Finite-size scaling for the Ising model on the Moebius strip and the Klein bottle

We study the finite-size scaling properties of the Ising model on the Moebius strip and the Klein bottle. The results are compared with those of the Ising model under different boundary conditions, that is, the free, cylindrical, and toroidal boundary conditions. The difference in the magnetization distribution function $p(m)$ for various boundary conditions is discussed in terms of the number of the percolating clusters and the cluster size. We also find interesting aspect-ratio dependence of the value of the Binder parameter at $T=T_c$ for various boundary conditions. We discuss the relation to the finite-size correction calculations for the dimer statistics.

Probability-Changing Cluster Algorithm for Potts Models

We propose a new effective cluster algorithm of tuning the critical point automatically, which is an extended version of Swendsen-Wang algorithm. We change the probability of connecting spins of the same type, $p = 1 - e^{- J/ k_BT}$, in the process of the Monte Carlo spin update. Since we approach the canonical ensemble asymptotically, we can use the finite-size scaling analysis for physical quantities near the critical point. Simulating the two-dimensional Potts models to demonstrate the validity of the algorithm, we have obtained the critical temperatures and critical exponents which are consistent with the exact values; the comparison has been made with the invaded cluster algorithm.

Cluster Analysis of the Ising Model and Universal Finite-Size Scaling

The recent progress in the study of finite-size scaling (FSS) properties of the Ising model is briefly reviewed. We calculate the universal FSS functions for the Binder parameter $g$ and the magnetization distribution function $p(m)$ for the Ising model on $L_1 \times L_2$ two-dimensional lattices with tilted boundary conditions. We show that the FSS functions are universal for fixed sets of the aspect ratio $L_1/L_2$ and the tilt parameter. We also study the percolating properties of the Ising model, giving attention to the effects of the aspect ratio of finite systems. We elucidate the origin of the complex structure of $p(m)$ for the system with large aspect ratio by the multiple-percolating-cluster argument.

Reducing quasi-ergodicity in a double well potential by Tsallis Monte Carlo simulation

A new Monte Carlo scheme based on the system of Tsallis's generalized statistical mechanics is applied to a simple double well potential to calculate the canonical thermal average of potential energy. Although we observed serious quasi-ergodicity when using the standard Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm, this problem is largely reduced by the use of the new Monte Carlo algorithm. Therefore the ergodicity is guaranteed even for short Monte Carlo steps if we use this new canonical Monte Carlo scheme.

Application of Monte Carlo Method to Phase Separation Dynamics of Complex Systems

We report the application of the Monte Carlo simulation to phase separation dynamics. First, we deal with the phase separation under shear flow. The thermal effect on the phase separation is discussed, and the anisotropic growth exponents in the late stage are estimated. Next, we study the effect of surfactants on the three-component solvents. We obtain the mixture of macrophase separation and microphase separation, and investigate the dynamics of both phase separations.

Shape Effects of Finite-Size Scaling Functions for Anisotropic Three-Dimensional Ising Models

The finite-size scaling functions for anisotropic three-dimensional Ising models of size $L_1 \times L_1 \times aL_1$ ($a$: anisotropy parameter) are studied by Monte Carlo simulations. We study the $a$ dependence of finite-size scaling functions of the Binder parameter $g$ and the magnetization distribution function $p(m)$. We have shown that the finite-size scaling functions for $p(m)$ at the critical temperature change from a two-peak structure to a single-peak one by increasing or decreasing $a$ from 1. We also study the finite-size scaling near the critical temperature of the layered square-lattice Ising model, when the systems have a large two-dimensional anisotropy. We have found the three-dimensional and two-dimensional finite-size scaling behavior depending on the parameter which is fixed; a unified view of 3D and 2D finite-size scaling behavior has been obtained for the anisotropic 3D Ising models.

Cluster Analysis and Finite-Size Scaling for Ising Spin Systems

Based on the connection between the Ising model and a correlated percolation model, we calculate the distribution function for the fraction ($c$) of lattice sites in percolating clusters in subgraphs with $n$ percolating clusters, $f_n(c)$, and the distribution function for magnetization ($m$) in subgraphs with $n$ percolating clusters, $p_n(m)$. We find that $f_n(c)$ and $p_n(m)$ have very good finite-size scaling behavior and they have universal finite-size scaling functions for the model on square, plane triangular, and honeycomb lattices when aspect ratios of these lattices have the proportions 1:$\sqrt 3$/2:$\sqrt 3$. The complex structure of the magnetization distribution function $p(m)$ for the system with large aspect ratio could be understood from the independent orientations of two or more percolation clusters in such system.

Application of exchange Monte Carlo method to ordering dynamics

We apply the exchange Monte Carlo method to the ordering dynamics of the three-state Potts model with the conserved order parameter. Even for the deeply quenched case to low temperatures, we have observed a rapid domain growth; we have proved the efficiency of the exchange Monte Carlo method for the ordering process. The late-stage growth law has been found to be $R(t) \sim t^{1/3}$ for the case of conserved order parameter of three-component system.

Multi-Spin Coding of the Monte Carlo Simulation of the Three-State Random Potts Model and the Block-Spin Transformation

The multi-spin coding of the Monte Carlo simulation of the three-state Potts model on the simple cubic lattice is presented. The ferromagnetic (F) model, the antiferromagnetic (AF) model, and the random mixture of the F and AF couplings are treated. The multi-spin coding technique is also applied to the block-spin transformation. The block-spin transformation of the F Potts model is simply realized by the majority rule, whereas the AF three-state Potts model is transformed to the block spin having a six-fold symmetry.

Universal Finite-Size-Scaling Functions

The idea of universal finite-size-scaling functions of the Ising model is tested by Monte Carlo simulations for various lattices. Not only regular lattices such as the square lattice but quasiperiodic lattices such as the Penrose lattice are treated. We show that the finite-size-scaling functions of the order parameter for various lattices are collapsed on a single curve by choosing two nonuniversal scaling metric factors. We extend the idea of the universal finite-size-scaling functions to the order-parameter distribution function. We pay attention to the effects of boundary conditions. Keywords: Universal Finite-Size-Scaling Function; Ising Model; Order-Parameter Probability Distribution Function.

Statistical Dependence Analysis

We review our recent studies on the dynamical correlations in MC simulations from the view point of the statistical dependence. Attentions are paid to the reduction of the statistical degrees of freedom for correlated data. Possible biases on several cumulants, such as the susceptibility and the Binder number due to finite MC length are discussed. A new method for calculating the equilibrium relaxation time from the analysis of the statistical dependence is presented. We apply it to the critical dynamics of the Ising model to estimate the dynamical critical exponent accurately.

Statistical Dependence and Related Topics

On the basis of the dynamical interpretation of Monte Carlo simulations, we discuss the relation of the equilibrium relaxation time, the susceptibility and the statistical error. We introduce a new quantity called {\it the statistical dependence time} $τ_{dep}$, which gives the reduction factor for the statistical degree of freedom due to the dynamical correlations between the data. A new method is proposed for calculating equilibrium relaxation time using $τ_{dep}$, the method which does not require knowledge of any time-displaced correlation function. We apply this method to the critical dynamics of Ising models in two and three dimensions, and estimate the dynamical critical exponent $z$ precisely. Systematic errors in response functions due to short simulations are also discussed from the viewpoint of the statistical dependence.

Recycle of random sequences

The correlation between a random sequence and its transformed sequences is studied. In the case of a permutation operation or, in other word, the shuffling operation, it is shown that the correlation can be so small that the sequences can be regarded as independent random sequences. The applications to the Monte Carlo simulations are also given. This method is especially useful in the Ising Monte Carlo simulation.
