Apple Intelligence Foundation Language Models: Tech Report 2025

We introduce two multilingual, multimodal foundation language models that power Apple Intelligence features across Apple devices and services: i a 3B-parameter on-device model optimized for Apple silicon through architectural innovations such as KV-cache sharing and 2-bit quantization-aware training; and ii a scalable server model built on a novel Parallel-Track Mixture-of-Experts PT-MoE transformer that combines track parallelism, mixture-of-experts sparse computation, and interleaved global-local attention to deliver high quality with competitive cost on Apple's Private Cloud Compute platform. Both models are trained on large-scale multilingual and multimodal datasets sourced via responsible web crawling, licensed corpora, and high-quality synthetic data, then further refined with supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning on a new asynchronous platform. The resulting models support several additional languages while understanding images and executing tool calls. In public benchmarks and human evaluations, both the server model and the on-device model match or surpass comparably sized open baselines. A new Swift-centric Foundation Models framework exposes guided generation, constrained tool calling, and LoRA adapter fine-tuning, allowing developers to integrate these capabilities with a few lines of code. The latest advancements in Apple Intelligence models are grounded in our Responsible AI approach with safeguards like content filtering and locale-specific evaluation, as well as our commitment to protecting our users' privacy with innovations like Private Cloud Compute.

A Practical Consideration on Convex Mutual Information

In this paper, we focus on the convex mutual information, which was found at the lowest level split in multilevel coding schemes with communications over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Theoretical analysis shows that communication achievable rates (ARs) do not necessarily below mutual information in the convex region. In addition, simulation results are provided as an evidence.

Application of Opportunistic Bit to Multilevel Codes

In this paper, we propose a new signal organization method to work in the structure of the multi level coding (MLC). The transmit bits are divided into opportunistic bit (OB) and conventional bit (CB), which are mapped to the lower level- and higher level signal in parallel to the MLC, respectively. Because the OB's mapping does not require signal power explicitly, the energy of the CB modulated symbol can be doubled. As the result, the overall mutual information of the proposed method is found higher than that of the conventional BPSK in one dimensional case. Moreover, the extension of the method to the two-complex-dimension shows the better performance over the QPSK. The numerical results confirm this approach.

A Signal Separation Method for Exceeding the Channel Capacity of BPSK Input

The field of the coded modulations witnessed its golden era as the simulated achievable bit rates (ABRs) were getting close to the channel capacities of the finite alphabet inputs. However, when working at a single channel, the previous researches are mostly restricted in scope of single input and single output. In contrast, for achieving higher spectral efficiency, the present authors propose a method that builds upon the parallel transmission of two signals that are separated at the receiver. The signal separation is enabled by, so called, the double mapping modulation working through Hamming- to Euclidean space. Consequently, the ABR summation of the two signals is found higher the channel capacity of BPSK input. Both the theoretical- and simulation result confirm this approach.

Beyond the Channel Capacity of BPSK Input

The paper proposed a method that organizes a parallel transmission of two signals to be separated from each other at receiver through Hamming- to Euclidean space, where the conventional problem of achievable bit rate (ABR) is converted to that of the ABR's summation with respect to the two separated signals. Actually, the mutual information is separated accordingly into two. Since the mutual information is non-linear function of signal power in general, the separation brings a chance for achieving higher ABR. The proposed work proceeds along the above thinking and achieves higher bit-error-rate (BER) performance in comparison with BPSK as shown in the simulations. Moreover, one can find theoretically beyond of channel capacity of BPSK input.

Cocktail Intra-Symbol-Codes: Exceeding the Channel Limit of QPSK Input

This paper presents a new method, referred to as the cocktail intra-symbol-code, to reveal the possibility of exceeding the channel limit of QPSK input by transmitting independent signals in parallel manner and separating them the receiver, repetitively. In the proposed modulation scheme, the rhombic constellation is created to work with the modulated signal and the channel code in Euclidean- and Hamming space cooperatively. The theoretical derivations are done under the assumption of using the capacity-achieving codes and the results are shown in terms of the reliable bit rates.

A Method Beyond Channel Capacity in the Low SNR Regime: Theoretical Proof and Numerical Confirmation

A method is proposed, referred to as the cocktail BPSK, to use two independent BPSK streams layered in a parallel transmission through the additive white Gaussian channel. The critical point of the method is to translate the interference between the two layered symbols into a problem of one symbol with two possible amplitudes, whereby we find that the achievable data rate (ADR) of the first layer equals to the channel capacity at zero signal-to-noise-ratio limit. By adding the contribution of the second layer, we find that the total ADR of the two layers can be larger than the channel capacity. The theoretical proof is done based on the mutual information and the numerical results are added for the confirmation.

Cocktail BPSK: Achievable Data Rate beyond Channel Capacity

In this paper, we propose a method layering two independent BPSK symbol streams in parallel transmission through a single additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and investigate its achievable data rate (ADR). The receiver processes the two layered signals individually, where the critical point is to translate the interference between the two layers into the problem of one BPSK symbol having two equiprobable amplitudes. After detecting one symbol stream, we subtract the detected result to demodulate the other symbol stream. Based on the concept of mutual information, we formulate the ADRs and unearth an interesting phenomenon -- the sum ADR of the two BPSK symbol streams is higher than the channel capacity at low signal to noise ratio (SNR). Our theoretical derivations together with illustrative numerical results substantiate this phenomenon. We refer to this approach as cocktail BPSK because the amplitudes of the two layered BPSK streams can be adjusted at the transmitter to achieve high spectral efficiency.

Cocktail BPSK: Energy Reused Scheme for High Achievable Data Rates

The present paper proposes a novel transmission strategy, referred to as cocktail BPSK, whereat two independent BPSKs are superposed with the non-orthogonal basis in a parallel transmission. In contrast to the conventional signal superpositions, the proposed scheme avoids the interference between the two symbols, allows the symbol-energy-reuse of each other and gains the extra energy. Based on the formulation of the mutual informations, the theoretical analysis shows that the cocktail BPSK scheme can achieve high data rate beyond the channel capacity at very low SNR, and the numerical results confirm this approach eventually.

Cocktail BPSK: Cross Power Utilization for High Data Rates

This paper proposes a novel transmission strategy, referred to as cocktail BPSK, where two independent BPSK symbols are layered with various weights to be transmitted and, capitalizing on the cross power utilization, will be demodulated at the receiver without interference from each other. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, its achievable data rate is formulated over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. Based on the theoretical analysis, numerical results are provided for the performance comparisons between the proposed scheme and conventional transmission schemes, which substantiate the validity of the proposed scheme. Specifically, when the signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) is small, the achievable data rate of the proposed scheme outperforms the channel capacity achieved by Gaussian-distributed inputs.

Layered BPSK for High Data Rates

This paper proposes a novel transmission strategy, referred to as layered BPSK, which allows two independent symbol streams to be layered at the transmitter on a non-orthogonal basis and isolated from each other at the receiver without inter-stream interference, aiming to achieve high data rates. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, its data rate is formulated over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. Based on the theoretical analysis, numerical results are provided for the performance comparisons between the proposed scheme and conventional transmission schemes, which substantiate the validity of the proposed scheme.
