Unconventional Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in spin-orbit coupled condensates: exact results

We find that a model Hamiltonian of s-wave superconductors in the presence of spin-orbit interactions and a Zeeman field is exactly solvable. Most intriguingly, based on the exact solutions, an unconventional type of Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) ground state is rigorously revealed, in which the center-of-mass momentum of the fermion pair is proportional to the Zeeman field. We also elaborate on the drifting effect of the Zeeman field on the spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate.

A minimum single-band model for low-energy excitations in superconducting K$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$

We propose a minimum single-band model for the newly discovered iron-based superconducting K$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$. Our model is found to be numerically consistent with the five-orbital model at low energies. Based on our model and the random phase approximation, we study the spin fluctuation and the pairing symmetry of superconducting gap function. The $(π/2,π/2)$ spin excitation and the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing symmetry are revealed. All of the results can well be understood in terms of the interplay between the Fermi surface topology and the local spin interaction, providing a sound picture to explain why the superconducting transition temperature is as high as to be comparable to those in pnictides and some cuprates. A common origin of superconductivity is elucidated for this compound and other high-T$_c$ materials.

Consistent picture for the electronic structure around a vortex core in iron-based superconductors

Based on a two-orbital model and taking into account the presence of the impurity, we studied theoretically the electronic structure in the vortex core of the iron-Pnictide superconducting materials. The vortex is pinned when the impurity is close to the vortex core. The bound states shows up for the unpinned vortex and are wiped out by a impurity. Our results are in good agreement with recent experiments and present a consistent explanation for the different electronic structure of vortex core revealed by experiments on different materials.

Fast ground-state cooling of mechanical resonator with time-dependent optical cavities

We propose a feasible scheme to cool down a mechanical resonator (MR) in a three-mirror cavity optomechanical system with controllable external optical drives. Under the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation, the whole dynamics of the mechanical resonator and cavities is reduced to that of a time-dependent harmonic oscillator, whose effective frequency can be controlled through the optical driving fields. The fast cooling of the MR can be realized by controlling the amplitude of the optical drives. Significantly, we further show that the ground-state cooling may be achieved via the three-mirror cavity optomechanical system without the resolved sideband condition.

Joint density of states and its relationship with quasiparticle interference pattern of d-wave superconductors

We present analytic analyses for the joint density of states (JDOS) and the elastic scattering susceptibility (ESS) for d-wave superconductors under the linear dispersion approximation. The profile of the JDOS, determined by the curves on which the JDOS diverges, is found to be the envelope function related to the contour of constant energy of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles. We derive the explicit form of the envelope functions. The intrinsic relationship of the JDOS patten and the octet model of ESS is clearly revealed. It is also found that apexes of the envelope function coincide with the octet vectors when the Dirac-cone anisotropy is strong, which is relevant to the d-wave cuprates.

Exact solutions for a type of electron pairing model with spin-orbit interactions and Zeeman coupling

A type of electron pairing model with spin-orbit interactions or Zeeman coupling is solved exactly in the framework of Richardson ansatz. Based on the exact solutions for the case with spin-orbit interactions, it is shown rigorously that the pairing order parameter has always the $p+ip$-wave symmetry regardless of the strength of pairing interaction, justifying an important conclusion obtained by the mean field theory. Analytical results are derived for two simple systems with respectively spin-orbit interactions and Zeeman coupling.

Single qubit quantum secret sharing with improved security

Analyzing carefully an experimentally feasible non-entangled single qubit quantum secret sharing protocol and its modified version [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 230505 (2005); ibid. 98, 028902 (2007)], it is found that both versions are insecure against coherent attacks though the original idea is so remarkable. To overcome this fatal flaw, here we propose a protocol with a distinct security checking strategy, which still involves single qubit operations only, making it possible to achieve better security of quantum secret sharing with current technology.

Probing non-Abelian statistics of Majorana fermions in ultracold atomic superfluid

We propose an experiment to directly probe the non-Abelian statistics of Majorana fermions by braiding them in an s-wave superfluid of ultracold atoms. We show different orders of braiding operations give orthogonal output states that can be distinguished through Raman spectroscopy. Realization of Majorana bound states in an s-wave superfluid requires strong spin-orbital coupling and a controllable Zeeman field in the perpendicular direction. We present a simple laser configuration to generate the artificial spin-orbital coupling and the required Zeeman field in the dark state subspace.

Simulation of the spin-boson model with superconducting phase qubit coupled to a transmission line

Based on the rapid experimental developments of circuit QED, we propose a feasible scheme to simulate a spin-boson model with the superconducting circuits, which can be used to detect quantum Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase transition. We design the spin-boson model by using a superconducting phase qubit coupled with a semi-infinite transmission line, which is regarded as bosonic reservoir with a continuum spectrum. By tuning the bias current or the coupling capacitance, the quantum KT transition can be directly detected through tomography measurement on the states of the phase qubit. We also estimate the experimental parameters using numerical renormalization group method.

Joint quantum nondemolition measurements of qubits: beyond the mean-field theory

We propose an approach to nondestructively detect $N$ qubits by measuring the transmissions of a dispersively-coupled cavity. By taking into account all the cavity-qubits quantum correlations (i.e., beyond the usual coarse-grained/mean-field approximations), it is revealed that for an unknown normalized $N$-qubit state $|ψ_N>=\sum_{k=0}^{2^N-1}β_k|k>_N$, each detected peak in the cavity transmitted spectra marks one of the basis states $|k>_N$ and the relative height of such a peak is related to the corresponding superposed-probability $|β_k|^2$. Our results are able to unambiguously account for the intriguing multi-peak structures of the spectra observed in a very recent circuit-quantum-electrodynamics experiment [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 81}, 062325 (2010)] with two superconducting qubits.

Tunable one-dimensional microwave emissions from cyclic-transition three-level atoms

By strongly driving a cyclic-transition three-level artificial atom, demonstrated by such as a flux-based superconducting circuit, we show that coherent microwave signals can be excited along a coupled one-dimensional transmission line. Typically, the intensity of the generated microwave is tunable via properly adjusting the Rabi frequencies of the applied strong-driving fields or introducing a probe field with the same frequency. In practice, the system proposed here could work as an on-chip quantum device with controllable atom-photon interaction to implement a total-reflecting mirror or switch for the propagating probe field.

Entanglement charge of thermal states

Entanglement charge is an operational measure to quantify nonlocalities in ensembles consisting of bipartite quantum states. Here we generalize this nonlocality measure to single bipartite quantum states. As an example, we analyze the entanglement charges of some thermal states of two-qubit systems and show how they depend on the temperature and the system parameters in an analytical way.

Exploration of nonlocalities in ensembles consisting of bipartite quantum states

It is revealed that ensembles consisting of multipartite quantum states can exhibit different kinds of nonlocalities. An operational measure is introduced to quantify nonlocalities in ensembles consisting of bipartite quantum states. Various upper and lower bounds for the measure are estimated and the exact values for ensembles consisting of mutually orthogonal maximally entangled bipartite states are evaluated.

Orbital-transverse density-wave instabilities in iron-based superconductors

Besides the conventional spin-density-wave (SDW) state, a new kind of orbital-transverse density-wave (OTDW) state is shown to exist generally in multi-orbital systems. We demonstrate that the orbital character of Fermi surface nesting plays an important role in density responses. The relationship between antiferromagnetism and structural phase transition in LaFeAsO (1111) and BaFe$_2$As$_2$ (122) compounds of iron-based superconductors may be understood in terms of the interplay between the SDW and OTDW with a five-orbital Hamiltonian. We propose that the essential difference between 1111 and 122 compounds is crucially determined by the presence of the two-dimensional $d_{xy}$-like Fermi surface around (0,0) being only in 1111 parent compounds.

Pseudogap and Fermi-arc Evolution in the Phase-fluctuation Scenario

Pseudogap phenomena and the formation of Fermi arcs in underdoped cuprates are numerically studied in the presence of phase fluctuations that are simulated by an XY model. Most importantly the spectral function for each Monte Carlo sample is calculated directly and efficiently by the Chebyshev polynomials without having to diagonalize the fermion Hamiltonian, which enables us to handle a system large enough to achieve sufficient momentum/energy resolution. We find that the momentum dependence of the energy gap is identical to that of a pure d-wave superconductor well below the KT-transition temperature ($T_{KT}$), while displays an upturn deviation from $\cos k_x - \cos k_y$ with increasing temperature. An abrupt onset of the Fermi arcs is observed above $T_{KT}$ and the arc length exhibits a similar temperature dependence to the thermally activated vortex excitations.

Perfect Function Transfer in two- and three- dimensions without initialization

We find analytic models that can perfectly transfer, without state initializati$ or remote collaboration, arbitrary functions in two- and three-dimensional interacting bosonic and fermionic networks. We elaborate on a possible implementation of state transfer through bosonic or fermionic atoms trapped in optical lattices. A significant finding is that the state of a spin qubit can be perfectly transferred through a fermionic system. Families of Hamiltonians, both linear and nonlinear, are described which are related to the linear Boson model and that enable the perfect transfer of arbitrary functions. This includes entangled states such as decoherence-free subsystems enabling noise protection of the transferred state.

Extended JC-Dicke model for a two-component atomic BEC inside a cavity

We consider a trapped two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), where each atom with three energy-levels is coupled to an optical cavity field and an external classical optical field as well as a microwave field to form the so-called $Δ$-type configuration. After adiabatically eliminating the atomic excited state, an extended JC-Dicke model is derived under the rotating-wave approximation. The scaled ground-state energy and the phase diagram of this model Hamiltonian are investigated in the framework of mean-field approach. A new phase transition is revealed when the amplitude of microwave field changes its sign.

Entanglement monogamy and entanglement evolution in multipartite systems

We analyze the entanglement distribution and the two-qubit residual entanglement in multipartite systems. For a composite system consisting of two cavities interacting with independent reservoirs, it is revealed that the entanglement evolution is restricted by an entanglement monogamy relation derived here. Moreover, it is found that the initial cavity-cavity entanglement evolves completely to the genuine four-partite cavities-reservoirs entanglement in the time interval between the sudden death of cavity-cavity entanglement and the birth of reservoir-reservoir entanglement. In addition, we also address the relationship between the genuine block-block entanglement form and qubit-block form in the interval.
