Two-dimensional spin-1 frustrated Heisenberg model with valence-bond ground states

In this paper, we propose a method to understand the nature for the quantum disorder phase of the two-dimensional (2D) high spin frustrated model. The ground state and excitation properties of a fully frustrated 2D spin-1 model are studied based on a model whose groundstate can be found exactly. By analogy to the pseudo-potential approach in the fractional quantum Hall effect, we conclude that the ground states of the fully frustrated spin-1 model are doubly degenerate valance bond solid (VBS) states along the horizontal or vertical direction of the square lattice. We also find that the ground state could be characterized by a nonzero string order, which rarely happened in the 2D case. The method that we used is novel for a 2D spin system and reveals the connection between the fractional quantum hall effect and the frustrated 2D antiferromagnetism system. The VBS states capture the main character of the disordered phase in the 2D spin-1 frustrated system, and can be verified by a numerical method.

Phase diagram of frustrated mixed-spin ladders in the strong-coupling limit

We study the ground-state properties of frustrated Heisenberg ferrimagnetic ladders with antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and two types of alternating sublattice spins. In the limit of strong rung couplings, we show that the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 ladders can be systematically mapped onto a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with additional next-nearest-neighbor exchanges. The system is either in a ferrimagnetic state or in a critical spin-liquid state depending on the competition between the spin exchanges along the legs and the diagonal exchanges.

One-dimensional spin pyrochlore lattice: exact ground state and elementary excitations

We study the antiferromagnetic spin exchange models with $S=1/2$ and S=1 on a one-dimensional tetrahedron chain by both analytical and numerical approaches. The system is shown to be effectively mapped to a decoupled spin chain in the regime of strong rung coupling, and a spin sawtooth lattice in the regime of weak rung coupling with spin $2S$ on the top row and spin $S$ on the lower row. The ground state for the homogeneous tetrahedron chain is found to fall into in the regime of strong rung coupling. As a result, the elementary excitation for the spin-$ 1/2$ system is gapless whereas the excitation for the spin-1 system has a finite spin gap. With the aid of the exact diagonalization method, we determine the phase diagram numerically and find the existence of an additional phase in the intermediate regime. This phase is doubly degenerate and is characterized by an alternating distribution of rung singlet and rung spin $2S$. We also show that the SU(3) exchange model on the same lattice has completely different kind of ground state from that of its SU(2) correspondence and calculate its ground state and elementary excitation analytically.

Possible existence of a band of extended states induced by inter-Landau-band mixing in quantum Hall system

The mixing of states with {\it opposite chirality} in quantum Hall system is shown to have delocalization effect. It is possible that extended states may form bands because of this mixing, as is shown through a numerical calculation on a two-channel network model. Based on this result, a new phase diagram with a narrow {\it metallic} phase separating two adjacent QH phases and/or separating a QH phase from the insulating phase is proposed. The data from recent non-scaling experiments is reanalyzed and shown that they seem to be {\it consistent} with the new phase diagram. However, due to finite-size effects, further study on large system size is still needed to conclude whether there are extended state bands in thermodynamic limit.

Exact spontaneous plaquette ground states for high-spin ladder models

We study the exchange physics in high spin Mott insulating systems with $S=3/2$ which is realizable in ultracold atomic systems. The high symmetry of SO(5) or SU(4) therein renders stronger quantum fluctuations than the usual spin-1/2 systems. A spontaneous plaquette ground state without any site and bond spin orders is rigorously proved in a ladder spin-3/2 model, whose topological excitations exhibit fractionalization behavior. The generalization to the SU(N) plaquette state is also investigated.

Spin Transport Properties in Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Spin Chains: Spin Current induced by Twisted Boundary Magnetic Fields

Spin transport properties of the one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin systems for both $S=1/2$ and S=1 are studied by applying twisted boundary magnetic field. The spin current displays significantly different behavior of the spin transport properties between $S=1/2$ and S=1 cases. For the spin-half case, a London equation for the current and the detection of an alternating electric field are proposed for the linear response regime. The correlation functions reveal the spiral nature of spin configuration for both ground state and the spinon excitations. For the spin-one chain otherwise, a kink is generated in the ground state for the size is larger than the correlation length, leading to an exponential dependence of spin current with respect to the chains length. The midgap state emerges from the degenerate ground state even for small boundary fields.

Quantum size effects on the perpendicular upper critical field in ultra-thin lead films

We report the thickness-dependent (in terms of atomic layers) oscillation behavior of the perpendicular upper critical field $H_{c2\perp}$ in the ultra-thin lead films at the reduced temperature ($t=T/T_c$). Distinct oscillations of the normal-state resistivity as a function of film thickness have also been observed. Compared with the $T_c$ oscillation, the $H_{c2\perp}$ shows a considerable large oscillation amplitude and a $π$ phase shift. The oscillatory mean free path caused by quantum size effect plays a role in $H_{c2\perp}$ oscillation.

Reply to the comment on "Do intradot electron-electron interactions induce dephasing?"

In the comment by Konig, Gefen, and Silva, their main point is to question the approximation we used in solving the Green's function. They believe that this approximative method is inappropriate to describe spin-flip-related dephasing processes caused by intradot interaction, so they believe that our conclusions are ill-founded because of that. We agree that we indeed used an approximation in calculating the Green's function. However, we believe our approximation to be reasonable and the main conclusion, namely, an intradot electron-electron interaction can not induce dephasing, should hold. In particular, we emphasize that we have taken the higher-order terms in solving the Green's function than appeared in their previous publications. We will compare the approximation used their papers with that in our work.

Do intradot electron-electron interactions induce dephasing?

We investigate the degree of coherence of electronic transport through a quantum dot (QD) in the presence of an intradot electron-electron interaction. By using an open multi-terminal Aharonov-Bohm (AB) setup, we find that the intradot interaction does not induce any dephasing effect and the electron transport through the QD is fully coherent. We also observe that the asymmetric amplitude of the AB oscillation in the conductance through the two-terminal AB setup originates from the interplay between the confined structure and the electron-electron interaction. Thus, one can not associate a dephasing process with this asymmetric amplitude, as has been done in previous studies.

Anomalous Kondo effect of indirectly coupled double quantum dots

We report theoretical investigations of indirectly coupled double quantum dots (QD) side connected to an one-dimensional quantum wire. Due to quantum interference controlled by the parameter $k_F L$, with $k_F$ the Fermi wave number of the wire and $L$ the distance between the two QDs, distinctly different Kondo resonances are predicted depending on the range of $k_F L$. A true bound Kondo states is found while an anomalous Kondo resonance gives rise to both reduction and enhancement of conductance.

The effect of inter-Landau-band mixing on extended states in quantum Hall system

The effect of inter-Landau-band mixing on electron localization in an integer quantum Hall system is studied. We find that mixing of localized states with {\it opposite chirality} tends to delocalize the states. This delocalization effect survives the quantum treatment. Extended states form bands because of this mixing, as we show through a numerical calculation on a two-channel network model. Based on this result, we propose a new phase diagram with a narrow {\it metallic} phase that separates any neighboring QH phases from each other and also separates each of them from the insulating phase. We reanalyzed the data from recent non-scaling experiments, and show that they are {\it consistent} with our theory.

Exact solutions and elementary excitations in the XXZ spin chain with unparallel boundary fields

By using a set of gauge transformations, the exact solutions of the XXZ spin chain with unparallel boundary magnetic fields are derived in the framework of the algebraic Bethe ansatz. In the easy-plane case, we show the elementary excitations are some kind of spinons without definite spin because the U(1) symmetry is broken, while in the easy-axis ferromagnetic case a spiral state is realized in the ground state. The correlation functions, the spin torque as well as the spin voltage for the later case are also derived.

Non-exclusion statistics: a generalization of Bose-Einstein's principle

By constructing the super-particle representation of the free boson gas, we propose a new statistics in which the particles are non-exclusive. This statistics can be considered as a generalization of Bose-Einstein's. The possible condensation of this statistical system is studied. It is found that the chemical potential below the condensation temperature is linearly proportional to the temperature rather than a constant. With an proper choice of the exclusion factors $γ_l$, Hadane-Wu's fractional statistics is retrieved in this representation.

Exact Solution of Heisenberg-liquid models with long-range coupling

We present the exact solution of two Heisenberg-liquid models of particles with arbitrary spin $S$ interacting via a hyperbolic long-range potential. In one model the spin-spin coupling has the simple antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange form, while for the other model the interaction is of the ferromagnetic Babujian-Takhatajan type. It is found that the Bethe ansatz equations of these models have a similar structure to that of the Babujian-Takhatajan spin chain. We also conjecture the integrability of a third new spin-lattice model with long-range interaction.

Coqblin-Schrieffer impurity in a singular metal

A Coqblin-Schrieffer impurity of spin $S$ coupled to the boundary of an open SU(N)-invariant $t-J$ chain with $N = 2S+2$ is studied. The model is integrable as a function of one coupling parameter $v$ for arbitrary spin and band filling. The system is coupled to a reservoir of electrons and as a function of the chemical potential the host chain has a critical point corresponding to the van Hove singularity of the empty band of charges. In the neighborhood of this critical point we study the low temperature properties of the impurity as a function of $v$. For constant chemical potential we obtain two critical coupling values $v_1=-1/2$ and $v_2=0$ separating phases in which the impurity spin is completely compensated (Kondo effect), partially screened (undercompensated impurity) or decoupled from the chain (free spin). The partial compensation occurs as a consequence of a thermally {\it activated Kondo effect} in the region $v_1 < v < v_2$. The possible realization of such a {\it finite temperature Kondo effect} in narrow-gap semiconductors is discussed.

Open su(4)-invariant spin ladder with boundary defects

The integrable su(4)-invariant spin-ladder model with boundary defect is studied using the Bethe ansatz method. The exact phase diagram for the ground state is given and the boundary quantum critical behavior is discussed. It consists of a gapped phase in which the rungs of the ladder form singlet states and a gapless Luttinger liquid phase. It is found that in the gapped phase the boundary bound state corresponds to an unscreened local moment, while in the Luttinger liquid phase the local moment is screened at low temperatures in analogy to the Kondo effect.

Absence of overscreened Kondo effect in ferromagnetic host

We study the low temperature behavior of a boundary magnetic impurity S'=1/2 in an open ferromagnetic Takhatajian-Babujian spin-S chain. For antiferromagnetic Kondo coupling, it is show via Bethe ansatz solution that the impurity spin is always locked into the critical behavior the bulk. At low temperature, a local composite of spin S-1/2 forms near the impurity site and its contribution to specific heat is of simple power law T^{1/2}. The absence of overscreened Kondo effect is due to the large correlation length of host spins which is divergent near the quantum critical point.

Bounded Luttinger liquids as a universality class of quantum critical behavior

We show that one-dimensional quantum systems with gapless degrees of freedom and open boundary conditions form a new universality class of quantum critical behavior, which we propose to call ``bounded Luttinger liquids''. They share the following properties with ordinary (periodic) Luttinger liquids: absence of fermionic quasi-particle excitations, charge-spin separation, anomalous power-law correlations with exponents whose scaling relations are parametrized by a single coupling constant per degree of freedom, $K_ν$. The values of $K_ν$ are independent of boundary conditions, but the representation of the critical exponents in terms of these $K_ν$ depends on boundary conditions. We illustrate these scaling relations by exploring general rules for boundary critical exponents derived earlier using the Bethe Ansatz solution of the 1D Hubbard model together with boundary conformal field theory, and the theory of Luttinger liquids in finite-size systems. We apply this theory to the photoemission properties of the organic conductors $(TMTSF)_2X$, and discuss to what extent the assumption of finite strands with open boundaries at the sample surface can reconcile the experimental results with independent information on the Luttinger liquid state in these materials.
