Constraints on scalar-tensor theory of gravity by the recent observational results on gravitational waves

The speed of gravitational waves provides us a new tool to test alternative theories of gravity. The constraint on the speed of gravitational waves from GW170817 and GRB170817A is used to test some classes of Horndeski theory. In particular, we consider the coupling of a scalar field to Einstein tensor and the coupling of the Gauss-Bonnet term to a scalar field. The coupling strength of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is constrained to be in the order of $10^{-15}$. In the Horndeski theory we show that in order for this theory to satisfy the stringent constraint on the speed of GWs the mass scale $M$ introduced in the non-minimally derivative coupling is constrained to be in the range $10^{15}\text{GeV}\gg M \gtrsim 2\times 10^{-35}$GeV taking also under consideration the early times upper bound for the mass scale $M$. The large mass ranges require no fine-tuning because the effect of non-minimally derivative coupling is negligible at late times.

Gravitational waves in Einstein-Æther theory and generalized TeVeS theory after GW170817

In this paper, the polarization contents of Einstein-æther theory and the generalized TeVeS theory are studied. The Einstein-æther theory has five polarizations, while the generalized TeVeS theory has six. In particular, transverse and longitudinal breathing polarization are mixed. The~possibility of using pulsar timing arrays to detect the extra polarizations in Einstein-æther theory was also investigated. The analysis showed that different polarizations cannot be easily distinguished by using pulsar timing arrays in this theory. For generalized TeVeS theory, one of the propagating modes travels much faster than the speed of light due to the speed bound set by GW170817. In some parameter subspaces, the strong coupling does not take place, so this theory is excluded.

Primordial black holes and second order gravitational waves from ultra-slow-roll inflation

The next generation of space-borne gravitational wave detectors may detect gravitational waves from extreme mass-ratio inspirals with primordial black holes. To produce primordial black holes which contribute a non-negligible abundance of dark matter and are consistent with the observations, a large enhancement in the primordial curvature power spectrum is needed. For a single field slow-roll inflation, the enhancement requires a very flat potential for the inflaton, and this will increase the number of $e$-folds. To avoid the problem, an ultra-slow-roll inflation at the near inflection point is required. We elaborate the conditions to successfully produce primordial black hole dark matter from single field inflation and propose a toy model with polynomial potential to realize the big enhancement of the curvature power spectrum at small scales while maintaining the consistency with the observations at large scales. The power spectrum for the second order gravitational waves generated by the large density perturbations at small scales is consistent with the current pulsar timing array observations.

The Polarizations of Gravitational Waves

The direct detection of gravitational waves by LIGO/Virgo opened the possibility to test General Relativity and its alternatives in the high speed, strong field regime. Alternative theories of gravity generally predict more polarizations than General Relativity, so it is important to study the polarization contents of theories of gravity to reveal the nature of gravity. In this talk, we analyzed the polarizations contents of Horndeski theory and $f(R)$ gravity. We found out that in addition to the familiar plus and cross polarizations, a \emph{massless} Horndeski theory predicts an extra transverse polarization, and there is a mix of the pure longitudinal and transverse breathing polarizations in the \emph{massive} Horndeski theory and $f(R)$ gravity. It is possible to use pulsar timing arrays to detect the extra polarizations in these theories. We also pointed out that the classification of polarizations using Newman-Penrose variables cannot be applied to the massive modes. It cannot be used to classify polarizations in Einstein-æther theory or generalized TeVeS theory, either.

Polarizations of Gravitational Waves in Horndeski Theory

We analyze the polarization content of gravitational waves in Horndeski theory. Besides the familiar plus and cross polarizations in Einstein's General Relativity, there is one more polarization state which is the mixture of the transverse breathing and longitudinal polarizations. The additional mode is excited by the massive scalar field. In the massless limit, the longitudinal polarization disappears, while the breathing one persists. The upper bound on the graviton mass severely constrains the amplitude of the longitudinal polarization, which makes its detection highly unlikely by the ground-based or space-borne interferometers in the near future. However, pulsar timing arrays might be able to detect the polarization excited by the massive scalar field. Since additional polarization states appear in alternative theories of gravity, the measurement of the polarizations of gravitational waves can be used to probe the nature of gravity. In addition to the plus and cross states, the detection of the breathing polarization means that gravitation is mediated by massless spin 2 and spin 0 fields, and the detection of both the breathing and longitudinal states means that gravitation is propagated by the massless spin 2 and massive spin 0 fields.

Constant-roll tachyon inflation and observational constraints

For the constant-roll tachyon inflation, we derive the analytical expressions for the scalar and tensor power spectra, the scalar and tensor spectral tilts and the tensor to scalar ratio up to the first order by using the method of Bessel function approximation. The derived $n_s-r$ results for the constant-roll inflation are also compared with the observations, we find that only one constant-roll inflation is consistent with the observations and observations constrain the constant-roll inflation to be slow-roll inflation. The tachyon potential is also reconstructed for the constant-roll inflation which is consistent with the observations.

Extended source effect on microlensing light curves by an Ellis wormhole

We can survey an Ellis wormhole which is the simplest Morris-Thorne wormhole in our galaxy with microlensing. The light curve of a point source microlensed by the Ellis wormhole shows approximately $4\%$ demagnification while the total magnification of images lensed by a Schwarzschild lens is always larger than unity. We investigate an extended source effect on the light curves microlensed by the Ellis wormhole. We show that the depth of the gutter of the light curves of an extended source is smaller than the one of a point source since the magnified part of the extended source cancels the demagnified part out. We can, however, distinguish between the light curves of the extended source microlensed by the Ellis wormhole and the ones by the Schwarzschild lens in their shapes even if the size of the source is a few times larger than the size of an Einstein ring on a source plane. If the relative velocity of a star with the radius of $10^6$ km at $8$ kpc in the bulge of our galaxy against an observer-lens system is smaller than $10$ km/s on a source plane, we can detect microlensing of the star lensed by the Ellis wormhole with the throat radius of $1$ km at $4$ kpc.

Gravitational waves in Einstein-æther and generalized TeVeS theory after GW170817

In this work, we discuss the polarization contents of Einstein-æther theory and the generalized tensor-vector-scalar (TeVeS) theory, as both theories have a normalized timelike vector field. We derive the linearized equations of motion around the flat spacetime background using the gauge-invariant variables to easily separate physical degrees of freedom. We find the plane wave solutions are then found, and identify the polarizations by examining the geodesic deviation equations. We find that there are five polarizations in Einstein-æther theory and six polarizations in the generalized TeVeS theory. In particular, the transverse breathing mode is mixed with the pure longitudinal mode. We also discuss the experimental tests of the extra polarizations in Einstein-æther theory using pulsar timing arrays combined with the gravitational-wave speed bound derived from the observations on GW 170817 and GRB 170817A. It turns out that it might be difficult to use pulsar timing arrays to distinguish different polarizations in Einstein-æther theory. The same speed bound also forces one of the propagating modes in the generalized TeVeS theory to travel much faster than the speed of light. Since the strong coupling problem does not exist in some parameter subspaces, the generalized TeVeS theory is excluded in these parameter subspaces.

On the constant-roll inflation

The primordial power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations during slow-roll inflation are usually calculated with the method of Bessel function approximation. For constant-roll or ultra slow-roll inflation, the method of Bessel function approximation may be invalid. We compare the numerical results with the analytical results derived from the Bessel function approximation, and we find that they differ significantly on super-horizon scales if the constant slow-roll parameter $η_H$ is not small. More accurate method is needed for calculating the primordial power spectrum for constant-roll inflation.

Constraints on Horndeski Theory Using the Observations of Nordtvedt Effect, Shapiro Time Delay and Binary Pulsars

Alternative theories of gravity not only modify the polarization contents of the gravitational wave, but also affect the motions of the stars and the energy radiated away via the gravitational radiation. These aspects leave imprints in the observational data, which enables the test of General Relativity and its alternatives. In this work, the Nordtvedt effect and the Shapiro time delay are calculated in order to constrain Horndeski theory using the observations of lunar laser ranging experiments and Cassini time-delay data. The effective stress-energy tensor is also obtained using the method of Isaacson. Gravitational wave radiation of a binary system is calculated, and the change of the period of a binary system is deduced for the elliptical orbit. These results can be used to set constraints on Horndeski theory with the observations of binary systems, such as PSR J1738+0333. Constraints have been obtained for some subclasses of Horndeski theory, in particular, those satisfying the gravitational wave speed limits from GW170817 and GRB 170817A.

Gravitational Wave Polarizations in $f(R)$ Gravity and Scalar-Tensor Theory

The detection of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory opens a new era to use gravitational waves to test alternative theories of gravity. We investigate the polarizations of gravitational waves in $f(R)$ gravity and Horndeski theory, both containing scalar modes. These theories predict that in addition to the familiar $+$ and $\times$ polarizations, there are transverse breathing and longitudinal polarizations excited by the massive scalar mode and the new polarization is a single mixed state. It would be very difficult to detect the longitudinal polarization by interferometers, while pulsar timing array may be the better tool to detect the longitudinal polarization.

Inflationary attractors from nonminimal coupling

We show explicitly how the E model attractor is obtained from the general scalar-tensor theory of gravity with arbitrary conformal factors in the strong coupling limit. By using conformal transformations, any attractor with the observables $n_s$ and $r$ can be obtained. The existence of attractors imposes a challenge to distinguish different models.

The reconstruction of tachyon inflationary potentials

We derive a lower bound on the field excursion for the tachyon inflation, which is determined by the amplitude of the scalar perturbation and the number of $e$-folds before the end of inflation. Using the relation between the observables like $n_s$ and $r$ with the slow-roll parameters, we reconstruct three classes of tachyon potentials. The model parameters are determined from the observations before the potentials are reconstructed, and the observations prefer the concave potential. We also discuss the constraints from the reheating phase preceding the radiation domination for the three classes of models by assuming the equation of state parameter $w_{re}$ during reheating is a constant. Depending on the model parameters and the value of $w_{re}$, the constraints on $N_{re}$ and $T_{re}$ are different. As $n_s$ increases, the allowed reheating epoch becomes longer for $w_{re}=-1/3$, 0 and $1/6$ while the allowed reheating epoch becomes shorter for $w_{re}=2/3$.

Particle collision with an arbitrarily high center-of-mass energy near a Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole

We consider a particle collision with a high center-of-mass energy near a Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole. We obtain the center-of-mass energy of two general colliding geodesic particles in the BTZ black hole spacetime. We show that the center-of-mass energy of two ingoing particles can be arbitrarily large on an event horizon if either of the two particles has a critical angular momentum and the other has a non-critical angular momentum. We also show that the motion of a particle with a subcritical angular momentum is allowed near an extremal rotating BTZ black hole and that a center-of-mass energy for a tail-on collision at a point can be arbitrarily large in a critical angular momentum limit.

de Sitter spacetime with a Becchi-Rouet-Stora quartet

We generalize the topological model recently proposed and investigate the cosmological perturbations of the model. The model has an exact de Sitter background solution associated with a Becchi-Rouet-Stora(BRS) quartet terms which are regarded as a Lagrangian density of the topological field theory. The de Sitter solution can be selected without spontaneously breaking the BRS symmetry, and be interpreted as a gauge fixing of de Sitter spacetime. The BRS symmetry is preserved for the perturbations around the de Sitter background before we solve the constraints of general relativity. We derive action to the second order of the perturbations and confirm that even after solving the constraints, we have the BRS symmetry at least for the second order action. We construct the cosmological perturbation theory involving the BRS sector, and obtain the two point correlation functions for the curvature perturbation and the isocurvature perturbations which compose the BRS sector. Our result gives a new description for de Sitter spacetime and the quantum field theory in de Sitter spacetime.

Polarizations of gravitational waves in $f(R)$ gravity

We point out that there are only three polarizations for gravitational waves in $f(R)$ gravity, and the polarization due to the massive scalar mode is a mix of the pure longitudinal and transverse breathing polarization. The classification of the six polarizations by the Newman-Penrose quantities is based on weak, plane and null gravitational waves, so it is not applicable to the massive mode.

Retrolensing by a charged black hole

Compact objects with a light sphere such as black holes and wormholes can reflect light rays like a mirror. This gravitational lensing phenomenon is called retrolensing and it is an interesting tool to survey dark and compact objects with a light sphere near the solar system. In this paper, we calculate the deflection angle analytically in the strong deflection limit in the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime without Taylor expanding it in the power of the electric charge. Using the obtained deflection angle in the strong deflection limit, we investigate the retrolensing light curves and the separation of double images by the light sphere of Reissner-Nordstrom black holes.

Nonminimal coupling and inflationary attractors

We show explicitly how the T model, E model, and Hilltop inflations are obtained from the general scalar-tensor theory of gravity with arbitrary conformal factors in the strong coupling limit. We argue that $ξ$ attractors can give any observables $n_s$ and $r$ by this method. The existence of attractors imposes a challenge to distinguish different models.
