fourth generation quark to Wilson coefficients of the decay of $B\to X_sl^+l^-$. The branching ratio and the forward-backward asymmetry of the decay of $B\to X_sl^+l^-$ in the two cases are calculated. Our results are quite different from that of SM in one case, almost same in another case. If Nature chooses the formmer, the $B$ meson decays could provide a possible test of the forth generation existence.

SO(3) Gauge model for neutrino masses and oscillations

I mainly describe neutrino masses and oscillations in the gauge model with $SO(3)_{F}$ lepton flavor symmetry and with two Higgs triplets. It is shown how the maximal mixing between $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ neutrinos comes out naturally after spontaneous breaking of the symmetry. The nearly two-flavor mixing scenario is resulted naturally from an approximate permutation symmetry between the two Higgs triplets. The hierarchy between the neutrino mass-squared differences, which is needed for reconciling both solar and atmospheric neutrino data, leads to an almost maximal mixing between $ν_{e}$ and $ν_μ$ neutrinos. Thus the model favors the intriguing bi-maximal mixing scenario. The three Majorana neutrino masses are allowed to be nearly degenerate and large enough to play a significant cosmological role. The model can also lead to interesting phenomena on lepton-flavor violations via the $SO(3)_{F}$ gauge interactions.

Two/Three-Flavor Oscillation and MSW/Vacuum Oscillation Solution of Neutrinos in the SO(3) Gauge Model

Three interesting scenarios for neutrino mixing, i.e., (i) small-large mixing scenario, (ii) nearly bi-maximal mixing scenario and (iii) three-flavor oscillation scenario, are analyzed in connection with three possible assignments of the maximal CP-violating phase after spontaneous symmetry breaking of SO(3) in a model with gauged SO(3) lepton flavor symmetry. As a consequence, it is found that the scenario (ii) is more reliable to be resulted in reconciling both solar and atmospheric neutrino data. Though three Majorana neutrino masses in all scenarios can be nearly degenerate, in the scenarios (ii) and (iii) masses of the neutrinos are allowed to be large enough to play a significant cosmological role and in the scenario (i) the fraction $Ω_ν/Ω_{m}$ is bounded to be $Ω_ν/Ω_{m} < (4-10)%$ for $Ω_{m} = (1.0-0.4)$ and $h=0.6$.

Renormalization-Group Effects in the SO(3) Gauge Model With Nearly Degenerate Neutrino Masses and Bi-maximal Mixing

The renormalization-group effects on the scenario with nearly degenerate mass and bi-maximal mixing of neutrinos are analyzed. As a consequence, we explicitly show in the SO(3) gauge model that the renormalization-group effects could modify the fitting values of the relevant basic parameters of the model, but leave the nearly bi-maximal mixing scenario to remain stable for reconciling both solar and atmospheric neutrino data. The approximately degenerate Majorana neutrino masses are allowed to be large enough to play a significant cosmological role without conflicting with the current neutrinoless double beta decay.

Nearly Degenerate Mass and Bi-maximal Mixing of Neutrinos in the SO(3) Gauge Model of Leptons

A realistic scheme for masses and mixing of leptons is investigated in the model with gauged SO(3) lepton flavor symmetry. Within this scheme, a nearly `bi-maximal' neutrino mixing pattern with maximal CP-violating phase is found to be the only possible solution for reconciling both solar and atmospheric neutrino flux anomalies. Three Majorana neutrino masses are nearly degenerate and allow to be large enough to play a significant cosmological role. Lepton flavor-violating effects via SO(3) gauge interactions can be as large as the present experimental limits. Masses of the SO(3) gauge bosons are bounded to be above 24 TeV when taking the SO(3) gauge boson mixing angle $θ_{F}$ and coupling constant $g'_{3}$ to be the same as those ($θ_{W}$ and $g$) in the electroweak theory.

SO(3) Gauge Symmetry and Neutrino-Lepton Flavor Physics

Based on the SO(3) gauge symmetry for three family leptons and general see-saw mechanism, we present a simple scheme that allows three nearly degenerate Majorana neutrino masses needed for hot dark matter. The vacuum structure of the spontaneous SO(3) symmetry breaking can automatically lead to a maximal CP-violating phase. Thus the current neutrino data on both the atmospheric neutrino anomaly and solar neutrino deficit can be accounted for via maximal mixings without conflict with the current data on the neutrinoless double beta decay. The model also allows rich interesting phenomena on lepton flavor violations.

Probing New Physics From CP Violation in Radiative B Decays

When new CP-violating interactions are dominated by flavor changing neutral particle exchanges, that may occur in many extensions of the standard model. We examine a type 3 two Higgs doublet model and find that direct CP asymmetries can be as large as about 25% . Time-dependent and time-integrated mixing-induced CP asymmetries up to 85 and 40 %, respectively, are possible without conflict with other constraints. It mainly requirs an enhanced chromo-magnetic dipole $b\to sg$ decay to be close to the present experimental bound.

Predictive SUSY SO(10) X Delta (48) X U(1) Model for CP Violation, Neutrino Oscillation, Fermion Masses and Mixings with Small tan(beta)

CP violation, fermion masses and mixing angles including that of neutrinos are studied in an SUSY SO(10)$\times Δ(48)\times$ U(1) model with small $\tan β$. The family symmetry $Δ(48)$ associated with a simple scheme of U(1) charge assignment on various fields concerned in superpotential leads to unique Yukawa coupling matrices with zero textures. Thirteen parameters involving masses and mixing angles in the quark and charged lepton sector are successfully predicted by only four parameters. The masses and mixing angles for the neutrino sector can also be predicted without involving new parameters. It is found that the atmospheric neutrino deficit, the mass limit put by hot dark matter and the LSND $\barν_μ \to \barν_{e}$ events can be naturally explained. Solar neutrino puzzle can be solved only by introducing a sterile neutrino. An additional parameter is added to obtain the mass and mixing of the sterile neutrino. The hadronic parameters $B_{K}$ and $f_{B}\sqrt{B}$ are extracted from the observed $K^{0}$-$\bar{K}^{0}$ and $B^{0}$-$\bar{B}^{0}$ mixings respectively. The direct CP violation ($ε'/ε$) in kaon decays and the three angles $α$, $β$ and $γ$ of the unitarity triangle in the CKM matrix are also presented. More precise measurements of $α_{s}(M_{Z})$, $|V_{cb}|$, $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$, $m_{t}$, as well as various CP violation and neutrino oscillation experiments will provide an important test for the present model and guide us to a more fundamental theory.

A solution to the puzzles of CP violation, neutrino oscillation, fermion masses and mixings in an SUSY GUT model with small $tan β$

CP violation, fermion masses and mixing angles including that of neutrinos are studied in an SUSY SO(10)$\times Δ(48) \times$ U(1) model with small $tan β$. It is amazing that the model can provide a successful prediction on twenty three observables by only using four parameters. The renormalization group (RG) effects containing those above the GUT scale are considered. Fifteen relations among the low energy parameters are found with nine of them free from RG modifications. They could be tested directly by low energy experiments.
