Pressure Study of BiS2-Based Superconductors Bi4O4S3 and La(O,F)BiS2

We report the electrical resistivity measurements under pressure for the recently discovered BiS2-based layered superconductors Bi4O4S3 and La(O,F)BiS2. In Bi4O4S3, the transition temperature Tc decreases monotonically without a distinct change in the metallic behavior in the normal state. In La(O,F)BiS2, on the other hand, Tc initially increases with increasing pressure and then decreases above ? 1 GPa. The semiconducting behavior in the normal state is suppressed markedly and monotonically, whereas the evolution of Tc is nonlinear. The strong suppression of the semiconducting behavior without doping in La(O,F)BiS2 suggests that the Fermi surface is located in the vicinity of some instability. In the present study, we elucidate that the superconductivity in the BiS2 layer favors the Fermi surface at the boundary between the semiconducting and metallic behaviors.

Critical property of spin-glass transition in a bond-disordered classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a biquadratic interaction

Motivated by puzzling spin-glass behaviors observed in many pyrochlore-based magnets, effects of magnetoelastic coupling to local lattice distortions were recently studied by the authors for a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 047204 (2011)]. Here, we extend the analyses with focusing on the critical property of the spin-glass transition which occurs concomitantly with a nematic transition. Finite-size scaling analyses are performed up to a larger system size with 8192 spins to estimate the transition temperature and critical exponents. The exponents are compared with those in the absence of the magnetoelastic coupling and with those for the canonical spin-glass systems. We also discuss the temperature dependence of the specific heat in comparison with that in canonical spin-glass systems as well as an experimental result.

Loop algorithm for classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models with biquadratic interactions

Monte Carlo simulation using the standard single-spin flip algorithm often fails to sample over the entire configuration space at low temperatures for frustrated spin systems. A typical example is a class of spin-ice type Ising models. In this case, the difficulty can be avoided by introducing a global-flip algorithm, the loop algorithm. Similar difficulty is encountered in O(3) Heisenberg models in the presence of biquadratic interaction. The loop algorithm, however, is not straightforwardly applied to this case, since the system does not have a priori spin-anisotropy axis for constructing the loops. We propose an extension of the loop algorithm to the bilinear-biquadratic models. The efficiency is tested for three different ways to flip spins on a loop in Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the most efficient method depends on the strength of the biquadratic interaction.

Spin-glass transition in bond-disordered Heisenberg antiferromagnets coupled with local lattice distortions on a pyrochlore lattice

Motivated by puzzling characteristics of spin-glass transitions widely observed in pyrochlore-based frustrated materials, we investigate effects of coupling to local lattice distortions in a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the spin-glass transition temperature $\TSG$ is largely enhanced by the spin-lattice coupling, and furthermore, becomes almost independent of $Δ$ in a wide range of the disorder strength $Δ$. The critical property of the spin glass transition is indistinguishable from that of the canonical Heisenberg spin glass in the entire range of $Δ$. These peculiar behaviors are ascribed to a modification of the degenerate manifold from continuous to semidiscrete one by the spin-lattice coupling.

Monte Carlo Study of Relaxor Systems: A Minimum Model for Pb(In$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$)O$_3$}

We examine a simple model for Pb(In$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$)O$_3$ (PIN), which includes both long-range dipole-dipole interaction and random local anisotropy. A improved algorithm optimized for long-range interaction has been applied for efficient large-scale Monte Carlo simulation. We demonstrate that the phase diagram of PIN is qualitatively reproduced by this minimum model. Some properties characteristic of relaxors such as nano-scale domain formation, slow dynamics and dispersive dielectric responses are also examined.

Magnetic properties of the spin-1/2 XXZ model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice: Effect of long-range interactions

We study magnetic properties of the $S=1/2$ Ising-like XXZ model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattices with long-range interactions, using the quantum Monte Carlo method. This model shows magnetization plateau phases at one-half and one-third of the saturation magnetization when additional couplings are considered. We investigate the finite temperature transition to one-half and one-third plateau phases. The obtained results suggest that the former case is of the first order and the latter case is of the second order. We also find that the system undergoes two successive transitions with the 2D Ising model universality, although there is a single phase transition in the Ising limit case. Finally, we estimate the coupling ratio to explain the magnetization process observed in ${\rm TmB_4}$

Magnetic Properties of 2-Dimensional Dipolar Squares: Boundary Geometry Dependence

By means of the molecular dynamics simulation on gradual cooling processes, we investigate magnetic properties of classical spin systems only with the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, which we call dipolar systems. Focusing on their finite-size effect, particularly their boundary geometry dependence, we study two finite dipolar squares cut out from a square lattice with $Φ=0$ and $π/4$, where $Φ$ is an angle between the direction of the lattice axis and that of the square boundary. Distinctly different results are obtained in the two dipolar squares. In the $Φ=0$ square, the ``from-edge-to-interior freezing'' of spins is observed. Its ground state has a multi-domain structure whose domains consist of the two among infinitely (continuously) degenerated Luttinger-Tisza (LT) ground-state orders on a bulk square lattice, i.e., the two antiferromagnetically aligned ferromagnetic chains (af-FMC) orders directed in parallel to the two lattice axes. In the $Φ=π/4$ square, on the other hand, the freezing starts from the interior of the square, and its ground state is nearly in a single domain with one of the two af-FMC orders. These geometry effects are argued to originate from the anisotropic nature of the dipole-dipole interaction which depends on the relative direction of sites in a real space of the interacting spins.

Finite dipolar hexagonal columns on piled layers of triangular lattice

We have investigated, by the Monte Carlo simulation, spin systems which represent moments of arrayed magnetic nanoparticles interacting with each other only by the dipole-dipole interaction. In the present paper we aim the understanding of finite size effects on the magnetic nanoparticles arrayed in hexagonal columns cut out from the close-packing structures or from those with uniaxial compression. In columns with the genuine close-packing structures, we observe a single vortex state which is also observed previously in finite 2-dimensional systems. On the other hand in the system with the inter-layer distance set $1/\sqrt{2}$ times of the close-packing one, we found ground states which depend on the number of layers. The dependence is induced by a finite size effect and is related to a orientation transition in the corresponding bulk system.

Spin melting and refreezing driven by uniaxial compression on a dipolar hexagonal plate

We investigate freezing characteristics of a finite dipolar hexagonal plate by the Monte Carlo simulation. The hexagonal plate is cut out from a piled triangular lattice of three layers with FCC-like (ABCABC) stacking structure. In the present study an annealing simulation is performed for the dipolar plate uniaxially compressed in the direction of layer-piling. We find spin melting and refreezing driven by the uniaxial compression. Each of the melting and refreezing corresponds one-to-one with a change of the ground states induced by compression. The freezing temperatures of the ground-state orders differ significantly from each other, which gives rise to the spin melting and refreezing of the present interest. We argue that these phenomena are originated by a finite size effect combined with peculiar anisotropic nature of the dipole-dipole interaction.

A Note on Stable States of Dipolar Systems at Low Temperatures

In the past several years, many important innovations in nanotechnology were made. Today it becomes possible to make nanosize magnetic particles, and development of high storage-density magnetic device is desired. In such a magnetic particle system, dipole interaction plays the main role. In this note, we consider stable states of dipolar systems at low temperature: Some systems show ``antiferromagnetic structure'', and others show magnetic domain structure, depending on lattice shapes.

Peculiar from-Edge-to-Interior Spin Freezing in a Magnetic Dipolar Cube

By molecular dynamics simulation, we have investigated classical Heisenberg spins, which are arrayed on a finite simple cubic lattice and interact with each other only by the dipole-dipole interaction, and have found its peculiar it from-Edge-to-interior freezing process. As the temperature is decreased, spins on each edge predominantly start to freeze in a ferromagnetic alignment parallel to the edge around the corresponding bulk transition temperature, then from each edges grow domains with short-range orders similar to the corresponding bulk orders, and the system ends up with a unique multi-domain ground state at the lowest temperature. We interpret this freezing characteristics is attributed to the anisotropic and long-range nature of the dipole-dipole interaction combined with a finite-size effect.

Study of the Fully Frustrated Clock Model using the Wang-Landau Algorithm

Monte Carlo simulations using the newly proposed Wang-Landau algorithm together with the broad histogram relation are performed to study the antiferromagnetic six-state clock model on the triangular lattice, which is fully frustrated. We confirm the existence of the magnetic ordering belonging to the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type phase transition followed by the chiral ordering which occurs at slightly higher temperature. We also observe the lower temperature phase transition of KT type due to the discrete symmetry of the clock model. By using finite-size scaling analysis, the higher KT temperature $T_2$ and the chiral critical temperature $T_c$ are respectively estimated as $T_2=0.5154(8)$ and $T_c=0.5194(4)$. The results are in favor of the double transition scenario. The lower KT temperature is estimated as $T_1=0.496(2)$. Two decay exponents of KT transitions corresponding to higher and lower temperatures are respectively estimated as $η_2=0.25(1)$ and $η_1=0.13(1)$, which suggests that the exponents associated with the KT transitions are universal even for the frustrated model.

Novel Monte Carlo algorithms and their applications

We describe a generalized scheme for the probability-changing cluster (PCC) algorithm, based on the study of the finite-size scaling property of the correlation ratio, the ratio of the correlation functions with different distances. We apply this generalized PCC algorithm to the two-dimensional 6-state clock model. We also discuss the combination of the cluster algorithm and the extended ensemble method. We derive a rigorous broad histogram relation for the bond number. A Monte Carlo dynamics based on the number of potential moves for the bond number is proposed, and applied to the three-dimensional Ising and 3-state Potts models.

Finite-size Scaling of Correlation Ratio and Generalized Scheme for the Probability-Changing Cluster Algorithm

We study the finite-size scaling (FSS) property of the correlation ratio, the ratio of the correlation functions with different distances. It is shown that the correlation ratio is a good estimator to determine the critical point of the second-order transition using the FSS analysis. The correlation ratio is especially useful for the analysis of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition. We also present a generalized scheme of the probability-changing cluster algorithm, which has been recently developed by the present authors, based on the FSS property of the correlation ratio. We investigate the two-dimensional quantum XY model of spin 1/2 with this generalized scheme, obtaining the precise estimate of the KT transition temperature with less numerical effort.

Probability-Changing Cluster Algorithm: Study of Three-Dimensional Ising Model and Percolation Problem

We present a detailed description of the idea and procedure for the newly proposed Monte Carlo algorithm of tuning the critical point automatically, which is called the probability-changing cluster (PCC) algorithm [Y. Tomita and Y. Okabe, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86} (2001) 572]. Using the PCC algorithm, we investigate the three-dimensional Ising model and the bond percolation problem. We employ a refined finite-size scaling analysis to make estimates of critical point and exponents. With much less efforts, we obtain the results which are consistent with the previous calculations. We argue several directions for the application of the PCC algorithm.

Probability-Changing Cluster Algorithm for Two-Dimensional XY and Clock Models

We extend the newly proposed probability-changing cluster (PCC) Monte Carlo algorithm to the study of systems with the vector order parameter. Wolff's idea of the embedded cluster formalism is used for assigning clusters. The Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transitions for the two-dimensional (2D) XY and $q$-state clock models are studied by using the PCC algorithm. Combined with the finite-size scaling analysis based on the KT form of the correlation length, $ξ\propto \exp(c/\sqrt{T/T_{\rm KT}-1})$, we determine the KT transition temperature and the decay exponent $η$ as $T_{\rm KT}=0.8933(6)$ and $η=0.243(5)$ for the 2D XY model. We investigate two transitions of the KT type for the 2D $q$-state clock models with $q=6,8,12$, and {\it for the first time} confirm the prediction of $η= 4/q^2$ at $T_1$, the low-temperature critical point between the ordered and XY-like phases, systematically.

Crossover and self-averaging in the two-dimensional site-diluted Ising model

Using the newly proposed probability-changing cluster (PCC) Monte Carlo algorithm, we simulate the two-dimensional (2D) site-diluted Ising model. Since we can tune the critical point of each random sample automatically with the PCC algorithm, we succeed in studying the sample-dependent $T_c(L)$ and the sample average of physical quantities at each $T_c(L)$ systematically. Using the finite-size scaling (FSS) analysis for $T_c(L)$, we discuss the importance of corrections to FSS both in the strong-dilution and weak-dilution regions. The critical phenomena of the 2D site-diluted Ising model are shown to be controlled by the pure fixed point. The crossover from the percolation fixed point to the pure Ising fixed point with the system size is explicitly demonstrated by the study of the Binder parameter. We also study the distribution of critical temperature $T_c(L)$. Its variance shows the power-law $L$ dependence, $L^{-n}$, and the estimate of the exponent $n$ is consistent with the prediction of Aharony and Harris [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 77}, 3700 (1996)]. Calculating the relative variance of critical magnetization at the sample-dependent $T_c(L)$, we show that the 2D site-diluted Ising model exhibits weak self-averaging.

Probability-Changing Cluster Algorithm for Potts Models

We propose a new effective cluster algorithm of tuning the critical point automatically, which is an extended version of Swendsen-Wang algorithm. We change the probability of connecting spins of the same type, $p = 1 - e^{- J/ k_BT}$, in the process of the Monte Carlo spin update. Since we approach the canonical ensemble asymptotically, we can use the finite-size scaling analysis for physical quantities near the critical point. Simulating the two-dimensional Potts models to demonstrate the validity of the algorithm, we have obtained the critical temperatures and critical exponents which are consistent with the exact values; the comparison has been made with the invaded cluster algorithm.
