Exact solution of a Kondo lattice model

An integrable Kondo lattice model, which describes a strongly correlated electron host interacting with a spin-1/2 lattice, is proposed. It is found that with the variations of the Kondo coupling J, the hole concentration n_h and the magnetic field H, the system may fall into a variety of phases. The phase boundaries of the ground state are determined exactly. The marginal excitations and the quantum critical behavior at the phase boundaries are discussed.

Modulation structure of a frustrated spin ladder

We study a two-leg spin-1/2 ladder with isotropic exchanges and biquadratic interactions in the basic plaquettes. It is shown that for the extremely frustrated case, the system exhibits a self-organized phase separation. In some parameter regions, the singlet rungs form a Wigner-like lattice in the triplet-rung host. There are three types of elementary excitations in this modulation phase, i.e., the spinons in a triplet domain, the broken singlet rungs and the deformation of the Wigner-like lattice. The flux phase induced by an external magnetic field in the rung-dimerized phase is also discussed.

Fermi liquid features of the one-dimensional Luttinger liquid

We show that the one-dimensional (1D) electron systems can also be described by Landau's phenomenological Fermi-liquid theory. Most of the known results derived from the Luttinger-liquid theory can be retrieved from the 1D Fermi-liquid theory. Exact correspondence between the Landau parameters and Haldane parameters is established. The exponents of the dynamical correlation functions and the impurity problem are also discussed based on the finite size corrections of elementary excitations with the predictions of the conformal field theory, which provides a bridge between the 1D Fermi-liquid and the Luttinger liquid.

Kondo effect in a quantum critical ferromagnet

We study the Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chain coupled with a boundary impurity. Via Bethe ansatz solution, it is found that (i) for J>0, the impurity spin behaves as a diamagnetic center and is completely screened by 2S bulk spins in the ground state, no matter how large the impurity spin is; (ii) The specific heat of the local composite (impurity plus 2S bulk spins which form bound state with it) shows a simple power law $C_{loc}\sim T^{3/2}$. (iii)For J<0, the impurity is locked into the critical behavior of the bulk. Possible phenomena in higher dimensions are discussed.

Enhancement of pair correlation in a one-dimensional hybridization model

We propose an integrable model of one-dimensional (1D) interacting electrons coupled with the local orbitals arrayed periodically in the chain. Since the local orbitals are introduced in a way that double occupation is forbidden, the model keeps the main feature of the periodic Anderson model with an interacting host. For the attractive interaction, it is found that the local orbitals enhance the effective mass of the Cooper-pair-like singlets and also the pair correlation in the ground state. However, the persistent current is depressed in this case. For the repulsive interaction case, the Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian but allows Cooper pair solutions with small momenta, which are induced by the hybridization between the extended state and the local orbitals.

Exact solution of a spin-ladder model

An integrable spin-ladder model with nearest-neighbor exchanges and biquadratic interactions is proposed. With the Bethe ansatz solutions of the model hamiltonian, it is found that there are three possible phases in the ground state, i.e., a rung-dimerized phase with a spin gap, and two massless phases. The possible fixed points of the system and the quantum critical behavior at the critical point $J=J_+^c$ are discussed.

Scalar potential effect in an integrable Kondo model

To study the impurity potential effect to the Kondo problem in a Luttinger liquid, we propose an integrable model of two interacting half-chains coupled with a single magnetic impurity ferromagnetically. It is shown that the scalar potential effectively reconciles the spin dynamics at low temperatures. Generally, there is a competition between the Kondo coupling $J$ and the impurity potential $V$. When the ferromagnetic Kondo coupling dominates over the impurity potential ($V<|SJ|$), the Furusaki-Nagaosa many-body singlet can be perfectly realized. However, when the impurity potential dominates over the Kondo coupling ($V\geq |SJ|$), the fixed point predicted by Furusaki and Nagaosa is unstable and the system must flow to a weak coupling fixed point. It is also found that the effective moment of the impurity measured from the susceptibility is considerably enlarged by the impurity potential. In addition, some quantum phase transitions driven by the impurity potential are found and the anomaly residual entropy is discussed.

Exactly solvable Kondo problem in the open $t-J$ chains

We study the problem of a boundary magnetic impurity coupled with the solvable $t-J$ chains. Our model provides a good start point to understand the Kondo problem in a Luttinger liquid as well as in a strongly correlated host. The Kondo coupling constant $J$ can take arbitrary values, which allows us to study the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kondo problems simultaneously. It is shown that both the Kondo coupling and the scalar potential effectively reconcile the spin dynamics at low temperatures. Generally, the impurity spin is split into two ghost spins via coupling effect. The residual entropy, which can be exactly derived for the present model, is strongly interaction-dependent. This hints the local spin configuration is very complicated and very different from that in the conventional Kondo problem. An unscreening phenomenon in the antiferromagnetic regime is found, which reveals the impurity potential plays an important role for the Kondo problem in a strongly correlated host. The low temperature specific heat is calculated in the framework of local Landau-Luttinger liquid theory.

Ghost spins and novel quantum critical behavior in a spin chain with local bond-deformation

We study the boundary impurity-induced critical behavior in an integrable SU(2)-invariant model consisting of an open Heisenberg chain of arbitrary spin-$S$ (Takhatajian-Babujian model) interacting with an impurity of spin $\vec{S'}$ located at one of the boundaries. For $S=1/2$ or $S'=1/2$, the impurity interaction has a very simple form $J\vec{S}_1\cdot\vec{S'}$ which describes the deformed boundary bond between the impurity $\vec{S'}$ and the first bulk spin $\vec{S}_1$ with an arbitrary strength $J$. With a weak coupling $0 S'$ and $S<S'$ as in the usual Kondo problem. While for strong coupling $J\geq J_0/[(S+S')^2-1/4]$, the impurity spin is split into two ghost spins. Their cooperative effect leads to a variety of new critical behaviors with different values of $|S'-S|$.

Pinning of slidding collective charge state in a 1D attractive fermion system

We investigate an interacting fermion model with boundary potential by using Bethe ansatz method. The ground state properties of the system and the boundary effect are discussed. It is found that attractive boundary potential leads to the boundary bound state. An interesting phenomenon is that the slidding collective charges in a periodic system, which is formed due to the attractive interaction among the fermions, will be pinned around the boundary, as long as the negative boundary potential is strong enough.

Exact solution of the open Heisenberg chain with two impurities

We propose an integrable model of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to two impurity moments. With the open boundary conditions at the impurity sites, the model can be exactly solved for arbitrary impurity spin and arbitrary exchange constants between the bulk and the impurities. The absence of redundant terms in the hamiltonian makes the model very reasonable. The hamiltonian is diagonalized via algebraic Bethe ansatz. It is found that the impurity spins can only be screened (partially for $S>1/2$) for antiferromagnetic coupling between the impurity and the bulk. Otherwise the impurity spins can not be screened. The residual entropy of the ground state and the Kondo temperature are also derived explicitly based on the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and the local Fermi liquid theory.

Integrabilities of the $t-J$ Model with Impurities

The hamiltonian with magnetic impurities coupled to the strongly correlated electron system is constructed from $t-J$ model. And it is diagonalized exactly by using the Bethe ansatz method. Our boundary matrices depend on the spins of the electrons. The Kondo problem in this system is discussed in details. The integral equations are derived with complex rapidities which describe the bound states in the system. The finite-size corrections for the ground-state energies are obtained.

Exact Results for a Kondo Problem in One Dimensional t-J Model

We propose an integrable Kondo problem in a one-dimensional (1D) $t-J$ model. With the open boundary condition of the wave functions at the impurity sites, the model can be exactly solved via Bethe ansatz for a class of $J_{R,L}$ (Kondo coupling constants) and $V_{L,R}$ (impurity potentials) parametrized by a single parameter $c$. The integrable value of $J_{L,R}$ runs from negative infinity to positive infinity, which allows us to study both the ferromagnetic Kondo problem and antiferromagnetic Kondo problem in a strongly correlated electron system. Generally, there is a residual entropy for the ground state, which indicates a typical non-Fermi liquid behavior.

An Exactly Solvable Kondo Problem for Interacting One-Dimensional Fermions

The single impurity Kondo problem in the one-dimensional $δ$-potential Fermi gas is exactly solved for two sets of special coupling constants via Bethe ansatz. It is found that ferromagnetic Kondo screening does occur in one case which confirms the Furusaki-Nagaosa conjecture while in the other case it does not, which we explain in a simple physical picture. The surface energy, the low temperature specific heat and the Pauli susceptibility induced by the impurity and thereby the Kondo temperature are derived explicitly.
