Symmetry breaking of the zero energy Landau level in bilayer graphene

The quantum Hall effect near the charge neutrality point in bilayer graphene is investigated in high magnetic fields of up to 35 T using electronic transport measurements. In the high field regime, the eight-fold degeneracy in the zero energy Landau level is completely lifted, exhibiting new quantum Hall states corresponding filling factors $ν=$0, 1, 2, & 3. Measurements of the activation energy gap in tilted magnetic fields suggest that the Landau level splitting at the newly formed $ν=$1, 2, & 3 filling factors are independent of spin, consistent with the formation of a quantum Hall ferromagnet. In addition, measurements taken at the $ν$ = 0 charge neutral point show that, similar to single layer graphene, the bilayer becomes insulating at high fields.

Wigner Crystallization in a Quasi-3D Electronic System

When a strong magnetic field is applied perpendicularly (along z) to a sheet confining electrons to two dimensions (x-y), highly correlated states emerge as a result of the interplay between electron-electron interactions, confinement and disorder. These so-called fractional quantum Hall (FQH) liquids form a series of states which ultimately give way to a periodic electron solid that crystallizes at high magnetic fields. This quantum phase of electrons has been identified previously as a disorder-pinned two-dimensional Wigner crystal with broken translational symmetry in the x-y plane. Here, we report our discovery of a new insulating quantum phase of electrons when a very high magnetic field, up to 45T, is applied in a geometry parallel (y-direction) to the two-dimensional electron sheet. Our data point towards this new quantum phase being an electron solid in a "quasi-3D" configuration induced by orbital coupling with the parallel field.

Dirac charge dynamics in graphene by infrared spectroscopy

A remarkable manifestation of the quantum character of electrons in matter is offered by graphene, a single atomic layer of graphite. Unlike conventional solids where electrons are described with the Schrodinger equation, electronic excitations in graphene are governed by the Dirac Hamiltonian. Some of the intriguing electronic properties of graphene, such as massless Dirac quasiparticles with linear energy-momentum dispersion, have been confirmed by recent observations. Here we report an infrared (IR) spectromicroscopy study of charge dynamics in graphene integrated in gated devices. Our measurements verify the expected characteristics of graphene and, owing to the previously unattainable accuracy of IR experiments, also uncover significant departures of the quasiparticle dynamics from predictions made for Dirac fermions in idealized, free standing graphene. Several observations, including a marked deviation of the energy bands from the simple linear dispersion, point to the relevance of many body interactions to the rather exotic electromagnetic response in graphene.

Band structure asymmetry of bilayer graphene revealed by infrared spectroscopy

We report on infrared spectroscopy of bilayer graphene integrated in gated structures. We observed a significant asymmetry in the optical conductivity upon electrostatic doping of electrons and holes. We show that this finding arises from a marked asymmetry between the valence and conduction bands, which is mainly due to the inequivalence of the two sublattices within the graphene layer. From the conductivity data, the energy difference of the two sublattices is determined.

The RMS Survey: $^{13}$CO observations of candidate massive YSOs in the northern Galactic plane

Context: The Red MSX Source (RMS) survey is an ongoing multi-wavelength observational programme designed to return a large, high-resolution mid-infrared colour-selected sample of massive young stellar objects. Aims: A critical part of our follow-up programme is to conduct 13CO molecular line observations in order to determine kinematic distances to all of our MYSO candidates. These distances will allow us to identify and remove nearby low-mass YSOs and help in identifying evolved stars which are weak CO emitters. Method: We have used the 15 m James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), the 13.7 m telescope of the Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO), the 20 m Onsala telescope and the 22m Mopra telescope to conduct molecular line observations towards 508 MYSOs candidates located in the 1st and 2nd Quadrants. Results: We detect 13CO emission towards 780 RMS sources which corresponds to approximately 84% of those observed (911). A total of 2595 emission components are detected above 3sigma level (typically T^*_{\rm{A}} > 0.3K), with multiple components being observed towards the majority of these sources -- 520 sources (~56%) -- with an average of ~4 molecular clouds detected along each line of sight. We have used archival CS (J=2-1) and maser velocities to resolve the component multiplicity towards 175 sources (~20%) and have derived a criterion which is used to identify the most likely component for a further 191 multiple component sources. Combined with the single component detections we have obtained unambiguous kinematic velocities for 638 of the 780 MYSOs candidates towards which CO is detected (~80% of the detections). Using the Galactic rotation curve we calculate kinematic distances for all detected components.

Ultrahigh electron mobility in suspended graphene

We have achieved mobilities in excess of 200,000 cm^2/Vs at electron densities of ~2*10^11 cm^-2 by suspending single layer graphene. Suspension ~150 nm above a Si/SiO_2 gate electrode and electrical contacts to the graphene was achieved by a combination of electron beam lithography and etching. The specimens were cleaned in situ by employing current-induced heating, directly resulting in a significant improvement of electrical transport. Concomitant with large mobility enhancement, the widths of the characteristic Dirac peaks are reduced by a factor of 10 compared to traditional, non-suspended devices. This advance should allow for accessing the intrinsic transport properties of graphene.

On perpetual American put valuation and first-passage in a regime-switching model with jumps

In this paper we consider the problem of pricing a perpetual American put option in an exponential regime-switching Lévy model. For the case of the (dense) class of phase-type jumps and finitely many regimes we derive an explicit expression for the value function. The solution of the corresponding first passage problem under a state-dependent level rests on a path transformation and a new matrix Wiener-Hopf factorization result for this class of processes.

Cyclotron resonance in bilayer graphene

We present the first measurements of cyclotron resonance of electrons and holes in bilayer graphene. In magnetic fields up to B = 18 T we observe four distinct intraband transitions in both the conduction and valence bands. The transition energies are roughly linear in B between the lowest Landau levels, whereas they follow \sqrt{B} for the higher transitions. This highly unusual behavior represents a change from a parabolic to a linear energy dispersion. The density of states derived from our data generally agrees with the existing lowest order tight binding calculation for bilayer graphene. However in comparing data to theory, a single set of fitting parameters fails to describe the experimental results.

The Nature of Quantum Hall States near the Charge Neutral Dirac Point in Graphene

We investigate the quantum Hall (QH) states near the charge neutral Dirac point of a high mobility graphene sample in high magnetic fields. We find that the QH states at filling factors $ν=\pm1$ depend only on the perpendicular component of the field with respect to the graphene plane, indicating them to be not spin-related. A non-linear magnetic field dependence of the activation energy gap at filling factor $ν=1$ suggests a many-body origin. We therefore propose that the $ν=0$ and $\pm1$ states arise from the lifting of the spin and sub-lattice degeneracy of the $n=0$ LL, respectively.

Thermopower Oscillation Symmetries in a Double-Loop Andreev Interferrometer

Andreev interferometers, normal metal wires coupled to superconducting loops, display phase coherent changes as the magnetic flux through the superconducting loops is altered. Properties such as the electronic and thermal conductance of these devices have been shown to oscillate symmetrically about zero with a period equal to one superconducting flux quantum, $Φ_o = h/2e$. However, the thermopower of these devices can oscillate symmetrically or antisymmetrically depending on the geometry of the sample, a phenomenon not well understood theoretically. Here we report on thermopower measurements of a double-loop Andreev interferometer where two Josephson currents in the normal metal wire may be controlled independently. The amplitude and symmetries of the observed thermopower oscillations may help to illuminate the unexplained dependence of oscillation symmetry on sample geometry.

Impact of spin-orbit coupling on quantum Hall nematic phases

Anisotropic charge transport is observed in a two-dimensional (2D) hole system in a perpendicular magnetic field at filling factors nu=7/2, nu=11/2, and nu=13/2 at low temperature. In stark contrast, the transport at nu=9/2 is isotropic for all temperatures. Isotropic hole transport at nu=7/2 is restored for sufficiently low 2D densities or an asymmetric confining potential. The density and symmetry dependences of the observed anisotropies suggest that strong spin-orbit coupling in the hole system contributes to the unusual transport behavior.

Infrared spectroscopy of Landau levels in graphene

We report infrared studies of the Landau level (LL) transitions in single layer graphene. Our specimens are density tunable and show \textit{in situ} half-integer quantum Hall plateaus. Infrared transmission is measured in magnetic fields up to B=18 T at selected LL fillings. Resonances between hole LLs and electron LLs, as well as resonances between hole and electron LLs are resolved. Their transition energies are proportional to $\sqrt{B}$ and the deduced band velocity is $\tilde{c}\approx1.1\times10^6$ m/s. The lack of precise scaling between different LL transitions indicates considerable contributions of many-particle effects to the infrared transition energies.

Room-Temperature Quantum Hall Effect in Graphene

The quantum Hall effect (QHE), one example of a quantum phenomenon that occur on a truly macroscopic scale, has been attracting intense interest since its discovery in 1980 and has helped elucidate many important aspects of quantum physics. It has also led to the establishment of a new metrological standard, the resistance quantum. Disappointingly, however, the QHE could only have been observed at liquid-helium temperatures. Here, we show that in graphene - a single atomic layer of carbon - the QHE can reliably be measured even at room temperature, which is not only surprising and inspirational but also promises QHE resistance standards becoming available to a broader community, outside a few national institutions.

Multifilament YBa2Cu3O6+x -coated conductors with minimized coupling losses

We report an experimental approach to making multifilament coated conductors with low losses in applied time-varying magnetic field. Previously, the multifilament conductors obtained for that purpose by laser ablation suffered from high coupling losses. Here we report how this problem can be solved. When the substrate metal in the grooves segregating the filaments is exposed to oxygen, it forms high resistivity oxides that electrically insulate the stripes from each other and from the substrate. As the result, the coupling loss has become negligible over the entire range of tested parameters (magnetic field amplitudes B and frequencies f) available to us.

Reentrant anisotropic phases in a two-dimensional hole system

Anisotropic charge transport is observed in a two-dimensional (2D) hole system in a perpendicular magnetic field at filling factors nu=7/2 and nu=11/2 for temperatures below 150mK. In stark contrast, the transport at nu=9/2 is isotropic for all temperatures. Our results for a two-dimensional hole system differ substantially from 2D electron transport where no anisotropy has been observed at nu=7/2, the strongest anisotropy occurs at nu=9/2, and reentrant behavior is not evident. We attribute this difference to strong spin-orbit coupling in the hole system.

Landau Level Splitting in Graphene in High Magnetic Fields

The quantum Hall (QH) effect in two-dimensional (2D) electrons and holes in high quality graphene samples is studied in strong magnetic fields up to 45 T. QH plateaus at filling factors $ν=0,\pm 1,\pm 4$ are discovered at magnetic fields $B>$20 T, indicating the lifting of the four-fold degeneracy of the previously observed QH states at $ν=\pm(|n|+1/2)$, where $n$ is the Landau level index. In particular, the presence of the $ν=0, \pm 1$ QH plateaus indicates that the Landau level at the charge neutral Dirac point splits into four sublevels, lifting sublattice and spin degeneracy. The QH effect at $ν=\pm 4$ is investigated in tilted magnetic field and can be attributed to lifting of the spin-degeneracy of the $n=1$ Landau level.

A "super" star cluster grown old: the most massive star cluster in the Local Group

We independently redetermine the reddening and age of the globular cluster 037-B327 in M31 by comparing independently obtained multicolour photometry with theoretical stellar population synthesis models. 037-B327 has long been known to have a very large reddening value, which we confirm to be E(B-V)=1.360+-0.013, in good agreement with the previous results. We redetermine its most likely age at 12.4+- 3.2 Gyr. 037-B327 is a prime example of an unusually bright early counterpart to the ubiquitous ``super'' star clusters presently observed in most high-intensity star-forming regions in the local Universe. In order to have survived for a Hubble time, we conclude that its stellar IMF cannot have been top-heavy. Using this constraint, and a variety of SSP models, we determine a photometric mass of M_{GC}=(3.0+-0.5)*10^7, somewhat depending on the SSP models used, the metallicity and age adopted and the IMF representation. This mass, and its relatively small uncertainties, make this object the most massive star cluster of any age in the Local Group. Assuming that the photometric mass estimate thus derived is fairly close to its dynamical mass, we predict that this GC has a (one-dimensional) velocity dispersion of order (72+-13)km/s. As a surviving "super" star cluster, this object is of prime importance for theories aimed at describing massive star cluster evolution.

Optical Monitoring of PKS 1510-089: A Binary Black Hole System?

Three deep flux minima were observed with nearly the same time-scales and intervals for the blazar PKS 1510-089 in the past few years. A binary black hole system was proposed to be at the nucleus of this object, and a new minimum was predicted to occur in 2002 March. We monitored this source with a 60/90 cm Schmidt telescope from 2002 February to April. In combination with the data obtained by Xie et al. (2004) in the same period, we presented for the 2002 minimum a nearly symmetric light curve, which would be required by an eclipsing model of a binary black hole system. We also constrained the time-scale of the minimum to be 35 min, which is more consistent with the time-scales ~42 min of the three previous minima than the 89 min time-scale given by the same authors. The wiggling miniarcsecond radio jet observed in this object is taken as a further evidence for the binary black hole system. The `coupling' of the periodicity in light curve and the helicity in radio jet is discussed in the framework of a binary black hole system.
