Characters of irrelevant deformations

We analyse the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of 2d CFTs in a special double-scaling limit, of large central charge and small deformation parameter. In particular, we derive closed formulae for the deformation of the product of left and right moving CFT characters on the torus. It is shown that the $1/c$ contribution takes the same form as that of a CFT, but with rescalings of the modular parameter reflecting a state-dependent change of coordinates. We also extend the analysis for more general deformations that involve $T\bar{T}$, $J\bar{T}$ and $T\bar{J}$ simultaneously. We comment on the implications of our results for holographic proposals of irrelevant deformations.

Geometrizing $T\bar{T}$

The $T\bar{T}$ deformation can be formulated as a dynamical change of coordinates. We establish and generalize this relation to curved spaces by coupling the undeformed theory to 2d gravity. For curved space the dynamical change of coordinates is supplemented by a dynamical Weyl transformation. We also sharpen the holographic correspondence to cutoff AdS$_3$ in multiple ways. First, we show that the action of the annular region between the cutoff surface and the boundary of AdS$_3$ is given precisely by the $T\bar{T}$ operator integrated over either the cutoff surface or the asymptotic boundary. Then we derive dynamical coordinate and Weyl transformations directly from the bulk. Finally, we reproduce the flow equation for the deformed stress tensor from the cutoff geometry.

A pedagogical review on solvable irrelevant deformations of 2d quantum field theory

This is a pedagogical review on $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation of two dimensional quantum field theories. It is based on three lectures which the author gave at ITP-CAS in December 2018. This review consists of four parts. The first part is a general introduction to $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation. Special emphasises are put on the deformed classical Lagrangian and the exact solvability of the spectrum. The second part focuses on the torus partition sum of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$/$\mathrm{J}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformed conformal field theories and modular invariance/covariance. In the third part, different perspectives of $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation are presented, including its relation to random geometry, 2d topological gravity and holography. We summarize more recent developments until January 2021 in the last part.

Geometrizing non-relativistic bilinear deformations

We define three fundamental solvable bilinear deformations for any massive non-relativistic 2d quantum field theory (QFT). They include the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation and the recently introduced hard rod deformation. We show that all three deformations can be interpreted as coupling the non-relativistic QFT to a specific Newton-Cartan geometry, similar to the Jackiw-Teitelboim-like gravity in the relativistic case. Using the gravity formulations, we derive closed-form deformed classical Lagrangians of the Schrödinger model with a generic potential. We also extend the dynamical change of coordinate interpretation to the non-relativistic case for all three deformations. The dynamical coordinates are then used to derive the deformed classical Lagrangians and deformed quantum S-matrices.

Cylinder partition function of the 6-vertex model from algebraic geometry

We compute the exact partition function of the isotropic 6-vertex model on a cylinder geometry with free boundary conditions, for lattices of intermediate size, using Bethe ansatz and algebraic geometry. We perform the computations in both the open and closed channels. We also consider the partial thermodynamic limits, whereby in the open (closed) channel, the open (closed) direction is kept small while the other direction becomes large. We compute the zeros of the partition function in the two partial thermodynamic limits, and compare with the condensation curves.

Structure Constants in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at Finite Coupling as Worldsheet $g$-Function

We develop a novel nonperturbative approach to a class of three-point functions in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM based on Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). More specifically, we study three-point functions of a non-BPS single-trace operator and two determinant operators dual to maximal Giant Graviton D-branes in AdS$_5\times$S$^{5}$. They correspond to disk one-point functions on the worldsheet and admit a simpler and more powerful integrability description than the standard single-trace three-point functions. We first introduce two new methods to efficiently compute such correlators at weak coupling; one based on large $N$ collective fields, which provides an example of open-closed-open duality discussed by Gopakumar, and the other based on combinatorics. The results so obtained exhibit a simple determinant structure and indicate that the correlator can be interpreted as a generalization of $g$-functions in 2d QFT; an overlap between an integrable boundary state and a state corresponding to the single-trace operator. We then determine the boundary state at finite coupling using the symmetry, the crossing equation and the boundary Yang-Baxter equation. With the resulting boundary state, we derive the ground-state $g$-function based on TBA and conjecture its generalization to other states. This is the first fully nonperturbative proposal for the structure constants of operators of finite length. The results are tested extensively at weak and strong couplings. Finally, we point out that determinant operators can provide better probes of sub-AdS locality than single-trace operators and discuss possible applications.

On exact overlaps in integrable spin chains

We develop a new method to compute the exact overlaps between integrable boundary states and on-shell Bethe states for integrable spin chains. Our method is based on the coordinate Bethe Ansatz and does not rely on the "rotation trick" of the corresponding lattice model. It leads to a rigorous proof of the factorized overlap formulas in a number of cases, some of which were inaccessible to earlier methods. As concrete examples, we consider the compact XXX and XXZ Heisenberg spin chains, and the non-compact $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ spin chain.

Expectation value of $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ operator in curved spacetimes

We study the expectation value of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ operator in spacetimes with constant curvature. We define an diffeomorphism invariant biscalar whose coinciding limit gives the expectation value of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ operator. We show that this biscalar is a constant in flat spacetime, which reproduces Zamolodchikov's result in 2004. For spacetimes with non-zero curvature, we show that this is no longer true and the expectation value of the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ operator depends on both the one-point and two-point functions of the stress-energy tensor.

$T\bar T$-deformation and long range spin chains

We point out that two classes of deformations of integrable models, developed completely independently, have deep connections and share the same algebraic origin. One class includes the $T\bar T$-deformation of 1+1 dimensional integrable quantum field theory and related solvable irrelevant deformations proposed recently. The other class is a specific type of long range integrable deformation of quantum spin chains introduced a decade ago, in the context of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. We show that the detailed structures of the two deformations are formally identical and therefore share many features. Both deformations preserve integrability and lead to non-local deformed theories, resulting in a change of the corresponding factorized S-matrices. We also prove a factorisation formula for the expectation value of the operators which trigger the deformation on the lattice; similar results in quantum field theory play an essential role in the solvability of such deformations. We point out that the long range deformation is a natural counterpart of the $T\bar T$-deformation for integrable spin chains, and argue that this observation leads to interesting new avenues to explore.

On the construction of moduli stack of projective Higgs bundles over surfaces

We generalize the construction of M. Lieblich for the compactification of the moduli stack of $\PGL_r$-bundles on algebraic spaces to the moduli stack of Tanaka-Thomas $\PGL_r$-Higgs bundles on algebraic schemes. The method we use is the moduli stack of Higgs version of Azumaya algebras. In the case of smooth surfaces, we obtain a virtual fundamental class on the moduli stack of $\PGL_r$-Higgs bundles. An application to the Vafa-Witten invariants is discussed.

The Vafa-Witten invariants via surface Deligne-Mumford stacks and S-duality

Motivated by the S-duality conjecture of Vafa-Witten, Tanaka-Thomas have developed a theory of Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces using the moduli space of Higgs sheaves. Their definition and calculation prove the S-duality prediction of Vafa-Witten in many cases in the side of gauge group $SU(r)$. In this survey paper for ICCM-2019 we review the S-duality conjecture in physics by Vafa-Witten and the definition of Vafa-Witten invariants for smooth projective surfaces and surface Deligne-Mumford stacks. We make a prediction that the Vafa-Witten invariants for Deligne-Mumford surfaces may give the generating series for the Langlands dual group $^{L}SU(r)=SU(r)/\zz_r$. We survey a check for the projective plane $\pp^2$.

Exact Three-Point Functions of Determinant Operators in Planar N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

We introduce a nonperturbative approach to correlation functions of two determinant operators and one non-protected single-trace operator in planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Based on the gauge/string duality, we propose that they correspond to overlaps on the string worldsheet between an integrable boundary state and a state dual to the single-trace operator. We determine the boundary state using symmetry and integrability of the dual superstring sigma model, and write down expressions for the correlators at finite coupling, which we conjecture to be valid for operators of arbitrary size. The proposal is put to test at weak coupling.

Modular covariance and uniqueness of $J\bar{T}$ deformed CFTs

We study families of two dimensional quantum field theories, labeled by a dimensionful parameter $μ$, that contain a holomorphic conserved $U(1)$ current $J(z)$. We assume that these theories can be consistently defined on a torus, so their partition sum, with a chemical potential for the charge that couples to $J$, is modular covariant. We further require that in these theories, the energy of a state at finite $μ$ is a function only of $μ$, and of the energy, momentum and charge of the corresponding state at $μ=0$, where the theory becomes conformal. We show that under these conditions, the torus partition sum of the theory at $μ=0$ uniquely determines the partition sum (and thus the spectrum) of the perturbed theory, to all orders in $μ$, to be that of a $μJ\bar T$ deformed conformal field theory (CFT). We derive a flow equation for the $J\bar{T}$ deformed partition sum, and use it to study non-perturbative effects. We find non-perturbative ambiguities for any non-zero value of $μ$, and comment on their possible relations to holography.

On motivic Joyce-Song formula for the Behrend function identities

We prove the version of Joyce-Song formula for the Behrend function identities in the motivic setting. The main method we use is the proof of Kontsevich-Soibelman conjecture about the motivic Milnor fibers by Q. T. Le, who uses the method of motivic integration for formal schemes and Cluckers-Loeser's motivic constructible functions. In the Appendix the motivic formula can be used to provide a different proof that there is an algebra homomorphism of Kontsevich-Soibelman from the motivic Hall algebra of the abelian category of coherent sheaves on a Calabi-Yau threefold $Y$ to the motivic quantum torus of $Y$.

Modular invariance and uniqueness of $T\bar{T}$ deformed CFT

Any two dimensional quantum field theory that can be consistently defined on a torus is invariant under modular transformations. In this paper we study families of quantum field theories labeled by a dimensionful parameter $t$, that have the additional property that the energy of a state at finite $t$ is a function only of $t$ and of the energy and momentum of the corresponding state at $t=0$, where the theory becomes conformal. We show that under this requirement, the partition sum of the theory at $t=0$ uniquely determines the partition sum (and thus the spectrum) of the perturbed theory, to all orders in $t$, to be that of a $T\bar T$ deformed CFT. Non-perturbatively, we find that for one sign of $t$ (for which the energies are real) the partition sum is uniquely determined, while for the other sign we find non-perturbative ambiguities. We characterize these ambiguities and comment on their possible relations to holography.

Sheaves on weighted projective planes and modular forms

We give an explicit description of toric sheaves on the weighted projective plane $\mathbb{P}(a,b,c)$ viewed as a toric Deligne-Mumford stack. The integers $(a,b,c)$ are not necessarily chosen coprime or mutually coprime allowing for gerbe and root stack structures. As an application, we describe the fixed point locus of the moduli scheme of stable rank 1 and 2 torsion free sheaves on $\mathbb{P}(a,b,c)$ with fixed $K$-group class. Summing over all $K$-group classes, we obtain explicit formulae for generating functions of the topological Euler characteristics. In the case of stable rank 2 locally free sheaves on $\mathbb{P}(a,b,c)$ with $a,b,c \leq 2$ the generating functions can be expressed in terms of Hurwitz class numbers and give rise to modular forms of weight $3/2$. This generalizes Klyachko's computation on $\mathbb{P}^2$ and is consistent with $S$-duality predictions from physics.

Note on the motivic DT/PT correspondence and the motivic Flop formula

We prove the motivic version of the DT/PT-correspondence in \cite{PT} and the motivic flop formula of the curve counting invariants in the derived category of smooth Calabi-Yau threefold DM stacks. The main method we use is Bridgeland's Hall algebra identities and the motivic integration map of Bridgeland and Joyce from the motivic Hall algebra of the abelian category of coherent sheaves on a Calabi-Yau threefold DM stack $Y$ to the motivic quantum torus, which is a Poisson algebra homomorphism.

Torus partition function of the six-vertex model from algebraic geometry

We develop an efficient method to compute the torus partition function of the six-vertex model exactly for finite lattice size. The method is based on the algebro-geometric approach to the resolution of Bethe ansatz equations initiated in a previous work, and on further ingredients introduced in the present paper. The latter include rational $Q$-system, primary decomposition, algebraic extension and Galois theory. Using this approach, we probe new structures in the solution space of the Bethe ansatz equations which enable us to boost the efficiency of the computation. As an application, we study the zeros of the partition function in a partial thermodynamic limit of $M \times N$ tori with $N \gg M$. We observe that for $N \to \infty$ the zeros accumulate on some curves and give a numerical method to generate the curves of accumulation points.
