Conductance of a quantum point contact in the presence of spin-orbit interaction

A recursive Green's function technique is developed to calculate the spin-dependent conductance in mesoscopic structures. Using this technique, we study the spin-dependent electronic transport of quantum point contacts in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We observed that some oscillations in the `quantized' conductance are induced by the spin-orbit interaction, and indicated that the oscillations may stem from the spin-orbit coupling associated multiple reflections. It is also indicated that the 0.7 structure of the conductance observed in mesoscopic experiments would not stem from the spin-orbit interaction.

Charge pumping in a quantum wire driven by a series of local time-periodic potentials

We develop a method to calculate electronic transport properties through a mesoscopic scattering region in the presence of a series of time-periodic potentials. Using the method, the quantum charge pumping driven by time-periodic potentials is studied. Jumps in the pumped current are observed at the peak positions of the Wigner delay time. Our main results in both the weak pumping and strong pumping regimes are consistent with experimental results. More interestingly, we also observed the nonzero pumping at the phase difference phi=0 and addressed its relevance to the experimental result.

Conductance of a Quantum Point Contact in the presence of a Scanning Probe Microscope Tip

Using the recursive Green's function technique, we study the coherent electron conductance of a quantum point contact in the presence of a scanning probe microscope tip. Images of the coherent fringe inside a quantum point contact for different widths are obtained. It is found that the conductance of a specific channel is reduced while other channels are not affected as long as the tip is located at the positions correspending to that channel. Moreover, the coherent fringe is smoothed out by increasing the temperature or the voltage across the device. Our results are consistent with the experiments reported by Topinka et al.[Science 289, 2323 (2000)].

Implementation of universal quantum gates based on nonadiabatic geometric phases

We propose an experimentally feasible scheme to achieve quantum computation based on nonadiabatic geometric phase shifts, in which a cyclic geometric phase is used to realize a set of universal quantum gates. Physical implementation of this set of gates is designed for Josephson junctions and for NMR systems. Interestingly, we find that the nonadiabatic phase shift may be independent of the operation time under appropriate controllable conditions. A remarkable feature of the present nonadiabatic geometric gates is that there is no intrinsic limitation on the operation time, unlike adiabatic geometric gates. Besides fundamental interest, our results may simplify the implementation of geometric quantum computation based on solid state systems, where the decoherence time may be very short.

Impurity state in the vortex core of d-wave superconductors: Anderson impurity model versus unitary impurity model

Using an extended Anderson/Kondo impurity model to describe the magnetic moments around an impurity doped in high-$T_{\text{c}}$ d-wave cuprates and in the framework of the slave-boson meanfield approach, we study numerically the impurity state in the vortex core by exact diagonalization of the well-established Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The low-energy impurity state is found to be good agreement with scanning tunnelingmicroscopy observation. After pinning a vortex on the impurity site, we compare the unitary impurity model with the extended Anderson impurity model by examining the effect of the magnetic field on the impurity state. We find that the impurity resonance in the unitary impurity model is strongly suppressed by the vortex; while it is insensitive to the field in the extended Anderson impurity model.

Synchronous phase clustering in a network of neurons with spatially decaying excitatory coupling

Synchronization is studied in a spatially-distributed network of weekly-coupled, excitatory neurons of Hodgkin-Huxley type. All neurons are coupled to each other synaptically with a fixed time delay and a coupling strength inversely proportional to the distance between two neurons. We found that a robust, noise-resistant phase clustering state occurred regardless of the initial phase distribution. This has not been shown in previous studies where similar clustering states were found only when the coupling was inhibitory. The spatial distribution of neurons in each synchronous cluster is determined by the spatial distribution of the coupling strength. Phase-interaction properties of the model neurons in the network are used to explain why can such a clustering state be robust.

Nonadiabatic noncyclic geometric phase and ensemble average spectrum of conductance in disordered mesoscopic rings with spin-orbit coupling

We generalize Yang's theory from the U(1) gauge field to the non-Abelian $U(1)\times SU(2)_{spin}$ gauge field. Based on this generalization and taking into account the geometric Pancharatnam phase as well as an effective Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phase in nonadiabatic noncyclic transport, we calculate the ensemble average Fourier spectrum of the conductance in disordered mesoscopic rings connected to two leads. Our theory can explain the experimental results reported by Morpurgo {\sl et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 1050 (1998)] satisfactorily. In particular, we clarify that the experimentally observed splitting, as well as some structure on the sides of the main peak in the ensemble average Fourier spectrum, stem from the nonadiabatic noncyclic Pancharatnam phase and the effective AB phase, both being dependent on spin-orbit coupling.

Symmetry Does Not Allow Canting of Spins in La_{1.4}Sr_{1.6}Mn_2O_7

We analyze the symmetry of all possible magnetic structures of bilayered manganites La_{2-2x}Sr_{1+2x}Mn_2O_7 with doping 0.3 <= x < 0.5 and formulate a corresponding Landau theory of the phase transitions involved. It is shown that canting of spins is not allowed at x=0.3 though is at x=0.4. The observed magnetic reflections from the sample with x=0.3 may be described as arising from two spatially distributed phases with close transition temperatures but different easy axes and ranges of stability. Experimental results are revisited on the basis of the theoretical findings.

Nonadiabatic noncyclic geometric phase of a spin-1/2 particle subject to an arbitrary magnetic field

We derive a formula of the nonadiabatic noncyclic Pancharatnam phase for a quantum spin-1/2 particle subject to an arbitrary magnetic field. The formula is applied to three specific kinds of magneic fields. (i) For an orientated magnetic field, the Pancharatnam phase is derived exactly. (ii) For a rotating magnetic field, the evolution equation is solved analytically. The Aharonov-Anandan phase is obtained exactly and the Pancharatnam phase is computed numerically. (iii) We propose a kind of topological transition in one-dimensional mesoscopic ring subject to an in-plane magnetic field, and then address the nonadiabatic noncyclic effect on this phenomenon.

Coherence Resonance and Noise-Induced Synchronization in Globally Coupled Hodgkin-Huxley Neurons

The coherence resonance (CR) of globally coupled Hodgkin-Huxley neurons is studied. When the neurons are set in the subthreshold regime near the firing threshold, the additive noise induces limit cycles. The coherence of the system is optimized by the noise. A bell-shaped curve is found for the peak height of power spectra of the spike train, being significantly different from a monotonic behavior for the single neuron. The coupling of the network can enhance CR in two different ways. In particular, when the coupling is strong enough, the synchronization of the system is induced and optimized by the noise. This synchronization leads to a high and wide plateau in the local measure of coherence curve. The local-noise-induced limit cycle can evolve to a refined spatiotemporal order through the dynamical optimization among the autonomous oscillation of an individual neuron, the coupling of the network, and the local noise.

Dynamical Mean-Field Solution for a Model of Metal-Insulator Transitions in Moderately Doped Manganites

We propose that a specific spatial configuration of lattice sites that energetically favor {\it 3+} or {\it 4+} Mn ions in moderately doped manganites constitutes approximately a spatially random two-energy-level system. Such an effect results in a mechanism of metal-insulator transitions that appears to be different from both the Anderson transition and the Mott-Hubbard transition. Correspondingly, a disordered Kondo lattice model is put forward, whose dynamical mean-field solution agrees reasonably with experiments.

Symmetry Origin of the Phase Transitions and Phase Separation in Manganites at Low Doping

We analyze the symmetry changes of the paramagnetic to the A-type antiferromagnetic and to the ferromagnetic phase transitions in undoped and moderately doped LaMnO$_3$, respectively. We show that in the orthorhombic-distorted perovskite manganites the phase separation at low doping is associated with the noncollinear nature of the magnetic orders permitted by symmetry. A simple model for the competition between the two phase transitions is put forward within the framework of Landau theory of phase transitions.

Landau Theory of the Phase Transitions in Half Doped Manganites: Interplay of Magnetic, Charge and Structural Orders

The order parameters of the magnetic, charge and structural orders at half-doped manganites are identified. A corresponding Landau theory of the phase transitions is formulated. Many structural and thermodynamical behaviors are accounted for and clarified within the framework. In particular, the theory provides a unified picture for the scenario of the phase transitions and their nature with respect to the variation of the tolerance factor of the manganites. It also accounts for the origin of the incommensurate nature of the orbital order and its subsequently accompanying antiferromagnetic order.

Sub-Dominant Pairing Channels in Unconventional Superconductors: Ginzburg-Landau Theory

A Ginzburg-Landau theory is developed for unconventional superconductors with the three relevant singlet pairing channels. Various consequences of the sub-dominant channels (i.e., s- and d_{xy}-channels) are examined in detail. (1) In the case of a d_{x^2-y^2}+is-wave superconductor, The structure of a single vortex above and below T_{DS} is four-fold and two-fold symmetric, respectively. (2) In the case of a d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}-wave superconductor, there is also a second order zero-field phase transition from the pure d_{x^2-y^2}-phase to the Time-reversal-symmetry-breaking d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}-wave phase at the temperature T_{DD'}. But the subdominant phase can (not) be induced by vortices above T_{DD'}. Below the time-reversal- symmetry-breaking transition, the sub-dominant phase in the mixed state is nontrivial: it survives at low fields, but may disappear above a field (increasing with decreasing temperature) presumably via a first-order transition. (3)By including the strong coupling effects, a time-reversal-symmetry -breaking coupling term between the d_{x^2-y^2}- and d_{xy}-waves is found to have significant effects on the low temperature behavior of d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy} superconductors. In a magnetic field, a d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy} state is always established, but the field-dependence of d_{xy}-amplitude above T_{DD'} is different from that below T_{DD'}. Above but not very close to T_{DD'}, the induced minimum gap Delta_0 proportional to B/(T-T_{DD'}).

Zeeman Coupling and Abnormal Thermal Conductivities in BSCCO Superconductors

Using the path-integral formulation we derive microscopically a Ginzburg-Landau free energy with a Zeeman coupling between the magnetic field and the orbital angular momentum of the Cooper pairs in a superconductor with singlet pairing in the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$- and the sub-dominant $d_{xy}$- channels. The Zeeman coupling induces a time-reversal-symmetry-breaking pairing state. Based on careful examinations of the energy gain due to the Zeeman coupling, the energy lost due to the kinetic energy of the excess superfluid, and the Doppler energy shift for quasi-particle excitations, we present a coherent interpretation for the puzzling and conflicting thermal conductivites observed at above 5K (K. Krishana, {\it et al}, Science {\bf 277}, 83(1997)) and at sub-Kelvins (H. Aubin, {\it et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82}, 624 (1999)).

Linear spin and orbital wave theory for undoped manganites

We present a linear spin and orbital wave theory to account for the spin and orbital orderings observed experimentally in undoped manganite. It is found that the anisotropy of the magnetic structure is closely related to the orbital ordering, and the Jahn-Teller effect stabilizes the orbital ordering. The phase diagram and the low energy excitation spectra for both spin and orbital orderings are obtained. The calculated critical temperatures can be quantitatively comparable to the experimental data.

Vortex dynamics of a $d+is$-wave superconductor

The vortex dynamics of a d+is-wave superconductor is studied numerically by simulating the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations. The critical fields, the free flux flow, and the flux flow in the presence of twin-boundaries are discussed. The relaxation rate of the order parameter turns out to play an important role in the flux flow. We also address briefly the intrinsic Hall effect in d- and d+is-wave superconductors.

Unified theory of phase separation and charge ordering in doped manganite perovskites

A unified theory is developed to explain various types of electronic collective behaviors in doped manganites R$_{1-x}$X$_x$MnO$_3$ (R = La, Pr,Nd etc. and X = Ca, Sr, Ba etc.). Starting from a realistic electronic model, we derive an effective Hamiltonianis by ultilizing the projection perturbation techniques and develop a spin-charge-orbital coherent state theory, in which the Jahn-Teller effect and the orbital degeneracy of e$_g$ electrons in Mn ions are taken into account. Physically, the experimentally observed charge ordering state and electronic phase separation are two macroscopic quantum phenomena with opposite physical mechanisms, and their physical origins are elucidated in this theory. Interplay of the Jahn-Teller effect, the lattice distortion as well as the double exchange mechanism leads to different magnetic structures and to different charge ordering patterns and phase separation.
