Multistability in nonlinear left-handed transmission lines

Employing a nonlinear left-handed transmission line as a model system, we demonstrate experimentally the multi-stability phenomena predicted theoretically for microstructured left-handed metamaterials with a nonlinear response. We show that the bistability is associated with the period doubling which at higher power may result in chaotic dynamics of the transmission line.

Ideal and nonideal electromagnetic cloaks

We employ the analytical results for the spatial transformation of the electromagnetic fields to obtain and analyze explicit expressions for the structure of the electromagnetic fields in invisibility cloaks, beam splitters, and field concentrators. We study the efficiency of nonideal electromagnetic cloaks and discuss the effect of scattering losses on the cloak invisibility.

Low-threshold bistability of slow light in photonic-crystal waveguides

We analyze the resonant transmission of light through a photonic-crystal waveguide side coupled to a Kerr nonlinear cavity, and demonstrate how to design the structure geometry for achieving bistability and all-optical switching at ultra-low powers in the slow-light regime. We show that the resonance quality factor in such structures scales inversely proportional to the group velocity of light at the resonant frequency and thus grows indefinitely in the slow-light regime. Accordingly, the power threshold required for all-optical switching in such structures scales as a square of the group velocity, rapidly vanishing in the slow-light regime.

Coupled-resonator-induced reflection in photonic-crystal waveguide structures

We study the resonant transmission of light in a coupled-resonator optical waveguide interacting with two nearly identical side cavities. We reveal and describe a novel effect of the coupled-resonator-induced reflection (CRIR) characterized by a very high and easily tunable quality factor of the reflection line, for the case of the inter-site coupling between the cavities and the waveguide. This effect differs sharply from the coupled-resonator-induced transparency (CRIT) -- an all-optical analogue of the electromagnetically-induced transparency -- which has recently been studied theoretically and observed experimentally for the structures based on micro-ring resonators and photonic crystal cavities. Both CRIR and CRIT effects have the same physical origin which can be attributed to the Fano-Feshbach resonances in the systems exhibiting more than one resonance. We discuss the applicability of the novel CRIR effect to the control of the slow-light propagation and low-threshold all-optical switching.

Diffraction-managed solitons and nonlinear beam diffusion in modulated arrays of optical waveguides

We study propagation of light in nonlinear diffraction-managed photonic lattices created with arrays of periodically-curved coupled optical waveguides which were fabricated using femtosecond laser writing in silica glass, and titanium indiffusion in LiNbO3 crystals. We identify different regimes of the nonlinear propagation of light beams depending on the input power, and present the first experimental observation of diffraction-managed solitons, which are formed as a result of the interplay between the engineered beam diffraction and nonlinear self-focusing or defocusing. We observe that in self-collimating structures where linear diffraction is suppressed, a novel regime of nonlinear beam diffusion takes place at the intermediate powers before the lattice soliton is formed at higher powers.

Dynamics of matter-wave solitons in a ratchet potential

We study the dynamics of bright solitons formed in a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive atomic interactions perturbed by a weak bichromatic optical lattice potential. The lattice depth is a biperiodic function of time with a zero mean, which realises a flashing ratchet for matter-wave solitons. The average velocity of a soliton and the directed soliton current induced by the ratchet depend on the number of atoms in the soliton. We employ this feature to study collisions between ratchet-driven solitons and find that soliton transport can be induced through their interactions. In the regime when matter-wave solitons are narrow compared to the lattice period the ratchet dynamics is well described by the effective Hamiltonian theory.

Many-body quantum coherence and interaction blockade in Josephson-linked Bose-Einstein condensates

We study many-body quantum coherence and interaction blockade in two Josephson-linked Bose-Einstein condensates. We introduce universal operators for characterizing many-body coherence without limitations on the system symmetry and total particle number $N$. We reproduce the results for both coherence fluctuations and number squeezing in {\em symmetric} systems of large $N$, and reveal several peculiar phenomena that may occur in {\em asymmetric} systems and systems of small $N$. For asymmetric systems, we show that, due to an interplay between asymmetry and inter-particle interaction, the coherence fluctuations are suppressed dramatically when $|E_{C}/E_{J}|\ll 1$, and both {\it resonant tunneling} and {\it interaction blockade} take place for large values of $|E_{C}/E_{J}|$, where $E_C$ and $E_J$ are the interaction and tunneling energies, respectively. We emphasize that the resonant tunneling and interaction blockade may allow creating single-atom devices with promising technology applications. We demonstrate that for the systems at finite temperatures the formation of self-trapped states causes an anomalous behavior.

Observation of Enhanced Beaming from Photonic Crystal Waveguides

We report on the experimental observation of the beaming effect in photonic crystals enhanced via surface modes. We experimentally map the spatial field distribution of energy emitted from a subwavelength photonic crystal waveguide into free-space, rendering with crisp clarity the diffractionless beaming of energy. Our experimental data agree well with our numerical studies of the beaming enhancement in photonic crystals with modulated surfaces. Without loss of generality, we study the beaming effect in a photonic crystal scaled to microwave frequencies and demonstrate the technological capacity to deliver long-range, wavelength-scaled beaming of energy.

Nonlinear localized modes at phase-slip defects in waveguide arrays

We study light localization at a phase-slip defect created by two semi-infinite mismatched identical arrays of coupled optical waveguides. We demonstrate that the nonlinear defect modes possess the specific properties of both nonlinear surface modes and discrete solitons. We analyze stability of the localized modes and their generation in both linear and nonlinear regimes.

All-optical switching and multistability in photonic structures with liquid crystal defects

We demonstrate that one-dimensional photonic crystals with pure nematic liquid-crystal defects can operate as all-optical switching devices based on optical orientational nonlinearities of liquid crystals. We show that such a periodic structure is responsible for a modulated threshold of the optical Fréedericksz transition in the spectral domain, and this leads to all-optical switching and light-induced multistability. This effect has no quasi-statics electric field analogue, and it results from nonlinear coupling between light and a defect mode.

Surface solitons in two-dimensional chirped photonic lattices

We study surface modes in semi-infinite chirped two-dimensional photonic lattices in the frame- work of an effective discrete nonlinear model. We demonstrate that the lattice chirp can change dramatically the conditions for the mode localization near the surface, and we find numerically the families of surface modes, in linear lattices, and discrete surface solitons, in nonlinear lattices. We demonstrate that, in a sharp contrast to one-dimensional discrete surface solitons, in two-dimensional lattices the mode threshold power is lowered by the action of both the surface and lattice chirp. By manipulating with the lattice chirp, we can control the mode position and its localization.

Defect-free surface states in modulated photonic lattices

We predict that interfaces of modulated photonic lattices can support a novel type of generic surface states. Such linear surface states appear in truncated but otherwise perfect (defect-free) lattices as a direct consequence of the periodic modulation of the lattice potential, without any embedded or nonlinearity-induced defects. This is in a sharp contrast to all previous studies, where surface states in linear or nonlinear lattices, such as Tamm or Shockley type surface states, are always associated with the presence of a certain type of structural or induced surface defect.

Optical Bloch oscillations in periodic structures with metamaterials

We predict that optical Bloch oscillations can be observed in layered structures with left-handed metamaterials and zero average refractive index where the layer thickness varies linearly across the structure. We demonstrate a new type of the Bloch oscillations associated with coupled surface waves excited at the interfaces between the layers with left-handed material and conventional dielectric.

Nonlinearity-assisted quantum tunneling in a matter-wave interferometer

We investigate the {\em nonlinearity-assisted quantum tunneling} and formation of nonlinear collective excitations in a matter-wave interferometer, which is realised by the adiabatic transformation of a double-well potential into a single-well harmonic trap. In contrast to the linear quantum tunneling induced by the crossing (or avoided crossing) of neighbouring energy levels, the quantum tunneling between different nonlinear eigenstates is assisted by the nonlinear mean-field interaction. When the barrier between the wells decreases, the mean-field interaction aids quantum tunneling between the ground and excited nonlinear eigenstates. The resulting {\em non-adiabatic evolution} depends on the input states. The tunneling process leads to the generation of dark solitons, and the number of the generated dark solitons is highly sensitive to the matter-wave nonlinearity. The results of the numerical simulations of the matter-wave dynamics are successfully interpreted with a coupled-mode theory for multiple nonlinear eigenstates.

Full-time dynamics of modulational instability in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We describe the full-time dynamics of modulational instability in F=1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates for the case of the integrable three-component model associated with the matrix nonlinear Schroedinger equation. We obtain an exact homoclinic solution of this model by employing the dressing method which we generalize to the case of the higher-rank projectors. This homoclinic solution describes the development of modulational instability beyond the linear regime, and we show that the modulational instability demonstrates the reversal property when the growth of the modulation amplitude is changed by its exponential decay.

Generation of the second-harmonic Bessel beams via nonlinear Bragg diffraction

We generate conical second-harmonic radiation by transverse excitation of a two-dimensional annular periodically-poled nonlinear photonic structure with a fundamental Gaussian beam. We show that these conical waves are the far-field images of the Bessel beams generated in a crystal by parametric frequency conversion assisted by nonlinear Bragg diffraction.

Soliton transverse instabilities in nonlocal nonlinear media

We analyze the transverse instabilities of spatial bright solitons in nonlocal nonlinear media, both analytically and numerically. We demonstrate that the nonlocal nonlinear response leads to a dramatic suppression of the transverse instability of the soliton stripes, and we derive the asymptotic expressions for the instability growth rate in both short- and long-wave approximations.

Fano resonances at light scattering by an obstacle

It is shown that elastic resonance scattering of light by a finite-size obstacle with weak dissipation is analogous to quantum scattering by a potential with quasi-discrete levels and exhibits Fano resonances. Localized plasmons (polaritons), exited in the obstacle by the incident light, are equivalent to the quasi-discrete levels, while the radiative decay of these excitations plays exactly the same role as tunnelling from the quasi-discrete levels for the quantum problem. Mie scattering of light by a spherical particle and an exactly solvable discrete model with nonlocal coupling simulating wave scattering in systems with reduced spatial dimensionality are discussed as examples.
