Geometric quantum computation and multi-qubit entanglement with superconducting charge qubits inside a cavity

We analyze a new scheme for quantum information processing, with superconducting charge qubits coupled through a cavity mode, in which quantum manipulations are insensitive to the state of the cavity. We illustrate how to physically implement universal quantum computation as well as multi-qubit entanglement based on unconventional geometric phase shifts in this scalable solid-state system. Some quantum error-correcting codes can also be easily constructed using the same technique. In view of the gate dependence on just global geometric features and the insensitivity to the state of cavity modes, the proposed quantum operations may result in high-fidelity quantum information processing.

Theoretical understanding of the quasiparticle dispersion in bilayer high-$T_{c}$ superconductors

The renormalization of quasiparticle (QP) dispersion in bilayer high-$T_{c}$ cuprates is investigated theoretically by examining respectively the interactions of the QP with spin fluctuations (SF) and phonons. It is illustrated that both interactions are able to give rise to a kink in the dispersion around the antinodes (near $(π,0)$). However, remarkable differences between the two cases are found for the peak/dip/hump structure in the lineshape, the QP weight, and the interlayer coupling effect on the kink, which are suggested to serve as a discriminance to single out the dominant interaction in the superconducting state. A comparison to recent photoemission experiments shows clearly that the coupling to the spin resonance is dominant for the QP around antinodes in bilayer systems.

Two dimensional scaling of resistance in flux flow region in $Tl_2Ba_2CaCu_2O_8$ thin films

The resistance of $Tl_2Ba_2CaCu_2O_8$ thin films has been measured when the angle between the applied fields and $ab$-plane of the film is changed continuously at various temperatures. Under various magnetic fields, the resistance can be well scaled in terms of the c-axis component of the applied fields at the same temperature in the whole angle range. Meanwhile, we show that the measurement of resistance in this way is a complementary method to determine the growth orientation of the anisotropic high-$T_c$ superconductors.

Holonomic Quantum Computation Using Rf-SQUIDs Coupled Through A Microwave Cavity

We propose a new scheme to realize holonomic quantum computation with rf-SQUID qubits in a microwave cavity. In this scheme associated with the non-Abelian holonomies, the single-qubit gates and a two-qubit control-Phase gate as well as a control-NOT gate can be easily constructed by tuning adiabatically the Rabi frequencies of classical microwave pulses coupled to the SQUIDs. The fidelity of these gates is estimated to be possibly higher than 90 % with the current technology.

The role of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in the charge ordered La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<=x<=0.87) manganites

Based on the magnetoresistance, magnetization, ultrasound, and crystallographic data, we studied the role of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in the charge ordered (CO) state for La1-xCaxMnO3. We found that, with increasing the fraction of Q3 mode of Jahn-Teller distortion and decreasing that of Q2 mode in the CO state, the magnetic structure evolves from CE-type to C-type and the orbital ordering changes from 3d(x2-r2)/3d(y2-r2)-type to 3d(x2-z2)-type, with the strength of ferromagnetism and the phase separation tendency being suppressed. At the same time, the stability of the CO state and the cooperative Jahn-Teller lattice distortion increase. These effects imply that the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect with different vibration modes is the key ingredient in understanding the essential physics of the CO state.

Spin resonance peak in Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O superconductors: A probe of the pairing symmetry

Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in layered Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O compound, we investigate theoretically the spin dynamics in the superconducting state with three possible $p_{x}+ip_{y}$-, $d+id'$-, and $f$-wave pairing symmetries in two-dimensional triangular lattices. We find that a spin resonance peak, which is elaborated to have a close relevance to the relative phase of the gap function and the geometry of the Fermi surface, appears in both in-plane and out-of-plane components of the spin susceptibility $χ$ for the spin-singlet $d+id'$-wave pairing, while only in the out-of-plane(in-plane) component of $χ$ for the spin-triplet $p_{x}+ip_{y}$-wave ($f$-wave) pairing. Because the pairing symmetry in this compound is still hotly debated at present, this distinct feature may be used to probe or determine it unambiguously with future neutron scattering experiments.

Vortex State in Na_xCoO_2.yH_2O: p_x\pm ip_y-wave versus d_{x^2-y^2}\pm id_{xy}-wave Pairing

Based on an effective Hamiltonian specified in the triangular lattice with possible $p_x\pm ip_y$- or $d_{x^2-y^2}\pm id_{xy}$-wave pairing, which has close relevance to the newly discovered Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_2$$\cdot y$H$_2$O, the electronic structure of the vortex state is studied by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. It is found that $p_x\pm ip_y$-wave is favored for the electron doping as the hopping integral $t<0$. The lowest-lying vortex bound states are found to have respectively zero and positive energies for $p_x\pm ip_y$- and $d_{x^2-y^2}\pm id_{xy}$-wave superconductors, whose vortex structures exhibit the intriguing six-fold symmetry. In the presence of strong on-site repulsion, the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic orders are induced around the vortex cores for the former and the latter, respectively, both of which cause the splitting of the LDOS peaks due to the lifting of spin degeneracy. STM and NMR measurements are able to probe the new features of vortex states uncovered in this work.

Nuclear Spin Relaxation Rate of Disordered $p_x+ip_y$-wave Superconductors

Based on an effective Hamiltonian with the binary alloy disorder model defined in the triangular lattice, the impurity scattering effects on the density of states and especially on the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ of $p_x+ip_y$-wave superconductors are studied by solving numerically the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. In the clean limit, the coherence peak of $1/T_1$ is observed as expected. More intriguingly, for strong scattering potential, the temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ exhibits the two different power law behaviors near $T_{\text{c}}$ and at low temperatures, respectively, which is in good agreement with the nuclear quadrupolar resonance measurement.

Testing Bell's inequality and measuring the entanglement using superconducting nanocircuits

An experimental scheme is proposed to test Bell's inequality by using superconducting nanocircuits. In this scheme, quantum entanglement of a pair of charge qubits separated in a sufficient long distance may be created by cavity quantum electrodynamic techniques; the population of qubits is experimentally measurable by dc currents through the probe junctions, and one measured outcome may be recorded for every experiment. Therefore, both locality and detection efficiency loopholes should be closed in the same experiment. We also propose a useful method to measure the amount of entanglement based on the concurrence between Josephson qubits. The measurable variables for Bell's inequality as well as the entanglement are expressed in terms of a useful phase-space Q function.

Quantum information processing using Josephson junctions coupled through cavities

Josephson junctions have been shown to be a promising solid-state system for implementation of quantum computation. The significant two-qubit gates are generally realized by the capacitive coupling between the nearest neighbour qubits. We propose an effective Hamiltonian to describe charge qubits coupled through the cavity. We find that nontrivial two-qubit gates may be achieved by this coupling. The ability to interconvert localized charge qubits and flying qubits in the proposed scheme implies that quantum network can be constructed using this large scalable solid-state system.

Unconventional geometric quantum computation

We propose a new class of unconventional geometric gates involving nonzero dynamic phases, and elucidate that geometric quantum computation can be implemented by using these gates. Comparing with the conventional geometric gate operation, in which the dynamic phase shift must be removed or avoided, the gates proposed here may be operated more simply. We illustrate in detail that unconventional nontrivial two-qubit geometric gates with built-in fault tolerant geometric features can be implemented in real physical systems.

Impurity and interface bound states in $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ and $p_x+ip_y$ superconductors

Motivated by recent discoveries of novel superconductors such as Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot y$H$_2$O and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we analysize features of quasi-particle scattering due to impurities and interfaces for possible gapful $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ and $p_x+ip_y$ Cooper pairing. A bound state appears near a local impurity, and a band of bound states form near an interface. We obtained analytically the bound state energy, and calculated the space and energy dependent local density of states resolvable by high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy. For comparison we also sketch results of impurity and surface states if the pairing is nodal p- or d-wave.

Universal quantum gates based on both geometric and dynamic phases in quantum dots

A large-scalable quantum computer model, whose qubits are represented by the subspace subtended by the ground state and the single exciton state on semiconductor quantum dots, is proposed. A universal set of quantum gates in this system may be achieved by a mixed approach, composed of dynamic evolution and nonadibatic geometric phase.

Universal quantum gates based on a pair of orthogonal cyclic states: Application to NMR systems

We propose an experimentally feasible scheme to achieve quantum computation based on a pair of orthogonal cyclic states. In this scheme, quantum gates can be implemented based on the total phase accumulated in cyclic evolutions. In particular, geometric quantum computation may be achieved by eliminating the dynamic phase accumulated in the whole evolution. Therefore, both dynamic and geometric operations for quantum computation are workable in the present theory. Physical implementation of this set of gates is designed for NMR systems. Also interestingly, we show that a set of universal geometric quantum gates in NMR systems may be realized in one cycle by simply choosing specific parameters of the external rotating magnetic fields. In addition, we demonstrate explicitly a multiloop method to remove the dynamic phase in geometric quantum gates. Our results may provide useful information for the experimental implementation of quantum logical gates.

Temperature dependence of Vortex Charges in High Temperature Superconductors

Using a model Hamiltonian with d-wave superconductivity and competing antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions, the temperature (T) dependence of the vortex charge in high T_c superconductors is investigated by numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The strength of the induced AF order inside the vortex core is T dependent. The vortex charge could be negative when the AF order with sufficient strength is present at low temperatures. At higher temperatures, the AF order may be completely suppressed and the vortex charge becomes positive. A first order like transition in the T dependent vortex charge is seen near the critical temperature T_{AF}. For underdoped sample, the spatial profiles of the induced spin-density wave and charge-density wave orders could have stripe like structures at T < T_s, and change to two-dimensional isotropic ones at T > T_s. As a result, a vortex charge discontinuity occurs at T_s.

Jahn-Teller effect and stability of the charge-ordered state in La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<x<0.9) manganites

The longitudinal ultrasonic sound velocity and attenuation, the resistivity, and lattice parameters were studied as a function of temperature from 30 K to 300 K in La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<x<0.9). For all the samples, a dramatic stiffening of the sound velocity below the charge ordering transition temperature TCO was directly driven by distinct changes of the lattice parameters due to the formation of long range ordering of Jahn-Teller distorted MnO6 octahedra. The relative change of the sound velocity (DeltaV/V) below TCO depends on the Ca concentration x and reaches the maximum at x=0.75, implying that the effective strength of electron-lattice interaction with the Jahn-Teller distortion is the strongest at x=0.75 and hence the charge ordered state is mostly stabilized near x=0.75 and insensitive to the application of a magnetic field, which is supported by the charge transport properties under high magnetic fields up to 14T.

Geometric phase shift in quantum computation using superconducting nanocircuits: nonadiabatic effects

The nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation may be achieved using coupled low-capacitance Josephson juctions. We show that the nonadiabtic effects as well as the adiabatic condition are very important for these systems. Moreover, we find that it may be hard to detect the adiabatic Berry's phase in this kind of superconducting nanocircuits; but the nonadiabatic phase may be measurable with current techniques. Our results may provide useful information for the implementation of geometric quantum computation.

Vortex Charges in High Temperature Superconductors

Based on an effective model Hamiltonian with competing antiferromagnetic (AF) and d-wave superconductivity (DSC) interactions, the vortex charge in high T_c superconductors is investigated by solving self-consistently the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We found that the vortex charge is always negative when a sufficient strength of AF order is induced inside the vortex core, otherwise, the vortex charge is positive. By tuning the on-site Coulomb repulsion U or the doping parameter $δ$, a transition between the positive and negative vortex charges may occur. The vortex charge at optimal doping has also been studied as a function of magnetic field. Recent NMR and Hall effect experiments may be understood in terms of the present results. New imaging experiments should be able to probe the vortex charge directly.
