Optimal Reconstruction of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations for DESI 2024

Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) provide a robust standard ruler to measure the expansion history of the Universe through galaxy clustering. Density-field reconstruction is now a widely adopted procedure for increasing the precision and accuracy of the BAO detection. With the goal of finding the optimal reconstruction settings to be used in the DESI 2024 galaxy BAO analysis, we assess the sensitivity of the post-reconstruction BAO constraints to different choices in our analysis configuration, performing tests on blinded data from the first year of DESI observations (DR1), as well as on mocks that mimic the expected clustering and selection properties of the DESI DR1 target samples. Overall, we find that BAO constraints remain robust against multiple aspects in the reconstruction process, including the choice of smoothing scale, treatment of redshift-space distortions, fiber assignment incompleteness, and parameterizations of the BAO model. We also present a series of tests that DESI followed in order to assess the maturity of the end-to-end galaxy BAO pipeline before the unblinding of the large-scale structure catalogs.

HOD-Dependent Systematics in Emission Line Galaxies for the DESI 2024 BAO analysis

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will provide precise measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) to constrain the expansion history of the Universe and set stringent constraints on dark energy. Therefore, precise control of the global error budget due to various systematic effects is required for the DESI 2024 BAO analysis. In this work, we focus on the robustness of the BAO analysis against the Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) modeling for the Emission Line Galaxy (ELG) tracer. Based on a common dark matter simulation, our analysis relies on HOD mocks tuned to early DESI data, namely the One-Percent survey data. To build the mocks, we use several HOD models for the ELG tracer as well as extensions to the baseline HOD models. Among these extensions, we consider distinct recipes for galactic conformity and assembly bias. We perform two independent analyses in the Fourier space and in the configuration space. We recover the BAO signal from two-point measurements after performing reconstruction on our mocks. Additionally, we also apply the control variates technique to reduce sample variance noise. Our BAO analysis can recover the isotropic BAO parameter $α_\text{iso}$ within 0.1\% and the Alcock Paczynski parameter $α_\text{AP}$ within 0.3\%. Overall, we find that our systematic error due to the HOD dependence is below 0.17\%, with the Fourier space analysis being more robust against the HOD systematics. We conclude that our analysis pipeline is robust enough against the HOD systematics for the ELG tracer in the DESI 2024 BAO analysis.

DESI 2024 III: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from Galaxies and Quasars

We present the DESI 2024 galaxy and quasar baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) measurements using over 5.7 million unique galaxy and quasar redshifts in the range 0.1<z<2.1. Divided by tracer type, we utilize 300,017 galaxies from the magnitude-limited Bright Galaxy Survey with 0.1<z<0.4, 2,138,600 Luminous Red Galaxies with 0.4<z<1.1, 2,432,022 Emission Line Galaxies with 0.8<z<1.6, and 856,652 quasars with 0.8<z<2.1, over a ~7,500 square degree footprint. The analysis was blinded at the catalog-level to avoid confirmation bias. All fiducial choices of the BAO fitting and reconstruction methodology, as well as the size of the systematic errors, were determined on the basis of the tests with mock catalogs and the blinded data catalogs. We present several improvements to the BAO analysis pipeline, including enhancing the BAO fitting and reconstruction methods in a more physically-motivated direction, and also present results using combinations of tracers. We present a re-analysis of SDSS BOSS and eBOSS results applying the improved DESI methodology and find scatter consistent with the level of the quoted SDSS theoretical systematic uncertainties. With the total effective survey volume of ~ 18 Gpc$^3$, the combined precision of the BAO measurements across the six different redshift bins is ~0.52%, marking a 1.2-fold improvement over the previous state-of-the-art results using only first-year data. We detect the BAO in all of these six redshift bins. The highest significance of BAO detection is $9.1σ$ at the effective redshift of 0.93, with a constraint of 0.86% placed on the BAO scale. We find our measurements are systematically larger than the prediction of Planck-2018 LCDM model at z<0.8. We translate the results into transverse comoving distance and radial Hubble distance measurements, which are used to constrain cosmological models in our companion paper [abridged].

Validation of the Scientific Program for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) was designed to conduct a survey covering 14,000 deg$^2$ over five years to constrain the cosmic expansion history through precise measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). The scientific program for DESI was evaluated during a five month Survey Validation (SV) campaign before beginning full operations. This program produced deep spectra of tens of thousands of objects from each of the stellar (MWS), bright galaxy (BGS), luminous red galaxy (LRG), emission line galaxy (ELG), and quasar target classes. These SV spectra were used to optimize redshift distributions, characterize exposure times, determine calibration procedures, and assess observational overheads for the five-year program. In this paper, we present the final target selection algorithms, redshift distributions, and projected cosmology constraints resulting from those studies. We also present a `One-Percent survey' conducted at the conclusion of Survey Validation covering 140 deg$^2$ using the final target selection algorithms with exposures of a depth typical of the main survey. The Survey Validation indicates that DESI will be able to complete the full 14,000 deg$^2$ program with spectroscopically-confirmed targets from the MWS, BGS, LRG, ELG, and quasar programs with total sample sizes of 7.2, 13.8, 7.46, 15.7, and 2.87 million, respectively. These samples will allow exploration of the Milky Way halo, clustering on all scales, and BAO measurements with a statistical precision of 0.28% over the redshift interval $z<1.1$, 0.39% over the redshift interval $1.1<z<1.9$, and 0.46% over the redshift interval $1.9<z<3.5$.

Impact of NOMA on Age of Information: A Grant-Free Transmission Perspective

The aim of this paper is to characterize the impact of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) on the age of information (AoI) of grant-free transmission. In particular, a low-complexity form of NOMA, termed NOMA-assisted random access, is applied to grant-free transmission in order to illustrate the two benefits of NOMA for AoI reduction, namely increasing channel access and reducing user collisions. Closed-form analytical expressions for the AoI achieved by NOMA assisted grant-free transmission are obtained, and asymptotic studies are carried out to demonstrate that the use of the simplest form of NOMA is already sufficient to reduce the AoI of orthogonal multiple access (OMA) by more than 40%. In addition, the developed analytical expressions are also shown to be useful for optimizing the users' transmission attempt probabilities, which are key parameters for grant-free transmission.

Overview of the Instrumentation for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has embarked on an ambitious five-year survey to explore the nature of dark energy with spectroscopy of 40 million galaxies and quasars. DESI will determine precise redshifts and employ the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation method to measure distances from the nearby universe to z > 3.5, as well as measure the growth of structure and probe potential modifications to general relativity. In this paper we describe the significant instrumentation we developed for the DESI survey. The new instrumentation includes a wide-field, 3.2-deg diameter prime-focus corrector that focuses the light onto 5020 robotic fiber positioners on the 0.812 m diameter, aspheric focal surface. The positioners and their fibers are divided among ten wedge-shaped petals. Each petal is connected to one of ten spectrographs via a contiguous, high-efficiency, nearly 50 m fiber cable bundle. The ten spectrographs each use a pair of dichroics to split the light into three channels that together record the light from 360 - 980 nm with a resolution of 2000 to 5000. We describe the science requirements, technical requirements on the instrumentation, and management of the project. DESI was installed at the 4-m Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak, and we also describe the facility upgrades to prepare for DESI and the installation and functional verification process. DESI has achieved all of its performance goals, and the DESI survey began in May 2021. Some performance highlights include RMS positioner accuracy better than 0.1", SNR per \sqrtÅ > 0.5 for a z > 2 quasar with flux 0.28e-17 erg/s/cm^2/A at 380 nm in 4000s, and median SNR = 7 of the [OII] doublet at 8e-17 erg/s/cm^2 in a 1000s exposure for emission line galaxies at z = 1.4 - 1.6. We conclude with highlights from the on-sky validation and commissioning of the instrument, key successes, and lessons learned. (abridged)

A Passivity Based Framework for Safe Physical Human Robot Interaction

In this paper, the problem of making a safe compliant contact between a human and an assistive robot is considered. Users with disabilities have a need to utilize their assistive robots for physical human-robot interaction (PHRI) during certain activities of daily living (ADLs). Specifically, we propose a hybrid force/velocity/attitude control for a PHRI system based on measurements from a 6-axis force/torque sensor mounted on the robot wrist. While automatically aligning the end-effector surface with the unknown environmental (human) surface, a desired commanded force is applied in the normal direction while following desired velocity commands in the tangential directions. A Lyapunov based stability analysis is provided to prove both convergence as well as passivity of the interaction to ensure both performance and safety. Simulation as well as experimental results verify the performance and robustness of the proposed hybrid controller in the presence of dynamic uncertainties as well as safe physical human-robot interactions for a kinematically redundant robotic manipulator.

Power Minimization for Multi-cell Uplink NOMA with Imperfect SIC

In this paper, we investigate a multi-cell uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system with imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). The objective of the formulated optimization problem is to minimize the total power consumption under users' quality-of-service constraints. The considered problem is first transformed into a linear programming problem, upon which centralized and distributed optimal solutions are proposed. Numerical results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed solutions and evaluate the impact of imperfect SIC on the system performance.

Unveiling the Importance of SIC in NOMA Systems: Part I -- State of the Art and Recent Findings

The key idea of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is to serve multiple users simultaneously at the same time and frequency, which can result in excessive multiple-access interference. As a crucial component of NOMA systems, successive interference cancelation (SIC) is key to combating this multiple-access interference, and is focused on in this letter, where an overview of SIC decoding order selection schemes is provided. In particular, selecting the SIC decoding order based on the users' channel state information (CSI) and the users' quality of service (QoS), respectively, is discussed. The limitations of these two approaches are illustrated, and then a recently proposed scheme, termed hybrid SIC, which dynamically adapts the SIC decoding order is presented and shown to achieve a surprising performance improvement that cannot be realized by the conventional SIC decoding order selection schemes individually.

Unveiling the Importance of SIC in NOMA Systems: Part II: New Results and Future Directions

In most existing works on non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), the decoding order of successive interference cancellation (SIC) is prefixed and based on either the users' channel conditions or their quality of service (QoS) requirements. A recent work on NOMA assisted semi-grant-free transmission showed that the use of a more sophisticated hybrid SIC scheme can yield significant performance improvements. This letter illustrates how the concept of hybrid SIC can be generalized and applied to different NOMA applications. We first use NOMA assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) as an example to illustrate the benefits of hybrid SIC, where new results for delay and energy minimization are presented. Then, future directions for generalizing hybrid SIC with adaptive decoding order selection as well as its promising applications are discussed.

A New QoS-Guarantee Strategy for NOMA Assisted Semi-Grant-Free Transmission

Semi-grant-free (SGF) transmission has recently received significant attention due to its capability to accommodate massive connectivity and reduce access delay by admitting grant-free users to channels which would otherwise be solely occupied by grant-based users. In this paper, a new SGF transmission scheme that exploits the flexibility in choosing the decoding order in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is proposed. Compared to existing SGF schemes, this new scheme can ensure that admitting the grant-free users is completely transparent to the grant-based users, i.e., the grant-based users' quality-of-service experience is guaranteed to be the same as for orthogonal multiple access. In addition, compared to existing SGF schemes, the proposed SGF scheme can significantly improve the robustness of the grant-free users' transmissions and effectively avoid outage probability error floors. To facilitate the performance evaluation of the proposed SGF transmission scheme, an exact expression for the outage probability is obtained and an asymptotic analysis is conducted to show that the achievable multi-user diversity gain is proportional to the number of participating grant-free users. Computer simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed SGF transmission scheme and verify the accuracy of the developed analytical results.

A Simple Design of IRS-NOMA Transmission

This letter proposes a simple design of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission, which can ensure that more users are served on each orthogonal spatial direction than spatial division multiple access (SDMA). In particular, by employing IRS, the directions of users' channel vectors can be effectively aligned, which facilitates the implementation of NOMA. Both analytical and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed IRS-NOMA scheme and also study the impact of hardware impairments on IRS-NOMA.

User Association and Resource Allocation in Unified NOMA Enabled Heterogeneous Ultra Dense Networks

Heterogeneous ultra dense networks (HUDNs) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) have been identified as two proposing techniques for the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems due to their great capabilities to enhance spectrum efficiency. This article investigates the application of NOMA techniques in HUDNs to support massive connectivity in 5G systems. Particularly, a unified NOMA framework is proposed, including power-domain NOMA and code-domain NOMA, which can be configured flexibly to serve different applications scenarios. As a further advance, the unified NOMA framework enabled HUDNs is further investigated, with particular focuses on the user association and resource allocation. Two case studies are provided for demonstrating the effectiveness of the unified NOMA enabled HUDNs. Finally, some main challenges and promising research directions in NOMA enabled HUDNs are identified. Random Beamforming in Millimeter-Wave NOMA Networks

This paper investigates the coexistence between two key enabling technologies for the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications. Particularly, the application of random beamforming to the addressed mmWave-NOMA scenario is considered in this paper, in order to avoid the requirement that the base station knows all the users' channel state information. Stochastic geometry is used to characterize the performance of the proposed mmWave-NOMA transmission scheme, by using the key features of mmWave systems, e.g., mmWave transmission is highly directional and potential blockages will thin the user distribution. Two random beamforming approaches which can further reduce the system overhead are also proposed to the addressed mmWave-NOMA communication scenario, where their performance is studied by developing analytical results about sum rates and outage probabilities. Simulation results are also provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed mmWave-NOMA transmission schemes and verify the accuracy of the developed analytical results.

MIMO-NOMA Design for Small Packet Transmission in the Internet of Things

A feature of the Internet of Things (IoT) is that some users in the system need to be served quickly for small packet transmission. To address this requirement, a new multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) scheme is designed in this paper, where one user is served with its quality of service (QoS) requirement strictly met, and the other user is served opportunistically by using the NOMA concept. The novelty of this new scheme is that it confronts the challenge that most existing MIMO-NOMA schemes rely on the assumption that users' channel conditions are different, a strong assumption which may not be valid in practice. The developed precoding and detection strategies can effectively create a significant difference between the users' effective channel gains, and therefore the potential of NOMA can be realized even if the users' original channel conditions are similar. Analytical and numerical results are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed MIMO-NOMA scheme.

Reflection high-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy study of InP(001) surface reconstructions

The reconstructions of the InP(001) surface prepared by molecular beam epitaxy have been studied with in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The growth chamber contains a highly accurate temperature measurement system and uses a solid-source, cracked phosphorus, valved effusion cell. Five InP(001) reconstructions are observed with RHEED by analyzing patterns in three principal directions. Under a fixed P2 flux, decreasing the substrate temperature gives the following reconstructions: c(2x8), (2x4), (2x1), (2x2), and c(4x4). In situ STM images reveal that only two of these reconstructions yields long-range periodicity in real space. InP(001) does not form the metal rich (4x2) reconstruction, which is surprising because the (4x2) reconstruction has been coined the universal surface reconstruction since all III-V(001) surfaces were thought to favor its formation.

The dynamics of this process are monitored with atomic-scale resolution using scanning tunneling microscopy. Surprisingly, pit formation dominates the early stages of island formation. Insight into the nucleation process is reported.

Electron-beam evaporated cobalt films on molecular beam epitaxy prepared GaAs(001)

We have deposited Co films on the GaAs(001) surface by using an e-beam evaporation method. The thicknesses of the Co films are measured by using x-ray reflectivity and Rutherford backscattering. The magnetic properties of the films have been measured using superconducting quantum interference device. The magnetization of the films was found to decrease with increasing film thickness. The slight degradation of magnetic properties is attributed to increasing roughness on the Co surface or the Co/GaAs interface during the Co deposition.
