Simultaneous measurement of the light and charge response of liquid xenon to low-energy nuclear recoils at multiple electric fields

Dual-phase liquid xenon (LXe) detectors lead the direct search for particle dark matter. Understanding the signal production process of nuclear recoils in LXe is essential for the interpretation of LXe based dark matter searches. Up to now, only two experiments have simultaneously measured both the light and charge yield at different electric fields, neither of which attempted to evaluate the processes leading to light and charge production. In this letter, results from a neutron calibration of liquid xenon with simultaneous light and charge detection are presented for energies from 3-74 keV, at electric fields of 0.19, 0.49, and 1.02 kV/cm. No significant field dependence of the yields is observed.

R$^3$-Net: A Deep Network for Multi-oriented Vehicle Detection in Aerial Images and Videos

Vehicle detection is a significant and challenging task in aerial remote sensing applications. Most existing methods detect vehicles with regular rectangle boxes and fail to offer the orientation of vehicles. However, the orientation information is crucial for several practical applications, such as the trajectory and motion estimation of vehicles. In this paper, we propose a novel deep network, called rotatable region-based residual network (R$^3$-Net), to detect multi-oriented vehicles in aerial images and videos. More specially, R$^3$-Net is utilized to generate rotatable rectangular target boxes in a half coordinate system. First, we use a rotatable region proposal network (R-RPN) to generate rotatable region of interests (R-RoIs) from feature maps produced by a deep convolutional neural network. Here, a proposed batch averaging rotatable anchor (BAR anchor) strategy is applied to initialize the shape of vehicle candidates. Next, we propose a rotatable detection network (R-DN) for the final classification and regression of the R-RoIs. In R-DN, a novel rotatable position sensitive pooling (R-PS pooling) is designed to keep the position and orientation information simultaneously while downsampling the feature maps of R-RoIs. In our model, R-RPN and R-DN can be trained jointly. We test our network on two open vehicle detection image datasets, namely DLR 3K Munich Dataset and VEDAI Dataset, demonstrating the high precision and robustness of our method. In addition, further experiments on aerial videos show the good generalization capability of the proposed method and its potential for vehicle tracking in aerial videos. Connecting Gaze, Scene, and Attention: Generalized Attention Estimation via Joint Modeling of Gaze and Scene Saliency

This paper addresses the challenging problem of estimating the general visual attention of people in images. Our proposed method is designed to work across multiple naturalistic social scenarios and provides a full picture of the subject's attention and gaze. In contrast, earlier works on gaze and attention estimation have focused on constrained problems in more specific contexts. In particular, our model explicitly represents the gaze direction and handles out-of-frame gaze targets. We leverage three different datasets using a multi-task learning approach. We evaluate our method on widely used benchmarks for single-tasks such as gaze angle estimation and attention-within-an-image, as well as on the new challenging task of generalized visual attention prediction. In addition, we have created extended annotations for the MMDB and GazeFollow datasets which are used in our experiments, which we will publicly release.

The formation mechanism of 4179 Toutatis' elongated bi-lobed structure in a close Earth encounter scenario

The optical images of near-Earth asteroid 4179 Toutatis acquired by Chang'e-2 spacecraft show that Toutatis has an elongated contact binary configuration, with the contact point located along the long axis. We speculate that such configuration may have resulted from a low-speed impact between two components. In this work, we performed a series of numerical simulations and compared the results with the optical images, to examine the mechanism and better understand the formation of Toutatis. Herein we propose an scenario that an assumed separated binary precursor could undergo a close encounter with Earth, leading to an impact between the primary and secondary, and the elongation is caused by Earth's tide. The precursor is assumed to be a doubly synchronous binary with a semi-major axis of 4 $R_p$ (radius of primary) and the two components are represented as spherical cohesionless self-gravitating granular aggregates. The mutual orbits are simulated in a Monte Carlo routine to provide appropriate parameters for our \emph{N}-body simulations of impact and tidal distortion. We employ the \emph{pkdgrav} package with a soft-sphere discrete element method (SSDEM) to explore the entire scenarios. The results show that contact binary configurations are natural outcomes under this scenario, whereas the shape of the primary is almost not affected by the impact of the secondary. However, our simulations further provide an elongated contact binary configuration best-matching to the shape of Toutatis at an approaching distance $r_p$ = 1.4 $\sim$ 1.5 $R_e$ (Earth radius), indicative of a likely formation scenario for configurations of Toutatis-like elongated contact binaries.

Relative Effect of Inclinations for Moonlets in the Triple Asteroidal Systems

We present the analysis and computational results for the inclination relative effect of moonlets of triple asteroidal systems. Perturbations on moonlets due to the primarys non-sphericity gravity, the solar gravity, and moonlets relative gravity are discussed. The inclination vector for each moonlet follows a periodic elliptical motion; the motion period depends on the moonlets semi-major axis and the primarys J2 perturbations. Perturbation on moonlets from the Solar gravity and moonlets relative gravity makes the motion of the x component of the inclination vector of moonlet 1 and the y component of the inclination vector of moonlet 2 to be periodic. The mean motion of x component and the y component of the inclination vector of each moonlet forms an ellipse. However, the instantaneous motion of x component and the y component of the inclination vector may be an elliptical disc due to the coupling effect of perturbation forces. Furthermore, the x component of the inclination vector of moonlet 1 and the y component of the inclination vector of moonlet 2 form a quasi-periodic motion. Numerical calculation of dynamical configurations of two triple asteroidal systems (216) Kleopatra and (153591) 2001 SN263 validates the conclusion.

Creep stability of the proposed AIDA mission target 65803 Didymos: I. Discrete cohesionless granular physics model

As the target of the proposed Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA) mission, the near-Earth binary asteroid 65803 Didymos represents a special class of binary asteroids, those whose primaries are at risk of rotational disruption. To gain a better understanding of these binary systems and to support the AIDA mission, this paper investigates the creep stability of the Didymos primary by representing it as a cohesionless self-gravitating granular aggregate subject to rotational acceleration. To achieve this goal, a soft-sphere discrete element model (SSDEM) capable of simulating granular systems in quasi-static states is implemented and a quasi-static spin-up procedure is carried out. We devise three critical spin limits for the simulated aggregates to indicate their critical states triggered by reshaping and surface shedding, internal structural deformation, and shear failure, respectively. The failure condition and mode, and shear strength of an aggregate can all be inferred from the three critical spin limits. The effects of arrangement and size distribution of constituent particles, bulk density, spin-up path, and interparticle friction are numerically explored. The results show that the shear strength of a spinning self-gravitating aggregate depends strongly on both its internal configuration and material parameters, while its failure mode and mechanism are mainly affected by its internal configuration. Additionally, this study provides some constraints on the possible physical properties of the Didymos primary based on observational data and proposes a plausible formation mechanism for this binary system. With a bulk density consistent with observational uncertainty and close to the maximum density allowed for the asteroid, the Didymos primary in certain configurations can remain geo-statically stable without including cohesion.

VideoSet: A Large-Scale Compressed Video Quality Dataset Based on JND Measurement

A new methodology to measure coded image/video quality using the just-noticeable-difference (JND) idea was proposed. Several small JND-based image/video quality datasets were released by the Media Communications Lab at the University of Southern California. In this work, we present an effort to build a large-scale JND-based coded video quality dataset. The dataset consists of 220 5-second sequences in four resolutions (i.e., $1920 \times 1080$, $1280 \times 720$, $960 \times 540$ and $640 \times 360$). For each of the 880 video clips, we encode it using the H.264 codec with $QP=1, \cdots, 51$ and measure the first three JND points with 30+ subjects. The dataset is called the "VideoSet", which is an acronym for "Video Subject Evaluation Test (SET)". This work describes the subjective test procedure, detection and removal of outlying measured data, and the properties of collected JND data. Finally, the significance and implications of the VideoSet to future video coding research and standardization efforts are pointed out. All source/coded video clips as well as measured JND data included in the VideoSet are available to the public in the IEEE DataPort.

Broadband frequency comb generation in aluminum nitride-on-sapphire microresonators

Development of chip-scale optical frequency comb with the coverage from ultra-violet (UV) to mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength is of great significance. To expand the comb spectrum into the challenging UV region, a material platform with high UV transparency is crucial. In this paper, crystalline aluminum nitride (AlN)-onsapphire film is demonstrated for efficient Kerr frequency comb generation. Near-infrared (NIR) comb with nearly octave-spanning coverage and low parametric threshold is achieved in continuous-wave pumped high-quality-factor AlN microring resonators. The competition between stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and hyperparametric oscillation is investigated, along with broadband comb generation via Raman-assisted four-wave mixing (FWM). Thanks to its wide bandgap, excellent crystalline quality as well as intrinsic quadratic and cubic susceptibilities, AlN-on-sapphire platform should be appealing for integrated nonlinear optics from MIR to UV region.

Continuous-wave Raman Lasing in Aluminum Nitride Microresonators

We report the first investigation on continuous-wave Raman lasing in high-quality-factor aluminum nitride (AlN) microring resonators. Although wurtzite AlN is known to exhibit six Raman-active phonons, single-mode Raman lasing with low threshold and high slope efficiency is demonstrated. Selective excitation of A$_1^\mathrm{TO}$ and E$_2^\mathrm{high}$ phonons with Raman shifts of $\sim$612 and 660 cm$^{-1}$ is observed by adjusting the polarization of the pump light. A theoretical analysis of Raman scattering efficiency within ${c}$-plane (0001) of AlN is carried out to help account for the observed lasing behavior. Bidirectional lasing is experimentally confirmed as a result of symmetric Raman gain in micro-scale waveguides. Furthermore, second-order Raman lasing with unparalleled output power of $\sim$11.3 mW is obtained, which offers the capability to yield higher order Raman lasers for mid-infrared applications.

Three-dimensional bulk electronic structure of the Kondo lattice CeIn3 revealed by photoemission

We show the three-dimensional electronic structure of the Kondo lattice CeIn3 using soft x-ray angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy in the paramagnetic state. For the first time, we have directly observed the three-dimensional topology of the Fermi surface of CeIn3 by photoemission. The Fermi surface has a complicated hole pocket centred at the Γ-Z line and an elliptical electron pocket centred at the R point of the Brillouin zone. Polarization and photon-energy dependent photoemission results both indicate the nearly localized nature of the 4f electrons in CeIn3, consistent with the theoretical prediction by means of the combination of density functional theory and single-site dynamical meanfield theory. Those results illustrate that the f electrons of CeIn3, which is the parent material of CeMIn5 compounds, are closer to the localized description than the layered CeMIn5 compounds.

Dynamical Configurations of Celestial Systems Comprised of Multiple Irregular Bodies

This manuscript considers the main features of the nonlinear dynamics of multiple irregular celestial body systems. The gravitational potential, static electric potential, and magnetic potential are considered. Based on the three established potentials, we show that three conservative values exist for this system, including a Jacobi integral. The equilibrium conditions for the system are derived and their stability analyzed. The equilibrium conditions of a celestial system comprised of n irregular bodies are reduced to 12n minus 9 equations. The dynamical results are applied to simulate the motion of multiple-asteroid systems. The simulation is useful for the study of the stability of multiple irregular celestial body systems and for the design of spacecraft orbits to triple asteroid systems discovered in the solar system. The dynamical configurations of the five triple-asteroid systems 45 Eugenia, 87 Sylvia, 93 Minerva, 216 Kleopatra, and 136617 1994CC, and the six-body system 134340 Pluto are calculated and analyzed.

A PMT-like high gain avalanche photodiode based on GaN/AlN periodical stacked structure

Avalanche photodiode (APD) has been intensively investigated as a promising candidate to replace photomultiplier tubes (PMT) for weak light detection. However, in conventional APDs, a large portion of carrier energy drawn from the electric field is thermalized, and the multiplication efficiencies of electron and hole are low and close. In order to achieve high gain, the device should work under breakdown bias, where carrier multiplication proceeds bi-directionally to form a positive feedback multiplication circle. However, breakdown is hard to control, in practice, APDs should work under Geiger mode as a compromise between sustainable detection and high gain. The complexity of system seriously restricts the application. Here, we demonstrate an avalanche photodiode holding high gain without breakdown, which means no quenching circuit is needed for sustainable detection. The device is based on a GaN/AlN periodically-stacked-structure (PSS), wherein electron holds much higher efficiency than hole to draw energy from the electric field, and avalanche happens uni-directionally with high efficiency. and a recorded high gain (10^4) tested under constant bias is obtained in a prototype device, wherein the stable gain can be determined by the periodicity of the GaN/AlN PSS. This work not only brings a new light into avalanche multiplication mechanism, but also paves a technological path with high commercial value to realize highly sensitive avalanche devices working under constant bias like PMT.

Surface Motion Relative to the Irregular Celestial Bodies

We study the motion and equilibria of the grains on the surface of the irregular celestial body (hereafter called irregular bodies). Motions for the grains on the smooth and unsmooth surfaces are discussed, respectively. The linearized equations of motion relative to a surface equilibrium point and its characteristic equations are presented. Considering the stick-slip effect, the damping forces and the spring forces for the grain are calculated, then the linearized equations of motion and the characteristic equations relative to the surface equilibrium points are derived. The number of non-degenerate surface equilibria is an even number. We compute the motion of a grain released above three different regions relative to the irregular asteroid 6489 Golevka, including the flat surface, the concave region, and the convex region. Following the grain release and initial bounce, three kinds of motions exist, the orbital motion, the impact motion and the surface motion. We find that the maximum height of the next hop may be bigger than the maximum height of the current hopping. We also used Monte Carlo simulations to calculate 100 grains hopping motions, the results shows that the stable surface equilibria are on the concave region and flat surface of the asteroid.

Neighborhood Preserved Sparse Representation for Robust Classification on Symmetric Positive Definite Matrices

Due to its promising classification performance, sparse representation based classification(SRC) algorithm has attracted great attention in the past few years. However, the existing SRC type methods apply only to vector data in Euclidean space. As such, there is still no satisfactory approach to conduct classification task for symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrices which is very useful in computer vision. To address this problem, in this paper, a neighborhood preserved kernel SRC method is proposed on SPD manifolds. Specifically, by embedding the SPD matrices into a Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS), the proposed method can perform classification on SPD manifolds through an appropriate Log-Euclidean kernel. Through exploiting the geodesic distance between SPD matrices, our method can effectively characterize the intrinsic local Riemannian geometry within data so as to well unravel the underlying sub-manifold structure. Despite its simplicity, experimental results on several famous database demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better classification results than the state-of-the-art approaches.

A Tale Of Two Amplitudes In High Energy Physics

(abbreviated) I will describe my work on proton Compton scattering in a Unified Proton-Delta theory and on the computation of scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory. We study proton Compton scattering in the first resonance region in an effective field theory approach with adviser Dr. Konstantin G. Savvidy. Proton and $Δ^+$ are naturally unified in the generalized Rarita-Schwinger theory proposed by Savvidy. We introduce six non-minimal electromagnetic interactions--with their coefficients being called "form factors"--and bare polarizabilities in an effective Lagrangian. We express proton and Delta magnetic moments and the electromagnetic polarizabilities in terms of the bare polarizabilities and the form factors. We fit the form factors and bare polarizabilities using experimental data and derive Delta magnetic moment from the best fit values of the parameters. Then I present our joint work with adviser Dr. Gang Chen on the study of boundary behavior of off-shell Yang-Mills amplitudes with a pair of external momenta complexified. In Feynman gauge, we introduce a set of "reduced vertices" which can capture the boundary behavior up to the first two leading orders. We then prove a theorem on permutation sum for a given color ordering, and use it to analyze the boundary behavior of amplitudes with two non-adjacent legs complexified. Then we construct off-shell Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten (BCFW) recursion relations and study relations between off-shell amplitudes. Finally, we study the recursion relations for off-shell Yang-Mills amplitudes at tree and one loop levels as deduced from imposing complexified Ward identity, also in collaboration with Dr. Gang Chen.

Proton Compton scattering in a unified proton-Delta Model

We develop a field-theoretic model for the description of proton Compton scattering in which the proton and its excited state, the Δ+ resonance, are described as part of one multiplet with a single Rarita-Schwinger wavefunction. In order to describe the phenomena observed, it is necessary to incorporate both minimal and non-minimal couplings. The minimal coupling reflects the fact that the Δ+ is a charged particle, and in this model the minimal coupling contributes also to the M1 magnetic transition via the γNΔvertex. The non-minimal couplings consist of five electromagnetic form-factors, which are accessed at fixed and vanishing momentum-transfer squared with real photons in Compton scattering experiments, therefore it is possible to extract a rather well-determined set of optimal parameters which reasonably well fit the data in the resonance region 140-450 MeV. The crucial parameter which determines the γNΔtransition amplitude and therefore the height of the resonance peak is equal to 3.66 +- 0.03, in units of μ_N. We find that this parameter also primarily determines the contributions to magnetic polarizability in this model. In the low-energy region up to 140 MeV, we separately fit the electric and magnetic polarizabilities, while keeping the other parameters fixed and obtain values in line with previous approaches. The basic model is then extended by incorporating the sigma-meson channel with the currently favored parameters, and the pion vertex corrections.

Boundary Behaviors for General Off-shell Amplitudes in Yang-Mills Theory

In this article, we analyze the boundary behaviors of pure Yang-Mills amplitudes under adjacent and non adjacent BCFW shifts in Feynman gauge. We introduce reduced vertexes for Yang-Mills fields, prove that these reduced vertexes are equivalent to the original vertexes as for the study of boundary behaviors, which greatly simplifies our analysis of boundary behaviors. Boundary behaviors for adjacent shifts are readily obtained using reduced vertexes. Then we prove a theorem on permutation sum and use it to prove the improved boundary behaviors for non-adjacent shifts. Based on the boundary behaviors, we find that it is possible to generalize BCFW recursion relation to calculate general tree level off shell amplitudes.

Ward Identity Implies Recursion Relation at Tree and Loop Level

In this article, we use Ward identity to calculate tree and one loop level off shell amplitudes in pure Yang-Mills theory with a pair of external lines complexified. We explicitly prove Ward identity at tree and one loop level using Feynman rules, and then give recursion relations for the off shell amplitudes. We find that the cancellation details in the proof of Ward identity simplifies our derivation of the recursion relations. Then we calculate three and four point one loop off shell amplitudes as examples of our method.
