Nonmagnetic Ground State in RuO$_2$ Revealed by Muon Spin Rotation

The magnetic ground state of single crystalline RuO$_2$ was investigated by the muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) experiment. The spin precession signal due to the spontaneous internal magnetic field $B_{\rm loc}$, which is expected in the magnetically ordered phase, was not observed in the temperature range 5--400~K. Muon sites were evaluated by first-principles calculations using dilute hydrogen simulating muon as pseudo-hydrogen, and $B_{\rm loc}$ was simulated for the antiferromagnetic (AFM) structures with a Ru magnetic moment $|{\bf m}_{\rm Ru}|\approx0.05\mu_\mathrm{B}$ suggested from diffraction experiments. As a result, the possibility was ruled out that muons are localized at sites where $B_{\rm loc}$ accidentally cancels. Conversely, assuming that the slow relaxation observed in $\mu$SR spectra was part of the precession signal, the upper limit for the magnitude of $|{\bf m}_{\rm Ru}|$ was estimated to be $4.8(2)\times10^{-4}\mu_{\rm B}$, which is significantly less than $0.05\mu_\mathrm{B}$. These results indicate that the AFM order, as reported, is unlikely to exist in the bulk crystal.

Rhenium oxyhalides: a showcase for anisotropic-triangular-lattice quantum antiferromagnets

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an anisotropic triangular lattice (ATL) is an archetypal spin system hosting exotic quantum magnetism and dimensional crossover. However, the progress in experimental research on this field has been limited due to the scarcity of ideal model materials. Here, we show that rhenium oxyhalides $A_{3}$ReO$_{5}X_{2}$, where spin-1/2 Re$^{6+}$ ions form a layered structure of ATLs, allow for flexible chemical substitution in both cation $A^{2+}$ ($A$ = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb) and anion $X^{-}$ ($X$ = Cl, Br) sites, leading to seven synthesizable compounds. By combining magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements with theoretical calculations using the orthogonalized finite-temperature Lanczos method, we find that the anisotropy $J'/J$ ranges from 0.25 to 0.45 depending on the chemical composition. Our findings demonstrate that $A_{3}$ReO$_{5}X_{2}$ is an excellent platform for realizing diverse effective spin Hamiltonians that differ in the strength of the anisotropy $J'/J$ as well as the relevance of perturbation terms such as the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and interlayer exchange coupling.

Dimensional reduction and incommensurate dynamic correlations in the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$

The observation of spinon excitations in the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ triangular antiferromagnet Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$ reveals a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) nature of magnetic correlations, in spite of the nominally 2D magnetic structure. This phenomenon is known as frustration-induced dimensional reduction. Here, we present high-field electron spin resonance spectroscopy and magnetization studies of Ca$_3$ReO$_5$Cl$_2$, allowing us not only to refine spin-Hamiltonian parameters, but also to investigate peculiarities of its low-energy spin dynamics. We argue that the presence of the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) shifts the spinon continuum in momentum space and, as a result, opens a zero-field gap at the $Γ$ point. We observed this gap directly. The shift is found to be consistent with the structural modulation in the ordered state, suggesting this material as a perfect model triangular-lattice system, where a pure DMI-spiral ground state can be realized.

Kitaev Spin Liquid Candidate OsxCl3 Comprised of Honeycomb Nano-Domains

An osmium chloride with the chemical formula of OsxCl3 (x = 0.81) was synthesized and its crystal structure and thermodynamic properties were investigated. OsxCl3 crystallizes in a layered CdCl2-type structure with the triangular lattice partially occupied by Os ions on average. However, on microscopic length scales, the triangular lattice is composed of nano-domains with a honeycomb arrangement of Os ions, as observed by electron microscopy and Raman scattering experiments. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements revealed an absence of magnetic long-range order down to 0.08 K, while a broad peak in heat capacity at 0.15 K may indicate a short-range order in the local honeycomb lattice. OsxCl3 may exhibit certain aspects of the Kitaev spin liquid that are expected for a perfect honeycomb lattice of osmium trichloride.

Spin and orbital dynamics through the metal-to-insulator transition in Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ probed with high-resolution RIXS

High-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements ($Δ$E = 46 meV) have been performed on Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ through the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). A magnetic excitation at 125 meV evolves continuously through the MIT, in agreement with recent Raman scattering results, and provides further confirmation for an all-in, all-out magnetic ground state. Asymmetry of this feature is likely a result of coupling between the electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. We also observe a broad continuum of interband excitations centered at 0.3 eV energy loss. This is indicative of significant hybridization between Os 5$d$ and O 2$p$ states, and concurrent itinerant nature of the system. In turn, this suggests a possible break down of the free-ion model for Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$.

Ultrafast dynamics in the Lifshitz-type 5${d}$ pyrochlore antiferromagnet Cd$_{2}$Os$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We investigate the ultrafast dynamics of Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$, a prototype material showing a Lifshitz-type transition as a function of temperature. In the paramagnetic metallic state, the photo-reflectivity shows a sub-picosecond relaxation, followed by a featureless small offset. In the antiferromagnetic state slightly below $T_N$, however, the photo-reflectivity resurges over hundreds of picoseconds, which goes beyond the usual realm of the effective-temperature model. Our observations are consistent with the Lifshitz phase transition of Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ driven by the evolution of the local magnetic moment.

Coupled Spin-Charge-Phonon Fluctuation in the All-In/All-Out Antiferromagnet Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$

We report on a novel spin-charge fluctuation in the all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$, where the spin fluctuation is driven by the conduction of thermally excited electrons/holes and associated fluctuation of Os valence. The fluctuation exhibits an activation energy significantly greater than the spin-charge excitation gap and a peculiar frequency range of $10^{6}$--$10^{10}$ s$^{-1}$. These features are attributed to the hopping motion of carriers as small polarons in the insulating phase, where the polaron state is presumably induced by the magnetoelastic coupling via the strong spin-orbit interaction. Such a coupled spin-charge-phonon fluctuation manifests as a part of the metal-insulator transition that is extended over a wide temperature range due to the modest electron correlation comparable with other interactions characteristic for 5$d$-subshell systems.

A series of magnon crystals appearing under ultrahigh magnetic fields in a kagomé antiferromagnet

Search for a new quantum state of matter emerging in a crystal is one of recent trends in condensed matter physics. For magnetic materials, geometrical frustration and high magnetic field are two key ingredients to realize it: a conventional magnetic order is possibly destroyed by competing interactions (frustration) and is replaced by an exotic state that is characterized in terms of quasiparticles, that are magnons, and the magnetic field can control the density and chemical potential of the magnons. Here we show that a synthetic copper mineral, Cd-kapellasite, comprising a kagome lattice made of corner-sharing triangles of Cu2+ ions carrying spin-1/2 exhibits an unprecedented series of fractional magnetization plateaux in ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 160 T, which may be interpreted as crystallizations of emergent magnons localized on the hexagon of the kagome lattice. Our observation reveals a novel type of particle physics realized in a highly frustrated magnet.

Spin dynamics in the high-field phases of volborthite

We report single-crystal 51V NMR studies on volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2 2H2O, which is regarded as a quasi-two-dimensional frustrated magnet with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. In the 1/3 magnetization plateau above 28 T, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 indicates an excitation gap with a large effective g factor in the range of 4.6-5.9, pointing to magnon bound states. Below 26 T where the gap has closed, the NMR spectra indicate small internal fields with a Gaussian-like distribution, whereas 1/T1 shows a power-law-like temperature dependence in the paramagnetic state, which resembles a slowing down of spin fluctuations associated with magnetic order. We discuss the possibility of an exotic spin state caused by the condensation of magnon bound states below the magnetization plateau.

Maximizing Tc by tuning nematicity and magnetism in FeSe1-xSx superconductors

A fundamental issue concerning iron-based superconductivity is the roles of electronic nematicity and magnetism in realising high transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$). To address this issue, FeSe is a key material, as it exhibits a unique pressure phase diagram involving nonmagnetic nematic and pressure-induced antiferromagnetic ordered phases. However, as these two phases in FeSe overlap with each other, the effects of two orders on superconductivity remain perplexing. Here we construct the three-dimensional electronic phase diagram, temperature ($T$) against pressure ($P$) and isovalent S-substitution ($x$), for FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$, in which we achieve a complete separation of nematic and antiferromagnetic phases. In between, an extended nonmagnetic tetragonal phase emerges, where we find a striking enhancement of $T_{\rm c}$. The completed phase diagram uncovers two superconducting domes with similarly high $T_{\rm c}$ on both ends of the dome-shaped antiferromagnetic phase. The $T_{\rm c}(P,x)$ variation implies that nematic fluctuations unless accompanying magnetism are not relevant for high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductivity in this system.

Classical Spin Nematic Transition in LiGa$_{0.95}$In$_{0.05}$Cr$_4$O$_8$

We present the results of a combined $^7$Li NMR and diffraction study on LiGa$_{0.95}$In$_{0.05}$Cr$_4$O$_8$, a member of LiGa$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Cr$_4$O$_8$ "breathing" pyrochlore family. Via specific heat and NMR measurements, we find that the complex sequence of first-order transitions observed for $x=0$ is replaced by a single, apparently second-order transition at $T_f=11$ K. Neutron and X-ray diffraction rule out both structural symmetry lowering and magnetic long-range order as the origin of this transition. Instead, reverse Monte Carlo fitting of the magnetic diffuse scattering indicates that the low temperature phase may be described as a collinear spin nematic state, characterized by a quadrupolar order parameter. This state also shows signs of short range order between collinear spin arrangements on tetrahedra, revealed by mapping the reverse Monte Carlo spin configurations onto a three-state color model describing the manifold of nematic states.

Magnetotransport properties in a noncentrosymmetric itinerant magnet Cr$_{11}$Ge$_{19}$

We have investigated anomalous Hall effect and magnetoresistance in a noncentrosymmetric itinerant magnet Cr$_{11}$Ge$_{19}$. While the temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent anomalous Hall conductivity is just proportional to the magnetization above 30 K, it is more enhanced in the lower temperature region. The magnitude of negative magnetoresistance begins to increase toward low temperature around 30 K. The anisotropic magnetoresistance emerges at similar temperature. Because there is no anomaly in the temperature dependence of magnetization around 30 K, the origin of these observations in transport properties is ascribed to some electronic structure with the energy scale of 30 K. We speculate this is caused by the spin splitting due to breaking of spatial inversion symmetry.

One-Third Magnetization Plateau with a Preceding Novel Phase in Volborthite

We have synthesized high-quality single crystals of volborthite, a seemingly distorted kagome antiferromagnet, and carried out high-field magnetization measurements up to 74 T and 51V NMR measurements up to 30 T. An extremely wide 1/3 magnetization plateau appears above 28 T and continues over 74 T at 1.4 K, which has not been observed in previous study using polycrystalline samples. NMR spectra reveal an incommensurate order (most likely a spin-density wave order) below 22 T and a simple spin structure in the plateau phase. Moreover, a novel intermediate phase is found between 23 and 26 T, where the magnetization varies linearly with magnetic field and the NMR spectra indicate an inhomogeneous distribution of the internal magnetic field. This sequence of phases in volborthite bear a striking similarity to those of frustrated spin chains with a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling J1 competing with an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling J2.

Lifshitz metal-insulator transition induced by the all-in/all-out magnetic order in the pyrochlore oxide Cd2Os2O7

We investigate the metal-insulator transition (MIT) of the osmium pyrochlore oxide Cd2Os2O7 through transport and magnetization measurements. The MIT and a magnetic transition to the all-in/all-out (AIAO) order occur simultaneously at 227 K. We propose a mechanism based on a Lifshitz transition induced by the AIAO magnetic order probably via strong spin-orbit couplings in the specific semimetallic band structure. It is suggested, moreover, that two observed puzzles, a finite conductivity near T = 0 and an emergence of weak ferromagnetic moments, are not bulk properties but originate at magnetic domain walls between two kinds of AIAO domains.

Dynamic behavior of magnetic avalanches in the spin-ice compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

Avalanches of the magnetization, that is to say an abrupt reversal of the magnetization at a given field, have been previously reported in the spin-ice compound Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. This out-of-equilibrium process, induced by magneto-thermal heating, is quite usual in low temperature magnetization studies. A key point is to determine the physical origin of the avalanche process. In particular, in spin-ice compounds, the origin of the avalanches might be related to the monopole physics inherent to the system. We have performed a detailed study of the avalanche phenomena in three single crystals, with the field oriented along the [111] direction, perpendicular to [111] and along the [100] directions. We have measured the changing magnetization during the avalanches and conclude that avalanches in spin ice are quite slow compared to the avalanches reported in other systems such as molecular magnets. Our measurements show that the avalanches trigger after a delay of about 500 ms and that the reversal of the magnetization then occurs in a few hundreds of milliseconds. These features suggest an unusual propagation of the reversal, which might be due to the monopole motion. The avalanche fields seem to be reproducible in a given direction for different samples, but they strongly depend on the initial state of magnetization and on how the initial state was achieved.

Giant Phonon Softening and Enhancement of Superconductivity by Phosphorus Doping of BaNi2As2

The effects of phosphorus doping on the structural and superconducting phase transitions of BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ were studied. The specific heat, resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility were measured. The results revealed an abrupt increase in the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) from 0.6 K in the triclinic phase (space group P$\bar{1}$) with less phosphorus (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.067) to 3.3 K in the tetragonal phase (space group I4/mmm) with more phosphorus ($x$ $\geq$ 0.067). Our data analysis suggests that a doping-induced softening related to an in-plane Ni and As(P) phonon mode is responsible for the enhanced superconductivity in the tetragonal phase.

Tetrahedral Magnetic Order and the Metal-Insulator Transition in the Pyrochlore Lattice of Cd2Os2O7

Cd2Os2O7 shows a peculiar metal-insulator transition at 227 K with magnetic ordering in a frustrated pyrochlore lattice, but its magnetic structure in the ordered state and the transition origin are yet uncovered. We observed a commensurate magnetic peak by resonant x-ray scattering in a high-quality single crystal. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering experiments confirmed that the transition is not accompanied with any spatial symmetry breaking. We propose a noncollinear all-in/all-out spin arrangement on the tetrahedral network made of Os atoms. Based on this we suggest that the transition is not caused by Slater mechanism as believed earlier but by an alternative mechanism related to the formation of the specific tetrahedral magnetic order on the pyrochlore lattice in the presence of strong spin-orbit interactions.

Spin Dynamics at Very Low Temperature in Spin Ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We have performed AC susceptibility and DC magnetic relaxation measurements on the spin ice system Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ down to 0.08 K. The relaxation time of the magnetization has been estimated below 2 K down to 0.08 K. The spin dynamics of Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is well described by using two relaxation times ($τ_{\rm S}$ (short time) and $τ_{\rm L}$ (long time)). Both $τ_{\rm S}$ and $τ_{\rm L}$ increase on cooling. Assuming the Arrhenius law in the temperature range 0.5-1 K, we obtained an energy barrier of 9 K. Below 0.5 K, both $τ_{\rm S}$ and $τ_{\rm L}$ show a clear deviation from the thermal activated dynamics toward temperature independent relaxation, suggesting a quantum dynamics.
