Inflationary models with non-minimally derivative coupling

We derive the general formulae for the the scalar and tensor spectral tilts to the second order for the inflationary models with non-minimally derivative coupling without taking the high friction limit. The non-minimally kinetic coupling to Einstein tensor brings the energy scale in the inflationary models down to be sub-Planckian. In the high friction limit, the Lyth bound is modified with an extra suppression factor, so that the field excursion of the inflaton is sub-Planckian. The inflationary models with non-minimally derivative coupling are more consistent with observations in the high friction limit. In particular, with the help of the non-minimally derivative coupling, the quartic power law potential is consistent with the observational constraint at 95\% CL.

PPN parameters in gravitational theory with nonminimally derivative coupling

The nonminimal coupling of the kinetic term to Einstein's tensor helps the implementation of inflationary models due to the gravitationally enhanced friction. We calculate the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameters for the scalar--tensor theory of gravity with nonminimally derivative coupling. We find that under experimental constraint from the orbits of millisecond pulsars in our galaxy, the theory deviates from Einstein's general relativity in the order of $10^{-20}$, and the effect of the nonminimal coupling is negligible if we take the scalar field as dynamical dark energy. With the assumed conditions that the background scalar field is spatially homogeneous and evolves only on cosmological timescales and the contribution to stress--energy in the solar system from the background scalar field is subdominant, the scalar field is required to be massless.

Dynamical analysis of modified gravity with nonminimal gravitational coupling to matter

We perform a phase space analysis of a generalized modified gravity theory with nonminimally coupling between geometry and matter. We apply the dynamical system approach to this generalized model and find that in the cosmological context, different choices of Lagrangian density will apparently result in different phases of the Universe. By carefully choosing the variables, we prove that there is an attractor solution to describe the late time accelerating universe when the modified gravity is chosen in a simple power-law form of the curvature scalar. We further examine the temperature evolution based on the thermodynamic understanding of the model. Confronting the model with supernova type Ia data sets, we find that the nonminimally coupled theory of gravity is a viable model to describe the late time Universe acceleration.

The reconstruction of inflationary potentials

The observational data on the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background constraints the scalar spectral tilt $n_s$ and the tensor to scalar ratio $r$ which depend on the first and second derivatives of the inflaton potential. The information can be used to reconstruct the inflaton potential in the polynomial form up to some orders. However, for some classes of potentials, $n_s$ and $r$ behave as $n_s(N)$ and $r(N)$ universally in terms of the number of e-folds $N$. The universal behaviour of $n_s(N)$ can be used to reconstruct a class of inflaton potentials. By parametrizing one of the parameters $n_s(N)$, $ε(N)$ and $ϕ(N)$, and fitting the parameters in the models to the observational data, we obtain the constraints on the parameters and reconstruct the classes of the inflationary models which include the chaotic inflation, T-model, hilltop inflation, s-dual inflation, natural inflation and $R^2$ inflation.

Non-equilibrium condensation process in holographic superconductor with nonlinear electrodynamics

We study the non-equilibrium condensation process in a holographic superconductor with nonlinear corrections to the U(1) gauge field. We start with an asymptotic Anti-de-Sitter(AdS) black hole against a complex scalar perturbation at the initial time, and solve the dynamics of the gravitational systems in the bulk. When the black hole temperature T is smaller than a critical value Tc, the scalar perturbation grows exponentially till saturation, the final state of spacetime approaches to a hairy black hole. In the bulk theory, we find the clue of the influence of nonlinear corrections in the gauge field on the process of the scalar field condensation. We show that the bulk dynamics in the non-equilibrium process is completely consistent with the observations on the boundary order parameter. Furthermore we examine the time evolution of horizons in the bulk non-equilibrium transformation process from the bald AdS black hole to the AdS hairy hole. Both the evolution of apparent and event horizons show that the original AdS black hole configuration requires more time to finish the transformation to become a hairy black hole if there is nonlinear correction to the electromagnetic field. We generalize our non-equilibrium discussions to the holographic entanglement entropy and find that the holographic entanglement entropy can give us further understanding of the influence of the nonlinearity in the gauge field on the scalar condensation. In our analysis, we also compare the effect of different models on the corrections to the gauge field on the formation of holographic superconductor.

Thermodynamics of general scalar-tensor theory with non-minimally derivative coupling

With the usual definitions for the entropy and the temperature associated with the apparent horizon, we discuss the first law of the thermodynamics on the apparent in the general scalar-tensor theory of gravity with the kinetic term of the scalar field non-minimally coupling to Einstein tensor. We show the equivalence between the first law of thermodynamics on the apparent horizon and Friedmann equation for the general models, by using a mass-like function which is equal to the Misner-Sharp mass on the apparent horizon. The results further support the universal relationship between the first law of thermodynamics and Friedmann equation.

Thermodynamics of scalar-tensor theory with non-minimally derivative coupling

With the usual definitions for the entropy and the temperature associated with the apparent horizon, we show that the unified first law on the apparent horizon is equivalent to the Friedmann equation for the scalar--tensor theory with non-minimally derivative coupling. The second law of thermodynamics on the apparent horizon is also satisfied. The results support a deep and fundamental connection between gravitation, thermodynamics, and quantum theory.

Constraints on Lorentz Invariance Violation with gamma-ray bursts via a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach

In quantum theory of gravity, we expect the Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV) and the modification of the dispersion relation between energy and momentum for photons. The effect of the energy-dependent velocity due to the modified dispersion relation for photons was studied in the standard cosmological context by using a sample of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). In this paper we mainly discuss the possible LIV effect by using different cosmological models for the accelerating universe. Due to the degeneracies among model parameters, the GRBs' time delay data are combined with the cosmic microwave background data from the Planck first year release, the baryon acoustic oscillation data at six different redshifts, as well as Union2 type Ia supernovae data, to constrain both the model parameters and the LIV effect. We find no evidence of LIV.

The Phase-space analysis of scalar fields with non-minimally derivative coupling

We perform a dynamical analysis for the exponential scalar field with non-minimally derivative coupling. For the quintessence case, the stable fixed points are the same with and without the non-minimally derivative coupling. For the phantom case, the attractor with dark energy domination exists for the minimal coupling only. For the non-minimally derivative coupling without the standard canonical kinetic term, only the de-Sitter attractor exists, and the dark matter solution is unstable.

Modified Lyth bound and implications of BICEP2 results

To reconcile the BICEP2 measurement on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ with Planck constraint, a large negative running of scalar spectral index $n_s$ is needed. So the inflationary observable such as $n_s$ should be expanded at least to the second-order slow-roll parameters for single-field inflationary models. The large value of $r$ and the Lyth bound indicate that it is impossible to obtain the sub-Planckian excursion for the inflaton. However, we derive an absolutely minimal bound $Δϕ/M_{\rm Pl}>\sqrt{r/2}$ on the inflaton excursion for single-field inflationary models, which can be applied to non-slow-roll inflationary models as well. This bound excludes the possibility of the small-field inflation with $Δϕ<0.1 M_{\rm Pl}$ if the BICEP2 result on $r$ stands and it opens the window of sub-Planckian excursion with $Δϕ<M_{\rm Pl}$ even if $r$ is as large as $0.1$. To get the sub-Planckian excursion with $Δϕ<0.1 M_{\rm Pl}$, our modified bound requires $r<0.02$. Using a fifth-order polynomial potential as an explicit example, we show that it not only agrees with the observational results, but also violates the Lyth bound.

Causality Constraint on Noncritical Einstein-Weyl Gravity

We explore, in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence, the causality constraints on the Noncritical Einstein-Weyl (NEW) gravity model in five dimensions. The scalar and shear channels are considered as small metric perturbations around an AdS black brane background. Our results show that causality analysis on the propagation of these two channels imposes a new bound on the coupling of the Weyl-squared terms in the NEW gravity. This new bound imposes more stringent restrictions than those of the tachyon-free condition, improving predictive power of the theory.

The Simple Single Field Inflation Models and the Running of Spectral Index

The BICEP2 experiment confirms the existence of primordial gravitational wave with the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r=0$ ruled out at $7σ$ level. The consistency of this large value of $r$ with the {\em Planck} data requires a large negative running $n'_s$ of the scalar spectral index. Herein we propose two types of the single field inflation models with simple potentials to study the possibility of the consistency of the models with the BICEP2 and {\em Planck} observations. One type of model suggested herein is realized in the supergravity model building. These models fail to provide the needed $n'_s$ even though both can fit the tensor-to-scalar ratio and spectral index.

The challenge for single field inflation with BICEP2 result

The detection of B-mode power spectrum by the BICEP2 collaboration constrains the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r=0.20^{+0.07}_{-0.05}$ for the lensed-$Λ$CDM model. The consistency of this big value with the {\em Planck} results requires a large running of the spectral index. The large values of the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the running of the spectral index put a challenge to single field inflation. For the chaotic inflation, the larger the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio is, the smaller the value of the running of the spectral index is. For the natural inflation, the absolute value of the running of the spectral index has an upper limit.

The tension on the cosmological parameters from different observational data

Planck measurements of the cosmic microwave background power spectra find a lower value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and a higher value of the fractional matter energy density $Ω_{m0}$ for the concordance $Λ$CDM model, and these results are in tension with other measurements. The {\em Planck} group argued that the tension came either from some sources of unknown systematic errors in some astrophysical measurements or the wrong $Λ$CDM model applied in fitting the data. We studied the reason for the tension on $H_0$ from different measurements by considering two dynamical dark energy models. We found that there is no tension between different data, the constraint on $H_0$ is almost unchanged for different dark energy models and the tension with the local measurements remains when the error bar on $H_0$ is tightened to be around 1. We argue that the tension on $H_0$ is not caused by the fitting model.

The general property of dynamical quintessence field

We discuss the general dynamical behaviors of quintessence field, in particular, the general conditions for tracking and thawing solutions are discussed. We explain what the tracking solutions mean and in what sense the results depend on the initial conditions. Based on the definition of tracking solution, we give a simple explanation on the existence of a general relation between $w_ϕ$ and $Ω_ϕ$ which is independent of the initial conditions for the tracking solution. A more general tracker theorem which requires large initial values of the roll parameter is then proposed. To get thawing solutions, the initial value of the roll parameter needs to be small. The power-law and pseudo-Nambu Goldstone boson potentials are used to discuss the tracking and thawing solutions. A more general $w_ϕ-Ω_ϕ$ relation is derived for the thawing solutions. Based on the asymptotical behavior of the $w_ϕ-Ω_ϕ$ relation, the flow parameter is used to give an upper limit on $w_ϕ'$ for the thawing solutions. If we use the observational constraint $w_{ϕ0}<-0.8$ and $0.2<Ω_{m0}<0.4$, then we require $n\lesssim 1$ for the inverse power-law potential $V(ϕ)=V_0(ϕ/m_{pl})^{-n}$ with tracking solutions and the initial value of the roll parameter $|λ_i|<1.3$ for the potentials with the thawing solutions.

On the effect of the degeneracy between w_0 and w_a

The dynamics of scalar fields as dark energy is well approximated by some general relations between the equation of state parameter $w(z)$ and the fraction energy density $Ω_ϕ$. Based on the approximation, for slowly-rolling scalar fields, we derived the analytical expressions of $w(z)$ which reduce to the popular Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization with explicit degeneracy relation between $w_0$ and $w_a$. The models approximate the dynamics of scalar fields well and help eliminate the degeneracies among $w_a$, $w_0$ and $Ω_{m0}$. With the explicit degeneracy relations, we test their effects on the constraints of cosmological parameters. We find that: (1) The analytical relations between $w_0$ and $w_a$ for the two models are consistent with observational data; (2) The degeneracies have little effect on $Ω_{m0}$; (3) The $1σ$ error of $w_0$ was reduced about 30% with the degeneracy relations.

The transient acceleration from time-dependent interacting dark energy models

The transient acceleration which the current cosmic acceleration is not eternal is possible by introducing the interaction between dark matter and dark energy. If the energy transfer is from dark energy to dark matter, then it is possible to realize the transient acceleration. We study the possibility of transient acceleration by considering two time-dependent phenomenological interaction forms so that the energy transfer increases as the universe evolves. Starting from a simple and extending to a more complicated ansatz, we obtain analytical expressions for the evolutions of the deceleration and the various energy density parameters. We find the ranges of the parameters in the models for a transient acceleration.

The limit on $w'$ for tachyon dark energy

We get the same degeneracy relation between $w_0$ and $w_a$ for the tachyon fields as for quintessence and phantom fields. Our results show that the dynamics of scalar fields with different origins becomes indistinguishable when the equation of state parameter $w$ does not deviate too far away from -1, and the time variation $w'$ satisfies the same bound for the same class of models. For the tachyon fields, a limit on $w'$ exists due to the Hubble damping and we derived the generic bounds on $w'$ for different classes of models. We may distinguish different models in the phase plane of $w-w'$. The current constraints on $w$ and $w'$ are consistent with all classes of models. We need to improve the constraint on $w'$ by 50% to distinguish different models.
