Primal-dual $\varepsilon$-Subgradient Method for Distributed Optimization

This paper studies the distributed optimization problem when the objective functions might be nondifferentiable and subject to heterogeneous set constraints. Unlike existing subgradient methods, we focus on the case when the exact subgradients of the local objective functions can not be accessed by the agents. To solve this problem, we propose a projected primal-dual dynamics using only the objective function's approximate subgradients. We first prove that the formulated optimization problem can generally be solved with an error depending upon the accuracy of the available subgradients. Then, we show the exact solvability of this distributed optimization problem when the accumulated approximation error of inexact subgradients is not too large. After that, we also give a novel componentwise normalized variant to improve the transient behavior of the convergent sequence. The effectiveness of our algorithms is verified by a numerical example.

Nash Equilibrium Seeking for High-order Multi-agent Systems with Unknown Dynamics

In this paper, we consider a Nash equilibrium seeking problem for a class of high-order multi-agent systems with unknown dynamics. Different from existing results for single integrators, we aim to steer the outputs of this class of uncertain high-order agents to the Nash equilibrium of some noncooperative game in a distributed manner. To overcome the difficulties brought by the high-order structure, unknown nonlinearities, and the regulation requirement, we first introduce a virtual player for each agent and solve an auxiliary noncooperative game for them. Then, we develop a distributed adaptive protocol by embedding this auxiliary game dynamics into some proper tracking controller for the original agent to resolve this problem. We also discuss the parameter convergence problem under certain persistence of excitation condition. The efficacy of our algorithms is verified by numerical examples.

Achieving Optimal Output Consensus for Discrete-time Linear Multi-agent Systems with Disturbance Rejection

In this paper, an optimal output consensus problem is studied for discrete-time linear multiagent systems subject to external disturbances. Each agent is assigned with a local cost function which is known only to itself. Distributed protocols are to be designed to guarantee an output consensus for these high-order agents and meanwhile minimize the aggregate cost as the sum of these local costs. To overcome the difficulties brought by high-order dynamics and external disturbances, we develop an embedded design and constructively present a distributed rule to solve this problem. The proposed control includes three terms: an optimal signal generator under a directed information graph, an observer-based compensator to reject these disturbances, and a reference tracking controller for these linear agents. It is shown to solve the formulated problem with some mild assumptions. A numerical example is also provided to illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed distributed control laws.

A Dielectric Metasurface Optical Chip for the Generation of Cold Atoms

Compact and robust cold atom sources are increasingly important for quantum research, especially for transferring cutting-edge quantum science into practical applications. In this letter, we report on a novel scheme that utilizes a metasurface optical chip to replace the conventional bulky optical elements used to produce a cold atomic ensemble with a single incident laser beam, which is split by the metasurface into multiple beams of the desired polarization states. Atom numbers $~10^7$ and temperatures (about 35 $μ$K) of relevance to quantum sensing are achieved in a compact and robust fashion. Our work highlights the substantial progress towards fully integrated cold atom quantum devices by exploiting metasurface optical chips, which may have great potential in quantum sensing, quantum computing and other areas.

Multi-agent Optimal Consensus with Unknown Control Directions

This paper studies an optimal consensus problem for a group of heterogeneous high-order agents with unknown control directions. Compared with existing consensus results, the consensus point is further required to an optimal solution to some distributed optimization problem. To solve this problem, we first augment each agent with an optimal signal generator to reproduce the global optimal point of the given distributed optimization problem, and then complete the global optimal consensus design by developing some adaptive tracking controllers for these augmented agents. Moreover, we present an extension when only real-time gradients are available. The trajectories of all agents in both cases are shown to be well-defined and achieve the expected consensus on the optimal point. Two numerical examples are given to verify the efficacy of our algorithms.

Optimal Output Consensus for Nonlinear Multi-agent Systems with Both Static and Dynamic Uncertainties

In this technical note, we investigate an optimal output consensus problem for heterogeneous uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems. The considered agents are described by high-order nonlinear dynamics subject to both static and dynamic uncertainties. A two-step design, comprising sequential constructions of optimal signal generator and distributed partial stabilization feedback controller, is developed to overcome the difficulties brought by nonlinearities, uncertainties, and optimal requirements. Our study can not only assure an output consensus, but also achieve an optimal agreement characterized by a distributed optimization problem.

Nonlinear metasurfaces governed by bound states in the continuum

Nonlinear nanostructured surfaces provide a paradigm shift in nonlinear optics with new ways to control and manipulate frequency conversion processes at the nanoscale, also offering novel opportunities for applications in photonics, chemistry, material science, and biosensing. Here, we develop a general approach to employ sharp resonances in metasurfaces originated from the physics of bound states in the continuum for both engineering and enhancing the nonlinear response. We study experimentally the third-harmonic generation from metasurfaces composed of symmetry-broken silicon meta-atoms and reveal that the harmonic generation intensity depends critically on the asymmetry parameter. We employ the concept of the critical coupling of light to the metasurface resonances to uncover the effect of radiative and nonradiative losses on the nonlinear conversion efficiency.

Distributed Optimization for a Class of High-order Nonlinear Multi-agent Systems with Unknown Dynamics

In this paper, we study a distributed optimization problem for a class of high-order multi-agent systems with unknown dynamics. In comparison with existing results for integrators or linear agents, we need to overcome the difficulties brought by the unknown nonlinearities and also the optimization requirement. For this purpose, we employ an embedded control based design and first convert this problem into an output stabilization problem. Then, two kinds of adaptive controllers are given for these agents to drive their outputs to the global optimal solution under some mild conditions. Finally, we show that the estimated parameter vector converges to the true parameter vector under some well-known persistence of excitation condition. The efficacy of these algorithms was verified by a simulation example.

Distributed Optimal Steady-State Regulation for High-Order Multi-Agent Systems with External Disturbances

In this paper, a distributed optimal steady-state regulation problem is formulated and investigated for heterogeneous linear multi-agent systems subject to external disturbances. We aim to steer this high-order multi-agent network to a prescribed steady-state determined as the optimal solution of a resource allocation problem in a distributed way. To solve this problem, we employ an embedded control design and convert the formulated problem to two simpler subproblems. Then, both state-feedback and output feedback controls are presented under mild assumptions to solve this problem with disturbance rejection. Moreover, we extend these results to the case with only real-time gradient information by high-gain control techniques. Finally, numerical simulations verify their effectiveness.

Controlling light with nonlinear quasicrystal metasurfaces

Metasurface, a kind of two-dimensional structured medium, represents a novel platform to manipulate the propagation of light at subwavelength scale. In linear optical regime, many interesting topics such as planar metalens, metasurface optical holography and so on have been widely investigated. Recently, metasurfaces go into nonlinear optical regime. While it is recognized that the local symmetry of the meta-atoms plays vital roles, its relationship with global symmetry of the nonlinear metasurfaces remains elusive. According to the Penrose tiling and the newly proposed hexagonal quasicrystalline tiling, here we designed and fabricated the nonlinear optical quasicrystal metasurfaces based on the geometric phase controlled plasmonic meta-atoms with local rotational symmetry. The second harmonic waves will be determined by both the tiling schemes of quasicrystal metasurfaces and the local symmetry of meta-atoms they consist of. The proposed concept opens new routes for designing nonlinear metasurface crystals with desired optical functionalities.

Giant Enhancement of Third Harmonic Generation from Ge2Sb2Te5 based Fabry-Perot Cavity

Third-order harmonic generation (THG) plays a vital role in microscopy, optical communications etc. Conventional methods of obtaining efficient THG in macroscopic crystal is already mature; however, they will finally limit the miniaturization and integration of on-chip laser sources. To date, THG from either photonic crystals or metamaterials provide compact photonic platforms, however selection of materials remains elusive. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate a giant enhancement of THG efficiency from an air/high index Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST225) /gold multi-layered Fabry-Perot cavity. At cavity resonant wavelength in near-infrared regime, the efficiency of THG from a 50 nm thick amorphous GST225 planar film is boosted by 422 times compared to that of nonresonant conditions. Interestingly, the THG efficiency has a dramatic decrease of three orders when the structural state of GST225 is transformed from amorphous to crystalline. Our findings have a potential for achieving ultra-compact nonlinear optical source with high efficiency and switchable functionality.

Optimal Output Consensus of High-Order Multi-Agent Systems with Embedded Technique

In this paper, we study an optimal output consensus problem for a multi-agent network with agents in the form of multi-input multi-output minimum-phase dynamics. Optimal output consensus can be taken as an extended version of the existing output consensus problem for higher-order agents with an optimization requirement, where the output variables of agents are driven to achieve a consensus on the optimal solution of a global cost function. To solve this problem, we first construct an optimal signal generator, and then propose an embedded control scheme by embedding the generator in the feedback loop. We give two kinds of algorithms based on different available information along with both state feedback and output feedback, and prove that these algorithms with the embedded technique can guarantee the solvability of the problem for high-order multi-agent systems under standard assumptions.

Planar Cassegrain-type Schwarzschild Objective with Optical Metasurfaces

Curved reflective mirrors play an indispensable role in widely-employed Cassegrain-type optics, which consequently are inevitably bulky, and thus neither integratable nor well extendable. Through substituting geometric phase based reflective metasurfaces for curved mirrors, here a planar Cassegrain-type Schwarzschild objective is obtained, with both the focusing and imaging functionalities experimentally verified. The planar reflective objective achieved is intrinsically free of residual light and thus imposes less stringent restrictions on illuminating light and nanofabrications compared to its refractive counterpart. Our planar Cassegrain-type designs can potentially reshape and simplify the core components of the microscope and telescope systems working at a broadband spectral range, and thus opens new avenues for designing compact imaging systems.

Distributed Coordination for a Class of Nonlinear Multi-agent Systems with Regulation Constraints

In this paper, a multi-agent coordination problem with steady-state regulation constraints is investigated for a class of nonlinear systems. Unlike existing leader-following coordination formulations, the reference signal is not given by a dynamic autonomous leader but determined as the optimal solution of a distributed optimization problem. Furthermore, we consider a global constraint having noisy data observations for the optimization problem, which implies that reference signal is not trivially available with existing optimization algorithms. To handle those challenges, we present a passivity-based analysis and design approach by using only local objective function, local data observation and exchanged information from their neighbors. The proposed distributed algorithms are shown to achieve the optimal steady-state regulation by rejecting the unknown observation disturbances for passive nonlinear agents, which are persuasive in various practical problems. Applications and simulation examples are then given to verify the effectiveness of our design.

Output Average Consensus Over Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems via Two-Level Approach

In this paper, a novel two-level framework was proposed and applied to solve the output average consensus problem over heterogeneous multi-agent systems. This approach is mainly based on the recent technique of system abstraction. For given multi-agent systems, we first constructed their abstractions as the upper level and solved their average consensus problem by leveraging well-known results for single integrators. Then the control protocols for physical agents in the lower level were synthesized in a hierarchical way by embedding the designed law for abstractions into an interface between two levels. In this way, the complexity coming from heterogeneous dynamics of agents is totally decoupled from that of the coordination task and the communication topologies. An example was given to show its effectiveness.

Coordination of Heterogeneous Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems with Prescribed Behaviors

In this paper, we consider a coordination problem for a class of heterogeneous nonlinear multi-agent systems with a prescribed input-output behavior which was represented by another input-driven system. In contrast to most existing multi-agent coordination results with an autonomous (virtual) leader, this formulation takes possible control inputs of the leader into consideration. First, the coordination was achieved by utilizing a group of distributed observers based on conventional assumptions of model matching problem. Then, a fully distributed adaptive extension was proposed without using the input of this input-output behavior. An example was given to verify their effectiveness.

Coordination of Multi-Agent Systems under Switching Topologies via Disturbance Observer Based Approach

In this paper, a leader-following coordination problem of heterogeneous multi-agent systems is considered under switching topologies where each agent is subject to some local (unbounded) disturbances. While these unknown disturbances may disrupt the performance of agents, a disturbance observer based approach is employed to estimate and reject them. Varying communication topologies are also taken into consideration, and their byproduct difficulties are overcome by using common Lyapunov function techniques. According to the available information in difference cases, two disturbance observer based protocols are proposed to solve this problem. Their effectiveness is verified by simulations.

Distributed Output Regulation for a Class of Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems with Unknown-Input Leaders

In this paper, a distributed output regulation problem is formulated for a class of uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems subject to local disturbances. The formulation is given to study a leader-following problem when the leader contains unknown inputs and its dynamics is different from those of the followers. Based on the conventional output regulation assumptions and graph theory, distributed feedback controllers are constructed to make the agents globally or semi-globally follow the uncertain leader even when the bound of the leader's inputs is unknown to the followers.
