Tunable interfaces for realizing universal quantum computation with topological qubits

We propose to implement tunable interfaces for realizing universal quantum computation with topological qubits. One interface is between the topological and superconducting qubits, which can realize arbitrary single-qubit gate on the topological qubit. When two qubits are involved, the interface between the topological qubits and a microwave cavity can induce a nontrivial two-qubit gate, which can not be constructed based on braiding operations. The two interfaces, being tunable via an external magnetic flux, may serve as the building blocks towards universal quantum computation with topological qubits.

Single-photon transport in a one dimentional waveguide coupling to a hybrid atom-optomechanical system

We explore theoretically the single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide that is coupled to a hybrid atom-optomechanical system in a strong optomechanical coupling regime. Using a full quantum real-space approach, transmission and reflection coefficients of the propagating single-photon in the waveguide are ob- tained. The influences of atom-cavity detuning and the dissipation of atom on the transport are also studied. Intriguingly, the obtained spectral features can reveal the strong light-matter interaction in this hybrid system.

Revealing a topological connection between stabilities of Fermi surfaces and topological insulators/superconductors

A topology-intrinsic connection between the stabilities of Fermi surfaces (FSs) and topological insulators/superconductors (TIs/TSCs) is revealed. In particular, a one-to-one relation between the topological types of FSs and TIs/TSCs is rigorously derived; combining it with a well-established topological theory of FSs, we produce a complete table illustrating precisely topological types of all TIs/TSCs, while a valid part of it was postulated before. Moreover, we propose and prove a general index theorem that relates the topological charge of FSs on the natural boundary of a strong TI/TSC to its bulk topological number. Implications of the general index theorem on the boundary quasi-particles are also addressed.

Topological Classification and Stability of Fermi Surfaces

In the framework of the Cartan classification of Hamiltonians, a kind of topological classification of Fermi surfaces is established in terms of topological charges. The topological charge of a Fermi surface depends on its codimension and the class to which its Hamiltonian belongs. It is revealed that six types of topological charges exist, and they form two groups with respect to the chiral symmetry, with each group consisting of one original charge and two descendants. It is these nontrivial topological charges which lead to the robust topological protection of the corresponding Fermi surfaces against perturbations that preserve discrete symmetries.

Superfluid and magnetic states of an ultracold Bose gas with synthetic three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling in an optical lattice

We study ultracold bosonic atoms with the synthetic three-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a cubic optical lattice. In the superfluidity phase, the lowest energy band exhibits one, two or four pairs of degenerate single-particle ground states depending on the SO-coupling strengths, which can give rise to the condensate states with spin-stripes for the weak atomic interactions. In the deep Mott-insulator regime, the effective spin Hamiltonian of the system combines three-dimensional Heisenberg exchange interactions, anisotropy interactions and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we numerically demonstrate that the resulting Hamiltonian with an additional Zeeman field has a rich phase diagram with spiral, stripe, vortex crystal, and especially Skyrmion crystal spin-textures in each xy-plane layer. The obtained Skyrmion crystals can be tunable with square and hexagonal symmetries in a columnar manner along the z axis, and moreover are stable against the inter-layer spin-spin interactions in a large parameter region.

Controlling Fusion of Majorana Fermions in one-dimensional systems by Zeeman Field

We propose to realize Majorana fermions (MFs) on an edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator in the proximity with s-wave superconductors and in the presence of transverse exchange field h. It is shown that there appear a pair of MFs localized at two junctions and that a reverse in direction of h can lead to permutation of two MFs. With decreasing h, the MF states can either be fused or form one Dirac fermion on the π-junctions, exhibiting a topological phase transition. This characteristic can be used to detect physical states of MFs when they are transformed into Dirac fermions localized on the π-junction. A condition of decoupling two MFs is also given.

All-electrically reading out and initializing topological qubits with quantum dots

We analyze the reading and initialization of a topological qubit encoded by Majorana fermions in one-dimensional semiconducting nanowires, weakly coupled to a single level quantum dot (QD). It is shown that when the Majorana fermions are fused by tuning gate voltage, the topological qubit can be read out directly through the occupation of the QD in an energy window. The initialization of the qubit can also be realized via adjusting the gate voltage on the QD, with the total fermion parity conserved. As a result, both reading and initialization processes can be achieved in an all-electrical way.

The emergence of Hopf term and the marginality of Dirac model

The subtle relation of the marginality of Dirac model and the emergence of the Hopf term through a Yukawa-type interaction is revealed in this work. We show that the improvement of the marginality of Dirac mode through an infinitesimal non-relativistic term, which is irrelevant for renormalization group, is necessary to emerge the Hopf term. It is found that the appearance of the Hopf term is always accompanied with chiral boundary modes, and the sign of the coupling constant of the infinitesimal non-relativistic term decides their chirality. A lattice Dirac model is also constructed to realize the Hopf term.

Topological Bose-Mott Insulators in a One-Dimensional Optical Superlattice

We study topological properties of the Bose-Hubbard model with repulsive interactions in a one-dimensional optical superlattice. We find that the Mott insulator states of the single-component (two-component) Bose-Hubbard model under fractional fillings are topological insulators characterized by a nonzero charge (or spin) Chern number with nontrivial edge states. For ultracold atomic experiments, we show that the topological Chern number can be detected through measuring the density profiles of the bosonic atoms in a harmonic trap.

Particle number fractionalization of a one-dimensional atomic Fermi gas with synthetic spin-orbit coupling

We propose an experimental scheme to simulate the fractionalization of particle number by using a one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled ultracold fermionic gas. The wanted spin-orbit coupling, a kink-like potential, and a conjugation-symmetry-breaking mass term are properly constructed by laser-atom interactions, leading to an effective low-energy relativistic Dirac Hamiltonian with a topologically nontrivial background field. The designed system supports a localized soliton excitation with a fractional particle number that is generally irrational and experimentally tunable, providing a direct realization of the celebrated generalized-Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. In addition, we elaborate on how to detect the induced soliton mode with the FPN in the system.

Revealing Majorana Fermion states in a superfluid of cold atoms subject to a harmonic potential

We here explore Majorana Fermion states in an s-wave superfluid of cold atoms in the presence of spin-orbital coupling and an additional harmonic potential. The superfluid boundary is induced by a harmonic trap. Two locally separated Majorana Fermion states are revealed numerically based on the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The local density of states are calculated, through which the signatures of Majorana excitations may be indicated experimentally.

Probing the superconducting pairing symmetry from spin excitations in BiS$_2$ based superconductors

Starting from a two-orbital model and based on the random phase approximation, spin excitations in the superconducting state of the newly discovered BiS$_2$ superconductors with three possible pairing symmetries are studied theoretically. We show that spin response is uniquely determined by the pairing symmetry. Possible spin resonance excitations might occur for the d-wave symmetry at an incommensurate momentum about $(0.7π,0.7π)$. For the p-wave symmetry the transverse spin excitation near $(0,0)$ is enhanced. For the s-wave pairing symmetry there is no spin resonance signature. These distinct features may be used for probing or determining the pairing symmetry in this newly discovered compound.

Probing Quantitatively Two-electron Entanglement with a Spintronic Quantum Eraser

We design an ingenious spintronic quantum eraser to quantitatively probe the two-electron entanglement. It is shown that the concurrence of two spin-entangled electrons is directly given by the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation amplitude of the Fano factor, a measurable current-current correlation, making it rather promising to experimentally quantify the two-electron entanglement. The singlet and triplet entangled states are distinguished by the opposite signs in the Fano factor. Since the main building blocks in the designed setup, an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a spin filter, have already been implemented, our proposal is particularly pertinent to experiments.

Exact analysis on the singularity of the joint density of states and its relationship to the quasiparticle interference

Singularities of the joint density of states (JDOS) and Fourier-transformed local density of states (FT-LDOS) correspond to the hot spots in quasiparticle interference patterns. In this paper the singularity of JDOS is analyzed exactly, with three types of singularities being classified. In particular, the third type of singularities are found exactly to be envelopes of the contours of constant energy. Remarkably, we show that JDOS and FT-LDOS have the same singular points. Approaching to the singular points, both quantities diverge complementarily in an inverse-square-root manner if the joint curvature is nonzero. The relative magnitude of divergence is governed by the joint curvature as well as the product of the quasiparticle velocities. If the joint curvature of certain singularity is zero, the divergence has a higher order than -1/2.

Generalized joint density of states and its application to exploring the pairing symmetry of superconductors

We introduce a generalized joint density of states (GJDOS), which incorporates the coherent factor into the JDOS, to study quasiparticle interference (QPI) in superconductors. The intimate relation between the Fourier-transformed local density of states and GJDOS is revealed: they corre- spond respectively to the real and imaginary parts of a generalized impurity-response function, and particularly share the same angular factors and singular boundaries, as seen from our approximate analytic results for d-wave superconductors. Remarkably, our numerical GJDOS analysis agrees well with the QPI patten of d-wave cuprates and s\pm-wave iron-based superconductors. Moreover, we illustrate that the present GJDOS scenario can uncover the sign features of the superconducting gap and thus can be used to explore the possible pairing symmetry of the KxFe2-ySe2 superconductors.

Pairing Symmetry and Spin Excitations of Iron Selenide Superconductors

We propose an effective single-band model for the newly discovered iron selenide superconductors A$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ (A=Tl,K,Rb,Cs). Based on this minimum model and the random phase approximation, the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing symmetry is revealed theoretically, which may be understood in the framework of Fermi surface topology. A common origin of superconductivity is elucidated for this compound and other high-T$_c$ materials. The spin excitations at $(π,π/2)$ in superconducting states are observed, in good agreement with the neutron scattering experiments. The spin resonance is indicated to show up only for the d-wave pairing, which provides an additional indication for the d-wave pairing symmetry in this family of superconductors.

Macroscopic Klein Tunneling in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

We propose an experimental scheme to detect macroscopic Klein tunneling with spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We show that a nonlinear Dirac equation with tunable parameters can be realized with such BECs. %in a simple configuration to generate the artificial spin-orbit coupling. Through numerical calculations, we demonstrate that macroscopic Klein tunneling can be clearly detected under realistic conditions. Macroscopic quantum coherence in such relativistic tunneling is clarified and a BEC with a negative energy is shown to be able to transmit transparently through a wide Gaussian potential barrier.

Josephson dynamics of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential

We investigate the quantum dynamics of an experimentally realized spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential. The spin-orbit coupling can significantly enhance the atomic inter-well tunneling. We find the coexistence of internal and external Josephson effects in the system, which are moreover inherently coupled in a complicated form even in the absence of interatomic interactions. Moreover, we show that the spin-dependent tunneling between two wells can induce a net atomic spin current referred as spin Josephson effects. Such novel spin Josephson effects can be observable for realistically experimental conditions.
