Nonlinear Control of Tunneling Through an Epsilon-Near-Zero Channel

The epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) tunneling phenomenon allows full transmission of waves through a narrow channel even in the presence of a strong geometric mismatch. Here we experimentally demonstrate nonlinear control of the ENZ tunneling by an external field, as well as self-modulation of the transmission resonance due to the incident wave. Using a waveguide section near cut-off frequency as the ENZ system, we introduce a diode with tunable and nonlinear capacitance to demonstrate both of these effects. Our results confirm earlier theoretical ideas on using an ENZ channel for dielectric sensing, and their potential applications for tunable slow-light structures.

Truncated-Bloch-wave solitons in optical lattices

We study self-trapped localized nonlinear states in the form of truncated Bloch waves in one-dimensional optical lattices, which appear in the gaps of the linear bandgap spectrum. We demonstrate the existence of families of such localized states which differ by the number of intensity peaks. These families do not bifurcate from the band edge, and their power curves exhibit double branches. Linear stability analysis demonstrates that in deep lattice potentials the states corresponding to the lower branches are stable, whereas those corresponding to the upper branches are unstable, independently of the number of peaks.

Excited spin states and phase separation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze the structure of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of a homogenous magnetic field. We classify the homogenous stationary states and study their existence, bifurcations, and energy spectra. We reveal that the phase separation can occur in the ground state of polar condensates, while the spin components of the ferromagnetic condensates are always miscible and no phase separation occurs. Our theoretical model, confirmed by numerical simulations, explains that this phenomenon takes place when the energy of the lowest homogenous state is a concave function of the magnetization. In particular, we predict that phase separation can be observed in a $^{23}$Na condensate confined in a highly elongated harmonic trap. Finally, we discuss the phenomena of dynamical instability and spin domain formation.

Surface solitons in two-dimensional quadratic photonic lattices

We study two-color surface solitons in two-dimensional photonic lattices with quadratic nonlinear response. We demonstrate that such parametrically coupled optical localized modes can exist in the corners or at the edges of a square photonic lattice, and we analyze the impact of the phase mismatch on their properties, stability, and the threshold power for their generation.

Surface magnetoinductive breathers in two-dimensional magnetic metamaterials

We study discrete surface breathers in two-dimensional lattices of inductively-coupled split-ring resonators with capacitive nonlinearity. We consider both Hamiltonian and dissipative systems and analyze the properties of the modes localized in space and periodic in time (discrete breathers) located in the corners and at the edges of the lattice. We find that surface breathers in the Hamiltonian systems have lower energy than their bulk counterparts, and they are generally more stable.

Optical guiding of absorbing nanoclusters in air

We introduce a novel approach for all-optical trapping and manipulation of absorbing aerosol particles based on a photophoretic force. We demonstrate experimentally, in open air, the robust three-dimensional guiding of agglomerates of carbon nanoparticles with the size spanned for two orders of magnitude, from 100 nanometers to 10 microns, over the distances of a few millimeters, as well as their acceleration up to velocities of 1 cm/s and simultaneous trapping of a large number of particles.

Asymmetric parametric amplification in nonlinear left-handed transmission lines

We study parametric amplification in nonlinear left-handed transmission lines, which serve as model systems for nonlinear negative index metamaterials. We experimentally demonstrate amplification of a weak pump signal in three regimes: with the signal in the left-handed band, with the signal in the stop band, and with the signal at a defect frequency. In particular, we demonstrate the amplification of the incident wave by up to 15dB in the left-handed regime.

Dispersion extraction with near-field measurements in periodic waveguides

We formulate and demonstrate experimentally the high-resolution spectral method based on Bloch-wave symmetry properties for extracting mode dispersion in periodic waveguides from measurements of near-field profiles. We characterize both the propagating and evanescent modes, and also determine the amplitudes of forward and backward waves in different waveguide configurations, with the estimated accuracy of several percent or less. Whereas the commonly employed spatial Fourier-transform (SFT) analysis provides the wavenumber resolution which is limited by the inverse length of the waveguide, we achieve precise dispersion extraction even for compact photonic structures.

Vector vortex solitons in nematic liquid crystals

We analyze the existence and stability of two-component vector solitons in nematic liquid crystals for which one of the components carries angular momentum and describes a vortex beam. We demonstrate that the nonlocal, nonlinear response can dramatically enhance the field coupling leading to the stabilization of the vortex beam when the amplitude of the second beam exceeds some threshold value. We develop a variational approach to describe this effect analytically.

Goos-Hänchen and Imbert-Fedorov shifts of polarized vortex beams

We study, analytically and numerically, reflection and transmission of an arbitrarily polarized vortex beam on an interface separating two dielectric media and derive general expressions for linear and angular Goos-Hanchen and Imbert-Fedorov shifts. We predict a novel vortex-induced Goos-Hanchen shift, and also reveal direct connection between the spin-induced angular shifts and the vortex-induced linear shifts.

Stable higher-charge discrete vortices in hexagonal optical lattices

We show that double-charge discrete optical vortices may be completely stable in hexagonal photonic lattices where single-charge vortices always exhibit dynamical instabilities. Even when unstable the double-charge vortices typically have a much weaker instability than the single-charge vortices, and thus their breakup occurs at longer propagation distances.

Tunable transmission and harmonic generation in nonlinear metamaterials

We study the properties of a tunable nonlinear metamaterial operating at microwave frequencies. We fabricate the nonlinear metamaterial composed of double split-ring resonators and wires where a varactor diode is introduced into each resonator so that the magnetic resonance can be tuned dynamically by varying the input power. We show that at higher powers the transmission of the metamaterial becomes power dependent, and we demonstrate experimentally power-dependent transmission properties and selective generation of higher harmonics.

Cut-wire-pair structures as two-dimensional magnetic metamaterials

We study numerically and experimentally magnetic metamaterials based on cut-wire pairs instead of split-ring resonators. The cut-wire pair planar structure is extended in order to create a truly two-dimensional metamaterial suitable for scaling to optical frequencies. We fabricate the cut-wire metamaterial operating at microwave frequencies with lattice spacing around 10% of the free-space wavelength, and find good agreement with direct numerical simulations. Unlike the structures based on split-ring resonators, the nearest-neighbor coupling in cut-wire pairs can result in a magnetic stop-band with propagation in the transverse direction.

Spin-Domain Formation in Antiferromagnetic Condensates

Antiferromagnetic condensates are generally believed not to display modulational instability and subsequent spin-domain formation. Here we demonstrate that in he presence of a homogeneous magnetic field antiferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates can undergo spatial modulational instability followed by the subsequent generation of spin domains. Employing numerical simulations for realistic conditions, we show how this novel effect can be observed in sodium condensates confined in an optical trap. Finally, we link this instability and spin-domain formation with stationary modes of the condensate.

Interface solitons in two-dimensional photonic lattices

We analyze localization of light at the interface separating square and hexagonal photonic lattices, as recently realized experimentally in two-dimensional laser-written waveguide arrays in silica glass with self-focusing nonlinearity [A. Szameit {\em et al.}, Opt. Lett. {\bf 33}, 663 (2008)]. We reveal the conditions for the existence of {\em linear} and {\em nonlinear} surface states substantially influenced by the lattice topology, and study the effect of the different symmetries and couplings on the stability of two-dimensional interface solitons.

Two-color surface lattice solitons

We study the properties of surface solitons generated at the edge of a semi-infinite photonic lattice in nonlinear quadratic media, namely two-color surface lattice solitons. We analyze the impact of phase mismatch on existence and stability of surface modes, and find novel classes of two-color twisted surface solitons which are stable in a large domain of their existence.

Extraordinary transmission of nanohole lattices in gold films

We study experimentally the transmission of light through a square lattice of nanoholes perforated in a optically-thick gold film. We observe that the periodicity of the structure enhances the light transmission for specific wavelengths, and we analyze this effect theoretically by employing finite-difference time-domain numerical simulations. Furthermore, we investigate the possibilities for manipulation of the spectral transmission in quasi-periodic and chirped lattices consisting of square nanoholes with varying hole size or lattice periodicity.

Radiationless energy exchange in three-soliton collisions

We revisit the problem of the three-soliton collisions in the weakly perturbed sine-Gordon equation and develop an effective three-particle model allowing to explain many interesting features observed in numerical simulations of the soliton collisions. In particular, we explain why collisions between two kinks and one antikink are observed to be practically elastic or strongly inelastic depending on relative initial positions of the kinks. The fact that the three-soliton collisions become more elastic with an increase in the collision velocity also becomes clear in the framework of the three-particle model. The three-particle model does not involve internal modes of the kinks, but it gives a qualitative description to all the effects observed in the three-soliton collisions, including the fractal scattering and the existence of short-lived three-soliton bound states. The radiationless energy exchange between the colliding solitons in weakly perturbed integrable systems takes place in the vicinity of the separatrix multi-soliton solutions of the corresponding integrable equations, where even small perturbations can result in a considerable change in the collision outcome. This conclusion is illustrated through the use of the reduced three-particle model.
