The Interplay of Charge and Spin in Quantum Dots: The Ising Case

The physics of quantum dots is succinctly depicted by the {\it Universal Hamiltonian}, where only zero mode interactions are included. In the case where the latter involve charging and isotropic spin-exchange terms, this would lead to a non-Abelian action. Here we address an Ising spin-exchange interaction, which leads to an Abelian action. The analysis of this simplified yet non-trivial model shed some light on a more general case of charge and spin entanglement. We present a calculation of the tunneling density of states and of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility. Our results are amenable to experimental study and may allow for an experimental determination of the exchange interaction strength.

Spin and Charge Correlations in Quantum Dots: An Exact Solution

The inclusion of charging and spin-exchange interactions within the Universal Hamiltonian description of quantum dots is challenging as it leads to a non-Abelian action. Here we present an {\it exact} analytical solution of the probem, in particular, in the vicinity of the Stoner instabilty point. We calculate several observables, including the tunneling density of states (TDOS) and the spin susceptibility. Near the instability point the TDOS exhibits a non-monotonous behavior as function of the tunneling energy, even at temperatures higher than the exchange energy. Our approach is generalizable to a broad set of observables, including the a.c. susceptibility and the absorption spectrum for anisotropic spin interaction. Our results could be tested in nearly ferromagnetic materials.

Full counting statistics of Luttinger liquid conductor

Non-equilibrium bosonization technique is used to study current fluctuations of interacting electrons in a single-channel quantum wire representing a Luttinger liquid (LL) conductor. An exact expression for the full counting statistics of the transmitted charge is derived. It is given by Fredholm determinant of the counting operator with a time dependent scattering phase. The result has a form of counting statistics of non-interacting particles with fractional charges, induced by scattering off the boundaries between the LL wire and the non-interacting leads.

Bosonization of one dimensional fermions out of equilibrium

Bosonization technique for one-dimensional fermions out of equilibrium is developed in the framework of the Keldysh action formalism. We first demonstrate how this approach is implemented for free fermions and for the problem of non-equilibrium Fermi edge singularity. We then employ the technique to study an interacting quantum wire attached to two electrodes with arbitrary energy distributions. The non-equilibrium electron Green functions, which can be measured via tunneling spectroscopy technique and carry the information about energy distribution, zero-bias anomaly, and dephasing, are expressed in terms of functional determinants of single-particle "counting" operators. The corresponding time-dependent scattering phase is found to be intrinsically related to "fractionalization" of electron-hole excitations in the tunneling process and at boundaries with leads. Results are generalized to the case of spinful particles as well to Green functions at different spatial points (relevant to the problem of dephasing in Luttinger liquid interferometers). For double-step distributions, the dephasing rates are oscillatory functions of the interaction strength.

Bosonization out of equilibrium

We develop a bosonization technique for one-dimensional fermions out of equilibrium. The approach is used to study a quantum wire attached to two electrodes with arbitrary energy distributions. The non-equilibrium electron Green function is expressed in terms of functional determinants of a single-particle``counting'' operator with a time-dependent scattering phase. The result reveals an intrinsic relation of dephasing and energy redistribution in Luttinger-liquids to ``fractionalization'' of electron-hole excitations in the tunneling process and at boundaries with leads.

Tunneling spectroscopy of Luttinger-liquid structures far from equilibrium

We develop a theory of tunneling spectroscopy of interacting electrons in a non-equilibrium quantum wire coupled to reservoirs. The problem is modelled as an out-of-equilibrium Luttinger liquid with spatially dependent interaction. The interaction leads to the renormalization of the tunneling density of states, as well as to the redistribution of electrons over energies. Energy relaxation is controlled by plasmon scattering at the boundaries between regions with different interaction strength, and affects the distribution function of electrons in the wire as well as that of electrons emitted from the interacting regions into non-interacting electrodes.

Decoherence and interactions in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer

We develop a theoretical description of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer built from integer quantum Hall edge states, with an emphasis on how electron-electron interactions produce decoherence. We calculate the visibility of interference fringes and noise power, as a function of bias voltage and of temperature. Interactions are treated exactly, by using bosonization and considering edge states that are only weakly coupled via tunneling at the interferometer beam-splitters. In this weak-tunneling limit, we show that the bias-dependence of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in source-drain conductance and noise power provides a direct measure of the one-electron correlation function for an isolated quantum Hall edge state. We find the asymptotic form of this correlation function for systems with either short-range interactions or unscreened Coulomb interactions, extracting a dephasing length $\ell_ϕ$ that varies with temperature $T$ as $\ell_ϕ \propto T^{-3}$ in the first case and as $\ell_ϕ \propto T^{-1} \ln^2(T)$ in the second case.

Decoherence of Rabi oscillations of electronic spin states in a double quantum dot

We study the role of charge fluctuations in the decoherence of Rabi oscillations between spin states |$\uparrow \downarrow$>, |$\downarrow \uparrow$> of two electrons in a double dot structure. We consider the effects of fluctuations in energy and in the quantum state of the system, both in the classical and quantum limit. The role of state fluctuations is shown to be of leading order at sufficiently high temperature, applicable to actual experiments. At low temperature the low frequency energy fluctuations are the only dominant contribution.

Weak values under uncertain conditions

We analyze the average of weak values over statistical ensembles of pre- and post-selected states. The protocol of weak values, proposed by Aharonov et al., is the result of a weak measurement conditional on the outcome of a subsequent strong (projective) measurement. Weak values can be beyond the range of eigenvalues of the measured observable and, in general, can be complex numbers. We show that averaging over ensembles of pre- and post-selected states reduces the weak value within the range of eigenvalues of the measured operator. We further show that the averaged result expressed in terms of pre- and post-selected density matrices, allows us to include the effect of decoherence.

Transmission phase of a quantum dot: Testing the role of population switching

We propose a controlled experiment to clarify the physical mechanism causing phase lapses of the amplitude for electron transmission through nanoscale devices. Such lapses are generically observed in valleys between adjacent Coulomb--blockade peaks. The experiment involves two quantum dots embedded in the same arm of an Aharonov--Bohm interferometer. It offers a decisive test of "population switching", one of the leading contenders for an explanation of the phenomenon.

Tomography of many-body weak values: Mach-Zehnder interferometry

We propose and study a weak value (WV) protocol in the context of a solid state setup, specifically, an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer. This is the first specific proposal to measure both the real and imaginary part (i.e., complete tomography) of a WV. We also analyze the manifestation of many-body physics in the WV to be measured, including finite temperature and shot-noise-like contributions.

Non-equilibrium Luttinger liquid: Zero-bias anomaly and dephasing

A one-dimensional system of interacting electrons out of equilibrium is studied in the framework of the Luttinger liquid model. We analyze several setups and develop a theory of tunneling into such systems. A remarkable property of the problem is the absence of relaxation in energy distribution functions of left- and right-movers, yet the presence of the finite dephasing rate due to electron-electron scattering, which smears zero-bias-anomaly singularities in the tunneling density of states.

Towards a dephasing diode: asymmetric and geometric dephasing

We study the effect of a noisy environment on spin and charge transport in ballistic quantum wires with spin-orbit coupling (Rashba coupling). We find that the wire then acts as a ``dephasing diode'', inducing very different dephasing of the spins of right and left movers. We also show how Berry phase (geometric phase) in a curved wire can induce such asymmetric dephasing, in addition to purely geometric dephasing. We propose ways to measure these effects through spin detectors, spin-echo techniques, and Aharanov-Bohm interferometry.

Weak values of electron spin in a double quantum dot

We propose a protocol for a controlled experiment to measure a weak value of the electron's spin in a solid state device. The weak value is obtained by a two step procedure -- weak measurement followed by a strong one (post-selection), where the outcome of the first measurement is kept provided a second post-selected outcome occurs. The set-up consists of a double quantum dot and a weakly coupled quantum point contact to be used as a detector. Anomalously large values of the spin of a two electron system are predicted, as well as negative values of the total spin. We also show how to incorporate the adverse effect of decoherence into this procedure.

Shot Noise in Anyonic Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

We show how shot noise in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the fractional quantum Hall regime probes the charge and statistics of quantum Hall quasiparticles. The dependence of the noise on the magnetic flux through the interferometer allows for a simple way to distinguish Abelian from non-Abelian quasiparticle statistics. In the Abelian case, the Fano factor (in units of the electron charge) is always lower than unity. In the non-Abelian case, the maximal Fano factor as a function of the magnetic flux exceeds one.

Zero bias anomaly out of equilibrium

The non-equilibrium zero bias anomaly (ZBA) in the tunneling density of states of a diffusive metallic film is studied. An effective action describing virtual fluctuations out-of-equilibrium is derived. The singular behavior of the equilibrium ZBA is smoothed out by real processes of inelastic scattering.

Transmission phase lapses in quantum dots: the role of dot-lead coupling asymmetry

Lapses of transmission phase in transport through quantum dots are ubiquitous already in the absence of interaction, in which case their precise location is determined by the signs and magnitudes of the tunnelling matrix elements. However, actual measurements for a quantum dot embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer show systematic sequences of phase lapses separated by Coulomb peaks -- an issue that attracted much attention and generated controversy. Using a two-level quantum dot as an example we show that this phenomenon can be accounted for by the combined effect of asymmetric dot-lead couplings (left lead/right lead asymmetry as well as different level broadening for different levels) and interaction-induced "population switching" of the levels, rendering this behaviour generic. We construct and analyse a mean field scheme for an interacting quantum dot, and investigate the properties of the mean field solution, paying special attention to the character of its dependence (continuous vs. discontinuous) on the chemical potential or gate voltage.

Suppression of Visibility in a Two-Electron Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

We investigate the suppression of the visibility of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a two-electron Mach-Zehnder interferometer that leaves the single-electron current unchanged. In the case when the sources emit either spin-polarized or entangled electrons, partial distinguishability of electrons (coming from two different sources) suppresses the visibility. Two-particle entanglement may produce behavior similar to "dephasing" of two-particle interferometry.
