Search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay of $^{76}$Ge with a Natural Broad Energy Germanium Detector

A natural broad energy germanium (BEGe) detector is operated in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) for a feasibility study of building the next generation experiment of the neutrinoless double-beta (0{$νββ$}) decay of $^{76}$Ge. The setup of the prototype facility, characteristics of the BEGe detector, background reduction methods, and data analysis are described in this paper. A background index of 6.4$\times$10$^{-3}$ counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$day) is achieved and 1.86 times lower than our previous result of the CDEX-1 detector. No signal is observed with an exposure of 186.4 kg$\cdot$day, thus a limit on the half life of $^{76}$Ge 0$νββ$ decay is set at T$_{1/2}^{0ν}$ $>$ 5.62$\times$10$^{22}$ yr at 90% C.L.. The limit corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass in the range of 4.6 $\sim$ 10.3 eV, dependent on the nuclear matrix elements.

Performance of TPC detector prototype integrated with UV laser tracks for the circular collider

Several new experimental concepts in high-energy particle physics have been proposed in recent years. The physical goals include precisely measuring the properties of particles such as Higgs, Z and W, and even looking for signs of new physics at future colliders. To meet the evolving requirements for particle track detector, Time Projection Chamber(TPC) detector prototype integrated with a UV laser track system was developed for the main track detector at Circular Electron Positron Collider(CEPC). This prototype consists of 6 horizontal laser tracks around TPC detector chamber, a fast electronics readout of 1280 channels, a GEM detector with $200\times 200\,mm^2$ active area, and the DAQ system. The hit resolution, dE/dx resolution and drift velocity were studied by measuring and analyzing using the TPC prototype and UV laser tracks. The dE/dx resolution of the prototype was measured to be $(8.9\pm0.4)\,\%$. Extrapolating this to CEPC TPC with 220 layers and longer track, the resolution was estimated to be $(3.36\pm0.26)\,\%$. All results indicated that the TPC detector prototype integrated with UV laser tracks can work well.

Studies of the Earth shielding effect to direct dark matter searches at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

Dark matter direct detection experiments mostly operate at deep underground laboratories. It is necessary to consider shielding effect of the Earth, especially for dark matter particles interacting with a large cross section. We analyzed and simulated the Earth shielding effect for dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) with a simulation package, CJPL Earth Shielding Simulation code (CJPL\_ESS), which is applicable to other underground locations. The further constraints on the $χ$-N cross section exclusion regions are derived based on the studies with CDEX experiment data.

Status and initial physics performance studies of the MPD experiment at NICA

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. Selected performance studies for particular physics measurements at MPD are presented and discussed in the context of existing data and theoretical expectations.

Contagion in simplicial complexes

The propagation of information in social, biological and technological systems represents a crucial component in their dynamic behavior. When limited to pairwise interactions, a rather firm grip is available on the relevant parameters and critical transitions of these spreading processes, most notably the pandemic transition, which indicates the conditions for the spread to cover a large fraction of the network. The challenge is that, in many relevant applications, the spread is driven by higher order relationships, in which several components undergo a group interaction. To address this, we analyze the spreading dynamics in a simplicial complex environment, designed to capture the coexistence of interactions of different orders. We find that, while pairwise interactions play a key role in the initial stages of the spread, once it gains coverage, higher order simplices take over and drive the contagion dynamics. The result is a distinctive spreading phase diagram, exhibiting a discontinuous pandemic transition, and hence offering a qualitative departure from the traditional network spreading dynamics.

Perspective: Towards the predictive discovery of ambipolarly dopable ultra-wide-band-gap semiconductors: the case of rutile GeO$_2$

Ultrawide-band-gap (UWBG) semiconductors are promising for fast, compact, and energy-efficient power-electronics devices. Their wider band gaps result in higher breakdown electric fields that enable high-power switching with a lower energy loss. Yet, the leading UWBG semiconductors suffer from intrinsic materials limitations with regards to their doping asymmetry that impedes their adoption in CMOS technology. Improvements in the ambipolar doping of UWBG materials will enable a wider range of applications in power electronics as well as deep- UV optoelectronics. These advances can be accomplished through theoretical insights on the limitations of current UWBG materials coupled with the computational prediction and experimental demonstration of alternative UWBG semiconductor materials with improved doping and transport properties. As an example, we discuss the case of rutile GeO$_2$ (r-GeO$_2$), a water-insoluble GeO$_2$ polytype which is theoretically predicted to combine an ultra-wide gap with ambipolar dopability, high carrier mobilities, and a higher thermal conductivity than \b{eta}-Ga$_2$O$_3$. The subsequent realization of single-crystalline r-GeO$_2$ thin films by molecular beam epitaxy provides the opportunity to realize r-GeO$_2$ for electronic applications. Future efforts towards the predictive discovery and design of new UWBG semiconductors include advances in first-principles theory and high-performance computing software, as well as the demonstration of controlled doping in high-quality thin films with lower dislocation densities and optimized film properties.

First experimental constraints on WIMP couplings in the effective field theory framework from CDEX

We present weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search results performed using two approaches of effective field theory from the China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX), based on the data from both CDEX-1B and CDEX-10 stages. In the nonrelativistic effective field theory approach, both time-integrated and annual modulation analyses were used to set new limits for the coupling of WIMP-nucleon effective operators at 90% confidence level (C.L.) and improve over the current bounds in the low $m_χ$ region. In the chiral effective field theory approach, data from CDEX-10 were used to set an upper limit on WIMP-pion coupling at 90% C.L. We for the first time extended the limit to the $m_χ<$ 6 GeV/$c^2$ region.

Improved limits on solar axions and bosonic dark matter from the CDEX-1B experiment using the profile likelihood ratio method

We present the improved constraints on couplings of solar axions and more generic bosonic dark matter particles using 737.1 kg-days of data from the CDEX-1B experiment. The CDEX-1B experiment, located at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, primarily aims at the direct detection of weakly interacting massive particles using a p-type point-contact germanium detector. We adopt the profile likelihood ratio method for analysis of data in the presence of backgrounds. An energy threshold of 160 eV was achieved, much better than the 475 eV of CDEX-1A with an exposure of 335.6 kg-days. This significantly improves the sensitivity for the bosonic dark matter below 0.8 keV among germanium detectors. Limits are also placed on the coupling $g_{Ae} < 2.48 \times 10^{-11}$ from Compton, bremsstrahlung, atomic-recombination and de-excitation channels and $g^{eff}_{AN} \times g_{Ae} < 4.14 \times 10^{-17}$ from a $^{57}$Fe M1 transition at 90\% confidence level.

Nodal superconducting gap in LiFeP revealed by NMR: contrast with LiFeAs

Identifying the uniqueness of FeP-based superconductors may shed new lights on the mechanism of superconductivity in iron-pnictides. Here, we report nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) studies on LiFeP and LiFeAs which have the same crystal structure but different pnictogen atoms. The NMR spectrum is sensitive to inhomogeneous magnetic fields in the vortex state and can provide the information on the superconducting pairing symmetry through the temperature dependence of London penetration depth $λ_L$. We find that $λ_L$ saturates below $T \sim 0.2$ $T_c$ in LiFeAs, where $T_c$ is the superconducting transition temperature, indicating nodeless superconducting gaps. Furthermore, by using a two-gaps model, we simulate the temperature dependence of $λ_L$ and obtain the superconducting gaps of LiFeAs, as $Δ_1 = 1.2$ $k_B T_c$ and $Δ_2 = 2.8$ $k_B T_c$, in agreement with previous result from spin-lattice relaxation. For LiFeP, in contrast, the London penetration depth $λ_L$ does not show any saturation down to $T \sim 0.03 $ $T_c$, indicating nodes in the superconducting energy gap function. Finally, we demonstrate that the strong spin fluctuations with diffusive characteristics exist in LiFeP, as in some cuprate high temperature superconductors.

A Bayesian level set method for an inverse medium scattering problem in acoustics

In this work, we are interested in the determination of the shape of the scatterer for the two dimensional time harmonic inverse medium scattering problems in acoustics. The scatterer is assumed to be a piecewise constant function with a known value inside inhomogeneities, and its shape is represented by the level set functions for which we investigate the information using the Bayesian method. In the Bayesian framework, the solution of the geometric inverse problem is defined as a posterior probability distribution. The well-posedness of the posterior distribution would be discussed, and the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods will be applied to generate samples from the arising posterior distribution. Numerical experiments will be presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Bayesian optimization for inverse problems in time-dependent quantum dynamics

We demonstrate an efficient algorithm for inverse problems in time-dependent quantum dynamics based on feedback loops between Hamiltonian parameters and the solutions of the Schrödinger equation. Our approach formulates the inverse problem as a target vector estimation problem and uses Bayesian surrogate models of the Schrödinger equation solutions to direct the optimization of feedback loops. For the surrogate models, we use Gaussian processes with vector outputs and composite kernels built by an iterative algorithm with Bayesian information criterion (BIC) as a kernel selection metric. The outputs of the Gaussian processes are designed to model an observable simultaneously at different time instances. We show that the use of Gaussian processes with vector outputs and the BIC-directed kernel construction reduce the number of iterations in the feedback loops by, at least, a factor of 3. We also demonstrate an application of Bayesian optimization for inverse problems with noisy data. To demonstrate the algorithm, we consider the orientation and alignment of polyatomic molecules SO$_2$ and chiral propylene oxide (PPO) induced by strong laser pulses. We use simulated time evolutions of the orientation or alignment signals to determine the relevant components of the molecular polarizability tensors to within 1% accuracy. We show that, for the five independent components of the polarizability tensor of PPO, this can be achieved with as few as 30 quantum dynamics calculations.

Optimization of the JUNO liquid scintillator composition using a Daya Bay antineutrino detector

To maximize the light yield of the liquid scintillator (LS) for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 t LS sample was produced in a pilot plant at Daya Bay. The optical properties of the new LS in various compositions were studied by replacing the gadolinium-loaded LS in one antineutrino detector. The concentrations of the fluor, PPO, and the wavelength shifter, bis-MSB, were increased in 12 steps from 0.5 g/L and <0.01 mg/L to 4 g/L and 13 mg/L, respectively. The numbers of total detected photoelectrons suggest that, with the optically purified solvent, the bis-MSB concentration does not need to be more than 4 mg/L. To bridge the one order of magnitude in the detector size difference between Daya Bay and JUNO, the Daya Bay data were used to tune the parameters of a newly developed optical model. Then, the model and tuned parameters were used in the JUNO simulation. This enabled to determine the optimal composition for the JUNO LS: purified solvent LAB with 2.5 g/L PPO, and 1 to 4 mg/L bis-MSB.

Direct Detection Constraints on Dark Photons with CDEX-10 Experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We report constraints on the dark photon effective kinetic mixing parameter ($κ$) with data taken from two ${p}$-type point-contact germanium detectors of the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. The 90\% confidence level upper limits on $κ$ of solar dark photon from 205.4 kg-day exposure are derived, probing new parameter space with masses (${m_V}$) from 10 to 300 eV/${c^2}$ in direct detection experiments. Considering dark photon as the cosmological dark matter, limits at 90\% confidence level with ${m_V}$ from 0.1 to 4.0 keV/${c^2}$ are set from 449.6 kg-day data, with a minimum of ${\rm{κ=1.3 \times 10^{-15}}}$ at ${\rm{m_V=200\ eV/c^2}}$.

Search for Light Weakly-Interacting-Massive-Particle Dark Matter by Annual Modulation Analysis with a Point-Contact Germanium Detector at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We present results on light weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) searches with annual modulation (AM) analysis on data from a 1-kg mass $p$-type point-contact germanium detector of the CDEX-1B experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Datasets with a total live time of 3.2 yr within a 4.2 yr span are analyzed with analysis threshold of 250 eVee. Limits on WIMP-nucleus ($χ$-$N$) spin-independent cross sections as function of WIMP mass ($m_χ$) at 90\% confidence level (C.L.) are derived using the dark matter halo model. Within the context of the standard halo model, the 90\% C.L. allowed regions implied by the DAMA/LIBRA and CoGeNT AM-based analysis are excluded at $>$99.99\% and 98\% C.L., respectively. These results correspond to the best sensitivity at $m_χ$$<$6$~{\rm GeV}/c^2$ among WIMP AM measurements to date.

Constraints on Spin-Independent Nucleus Scattering with sub-GeV Weakly Interacting Massive Particle Dark Matter from the CDEX-1B Experiment at the China Jin-Ping Laboratory

We report results on the searches of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with sub-GeV masses ($m_χ$) via WIMP-nucleus spin-independent scattering with Migdal effect incorporated. Analysis on time-integrated (TI) and annual modulation (AM) effects on CDEX-1B data are performed, with 737.1 kg$\cdot$day exposure and 160 eVee threshold for TI analysis, and 1107.5 kg$\cdot$day exposure and 250 eVee threshold for AM analysis. The sensitive windows in $m_χ$ are expanded by an order of magnitude to lower DM masses with Migdal effect incorporated. New limits on $σ_{χN}^{\rm SI}$ at 90\% confidence level are derived as $2\times$10$^{-32}\sim7\times$10$^{-35}$ $\rm cm^2$ for TI analysis at $m_χ\sim$ 50$-$180 MeV/$c^2$, and $3\times$10$^{-32}\sim9\times$10$^{-38}$ $\rm cm^2$ for AM analysis at $m_χ\sim$75 MeV/$c^2-$3.0 GeV/$c^2$.

Kinetic fluid moments closure for a magnetized plasma with collisions

A novel method aimed at a kinetic moments closure for a magnetized plasma with arbitrary collisionality is proposed. The intended first application is to a tokamak edge and scrape-off-layer plasma. The velocity distribution function for each species is expanded in 8 Gaussian Radial Basis Functions (GRBFs) which are essentially shifted Maxwellians at eight representative 3D-velocity points of drift. The vector of 8 fluid moments (for particle density, 3 particle fluxes, total energy density, and 3 energy fluxes) has an 8x8 analytic linear matrix relation to the vector of 8 GRBF density weights in 3D real space. The 8 fluid moments with sources for each species are advanced in time while the 8 GRBF weighs are determined from the 8x8 inverse matrix. The two closure moments (for the stress tensor and the energy weighted stress tensor) are linearly determined from the GRBF weights. Most importantly the velocity moments of the nonlinear Coulomb Fokker-Planck collision operator [Rosenbluth et al, Phys. Rev 107, 1957] are evaluated from the GRBF weights. Generalization from 8 to 12, 16, 20 .., in an energy weighted moment hierarchy is straightforward. The electric field follows from a generalized vorticity (quasi-neutral current continuity) equation. A strong drift ordering approximation can be applied to eliminate any spuriously unstable high frequency cyclotron motions. A novel weak drift ordering two-time step scheme avoids the vorticity equation by following ion cyclotron motion in time to get the electric field with ion gyroaveraging. Inclusion of low-beta magnetic perturbations is straightforward.

Performances of a prototype point-contact germanium detector immersed in liquid nitrogen for light dark matter search

The CDEX-10 experiment searches for light weakly-interacting massive particles, a form of dark matter, at the China JinPing underground laboratory, where approximately 10 kg of germanium detectors are arranged in an array and immersed in liquid nitrogen. Herein, we report on the experimental apparatus, detector characterization, and spectrum analysis of one prototype detector. Owing to the higher rise-time resolution of the CDEX-10 prototype detector as compared with CDEX-1B, we identified the origin of an observed category of extremely fast events. For data analysis of the CDEX-10 prototype, we introduced and applied an improved bulk/surface event discrimination method. The results of the new method were compared to those of the CDEX-1B spectrum. Both sets of results showed good consistency in the 0--12 keVee energy range, except for the 8.0 keV K-shell X-ray peak from the external copper.

Single Crystal Growth and Spin Polarization Measurements of Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor (BaK)(ZnMn)2As2

Recently a new type diluted magnetic semiconductor (BaK)(ZnMn)2As2 (BZA) with high Cure temperature (Tc) was discovered showing independent spin and charge doping mechanism. This makes BZA a promising material for spintronics devices. Here we report for the first time the successful growth of BZA single crystal. An Andreev reflection junction that can be used to evaluate spin polarization was fabricated based on the BZA single crystal, a 66% spin polarization of the BZA single crystal was hence obtained by Andreev reflection spectroscopy analysis.
