EgoInstruct: An Egocentric Video Dataset of Face-to-face Instructional Interactions with Multi-modal LLM Benchmarking

Analyzing instructional interactions between an instructor and a learner who are co-present in the same physical space is a critical problem for educational support and skill transfer. Yet such face-to-face instructional scenes have not been systematically studied in computer vision. We identify two key reasons: i) the lack of suitable datasets and ii) limited analytical techniques. To address this gap, we present a new egocentric video dataset of face-to-face instruction and provide ground-truth annotations for two fundamental tasks that serve as a first step toward a comprehensive understanding of instructional interactions: procedural step segmentation and conversation-state classification. Using this dataset, we benchmark multimodal large language models (MLLMs) against conventional task-specific models. Since face-to-face instruction involves multiple modalities (speech content and prosody, gaze and body motion, and visual context), effective understanding requires methods that handle verbal and nonverbal communication in an integrated manner. Accordingly, we evaluate recently introduced MLLMs that jointly process images, audio, and text. This evaluation quantifies the extent to which current machine learning models understand face-to-face instructional scenes. In experiments, MLLMs outperform specialized baselines even without task-specific fine-tuning, suggesting their promise for holistic understanding of instructional interactions.

Leadership Assessment in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Team Training

This paper addresses the task of assessing PICU team's leadership skills by developing an automated analysis framework based on egocentric vision. We identify key behavioral cues, including fixation object, eye contact, and conversation patterns, as essential indicators of leadership assessment. In order to capture these multimodal signals, we employ Aria Glasses to record egocentric video, audio, gaze, and head movement data. We collect one-hour videos of four simulated sessions involving doctors with different roles and levels. To automate data processing, we propose a method leveraging REMoDNaV, SAM, YOLO, and ChatGPT for fixation object detection, eye contact detection, and conversation classification. In the experiments, significant correlations are observed between leadership skills and behavioral metrics, i.e., the output of our proposed methods, such as fixation time, transition patterns, and direct orders in speech. These results indicate that our proposed data collection and analysis framework can effectively solve skill assessment for training PICU teams.

Ferroelectricity of Wurtzite Al$_{1-x}$Hf$_{x}$N Heterovalent Alloys

Thin films of aluminum hafnium nitride (Al$_{1-x}$Hf$_{x}$N) were synthesized via reactive magnetron sputtering for Hf contents up to $x$ = 0.13. X-ray diffraction showed a single $c$-axis oriented wurtzite phase for all films. Hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated homogeneous Al:Hf distribution through the thin films and confirmed their insulating character. A collection of complementary tests showed unambiguous polarization inversion, and thus ferroelectricity in multiple samples. Current density vs. electric field hysteresis measurements showed distinct ferroelectric switching current peaks, the piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33,f,meas}$ measured using a double beam laser interferometer (DBLI) showed a reversal in sign with similar magnitude, and anisotropic wet etching confirmed field-induced polarization inversion. This demonstrates the possibility of using tetravalent--and not just trivalent--alloying elements to enable ferroelectricity in AlN-based thin films, highlighting the compositional flexibility of ferroelectricity in wurtzites and greatly expanding the chemistries that can be considered for future devices.

Mixed anion control of enhanced negative thermal expansion in the oxysulfide of PbTiO3

The rare physical property of negative thermal expansion (NTE) is intriguing because materials with large NTE over a wide temperature range can serve as high-performance thermal expansion compensators. However, applications of NTE are hindered by the fact that most of the available NTE materials show small magnitudes of NTE, and/or NTE occurs only in a narrow temperature range. Herein, for the first time, we investigated the effect of anion substitution instead of general Pb/Ti-site substitutions on the thermal expansion properties of a typical ferroelectric NTE material, PbTiO3. Intriguingly, the substitution of S for O in PbTiO3 further increases the tetragonality of PbTiO3. Consequently, an unusually enhanced NTE with an average volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion $\barα_V$ = -2.50 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$/K was achieved over a wide temperature range (300 -- 790 K), which is contrasted to that of pristine PbTiO3 ($\barα_V$ = -1.99 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$/K RT -- 763 K). The intensified NTE is attributed to the enhanced hybridization between Pb/Ti and O/S atoms by the substitution of S, as evidenced by our theoretical investigations. We therefore demonstrate a new technique for introducing mixed anions to achieve large NTE over a wide temperature range in PbTiO3-based ferroelectrics.

Mechanism of intermetallic charge transfer and bond disproportionation in BiNiO$_3$ and PbNiO$_3$ revealed by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy

Perovskites with Bi or Pb on the A-site host a number of interesting and yet to be understood phenomena such as negative thermal expansion in BiNiO$_3$. We employ hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy of Ni 2$p$ core-level as well as valence band to probe the electronic structure of BiNiO$_3$ and PbNiO$_3$. The experimental results supported by theoretical calculations using dynamical mean-field theory reveal essentially identical electronic structure of the Ni-O subsystem typical of Ni$^{2+}$ charge-transfer insulators. The two materials are distinguished by filling of the Bi(Pb)-O antibonding states in the vicinity of the Fermi level, which is responsible for the Bi disproportionation in BiNiO$_3$ at ambient pressure and absence of similar behavior in PbNiO$_3$. The present experiments provide evidence for this conclusion by revealing the presence/absence of Bi/Pb $6s$ states at the top of the valence band in the two materials.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in a novel germanium allotrope

High-pressure studies on elements play an essential role in superconductivity research, with implications for both fundamental science and applications. Here we report the experimental discovery of surprisingly low pressure driving a novel germanium allotrope into a superconducting state in comparison to that for alpha-Ge. Raman measurements revealed structural phase transitions and possible electronic topological transitions under pressure up to 58 GPa. Based on pressure-dependent resistivity measurements, superconductivity was induced above 2 GPa and the maximum Tc of 6.8 K was observed under 4.6 GPa. Interestingly, a superconductivity enhancement was discovered during decompression, indicating the possibility of maintaining pressure-induced superconductivity at ambient pressure with better superconducting performance. Density functional theory analysis further suggested that the electronic structure of Ge (oP32) is sensitive to its detailed geometry and revealed that disorder in the beta-tin structure leads to a higher Tc in comparison to the perfect beta-tin Ge.

Magnetization controlled by crystallization in soft magnetic Fe-Si-B-P-Cu alloys

Soft magnetic materials have low coercive fields and high permeability. Recently, nanocrystalline alloys obtained using annealing amorphous alloys have attracted much interest since nanocrystalline alloys with small grain sizes of tens of nanometers exhibit low coercive fields comparable to that of amorphous alloys. Since nanocrystalline soft magnetic materials attain remarkable soft magnetic properties by controlling the grain size, the crystal grains' microstructure has a substantial influence on the soft magnetic properties. In this research, we examined the magnetic properties of Fe-Si-B-P-Cu nanocrystalline soft magnetic alloys obtained by annealing amorphous alloys. During crystallization, the observation findings reveal the correlation between the generated microstructures and soft magnetic properties.

Mathematical Model of Emotional Habituation to Novelty: Modeling with Bayesian Update and Information Theory

Novelty is an important factor of creativity in product design. Acceptance of novelty, however, depends on one's emotions. Yanagisawa, the last author, and his colleagues previously developed a mathematical model of emotional dimensions associated with novelty such as arousal (surprise) and valence. The model formalized arousal as Bayesian information gain and valence as a function of arousal based on Berlyne's arousal potential theory. One becomes accustomed to novelty by repeated exposure. This so-called habituation to novelty is important in the design of long-term product experience. We herein propose a mathematical model of habituation to novelty based on the emotional dimension model. We formalized the habituation as a decrement in information gain from a novel event through Bayesian update. We derived the information gained from the repeated exposure of a novel stimulus as a function of three parameters: initial prediction error, initial uncertainty, and noise of sensory stimulus. With the proposed model, we discovered an interaction effect of the initial prediction error and initial uncertainty on habituation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a range of positive emotions on prediction errors shift toward becoming more novel by repeated exposure.

Quantitative evaluation of sense of discrepancy to operation response using event-related potential

This study aimed to develop a method to evaluate the sense of discrepancy to the operation response quantitatively. We examined the availability of event-related potential (P300), which is considered to reflect attention to stimulation, to evaluate the sense of discrepancy to the product response to the user's action. In the experiment using subjective evaluation and P300 to investigate the sense of discrepancy due to the lack of operation response (sound and vibration) to the shutter operation of the mirrorless single-lens camera, it was confirmed that P300 amplitude corresponds to the degree of the subjective sense of discrepancy. Our results showed that the P300 amplitude could evaluate the sense of discrepancy to the operation response.

Giant Negative Thermal Expansion Induced by the Synergistic Effects of Ferroelectrostriction and Spin-Crossover in PbTiO3-Based Perovskites

The discovery of unusual negative thermal expansion (NTE) provides the opportunity to control the common but much desired property of thermal expansion, which is valuable not only in scientific interests but also in practical applications. However, most of the available NTE materials are limited to a narrow temperature range, and the NTE effect is generally weakened by means of various modifications. Here, we report an enhanced NTE effect that occurs over a wide temperature range (αV = -5.24 * 10-5 °C^-1, 25-575 ° C), and this NTE effect is accompanied by an abnormal enhanced tetragonality, a large spontaneous polarization, and a G-type antiferromagnetic ordering in the present perovskite-type ferroelectric of (1-x)PbTiO3-xBiCoO3. Specifically, for the composition of 0.5PbTiO3-0.5BiCoO3, an extensive volumetric contraction of ~4.8 % has been observed near the Curie temperature of 700 °C, which represents the highest level in PbTiO3-based ferroelectrics. According to our experimental and theoretical results, the giant NTE originates from a synergistic effect of the ferroelectrostriction and spin-crossover of cobalt on the crystal lattice. The actual NTE mechanism is contrasted with previous functional NTE materials, in which the NTE is simply coupled with one ordering such as electronic, magnetic, or ferroelectric ordering. The present study sheds light on the understanding of NTE mechanisms and it attests that NTE could be simultaneouslycoupled with different orderings, which will pave a new way toward the design of large NTE materials.

Extraction of $|V_{cb}|$ from two-body hadronic B decays

We propose a method of extracting the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ from two-body hadronic decay processes of $B\to DK$ with precisely determined form factors of $B$ meson semi-leptonic decays. The amplitude $\mathcal{M}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^+ K^-)$ which does not include the effect of hadronic final state interactions can be theoretically evaluated by using factorization and form factors of semi-leptonic B decays. We can obtain all the amplitudes in an isospin relation $\mathcal{A}(B^-\to D^0K^-) =\mathcal{A}(\bar{B}^0\to D^+K^{-})+\mathcal{A}(\bar{B}^0\to D^{0}\bar{K}^0)$ including the effect of hadronic final state interactions as well as $|V_{cb}|$ using the experimental data of branching fractions of these three processes with a truncation of the states which contribute to the hadronic final state interactions. The extracted value of $|V_{cb}|$ is $(37\pm 6)\times 10^{-3}$. The decay processes of $B\to DK^{*}$ and $B\to D^{*}K$ can also be used in the same way and the extracted values of $|V_{cb}|$ are $(41\pm 7)\times 10^{-3}$ and $(42\pm 9)\times 10^{-3}$, respectively. This method becomes possible by virtue of recent precise determinations of the form factors of semi-leptonic B decays. The uncertainties of $|V_{cb}|$ by this method are expected to be reduced by the results of future B-factory experiments and lattice calculations.

Magnetism in amorphous carbon

We investigate magnetism in amorphous carbon as suggested by the recently reported ferromagnetism in a new form of amorphous carbon. We use spin constrained first-principles simulations to obtain amorphous carbon structures with the desired magnetization. We show that the existence of $sp^2$-like 3-fold coordinated carbon atoms plays an important role in obtaining magnetism in amorphous carbon. The detailed geometries of 3-fold carbon atoms induce the magnetic order in amorphous carbon.

An approach to the instanton effect in B system

We discuss the constraint on the size of QCD instanton effects in low-energy effective theory. Among various instanton effects in meson mass spectrum and dynamics, we concentrate on the instanton-induced masses of light quarks. The famous instanton-induced six-quark interaction, so-called 't Hooft vertex, could give non-perturbative quantum corrections to light quark masses. Many works have already been achieved to constrain the mass corrections in light meson system, or the system of pi, K, eta and eta', and now we know for a fact that the instanton-induced mass of up-quark is too small to realize the solution of the strong CP problem by vanishing current mass of up-quark. In this work we give a constraint on the instanton-induced mass correction to light quarks from the mass spectrum of heavy mesons, B+, B0, Bs and their anti-particles. To accomplish this, the complete second order chiral symmetry breaking terms are identified in heavy meson effective theory. We find that the strength of the constraint from heavy meson masses is at the same level of that from light mesons, and it would be made even stronger by more precise data from future B factories and lattice calculations.

Simulating the effect of boron doping in superconducting carbon

We examine the effect of boron doping in superconducting forms of amorphous carbon. By judiciously optimizing boron substitutional sites in simulated amorphous carbon we predict a superconducting transition temperature near 37 K at 14 % boron concentration. Our findings have direct implications for understanding the recently discovered high T_$c$ superconductivity in Q-carbon.

A neural marker of obsessive-compulsive disorder from whole-brain functional connectivity

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common psychiatric disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 2-3 percent. Recently, brain activity in the resting state is gathering attention as a new means of exploring altered functional connectivity in psychiatric disorders. Although previous resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging studies investigated neurobiological abnormalities of patients with OCD, there are concerns that should be addressed. One concern is the validity of the hypothesis employed. Most studies used seed-based analysis of the fronto-striatal circuit, despite the potential for abnormalities in other regions. A hypothesis-free study is a promising approach in such a case, while it requires researchers to handle a dataset with large dimensions. Another concern is the reliability of biomarkers derived from a single dataset, which may be influenced by cohort-specific features. Here, by employing a recently developed machine-learning algorithm to avoid these concerns, we identified the first OCD biomarker that is generalized to an external dataset. We also demonstrated that the functional connectivities that contributed to the classification were widely distributed rather than locally constrained. Our generalizable classifier has the potential not only to deepen our understanding of the abnormal neural substrates of OCD but also to find use in clinical applications.

Constraints on gauge-Higgs unification models at the LHC

We examine the possibility of observing the Kaluza-Klein gluons in gauge-Higgs unification models at the LHC with the energy sqrt{s}=14 TeV. We consider a benchmark model with the gauge symmetry SU(3)_C x SU(3)_W in five-dimensional space-time, where SU(3)_C is the gauge symmetry of the strong interaction and SU(3)_W is that for the electroweak interaction and a Higgs doublet field. It is natural in general to introduce SU(3)_C gauge symmetry in five-dimensional space-time as well as SU(3)_W gauge symmetry in gauge-Higgs unification models. Since the fifth dimension is compactified to S1/Z2 orbifold, there are Kaluza-Klein modes of gluons in low-energy effective theory in four-dimensional space-time. We investigate the resonance contribution of the first Kaluza-Klein gluon to dijet invariant mass distribution at the LHC, and provide signal-to-noise ratios in various cases of Kaluza-Klein gluon masses and kinematical cuts. Although the results are given in a specific benchmark model, we discuss their application to general gauge-Higgs unification models with Kaluza-Klein gluons. Gauge-Higgs unification models can be verified or constrained through the physics of the strong interaction, though they are proposed to solve the naturalness problem in electroweak symmetry breaking.

Structural stability and energy-gap modulation through atomic protrusion in freestanding bilayer silicene

We report on first-principles total-energy and phonon calculations that clarify structural stability and electronic properties of freestanding bilayer silicene. By extensive structural exploration, we reach all the stable structures reported before and find four new dynamically stable structures, including the structure with the largest cohesive energy. We find that atomic protrusion from the layer is the principal relaxation pattern which stabilizes bilayer silicene and determines the lateral periodicity. The hybrid-functional calculation shows that the most stable bilayer silicene is a semiconductor with the energy gap of 1.3 eV.

Effect of Sn-substitution on Thermoelectric Properties of Copper-based Sulfide, Famatinite Cu3SbS4

Copper-based sulfide is an attractive material for Earth-abundant thermoelectrics. In this study, we demonstrate the effect of Sn-substitution on the electrical and thermal transport properties of fematinite Cu3SbS4 from 300 to 573 K. The carrier concentration is controlled in the range from 4 \times 10^18 to 8 \times 10^20 cm^-3 by Sn-substitution. The density-of-states effective mass is found to be ~3.0 me, assuming the single parabolic band model. The direct-type optical band gap is ~0.9 eV, which is consistent with the density functional theory calculation. The dimensionless figure of merit reaches 0.1 for Sn-doped samples at 573 K.
