Normalized solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations on graphs

We are concerned with the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an $L^2$ mass constraint on both finite and locally finite graphs and prove that the equation has a normalized solution by employing variational methods. We also pay attention to the behaviours of the normalized solution as the mass constraint tends to $0^+$ or $+\infty$ and give clear descriptions of the limit equations. Finally, we provide some numerical experiments on a finite graph to illustrate our theoretical results.

Mean field type equations on line bundle over a closed Riemann surface

Let $(\mathcal{L},\mathfrak{g})$ be a line bundle over a closed Riemann surface $(Σ,g)$, $Γ(\mathcal{L})$ be the set of all smooth sections, and $\mathcal{D}:Γ(\mathcal{L})\rightarrow T^\astΣ\otimes Γ(\mathcal{L})$ be a connection independent of the bundle metric $\mathfrak{g}$, where $T^\astΣ$ is the cotangent bundle. Suppose that there exists a global unit frame $ζ$ on $Γ({\mathcal{L}})$. Precisely for any $σ\inΓ(\mathcal{L})$, there exists a unique smooth function $u:Σ\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ such that $σ=uζ$ with $|ζ|\equiv 1$ on $Σ$. For any real number $ρ$, we define a functional $\mathcal{J}_ρ:W^{1,2}(Σ,\mathcal{L})\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ by $$\mathcal{J}_ρ(σ)=\frac{1}{2}\int_Σ|\mathcal{D} σ|^2dv_g+\fracρ {|Σ|}\int_Σ\langleσ,ζ\rangle dv_g-ρ\log\int_Σh e^{\langleσ,ζ\rangle}dv_g,$$ where $W^{1,2}(Σ,\mathcal{L})$ is a completion of $Γ(\mathcal{L})$ under the usual Sobolev norm, $|Σ|$ is the area of $(Σ,g)$, $h:Σ\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a strictly positive smooth function and $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle$ is the inner product induced by $\mathfrak{g}$. The Euler-Lagrange equations of $\mathcal{J}_ρ$ are called mean field type equations. Write $\mathcal{H}_0=\{σ\in W^{1,2}(Σ,\mathcal{L}):\mathcal{D}σ=0\}$ and $$\mathcal{H}_1=\left\{σ\in W^{1,2}(Σ,\mathcal{L}):\int_Σ\langleσ,τ\rangle dv_g=0,\,\,\forall τ\in \mathcal{H}_0\right\}.$$ Based on the variational method, we prove that $\mathcal{J}_ρ$ has a constraint critical point on the space $\mathcal{H}_1$ for any $ρ<8π$; Based on blow-up analysis, we calculate the exact value of $\inf_{σ\in\mathcal{H}_1}\mathcal{J}_{8π}(σ)$, provided that it is not achieved by any $σ\in\mathcal{H}_1$;

Boundary value problem for the mean field equation on a compact Riemann surface

Let $(Σ,g)$ be a compact Riemann surface with smooth boundary $\partialΣ$, $Δ_g$ be the Laplace-Beltrami operator, and $h$ be a positive smooth function. Using a min-max scheme introduced by Djadli-Malchiodi (2006) and Djadli (2008), we prove that if $Σ$ is non-contractible, then for any $ρ\in(8kπ,8(k+1)π)$ with $k\in\mathbb{N}^\ast$, the mean field equation $$\left\{\begin{array}{lll} Δ_g u=ρ\frac{he^u}{\int_Σhe^udv_g}&{\rm in}&Σ\\[1.5ex] u=0&{\rm on}&\partialΣ\end{array}\right.$$ has a solution. This generalizes earlier existence results of Ding-Jost-Li-Wang (1999) and Chen-Lin (2003) in the Euclidean domain. Also we consider the corresponding Neumann boundary value problem. If $h$ is a positive smooth function, then for any $ρ\in(4kπ,4(k+1)π)$ with $k\in\mathbb{N}^\ast$, the mean field equation $$\left\{\begin{array}{lll} Δ_g u=ρ\left(\frac{he^u}{\int_Σhe^udv_g}-\frac{1}{|Σ|}\right)&{\rm in}&Σ\\[1.5ex] \partial u/\partial{\mathbf{v}}=0&{\rm on}&\partialΣ\end{array}\right.$$ has a solution, where $\mathbf{v}$ denotes the unit normal outward vector on $\partialΣ$. Note that in this case we do not require the surface to be non-contractible.

Trudinger-Moser inequalities on a closed Riemann surface with a symmetric conical metric

This is a continuation of our previous work [13]. Let $(Σ,g)$ be a closed Riemann surface, where the metric $g$ has conical singularities at finite points. Suppose $\mathbf{G}$ is a group whose elements are isometries acting on $(Σ,g)$. Trudinger-Moser inequalities involving $\mathbf{G}$ are established via the method of blow-up analysis, and the corresponding extremals are also obtained. This extends previous results of Chen [7], Iula-Manicini [21], and the authors [13].

Calculus of variations on locally finite graphs

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a locally finite graph. Firstly, using calculus of variations, including a direct method of variation and the mountain-pass theory, we get sequences of solutions to several local equations on $G$ (the Schrödinger equation, the mean field equation, and the Yamabe equation). Secondly, we derive uniform estimates for those local solution sequences. Finally, we obtain global solutions by extracting convergent sequence of solutions. Our method can be described as a variational method from local to global.

A heat flow for the mean field equation on a finite graph

Inspired by works of Castéras (Pacific J. Math., 2015), Li-Zhu (Calc. Var., 2019) and Sun-Zhu (Calc. Var., 2020), we propose a heat flow for the mean field equation on a connected finite graph $G=(V,E)$. Namely $$ \left\{\begin{array}{lll} \partial_tϕ(u)=Δu-Q+ρ\frac{e^u}{\int_Ve^udμ}\\[1.5ex] u(\cdot,0)=u_0, \end{array}\right. $$ where $Δ$ is the standard graph Laplacian, $ρ$ is a real number, $Q:V\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a function satisfying $\int_VQdμ=ρ$, and $ϕ:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is one of certain smooth functions including $ϕ(s)=e^s$. We prove that for any initial data $u_0$ and any $ρ\in\mathbb{R}$, there exists a unique solution $u:V\times[0,+\infty)\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ of the above heat flow; moreover, $u(x,t)$ converges to some function $u_\infty:V\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ uniformly in $x\in V$ as $t\rightarrow+\infty$, and $u_\infty$ is a solution of the mean field equation $$Δu_\infty-Q+ρ\frac{e^{u_\infty}}{\int_Ve^{u_\infty}dμ}=0.$$ Though $G$ is a finite graph, this result is still unexpected, even in the special case $Q\equiv 0$. Our approach reads as follows: the short time existence of the heat flow follows from the ODE theory; various integral estimates give its long time existence; moreover we establish a Lojasiewicz-Simon type inequality and use it to conclude the convergence of the heat flow.

Existence results for a generalized mean field equation on a closed Riemann surface

Let $Σ$ be a closed Riemann surface, $h$ a positive smooth function on $Σ$, $ρ$ and $α$ real numbers. In this paper, we study a generalized mean field equation \begin{align*} -Δu=ρ\left(\dfrac{he^u}{\int_Σhe^u}-\dfrac{1}{\mathrm{Area}\left(Σ\right)}\right)+α\left(u-\fint_Σu\right), \end{align*} where $Δ$ denotes the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We first derive a uniform bound for solutions when $ρ\in (8kπ, 8(k+1)π)$ for some non-negative integer number $k\in \mathbb{N}$ and $α\notin\mathrm{Spec}\left(-Δ\right)\setminus\set{0}$. Then we obtain existence results for $α<λ_1\left(Σ\right)$ by using the Leray-Schauder degree theory and the minimax method, where $λ_1\left(Σ\right)$ is the first positive eigenvalue for $-Δ$.

Blow-up analysis involving isothermal coordinates on the boundary of compact Riemann surface

Using the method of blow-up analysis, we obtain two sharp Trudinger-Moser inequalities on a compact Riemann surface with smooth boundary, as well as the existence of the corresponding extremals. This generalizes early results of Chang-Yang [7] and the first named author [32], and complements Fontana's inequality of two dimensions [15]. The blow-up analysis in the current paper is far more elaborate than that of [32], and particularly clarifies several ambiguous points there. In precise, we prove the existence of isothermal coordinate systems near the boundary, the existence and uniform estimates of the Green function with the Neumann boundary condition. Also our analysis can be applied to the Kazdan-Warner problem and the Chern-Simons Higgs problem on compact Riemman surfaces with smooth boundaries.

Multiple solutions of Kazdan-Warner equation on graphs in the negative case

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite connected graph, and let $κ: V\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a function such that $\int_Vκdμ<0$. We consider the following Kazdan-Warner equation on $G$:\[Δu+κ-K_λe^{2u}=0,\] where $K_λ=K+λ$ and $K: V\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is a non-constant function satisfying $\max_{x\in V}K(x)=0$ and $λ\in \mathbb{R}$. By a variational method, we prove that there exists a $λ^*>0$ such that when $λ\in(-\infty,λ^*]$ the above equation has solutions, and has no solution when $λ\geq λ^\ast$. In particular, it has only one solution if $λ\leq 0$; at least two distinct solutions if $0<λ<λ^*$; at least one solution if $λ=λ^\ast$. This result complements earlier work of Grigor'yan-Lin-Yang \cite{GLY16}, and is viewed as a discrete analog of that of Ding-Liu \cite{DL95} and Yang-Zhu \cite{YZ19} on manifolds.

Nonexistence of extremals for an inequality of Adimurthi-Druet on a closed Riemann surface

Based on a recent work of Mancini-Thizy [28], we obtain the nonexistence of extremals for an inequality of Adimurthi-Druet [1] on a closed Riemann surface $(Σ,g)$. Precisely, if $λ_1(Σ)$ is the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator with respect to the zero mean value condition, then there exists a positive real number $α^\ast<λ_1(Σ)$ such that for all $α\in (α^\ast,λ_1(Σ))$, the supremum $$\sup_{u\in W^{1,2}(Σ,g),\,\int_Σudv_g=0,\,\|\nabla_gu\|_2\leq 1}\int_Σ\exp(4πu^2(1+α\|u\|_2^2))dv_g$$ can not be attained by any $u\in W^{1,2}(Σ,g)$ with $\int_Σudv_g=0$ and $\|\nabla_gu\|_2\leq 1$, where $W^{1,2}(Σ,g)$ denotes the usual Sobolev space and $\|\cdot\|_2=(\int_Σ|\cdot|^2dv_g)^{1/2}$ denotes the $L^2(Σ,g)$-norm. This complements our earlier result in [39].

Mean field equations on a closed Riemannian surface with the action of an isometric group

Let $(Σ,g)$ be a closed Riemannian surface, $\textbf{G}=\{σ_1,\cdots,σ_N\}$ be an isometric group acting on it. Denote a positive integer $\ell=\inf_{x\inΣ}I(x)$, where $I(x)$ is the number of all distinct points of the set $\{σ_1(x),\cdots,σ_N(x)\}$. A sufficient condition for existence of solutions to the mean field equation $$Δ_g u=8π\ell\left(\frac{he^u}{\int_Σhe^udv_g}-\frac{1}{{\rm Vol}_g(Σ)}\right)$$ is given. This recovers results of Ding-Jost-Li-Wang (Asian J Math 1997) when $\ell=1$ or equivalently $\textbf{G}=\{Id\}$, where $Id$ is the identity map.

Trudinger-Moser inequalities on a closed Riemannian surface with the action of a finite isometric group

Let $(Σ,g)$ be a closed Riemannian surface, $W^{1,2}(Σ,g)$ be the usual Sobolev space, $\textbf{G}$ be a finite isometric group acting on $(Σ,g)$, and $\mathscr{H}_\textbf{G}$ be a function space including all functions $u\in W^{1,2}(Σ,g)$ with $\int_Σudv_g=0$ and $u(σ(x))=u(x)$ for all $σ\in \textbf{G}$ and all $x\inΣ$. Denote the number of distinct points of the set $\{σ(x): σ\in \textbf{G}\}$ by $I(x)$ and $\ell=\inf_{x\in Σ}I(x)$. Let $λ_1^\textbf{G}$ be the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the space $\mathscr{H}_\textbf{G}$. Using blow-up analysis, we prove that if $α<λ_1^\textbf{G}$ and $β\leq 4π\ell$, then there holds $$\sup_{u\in\mathscr{H}_\textbf{G},\,\int_Σ|\nabla_gu|^2dv_g-α\int_Σu^2dv_g\leq 1}\int_Σe^{βu^2}dv_g<\infty;$$ if $α<λ_1^\textbf{G}$ and $β>4π\ell$, or $α\geq λ_1^\textbf{G}$ and $β>0$, then the above supremum is infinity; if $α<λ_1^\textbf{G}$ and $β\leq 4π\ell$, then the above supremum can be attained. Moreover, similar inequalities involving higher order eigenvalues are obtained. Our results partially improve original inequalities of J. Moser \cite{Moser}, L. Fontana \cite{Fontana} and W. Chen \cite{Chen-90}.

A Trudinger-Moser inequality for conical metric in the unit ball

In this note, we prove a Trudinger-Moser inequality for conical metric in the unit ball. Precisely, let $\mathbb{B}$ be the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$ $(N\geq 2)$, $p>1$, $g=|x|^{\frac{2p}{N}β}(dx_1^2+\cdots+dx_N^2)$ be a conical metric on $\mathbb{B}$, and $λ_p(\mathbb{B})=\inf\left\{\int_\mathbb{B}|\nabla u|^Ndx: u\in W_0^{1,N}(\mathbb{B}),\,\int_\mathbb{B}|u|^pdx=1\right\}$. We prove that for any $β\geq 0$ and $α<(1+\frac{p}{N}β)^{N-1+\frac{N}{p}}λ_p(\mathbb{B})$, there exists a constant $C$ such that for all radially symmetric functions $u\in W_0^{1,N}(\mathbb{B})$ with $\int_\mathbb{B}|\nabla u|^Ndx-α(\int_\mathbb{B}|u|^p|x|^{pβ}dx)^{N/p}\leq 1$, there holds $$\int_\mathbb{B}e^{α_N(1+\frac{p}{N}β)|u|^{\frac{N}{N-1}}}|x|^{pβ}dx\leq C,$$ where $|x|^{pβ}dx=dv_g$, $α_N=Nω_{N-1}^{1/(N-1)}$, $ω_{N-1}$ is the area of the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^N$; moreover, extremal functions for such inequalities exist. The case $p=N$, $-1<β<0$ and $α=0$ was considered by Adimurthi-Sandeep \cite{A-S}, while the case $p=N=2$, $β\geq 0$ and $α=0$ was studied by de Figueiredo-do Ó-dos Santos \cite{F-do-dos}.

Extremal functions for Trudinger-Moser inequalities of Adimurthi-Druet type in dimension two

Combining Carleson-Chang's result with blow-up analysis, we prove existence of extremal functions for certain Trudinger-Moser inequalities in dimension two. This kind of inequality was originally proposed by Adimurthi and O. Druet, extended by the author to high dimensional case and Riemannian surface case, generalized by C. Tintarev to wider cases including singular form and by M. de Souza and J. M. do Ó to the whole Euclidean space R^2. In addition to the Euclidean case, we also consider the Riemannian surface case. The results in the current paper complement that of L. Carleson and A. Chang, M. Struwe, M. Flucher, K. Lin, and Adimurthi-Druet, our previous ones, and part of C. Tintarev.

Blow-up analysis concerning singular Trudinger-Moser inequalities in dimension two

In this paper, we derive a sharp version of the singular Trudinger-Moser inequality, which was originally established by Adimurthi and Sandeep (Nonlinear Differ. Equ. Appl. 2007). Moreover, extremal functions for those singular Trudinger-Moser inequalities are also obtained. Our method is the blow-up analysis. Compared with our previous work (J. Differential Equations 2015), the essential difficulty caused by the presence of singularity is how to analyse the asymptotic behaviour of certain maximizing sequence near the blow-up point. We overcome this difficulty by combining two different classification theorems of Chen and Li (Duke Math. J. 1991; Duke Math. J. 1995) to get the desired bubble.

A remark on energy estimates concerning extremals for Trudinger-Moser inequalities on a disc

In this short note, we generalized an energy estimate due to Malchiodi-Martinazzi (J. Eur. Math. Soc. 16 (2014) 893-908) and Mancini-Martinazzi (Calc. Var. (2017) 56:94). As an application, we used it to reprove existence of extremals for Trudinger-Moser inequalities of Adimurthi-Druet type on the unit disc. Such existence problems in general cases had been considered by Yang (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 359 (2007) 5761-5776; J. Differential Equations 258 (2015) 3161-3193) and Lu-Yang (Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. 25 (2009) 963-979) by using another method.

Existence of solutions to a class of Kazdan-Warner equations on compact Riemannian surface

Let $(Σ,g)$ be a compact Riemannian surface without boundary and $λ_1(Σ)$ be the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator $Δ_g$. Let $h$ be a positive smooth function on $Σ$. Define a functional $$J_{α,β}(u)=\frac{1}{2}\int_Σ(|\nabla_gu|^2-αu^2)dv_g-β\log\int_Σhe^udv_g$$ on a function space $\mathcal{H}=\left\{u\in W^{1,2}(Σ): \int_Σudv_g=0\right\}$. If $α<λ_1(Σ)$ and $J_{α,8π}$ has no minimizer on $\mathcal{H}$, then we calculate the infimum of $J_{α,8π}$ on $\mathcal{H}$ by using the method of blow-up analysis. As a consequence, we give a sufficient condition under which a Kazdan-Warner equation has a solution. If $α\geq λ_1(Σ)$, then $\inf_{u\in\mathcal{H}}J_{α,8π}(u)=-\infty$. If $β>8π$, then for any $α\in\mathbb{R}$, there holds $\inf_{u\in\mathcal{H}}J_{α,β}(u)=-\infty$. Moreover, we consider the same problem in the case that $α$ is large, where higher order eigenvalues are involved.

A gradient flow for the prescribed Gaussian curvature problem on a closed Riemann surface with conical singularity

In this note, we prove that the abstract gradient flow introduced by Baird-Fardoun-Regbaoui \cite{BFR}is well-posed on a closed Riemann surface with conical singularity. Long time existence and convergence of the flow are proved under certain assumptions. As an application, the prescribed Gaussian curvature problem is solved when the singular Euler characteristic of the conical surface is non-positive.
